The stage has been set at the Civic Centre for 7

p.m. on June 19.
Contestants from non-profit agencies in Strathmore are stirring creative juices, smoothing out
kinks in their ideas and shaking off backstage
worries with an eye on the prize of $10,000 offered in the Town of Strathmores Lets make a
Pitch contest.
The award will go to the development of the
winning idea. Town of Strathmores CAO Dwight
Stanford said it is not too late to enter and those
interested should contact Jen Sawatzky at 403934-3133 as soon as possible.
The defining moment for these contestants will
be the short minutes of their presentation in front
of a celebrity panel of judges, a panel comprised
of shopping centre development guru Ron Renaud of Rencor Developments, oil services wizard
Beerd Beekman of Magnum Cement, and business prodigy and entrepreneur Brett Wilson.
To win, contestants have to figure out the art
of the pitch.
The value of marketing is the one of the most
under-rated skills in life, said Wilson. When you
present yourself, whether its socially, for a job
opportunity, for business, or promoting a product mastering your presentation is an asset.
Wilson said that a perfect pitch and a polished
presentation are attainable, even for those who
dont have a natural talent for it.
What are his tips?
Get their attention quickly, said Wilson. You
only have about 15 to 20 seconds to grab their
interest before their attention is lost.
Wilson said practise is essential. He said the
insertion of ums and ahs throughout a presentation wastes valuable time and quickly delivers
a message that you are unprepared and havent
thought your idea through. While he didnt think
there was time in this venue for a polished audiovisual presentation, he said sometimes one image
or visual representation can drive an idea home.
In this contest, the judges will be directing
targeted questions to contestants, so predicting
possible inquiries and again practising clear responses ahead of time would be beneficial.
Wilson has been a supporter of Strathmore
charitable events in the past and he considers
giving back to the community one of the many
ways to improve personal and business investments.

You are 20 years old, tucked deep in a troop ship, shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow soldiers headed for one of five
separate landing sites on the beaches of Normandy, France.
The seas are rocking below you and through the night planes
roar overhead, amidst enemy shelling. Youve trained, been
briefed and given your orders, but fears of what lies in the
dark unknown sits low in your belly. It is your mission to
push through the waters on Juno beach and secure footholds
farther inland. The beaches are mined and booby trapped
and German artillery awaits your landing.
This is not a premise for a video gamethis was the reality
for 14,000 WWII Canadian soldiers on June 6, 1944.
George Freeman, age 90, is one of the few soldiers left
alive, whose foot touched Juno beach that day in Normandy.
Tonight we honour George Freeman, who is the only surviving member in our Legion to serve in D-Day, said Bruce
Westgard, past president of the Strathmore Royal Canadian
Legion #10. This award is presented to George Freeman on
the 70th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944. It is to honour
your unselfish dedication in service on behalf of all Canadians.
President Gary Horne was not able to attend the presentation but personally made his apologies to Freeman on his
arrival to the evening celebration.
In WWII, Freeman served in the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery and he was tasked with the technically challenging job of charting maps for placement of heavy artillery

and establishing their munition trajectories. Bombardment

from both German and allied weapons destroyed many of
the surrounding towns and villages; it was a cost of war.
Freeman said he had revisited France several times for official celebrations and he was glad to see areas rebuilt. Restoration is valued by Freeman, whose career once back in
Canada was working with Ducks Unlimited, restoring native
wildfowl habitat.
Freeman has appeared in many local Remembrance Day
ceremonies over the years, laid wreaths and delivered the
message of the cost of war and the rewards of peace to
younger generations. Although there were many lives lost,
Freeman said the soldiers sacrifice did make a difference.
The D-Day assault is said to have been instrumental in ending the war.
His wife Helena, son Larry and Larrys wife Debbie were
present for the presentation.
Larry said he shared a special visit to France with his father in 1964, one of several that the two have made overseas
together. He said it was before the development of the Juno
Beach Centre and other museums. They walked the path
of Freemans wartime journey. They found the evidence of
where he dug into the beach on D-Day and other remnants
and reminders leading into the interior of French communities. Larry said that his father still remembered the minute
details of the paths taken.
Larry said the French always welcomed the veterans and
they passed the knowledge of wartime struggles for freedom, down to their children. All the graves of fallen soldiers
were still tended meticulously.
Larry said he is proud of his fathers contribution to peace
and the award he received from his hometown Legion, 70
years after D-Day. When asked if he would consider spreading the stories Freeman had taught him of peace and freedom to younger generations, when a time came that his father couldnt, he replied,
Absolutely.

