Its baaack!

On the heels of the

hugely successful inaugu-
ral event in 2013, The
Monster Quest 10 Bass
Fishing Tournament is of-
ficially returning to St.
Clair Shores on Sunday,
June 29, at the 9 Mile Road
boat ramp.
Were really excited to
have it back, parks and
recreation director Greg
Esler said. We expect
over 100 boats this year.
Registration is going very
well already.
Esler added that an-
glers from all over the
country come in for the
event, which features a
top prize of $10,000.
It should be a great
tournament, Easler said.
Not only for the fishing,
but also for the city and
the community. Most of
these guys want to travel
light which means theyll
be stopping for gas in
town, patronizing the res-
taurants, heading to the
bait shop in town. Weve
already had reports that
guys who have already
registered for the tourna-
ment are already scouting
the area. Its going to be
hectic, and crazy, but its
going to be a really good
time.
Last years event, the
first of its kind in the city,
was a resounding success.
The tournament attract-
ed nearly 100 boats and
the celebration and
weigh-in following the
tournament attracted

City Council approved the proposed budget
presented for the 2014/15 fiscal year at its June
2 meeting, dipping into the citys rainy day fund
for about $1.1 million in order to comply with
state law that mandates budgets be balanced.
The approval comes on the heels of months of
discussions, workshops and tweaking from
council and administration, that ultimately
trimmed in excess of $850,000 from expendi-
tures off the originally proposed budget.
The cost-cutting measures, which include de-
lays in capital expenditures such as vehicle pur-
chases and other projects, help to soften the blow
of the shortfall.
The citys expenditures are an estimated $46.1
million, while its estimated revenues are about
$44.9 million, according to the approved budget.
We have a deficit, Councilman John Caron
said. Weve had that for the last several years be-
cause of the drop in property values resulted in a
drop in property taxes. The amount we had this
year is significantly lower than what we have
tracked in the past, though.
Caron said the council also is confident this
$1.1 million dollars is an amount the city can
make up over the course of the fiscal year,
through adjustments and fiscal diligence.
Were fairly sure we can make this up, he
said. We just have to really watch expenditures
through the rest of the year.
The city practices a policy that helps ease the
burden between estimations, which is what the
budget is built around, and reality, Caron said.

Its a community gath-

said. Its a time to cele-
brate the upcoming boat-
ing season, and to get an
extra blessing for our
boats and the people. Its
for a safe and happy
summer. Which always
helps.
But theres more to the
ceremony than that, she
said.
A huge part of this is
the remembrance,
Stano said. We do it ev-
ery year. We toll the bell
for every single one of
our members who is not
with us anymore. It is a
huge and important part
of our ceremony. We
want to remember those
who arent here.

Caron said. So that
when the real figures
come in, we fall below
the budgeted numbers.
The real question for
residents, however, is
whether city services
will be affected.
The answer is a simple
one, Caron said.
No, he said, bluntly.
From a services stand-
point, nothing is going
to be affected. Residents
shouldnt notice any dif-
ferences at all.
In recent years, bud-
gets have been a chal-
lenge for cities all over
the state, St. Clair
Shores included.
Decreases in revenue,
coupled with rising
costs to municipalities,
and state laws that re-
strict increases in prop-
erty tax revenue, pres-
ent the council with un-
precedented challenges.
Grants and creative
ideas financing are vital
in todays economic cli-
mate, Caron said.
What weve been try-
ing to do with grants is
use them to fund those
one-time purchases,
Caron said. Where oth-
er communities might
be using these grants to
fund personnel, which is
a scenario we do not
want to be in because
once the grant runs out
you have to cut back on
the personnel.
Grant funding has
been used within the
city for a wide variety of
projects and capital ex-
penses recently, ranging
from sewer projects to
vehicles.
Compared to many
surrounding communi-
ties, the city is staying
afloat in very challeng-
ing fiscal times, even
with a slight increase in
property values within
the city.
Theres always going
to be challenges on the
expenditure side, he
said. But were doing
everything we can to
take on these challeng-
es, be fiscally responsi-
ble, and still provide the
same level of services to
residents.

