COST 231 Walfisch-Ikegami Model: Urban Demo Projects 1
1 Contents of the Package

This package contains two demo projects for the COST 231 Walfisch-Ikegami Model, which is part
of the WinProp Software Suite Version 6. The COST 231 Walfisch-Ikegami Model is a simple
empirical model with very short computation times for the prediction of the fieldstrength in very
large urban scenarios.

The urban scenarios available in this package are the following:

Munich (Germany): This scenario is part of the large city Munich in Germany. Three
different transmitters are placed in the city centre.
Nuremberg (Germany): Also three transmitters are placed in the city centre of
Nuremberg, which is a city in the German state of Bavaria.

The following files are needed for the computations:

Project Files: The demo projects are called *.net / *.nup. Both files are needed for
the definition of a complete urban project in ProMan.
Antenna Patterns: The antenna patterns used in the scenarios are stored in *.apb
files. They can be visualized with WinProps AMan tool.
Scenario Database: The database contains all information about the environment.
Vector information about the buildings as well as topographical information is stored in
this *.ocb file.

The next sections give short introductions to both scenarios.

2 Scenario Munich (Germany)

The first scenario included in this demo package is the downtown area of Munich. Three
transmitters are placed on the map. One transmitter is an isotropic radiator and the other
transmitters are directional antennas. Directional antennas are indicated by a small blue arrow
which points in the direction of main radiation.

The buildings are defined by vector data. Each building is modeled as a cylinder with polygonal
ground plate and uniform height. Topography is also available in this scenario, even through there
are no hills in the city center.

The pictures below give an impression of the scenario. On the left side, the map view with the
three transmitter locations is given. On the right side, a real image of the same environment is
depicted.

3 Scenario Nuremberg (Germany)

The second scenario of this demo package is the downtown area of Nuremberg. Three
transmitters are placed on the map.

Topography is not available in this scenario, as the terrain is flat
in Nuremberg.

The pictures below give an impression of the scenario. On the left side, the map view with the
three transmitter locations is given. On the right side, a real image of the same environment is
depicted.

4 Run a Prediction

The prediction has to be computed for all transmitters in each scenario. The task to run a
prediction is very simple. J ust open the corresponding project (File->Open Project) in ProMan and
press the RUN PRO (Run Propagation) button (see picture below).

When the prediction is completed, the results are stored in the sub folder Results.

5 View a Result

The result browser on the left side of ProMan can be used to visualize the computed results.
Simply select the site and the antenna of interest and click on Power (see picture below) to
display the corresponding result.

Power results are stored in *.fpp files. You can also open the results directly from the harddisk,
without using the result browser. Select File->Open Result and open a result from the Results
folder.