There is little doubt that creating a sense of community
is key to having people come to town and having them stay
there, said Wilson. Seeing strong community interest and
creating good infrastructure is definitely a driver of economic interest.
Donations of $100 or more can be given towards the town
beautification projects by any corporation, business or individual; the Lets Make a Pitch event will also generate a
marketing opportunity, as contributors names will be posted
at the event and inserted on the program. These donations
make good sense, too, as tax deductible receipts will be issued by the Town of Strathmore. So everyone is encouraged
to come out for a fun night of networking. Food bank donations will also be accepted at the door.

Sit down, stay awhile

SHANNON LECLAIR

One of the first steps to the downtown revitalization plan
will be coming soon. At the June 4 council meeting Deputy
Chief Administrative Officer Linda Nelson spoke to council
about the portable patios that will be placed downtown.
Councillor Rocky Blokland asked to be excused from the
discussion to avoid any possible conflict of interest.
What these are, are portable patios that we are going to
place adjacent to sidewalks on parking stalls, said Nelson.
Administration has determined two locations they are
hoping to place the new patios, and were seeking councils
blessing on June 4.
The first location will be next to the Calgary Co-op. The
tables are about 20 feet long and eight feet wide; there will
be railings around them for safety and possibly flags to see
them from the street.
The location is immediately adjacent to the Co-op parking
lot, there are three parking stalls, and administration would
like to see it placed in the centre stall and possibly block off
the stalls of either side.
The second location being looked at is a parking stall in
front of Rockys Bakery, and the one adjacent to it, in front
of Lil Hoots and Aurora Capital.
The reason were planning that location is were planning
to put in a cafeteria type of table, so we want somewhere

where people can go and get a beverage or something to eat

and bring it outside, said Nelson.
Further down the street the only other possible location
would be in front of More Than Ice Cream, but Nelson said
they already have Heritage Park there with tables, and so
administration thought this would be a better location.
Councillor John Rempel said he thinks both locations are
very desirable for the patios because they are in locations
that people will really have the opportunity to enjoy them
for the above stated reasons.
The portable patios could be moved around once a month,
they were designed to be relocated often, but administration
thinks that for this year they may leave them in the same
location so people can get used to the idea and next year,
Nelson said, they would likely want to build a few more.
There are many different things that can be done with
the patios each year - furniture can be changed or the town
could have a busker come in and entertain people downtown.
If a business does not want the patio in front of their
location, Nelson said that administration would then look
at different locations, no one would have to have the patio.
Love the idea ... its something different for our downtown area, said Councillor Pat Fule.
Council approved the recommendations and the new
patios should be making their appearance in the next few
weeks.

EVEN NUMBERED HOMES - Tuesday, Thursday

and Saturday 5 AM to 10 AM and 5 PM to 10 PM
ODD NUMBERED HOMES - Wednesday, Friday
and Sunday 5 AM to 10 AM and 5PM to 10 PM
Residents are reminded that while these hours will be available for outdoor watering, hand watering of flowerbeds and vegetable gardens is

Town of Strathmores water conservation efforts.
New Sod/Seed Exemptions
A temporary exemption to outdoor watering for the watering of the new

of commercial fertilizers as per Schedule B, is available through the
Town of Strathmore.

First Phase of Downtown

Revitalization Progressing
The Town of Strathmore will be starting with our first initiative for the
Downtown Revitalization within the next few weeks. The initiative will
consist of the placement of two portable islands in strategic locations
along Second Avenue.
Portable Islands such as the one shown above, can be placed in parking
spaces, as an extension to the sidewalk, and can be relocated from time
to time. These conversational pieces encourage people to relax in the
downtown area and to feel a sense of belonging. They can include plants
and flowers for aesthetics, and seating for practicality and enjoyment.