The biggest party in
town was in downtown
St. Clair Shores last
weekend.
The annual June Fest
celebration, presented
by the 9 Mack
Merchants Association,
featured everything
from a Made in
Michigan Food Court to
face painting and a pet-
ting zoo, just to name a
few of the many family-
oriented attractions at
the festival.
This is, we think, the
20th year, CirCare own-
er, and one of the events
organi zers, Gl ori a
Kinne, said. Today is
just a gorgeous day. The
turnout is wonderful.
Every year when we
start planning this we
reiterate what this is all
about. Its two-pronged,
really. Yes, its to get
people down here walk-
ing, so they can see ev-
erything we have to of-
fer down here. Secondly,
is just to give back to the
community that has sup-
ported us through the
years.
Part of the giving back
is hosting an event that
is perfect for families,
and its mission accom-
plished, said St. Clair
Shores resident Cherry
Middleton.
Im here with my kids
and theyre having such
a good time, Middleton
said. At the same time,
Im enjoying some of the
vendors and shops, too.
Its a good formula they
have. I am really enjoy-
ing it.
Hundreds of patrons
came out on what Kinne
described as a perfect
day.
Its all about the com-
munity, Kinne said.
Were all part of it. We
want to share that sense
of community here.
Thats important.
A particularly popular
attraction was the Made
In Michigan Food Court,
a designated area of the
festival featuring home-
spun Michigan products
ranging from maple syr-
up to St. Clair Shores
own Little Zs BBQ.
There is so much em-
phasis right now on peo-
ple wanting to support
their local community
businesses, Kinne said.
The Made In Michigan
Food Court is relatively
new to us, and were re-
ally happy with how its
grown and how success-
ful its been. Mark
OBrien (President, Roy
O' Brien Ford) really
took the lead on that. We
would like to see it grow
even more as the years
go along.

Theyre two very spe-

The simple act of cook-
ing can build a bridge,
form a bond and create a
friendship.
For a handful of cogni-
tively impaired students
from Lake Shore Public
Schools Kennedy Middle
School and a handful of
Cul i na r y Ar t s
Department students
from South Lake High
School, making a pizza
helped to nurture a con-
nection.
The Feast with
Friends, event at South
Lake High School brought
together these students,
and, over the course of
three hours, each KMS
student partnered with a
South Lake Culinary Arts
student and created a piz-
za from scratch, made a
salad, cooked these pizzas
in the departments com-
mercial kitchen, and en-
joyed lunch together at the
schools Lake Front Bistro.
The event is the first at
both schools, but the idea
sparked the interest of
Paraprofessional Marsha
Salome, who quickly
started the ball rolling.
I saw a video online
and I immediately
thought that we could do
something like that here,
Salome said. I sent the
video to Chef (Daryl
Shepherd), to Ms.
Kennedy, the South Lake
principal, and it went
from there. Everybody
thought it was great.
The program is win-win
for both schools, Salome
said.
Its a positive for every-
one involved, she said.
The students from KMS
get the ability to learn
necessary life skills like
cooking in a kitchen, set-
ting up the tables, and
some of the appropriate
behaviors within a work
setting. The Culinary Arts
students get the benefit of
assisting kids with special
needs, and learn about
how to meet the needs of
people and customers
who might have some
special needs of some
sort. Its a good thing all
the way around.
South Lake Culinary
Arts Department chef
Daryl Shepherd couldnt
agree more.
This is the capstone of
a successful year for us,
Shepherd said. Its been
awesome, and doing this
is just an incredible expe-
rience for the students.
Theyre going to remem-
ber this for a long time.
Its that special and that
meaningful.
Salome hopes the event
will continue beyond last
weeks Feast with
Friends, and she believes
it will.
I think this event is go-
ing to be a springboard
for next year, she said.
Theres plans to do this
three or four times next
year. The details arent
worked out yet, but I be-
lieve this is going to be a
regular event.

