Instructions for building the fence

1. The first step is to snap a chalk line to locate the new
intermediate rail.

First, shake the Chalk Snap Line to get a good amount of
chalk on the string. The new 2x4 Intermediate rail is 1-8
above the existing bottom rail. Have one person hold the
end of the line at one end of the fence at the 1-8 point. A
second person will then feed the chalk line behind the
existing fence posts for about three or four posts, and then
place their end of the chalk string at 1-8 above the
existing bottom rail. Hold the string really tight. Now, a
third person will then pull the string back and let it snap
into place. It will make a chalk line on the fence.

2. Now you can begin cutting the 2x4s that will brace the
top of the fence once we cut it shorter.

Unfortunately, the spacing on the existing fence posts is not
uniform. You will need to measure the length of each board
separately. Cut the 2x4 to length and insert it into the space
between the existing fence post and the existing fence
boards.

3. In order to nail the new intermediate rails to the existing
fence posts, you will need to take the existing fence boards
off at each post. Dont just hammer on the backside of the
fence board. This will cause it to split. Find a short piece of
2x4, place it on the fence board, and hammer on the 2x4.

4. With one person holding up the board on the inside of
the fence, a second person will nail the board into place
from the sidewalk side.

5. Next, snap a chalk line on the sidewalk side of the fence to cut
the top of the fence off. The top of the new fence will be 36 above
the bottom of the fence boards.
Dont measure from the ground.
The ground varies too much to be reliable. Pull the snap line as far
as it will allow and snap the line.

6. Use the circular saw to cut the fence off along the chalk line.
Start at one of the posts where you removed boards. It is helpful to
have a second person manage the power cord as the first person
cuts.

7. Now it is time to install the wire fence. This is a 50-foot long
roll and will be a pain to handle. Roll the fence out on the
sidewalk with the curve toward the ground. Carefully work as
much of the curve out as possible. Try not to create any sharp
bends in the wire.

With several people holding the wire fencing, work the fence
down between the existing wood fence boards and the new
intermediate rail. Line the top of the wire fencing with the top
of the posts.

Using the U-nails, tack the fence into place at the ends and
several locations in the middle. The last roll will need to be cut.
Use the bolt cutters or a hacksaw to make the cuts.

Once all of the fence is tacked in place, go back and place U-
nails every two feet. The only place that the fencing will
actually be anchored is at the existing top rail. However, once
the existing fence boards are screwed to the new intermediate
rail, it will also hold the wire fence in place.

5. Use the drill and the deck screws to screw the fence boards to the
new intermediate rail.

Congratulations, you are done.