Strathmore rural governance report

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Consultant Ken Kendall spoke to council in chambers on
June 9, about his recommendations for long term operation
plans for Strathmore Rural firefighting response and rescue
areas; however, the session was closed to the public and
held in-camera.
No details of the report were given and a subsequent suppression motion limited the publics chance to view details,
prior to a June 17 council meeting.
We hadnt been given a chance to review it and come up
with recommendations, said CAO Alan Parkin. We wanted
to be able to do that, so we could address questions from

council and the public.

Council moved that Kendall present the full plan and all
documentation pertaining to the plan to administrative staff,
which was tasked with assessing the report, developing recommendations, and presenting their recommendations. They
were also charged to develop an action plan with necessary
policy and procedures and bylaw amendments. Everything
will be presented in council on June 17. Copies will be available for distribution to the public on June 17, and placed on
the county website after the meeting. Updates will be posted
at www.wheatlandcounty.ca
A Town Hall meeting will be held at 8 p.m. that evening at
the Carseland Community Hall to inform the residents of the
contents of the report.

Weve all heard the phrase five-second rule when

food drops on the floor. This is indeed a myth and
many studies have proven its fallacy. We often forget
that our shoes track in many bacteria many of which
are fecal in origin. Heres a better rule: Drop it? Toss
it.
Good sleep hygiene includes sleeping in a cooler
room. It seems that keeping your night-time
bedroom temperature between 15.5 and 190C (60660F) is ideal. It helps cool down your bodys core
temperature which helps you to sleep better. If you
always seem to be warm, try a cool shower before
bed.
One type of exercise that has become popular
in recent years is interval training. This combines
short bursts of intense activity (intervals) with lower
intensity periods of activity. The activity can be
swimming, running or even walking. If you use
walking as your exercise of choice, warm up first
then walk really briskly for 30 seconds then slow
down and let your heart rate normalize then repeat.
Check with your doctor first if you plan any new
exercise activity.
This is allergy season and the pollen drifting through
the air can make life uncomfortable for many.
Flushing the nasal passages with a saline solution
will help clear pollen so it wont bother you. You can

The Heritage Days parade will go on thanks to
the help of the town. On June 4 at the regular town

on behalf of the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce. The letter had been drafted by
acting president Joyce Bazant (who has since resigned from the role), stating that at the May 26
meeting, the board made the decision to request
that Town of Strathmore takes over the organization of the 2014 parade.
Over the past several years the Chamber of
Commerce has struggled to organize the parade
and due to the lack of personnel the chamber is
unable to complete this task this year, said Breitwieser reading from the letter.
The letter further stated that the board of directors is hoping the town will take it over; the board

Nancy Stairs (403) 934-1625

Steve Farran (403) 901-9335

thanked the town and said they will do what they

can to assist.
Councillor Rocky Blokland was at the board
meeting and said the chamber had some concerns
about whether or not they would be able to take
the organization and planning back over in the
future once membership and volunteers are up.
Councillor Bob Sobol said he is hoping this continues to be a cooperative effort between the town
and chamber. There were also questions raised
about the chamber continuing with the judging of
the floats this year.
Breitwieser said the indication he got was that
there wouldnt be, but that is something that will
be determined by the town.
We will take direction from the administration
and the town as to how we can participate. We
will participate and we definitely are going to
have a float, said Breitwieser.

Standing up for Canadian taxpayers

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P.,
CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

As your Member of Parliament, and
as the Minister of State (Finance), I find
myself again reporting to you the good
news about Canadas economy and
our Conservative governments efforts
to stand up for Canadian taxpayers. I
work with these facts and figures on a
daily basis in Ottawa and I feel strongly
that it is important to keep Canadians my constituents in particular - apprised
of our progress and achievements.
Our government is on-track and
working hard to eliminate the annual
federal budgetary deficit in 2015 while
at the same time implementing policies
to keep taxes low for Canadian workers and their families. We are expanding trade opportunities; working to get
our goods to international markets;
helping Canadians find jobs; providing
incentives for investment; helping businesses grow; and more.
It is important for Canadians to understand how Canadas economic prosperity is achieved. Historically, we are
an exporting nation with a large geo-