The day kicks off about
8:30 a.m. at the Detroit
Leadership Academy at
13550 Virgil Street in
Detroit, with a bus to the
urban farming site leav-
ing at 8:50 a.m.
After arriving at the ur-

Botulinum toxin A or BO-
TOX was introduced over
forty years ago for treatment of
patients sufering from crossed
eyes. It began to be used for
cosmetic purposes when it was
discovered that it also could
be used to relax facial muscles
that caused wrinkles around
the eyes and on the forehead.
In 2002, ofcial FDA ap-
proval of Botulinum toxin A
was issued for cosmetic treat-
ment of facial lines. Since
then, BOTOX injections have
become the most sought-afer
cosmetic treatment in clinics
nationwide.
Treatment is done by inject-
ing very small quantities of
the toxin into the appropriate
facial muscles.
Afer a muscle is injected, the
efects are not usually seen for
3 to 5 days. Te efects are tem-
porary, usually lasting three to
four months before re-treat-
ment is required.
Patients desiring treatments
should seek a well-trained
physician who has experience
in this treatment, as well as
being knowledgeable of other
cosmetic treatments to ensure
they are properly screened as
good candidates for the treat-
ment vs. another procedure
that may be more suitable.
Also, certain patients should
not receive treatment, such as
pregnant women or patients
who have had adverse afects
with prior treatment.
To learn more about treat-
ment of facial wrinkles with
Botox, contact your dermatol-
ogist, or contact us at Eastside

T
he Flag of
the United
States of
America is
defined by
the government as a
symbol of freedom and
liberty to which
Americans pledge their
allegiance.
Flag Day is celebrated
June 14 a presiden-
tially proclaimed obser-
vance since 1916.
Although Flag Day is
not a federal holiday,
Americans are encour-
aged by the government
to display the flag out-
side their houses and
businesses on this day to
honor the history and
heritage the American
flag represents.
The flag has lovingly
been named The Star-
Spangled Banner, Old
Glory, The Red, White
and Blue, and The
Stars and the Stripes.
It consists of 13 alter-
nating red and white
stripes and 50 white
stars on a blue field,
with each star repre-
senting a state. Its red,
white and blue colors
represent valor and
bravery; purity, inno-
cence and vigilance; and
perseverance and jus-
tice, respectively.
For civilians, the U.S.
Flag Code defines the
following rules and cus-
toms of how to properly
wear and display the
American flag.
According to the code:
The flag is to be dis-
played in the open on
buildings and stationary
flagstaffs.
Unless illuminated
for a patriotic effect, the
flag is displayed from
sunrise to sunset.
The flag should be
hoisted briskly and low-
ered ceremoniously.
When flown at half-
staff, the flag should be
first hoisted to the peak
for an instant and then
lowered to the half-staff
position. The flag should
be again raised to the
peak before it is lowered
for the day.
The flag should not
be displayed on days
when the weather is in-
clement, except when
an all-weather flag,
made of Nylon or anoth-
er non-absorbent mate-
rial, is displayed.
The flag should nev-
er touch anything be-
neath it, such as the
ground, floor, water or
merchandise.
The flag should nev-
er be festooned, drawn
back or up or in folds,
but always allowed to
fall free.
The flag should nev-
er be used as wearing
apparel, bedding or
drapery.
No part of the flag
should ever be used as a
costume or athletic uni-
form.
The flag should nev-
er be used as a recepta-
cle for receiving, hold-
ing, carrying or deliver-
ing anything.
The flag should nev-
er be carried flat or hori-
zontally, but always aloft
and free.
The flag should not
be draped over the hood,
top, sides or back of a
vehicle or of a railroad
train or boat.
When a flag is in a
condition no longer fit-
ting for display, is
should be destroyed in a
dignified way prefer-
ably by a ceremonious
burning.