graphic territory that is rich in natural

resources and yet we have a relatively
small population. I always encourage
my constituents to take the time to
watch the televised House of Commons
Debates and Committee Hearings. As
your MP, I can report that this is where
you see first-hand the concerns of taxpayers that are raised in developing
sustainable and affordable economic
and social policy.
Just last week, the Parliamentary
Budget Officer reported that Canadian
taxpayers are paying Ottawa about $30
billion less this year. Thats about a
$1,000 per person due to tax changes
introduced in the past decade. Over
$17 billion is tax savings from personal
income taxes which our Conservative
government has been steadily reducing.
We try to ensure that everyone knows
about the tax breaks, credits and exemptions we provide that include: the
Childrens Fitness and Arts Tax Credit;
the Family Caregiver Tax Credit; the
Child Disability and Registered Disability Savings Program; Seniors Pension
Income Splitting; Doubling the Pension
Income Amount; First-Time Home Buy-

ers Tax Credit; Public Transit Tax Credit; Textbook Tax Credit and Scholarship
and Bursary Exemptions; Tool Deductions; the Tax-Free Savings Account;
and many more. I mail the details of all
of these tax breaks to everyone in our
Crowfoot riding every spring to help
you fill out your tax forms.
The Parliamentary Budget Officer
calculates that our Conservative governments two-percentage point cut in
the GST has provided over $13 billion
of the tax saving this year out of the
overall $30 billion total tax savings.
The Parliamentary Budget Officers report shows clearly that the low middle
income earners - households with incomes between $12,200 and $23,000
have received the bulk of tax reductions. Prime Minister Stephen Harper
has always said, we want Canadians to
keep more of their hard-earned money
in their own pockets.

Expressions the Dance Gallery is
holding their annual showcase performance at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary on June 21.
This year the dance studio printed
500 tickets, and there are less than 100
available.
We might actually sell out this year
which were really excited about because that hasnt happened before,
said Angela Murdoch, a dance teacher
at the studio.
The show will feature the newly acquired skills of all of the dancers who
range in ages from three-years-old to
20. The show will also let guests see a
variety of all styles and genres of dance

from tap to ballet, to acrobatic and hiphop.

Its a celebration really about the
hard work they have put in, the commitment they have brought to the studio over the 10 month season. It is one
big year-end showcase to really celebrate everything that they put into it,
said Murdoch.
Anyone can come. We sell tickets
through our office, so people can call
the studio office if they are interested in
purchasing tickets, and we can do that
over the phone or they can stop by the
studio, usually between 6 p.m. and 8:30
p.m. we have someone there.
A few of the dancers will be leaving
the studio, having been taught dance
for 12 years by owner Heather Thomas
and her teachers.

Murdoch said the show will be a good

quality show, with well-trained dancers,
high technical caliber, high energy and
lots of fun.
Our goal is to include everybody
that loves dance, so we hope that the
show can give off that feeling that people when they come they leave loving
dance more than they did when the
show started, said Murdoch.
Tickets are $26 and can be purchased
at Expressions the Dance Gallery, located south of Hwy #1 in Canal Garden, or
by calling the studio at 403-901-6392.
The show starts at 4 p.m. on June 21 at
the Jubilee.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Remembering Moncton
To the Editor
Sincere condolences and sympathy are extended to
the family and friends of Const. David Ross, Const.
Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, and Const. Douglas James
Larche on their loss. These thoughts extend to the
community of Moncton and to RCMP officers and
families serving Canada everywhere. It is good to
hear that officers Darlene Goguen and Eric Dubois
are recovering from their injuries; but extremely tragic that any individual or group would be targeted in
such a manner.
When, where or how did the value of human life
come to mean little? It is the names of these fallen

officers that need to be remembered and broadcast rather than the perpetrators. Canadians are and
should be thankful that civic unrest and disruption
are uncommon. Only time will reveal what led to this
horrific event. This writer wonders why anyone falls
into this dark hole. I recall being warned not to stand
too close to the edge in case one might slip in. I welcome the opportunity for someone to shed some light
on this tragedy for me.
Sincerely,
Marcy L Field

My strangest (and only) baby shower!

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
So, I have to rant a little here. I was at a serious
banquet recently, and Grace was being said. Some
guys cell phone rang! Now, thats not the part that
bothered me, because that happens to all of us. Our
cell phones ring when we dont want them to, and
most of us race to mute them, or shut them off. This
guy, however did none of those things, he actually
took the call, and talked on his cell during Grace!
So, while we listened to the meal prayer, we also got
to hear the guy talk on his phone! Now, to me, if
you talk on a cell phone during Grace, you should
be a Head of State dealing with some attack on your
country, a transplant doctor getting word of a donor
for a needy kid, or maybe youre talking to God
yourself! However, when I stood behind him a half
hour later in the dessert line, there didnt appear
to be a major emergency! Sorry, but I am still a bit
stunned who takes a cell call during Grace?
There was a Baby Shower at our house, and no,
Im not going to be a Grandpa! Brennen and I were
pondering staying for a while, even though thered
be a lot of talk about babies. I even set up a play list
on my iPod for them, but I dont think they liked all
the songs. Why wouldnt Metallica fit in to a Baby
Showers tunes? I asked if there were going to be
keg stands later, and should I also get some tequila? The ladies looked at me with their little punch
and wine glasses, and well, I felt judged! Huh, Metallica and Tequila may have been just what the
shower needed or so I thought!
So, Bren and I slipped out to play pool badly at BPs
(you know youre bad when your server actually
mocks you during the game!). Luckily, the bar was
really quiet, so we had very few witnesses to our
terrible skills! After a few pints, and a few hours, we
hoped things would be winding down when we got

back. It was here that we got a taste of why we

left! The gals had played The Baby Diaper Game.
For those of you who dont know, this is a popular
Baby Shower game where there are numbered diapers. In each diaper is placed a melted chocolate
bar! I had to buy these bars and they were: an Oh
Henry, a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup, an Aero Mint,
a Cookies and Crme, and lastly, a Coffee Crisp!
Then, the fun of the game begins! Each lady gets
a turn to touch, smell, and guess which repulsive
looking diaper has which chocolate bar! Then, they
write down their guesses on sheets of paper. For the
guys reading, why would anyone want to practise
looking at sludge they are going to face in a few
months anyway?! I guess the person who has the
most correct picks wins. Can you imagine what a
melted Oh Henry bar looks like in a baby diaper?! I
can, because I foolishly looked, after the game was
over. It was horrible ... I felt nauseous! The only
thing that obviously was missing was any kind of
horrible odor. I wondered what the ladies would
have done if Brennen and I had scooped out some
of the Oh Henry, or Coffee Crisp, and ate them?!
That would have changed up the game, eh?
I must admit, the Oh Henry bar didnt look as bad
as the Coffee Crisp did! I was definitely a bit rattled.
I decided I better have a cold beverage with ice,
you know, to calm my grossed out nerves! In the
fridge were innocent looking ice cubes in trays (or
so I thought). I dropped a few in my glass, and as
the ice melted, I realized that there were tiny babies
in each ice cube! Who does that, and why? I fished
the miniature boy baby out of my drink, and asked
what kind of Baby Shower is this? You people are
sick!
Wow, they have Poopy Diaper games, shrunken kids
on ice, yet we cant have Metallica at the shower! It
did make me wonder if there was still some sick Giant Baby piata game to come!

Thought for
the Week
~

Hope for

present.

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Last week the country listened in shock and horror about the rogue gunman wandering through
Moncton, New Brunswick who had killed three
RCMP officers and injured two others. On Friday, June 6 Strathmore town councillor Bob Sobol took to Facebook to share his thoughts, and
comments on the tragic incident.
This is what he wrote: Pardon me for a bit
of a vent. Dave Ross, an RCMP Dog Handler in
Moncton, was cooking dinner last night (on the
BBQ). He was going to have a nice dinner with
his wife. He was off duty and not on call. He responded to an emergency request for assistance
and left dinner on the BBQ to rush out and assist.
As he arrived, a gunman stepped out and shot
him through the windshield. Dave never stood
a ... chance. He leaves behind a wife who is six
months pregnant and a very young son. The gunman killed two additional RCMP members and
injured two others. I will continue to pray for the
families of these brave people and hope we never have to deal with another situation like this in
Canada. I was never shot at in my 29-year career
in the RCMP, but do not have enough fingers on
my hands to count the times I was in potentially
lethal situations. It is unusual (and devastating)
to lose the very people who are sworn to protect
us and keep us safe. It is not unusual, however, to
have police men and women regularly risk their
lives every day. Soooo, next time you see a peace
officer sitting in Tim Hortons having a coffee remember this. Instead of making silly jokes, (or
derogatory comments) maybe go up and buy him
or her a coffee and say thanks.
Within 72 hours the message had spread like
wildfire across the country. His comment was
shared 8,928 times, over 960,000 people read it
and 1,373 comments were made on it.
Some of the comments brought me to tears,
said Sobol.
He said there were two main messages that
came out of the comments, one is theres a need
to go back to respecting your police, said Sobol.
The other is regret from people for all the negative comments made.
He said people would post about how they
hadnt thought about the RCMP member they see
having a coffee may be on his or her first break
of the day, and some wrote that they needed to
remember to respect the men and women in the
police force because they are putting their lives
on the line for people they dont even know, to
protect them.
Sobol was deeply affected by the outpouring
of support that his comment, meant for his 200
followers at the time its now at 387 garnered.
Some of the comments on Facebook were:
Well said - I too live the life of a dogmans
wife as well I am a regular member myself. Many
times he runs off to a call leaving behind me and
my three year old daughter. In the middle of dinner, special occasions, mowing the lawn, etc. Or
often we are both on shift with our little one at
home with a sitter. She didnt choose this life,
we did. I pray we always come home to her. My
heart is with those families and they will never