Greg Esler is a basket-
ball coaching legend in
the state of Michigan.
The resume is long,
filled with division, league
and district titles.
The former Lake Shore
High School coach even
has a state championship
on the long list of accom-
plishments.
Few would argue that
Esler doesnt know the
game of basketball and
how to coach it.
Beginning June 23, and
running through June 27,

can learn from this
Basketball Coaches
Association of Michigan
Hall of Fame member at
the Greg Esler 2014 All
Star Basketball Camp, lo-
cated at Macomb

Warren.
Camp participants will
learn the fundamentals,
take part in drills and play
team games.
Motivational and high-
light films will be shown,
and individual awards
will be handed out
throughout the week-long
camp.
It doesnt matter how
good you are physically,
or how gifted you are ath-
letically, Esler said. You
still have to know how to
dribble, how to catch the
ball in the right position,
learn how to play defense.
All the little things, too. If
you can learn how to do
these little things, theres
a high advantage there.

Lakeview pitcher Rebecca Corbett was stellar all season long for the Huskies, and helped to propel the team to

final
The 2014 softball cam-
paign came to a close
last weekend for each of
the citys three softball
teams.
The Lakeview Huskies
girls softball team fell to
Garden City, 11-2, in the
regional finals at Grosse
Pointe North.
The squad earned its
spot in the finals thanks
to a 13-2 trouncing over
Detroit Cass Tech in the
regional semifinals ear-
lier in the day.
The Shorians also
earned a trip to the re-
gional round last week-
end, but the squad from
Lake Shore traveled to
Anchor Bay to compete
for a ticket to the state
quarterfinals.
Despite the effort,
however, the Shorians
were on the wrong end
of an 11-10, 8-inning
score.
South Lake rounded
out the local team com-
peting last weekend for
a regional crown, but
their hopes were dashed
with a resounding defeat
in the regional opener,
23-0 to host Livonia
Ladywood.

The 2015 Chrysler 200 is available this month in ar-
ea showrooms. According to Chrysler, the 2015
Chrysler 200 launched out of the gate with more than
10,000 first-day vehicle orders.
The Chrysler brand is thrilled to see the level of en-
thusiasm customers and dealers have shown to order
the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200, said Al Gardner,
President and CEO Chrysler Brand, Chrysler
Group LLC. With a standard nine-speed automatic
transmission, a choice of two powertrains with fuel
economy ratings of up to 36 miles per gallon highway,
an available state-of-the-art all-wheel drive system,
and an interior that will wow drivers and passengers
alike, the new Chrysler 200 is raising the bar for what
customers should expect from a mid-size sedan.
With a starting manufacturers suggested retail price
of $21,700, excluding destination charge, the 2015
Chrysler 200 is available in four different models: the
2015 Chrysler 200 LX, Chrysler Limited, Chrysler
200S and the premium Chrysler 200C.
With a segment-first standard nine-speed automat-
ic transmission, electronic shifting with a rotary e-dial, an available all-wheel
drive system that reduces parasitic losses with a disconnection rear axle, excep-
tional ride and handling characteristics and innovative safety and security fea-
tures, the new 200 offers an enjoyable ride.
Two world-class engines are available: the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine,
which produces a best-in-class 295 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque;
and the standard 2.4-liter MultiAir2 Tigershark I-4 engine, which produces 184
horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque and achieves a highway fuel economy
rating of 36 mpg.
The Chrysler 200 features an interior loaded with standard and optional fea-
tures including a center console with sliding cupholders, multiple power outlets
and a pass-through storage space.
The Chrysler 200 leapfrogs expectations for a mid-size car with an elegant ex-
terior design, the most available safety and security features in the segment, with
60; an available, best-in-class all-wheel drive system; and easy-to-use, state-of-
the-art technology.
The automaker said the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant
is at full production through mid-July and orders continue
to roll in. The 2015 Chrysler 200 is designed, engineered
and built in Michigan.

The all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 delivers exception-
al power. Its 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II four-cylin-
der engine provides up to 36 highway miles per
gallon, while the available 3.6L Pentastar V6 en-
gine delivers up to 31 highway mpg with 295
horsepower. The center console design blends ap-
pearance, storage, functionality, ergonomics and
connectivity.