be forgotten. - Krista Lynn Wallis-England.

I agree 100 per cent Bob. Too many people
complain about the police, but want them to
stand in the line of fire if they get in trouble. If
you get a ticket its because you broke a law that
is there to protect you and others. If you dont
want the ticket then dont speed, blow a red light
or refuse to fasten your seat belt. All policemen
deserve our respect and help. - Scott Millar
Thank you so much for saying this! My husband is an RCMP member, and every time that
I hear the rude and snarky comments, I think
and if youre in trouble, who do you call? - it
makes me angry that some people choose to create and point out only the negatives; that these
people dont recognize and understand that my
husband, my childrens father - among so many
other police officers - puts on his uniform every
day and goes out to protect and serve. We never
know, for sure, when he walks out the door if
he will be coming home. I am so proud of him
and what he does - what he stands for. But on
the other hand, it scares me beyond words. I can
only imagine the hurt and pain that the family
and friends of the fallen members in Moncton
are feeling. My heart breaks for them as they
grieve the loss of their loved one because of this
senselessness. It is a terrible thing that their children will not have their father, moving forward.
Cst. Ross kids wont ever know him - they will
only know him through stories that they are told.
These three members gave the ultimate sacrifice
and are true heroes! I thank them for their service. - Tammy Hoffart.
Thank you. As a wife of an RCMP that spent
two days and nights tracking this guy down, that
knew the fallen, the pain of this is too intense.
We appreciate that you get it. Pray for the families of the lost officers and the ones left to pick
up the pieces. - Tina Chevarie.
I knew officer Dave Ross - he was one of the
best RCMP officers here in Moncton, who took
the time to get to know me. I would love to send
my thought to his wife and kids. Im sorry for
your loss. To his wife I would like to say your
husband was very well love in this community
and will be missed by all. I also send my thoughts
to the other officers families that were killed and
injured in the line of duty. Thanks RCMP for keep
your town safe. - Duncan Mullin.
You know, people rush about their busy lives,
living and doing what they need to get by each
day, myself included. I do not consider myself a
rude or ignorant person, I have not one ounce
dislike for the police force, but I must say this
mans (Bob Sobol) comment has opened my
eyes, it has never, ever, occurred to me just what
they do each and every day of their lives, that
they either put on their uniform or just like this
says, answer a routine call ... the next time I see
a police officer ... I am just going to simply say
thanks, we send salutes to the men and woman
who fight in the war for our freedom, we have
a secretaries day, a boss day ... do we have even
have a be kind to the officer who took the guns
and drugs off the streets and may have just saved
your life day????? Thanks Bob Sobol - Strathmore
Town Council, you have really made me think today and for that I thank you. - Anna Wonnacott.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~

Christ the Redeemer Catholic School.

Charlies family originated in Posen, Poland and
came to Canada in 1908, originally settling near the
Orange Valley School, south of Strathmore. When they
first arrived they had to stay in the old CPR Hotel until
their house was completed on the small plot of land
they had purchased. They had four children when
the family migrated from Europe, which increased to
13 on arrival here. To provide money for food and
other necessities, father worked for the CPR Irrigation system. After a brief period they moved to Jenner,
where they homesteaded, before moving to a section
of land northeast of Strathmore in 1926. At the time,
this land was just open prairie, so Dad had to break it
in. The younger children attended Hervey School, but
had to help out on the farm when
classes finished. The older children
were already grown and on their
own, when the family moved to the
Strathmore area. As a young man,
Charlie competed in many rodeos,
mainly in the bull riding events. He
rode in the 1937 Calgary Stampede,
and his all-time favorite cowboy was
Herman Linder.
From 1942 to 1945, Charlie served
in the RCAF as an aircraft mechanic
and was stationed in Brandon, Calgary, Montreal, and Northern Alberta. He was never posted overseas.
Charlie returned to farming after
the war, and operated a grain and
cattle operation. He raised purebred
Polled Herefords, and called the herd the Battle Hill
Polled Herefords because he found so many Indian
arrowheads and other artifacts on his land. Their two
daughters often accompanied their father to cattle
shows across Canada and the U.S. Their son became
a heavy-duty mechanic and shop foreman for Wheatland County.
Mardelle has always been a stalwart volunteer in
Strathmore and area. In the 1970s the history book
Along the Fireguard Trail was originated. As co-editor, Mardelle, along with others from Lyalta, Dalroy
and area, spent many evenings getting the book completed. She was a founding member of the Strathmore
Hospital Auxiliary, which was formed in 1984, the

Mardelles fathers family were amongst the pilgrims

who sailed from Plymouth, a port on the south coast
of England, for America on the Mayflower in 1620.
This family, whose surname was Platt, originally settled in Ohio, then moved to Iowa, then Oklahoma,
where Mardelles father, Raymond was born. They
moved to Rimbey, just north and west of Red Deer in
1905. Raymonds father Charles Merritt Platt farmed
north of there for a number of years, then seeing the
need and opportunity, opened a machinery/garage establishment in town. He worked there with his son for
many years, before his son eventually took over.
On her mothers side, the Irwin
family originated in Ireland, with
records going back as far as 1659,
where an early relative - Christopher of Castle Irwin - was the M.P.
for Fermanagh County, in Donegal.
Her grandfather on her mothers
side was born in Indiana, and moved
to Kansas before settling in Rimbey
in 1906. Besides farming he also
worked as a well-driller and a local
preacher.
Mardelle was born in Rimbey,
the second child of seven, which
included three sisters and three
brothers. She attended school in
Rimbey through Grade 12, before attending the University of Calgary in
1948, in the building now known as SAIT, where she
took classes to become an elementary teacher. This
is where she met her husband-to-be, Charlie Bazant
in 1948, and they were married a year later in 1949.
One of Charlies brothers had married Celene, one
of Mardelles sisters. Mardelle taught school in Carbon for several years, before staying home to raise
their three children - two daughters and a son, who
have provided four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. After the children were older, she returned
to work as a substitute teacher at the original Samuel
Crowther Junior High School, which moved and became known as the Junior High School. The site of the
original Samuel Crowther school is now occupied by

year before the Strathmore Hospital was opened. This year she
will celebrate 30 years as a member. She has been an executive of
The Strathmore District Health Foundation since its inception in
1996, and has served as Secretary-Treasurer. As liaison officer for
the foundation, she has frequent meetings with the hospital management, who are currently planning what to do with the vacant
space created by the move of Extended Care to Sagewood. For
over 15 years, she organized and ran the Blood Donor Clinic in
Strathmore. Shes been an active member for over 40 years in the
Catholic Womens League, and for over 25 years has coordinated
the funeral lunches for the Sacred Heart Parish.
Regretfully, Charlie passed away in 2008, and earlier this year
Mardelle started moving into town. She told me she has a full year
to complete her move. She is a very busy lady.