Ford expands
availability of rear

The 2014 Ford Fusion becomes the only vehicle in its
class to offer rear inflatable safety belts, which combine
the attributes of safety belts and air bags.
The inflatable belt is designed to help reduce head,
neck and chest injuries for rear-seat passengers, often
children and older passengers who can be more vulner-
able to such injuries, said Srinivasan Sundararajan,
safety technical leader with Fords research and ad-
vanced engineering group. This is another unique
family technology that builds on our safety leadership.
The shoulder belt developed for the outboard rear
seats contains an airbag. During a crash, sensors deter-
mine when the inflatable belt should deploy and signal
the belts tubular airbag to rapidly inflate with com-
pressed gas.
In everyday use, inflatable belts operate like conven-
tional safety belts, and are compatible with child car
seats and boosters. During a crash, the inflatable belt
helps distribute crash forces across more of a passen-
gers torso than a traditional belt up to five times
more. Spreading the pressure over a larger area helps
reduce pressure on the passengers chest, and helps
control head and neck motion.
Ford introduced the rear safety belts on the 2011 Ford
Explorer. Along with Fusion, the belt is now available on
Ford Flex and Taurus, and Lincoln MKT and MKZ.

2014 Acura
RLX
Acuras 2014 RLX offers all
around luxury along with a
spacious interior and ad-
vanced technology.
Its powered by an all-new
3.5-liter, 310 horsepower
V-6 engine that features
Direct Gas Injection,
Variable Cylinder
Management and the
Acura i-VTEC system.
The manufacturers sug-
gested retail price for the
RLX starts at $48,450.
Stop/start technology
will be standard on the
2015 Impala base 2.5-liter
Ecotec engine, an addi-
tion that improves the ve-
hicles city fuel economy
by nearly 5 percent, or
one mile per gallon.
The Impala comes stan-
dard with a four-cylinder
engine. It offers custom-
ers higher mpg city rat-
ings and a more afford-
able entry price into the
segment than six-cylinder
competitors.
Stop/start shuts down
the engine in certain driv-
ing conditions to reduce
fuel consumption. The
technology is becoming
more prevalent world-
wide.
The 2.5L Impala with
stop/start yields an EPA-
estimated fuel economy of
22 mpg city, 31 for the
highway and 25 com-
bined. The Impala with
the 3.6L V-6 engine will
not include stop/start
technology.
The Impala will become
the second vehicle in
Chevrolets U.S. lineup to
feature stop/start technol-
ogy, following the seg-
ment-first standard inclu-
sion in the 2014 Malibu in-
troduced late last year.
The technology helps im-
prove the Malibus city fu-
el economy by 14 percent.
Chevrolet engineers de-
veloped the stop/start in
the Impala from extensive
experience with GMs
eAssist system and the ac-
companying algorithms
that allow engines to en-
gage and disengage sub-
tly.
Stop/start system cus-
tomer research indicates
they want the engine to
start up as quickly and
smoothly as possible after
a stop, said Mark
Meyers, Chevrolet Global
Vehicle Performance
manager.
During the develop-
ment of this technology, a
team of software engi-
neers was created. The
Center for Excellence fo-
cuses on advancing stop/
start technology and mak-
ing its operation seamless
to the customer.
A big challenge for the
team was overcoming
change-of-mind events,
instances in which the
driver begins to stop, but
then quickly accelerates.
The algorithms adapt the
system so the starter can
fire even if the engine did
not fully shut off.
The smart software also
prevents the system from
engaging if the car does
not reach 6 mph since its
last start, a welcome fea-
ture in stop-and-go-driv-
ing conditions. The sys-
tem also considers cabin
temperature, humidity,
battery charge and other
factors when deciding if
the engine should come to
a stop.
Hardware revisions al-
so have been made. The
noise and vibration team
worked with drivetrain
engineers to revise motor
mounts to provide the
greatest isolation possible
from the cabin. The team
also included a larger
heavy-duty starter motor
to assist with the addition-
al ignition cycles.
The 2015 Impala goes
on sale this summer with
a suggested starting price
of $27,735 for the 4-cylin-
der LS model, and
$30,960 for the 6-cylinder
LT model. These include
an $825 destination
charge, but exclude tax, ti-
tle, license and dealer
fees.