CAN YOU HEAR GODS VOICE?
Many Christians find that genuinely listening to God is one of the
most difficult things to do. We find
ourselves often times saying, I
would do a better job listening, if
God would do a better job speaking. It is not that God who is not
speaking, but it is us that are not
listening. While we try to listen to
Gods voice, we encounter some
obstacles that prevent us from
hearing God.
First obstacle that prevents some
people from listening to God is the
fact that they choose to ignore
Gods voice. In 1 Samuel 3:1-18
we have the story of God calling
Samuel during the night. We see
here that when God calls out
to Samuel, he doesnt just start
speaking. He waits for Samuel
to listen. In verse 10 Samuel
responds: Speak, your servant
is listening. Samuel could have
chosen out of fear, out of not
wanting to know what God had to
say, or any other reason to just
ignore God but instead he chose
to respond and listen to what God
had to say.
Second obstacle that prevents us
to hear God is our busy lives. We
see in this story that God doesnt
speak to Samuel in the busyness

of the day but instead at night

when Samuel slowed down from
a hectic day. In Psalm 46:10 God
says, Be still, and know that I am
God. We must be very intentional
about making time in our busy
schedule to spend with God, and
protect that time no matter what.
Stop and listen.
Third obstacle is that we are all
too often focused on all the wrong
things. A lot of the times, when we
think about God speaking to us we
expect to hear some supernatural
things that would make us sit up
and say, Ok, God, you have my
attention. Sometimes God does
use dramatic things to get our
attention, but, more often than
not, they are the exceptions and
instead, God speaks to us in quiet
and simple ways. In 1 Kings 19:1112 God appears to Elijah in the
still small voice, even though the
prophet expected something more
dramatic than that.
Make sure you eliminate all the
obstacles form your life so that
nothing prevents you from hearing
Gods voice. Jesus said, He who
belongs to God hears what God
says (John 8:47).

Glen Guido Garland was killed in a bobcat incident on June 3. On June 9 a Celebration of Life was
held for him in Carseland, friends and family gathered at the Strathmore Hotel before riding out.

Man with heart of gold remembered

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

His rough-looking exterior may have had a few people turn
away, but his heart of gold was what drew people to Glen
Guido Garland. Garland, 48, was a well-known face in and
around Strathmore and Wheatland County, often seen travelling with his Yorkie Harley, who was also always dressed to
ride.
Last Tuesday, June 3, Garland was in Caresland preparing
the land for his second annual Ride Dogs Ride Motorcycle
Poker Run, which raises funds for the Calgary Humane Society, when tragedy struck.
He was using a bobcat to level out land designated for the
childrens carnival, but the machine was having mechanical
problems. When he got out to check the problem he was
crushed by its bucket.
Garlands wife Diana and their five children quickly agreed
that the Ride Dogs Ride Poker Run will still go on this August
2-3.
There was no doubt in our minds that it was going to happen, it was going to happen one way or another, but I think
its really important because it was what he did full time and
it was what he was passionate about, and I think for us, thats
what his legacy is, said his daughter Daphne.
Even the day that she and her family had found out about
the accident she was in a meeting with Wheatland County
going over details for the August event.

Its how my dad was it was just push through, he always

said build a bridge and get over it, so thats what were doing. It is so true, we just have to build a really big bridge this
time, said Daphne.
He worked so hard at this, he would roll in his grave if he
knew that we stopped, said his son Munden.
He was such a great guy, theres not even a word that can
describe him.
In 2009 Garland got ill with H1N1, and had not been able
to fully return to work since. Thats when he jumped right
into the world of fundraising and volunteering every chance
he could.
I think he genuinely knew what his passion was and unlike most people he actually followed through, said Munden.
Garlands passion was animals and bikes, and it was a passion he combined when he created Ride Dogs Ride, which
sells biker apparel for your dog.
On June 29 there will be a Celebration of Life block party
fundraiser with a silent auction, raffles, outdoor BBQ, bike
wash and more. The event will be held at the Strathmore
Hotel (the green bar) from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The fundraiser is to help ease some of the financial burden
of Garlands widow Diana, so that she can focus on emotionally healing, without having the added worry of financial
stress. Anyone wishing to donate can do so by contacting
either Strathmore Pawn and Collectables, or the Strathmore
Hotel. To buy tickets for the Ride Dogs Ride Poker Run go
online at www.ridedogsride.com.

Ceremonial review
The 903 Strathmore Royal Canadian Air
Cadet Squadron took over the Strathmore
High School gymnasium on June 7 as they
held their 14 annual Ceremonial Review. The
squadron was inspected by Review Officer
Lieutenant Commander Bob Newton and
Captain Barry Duffield the Squadron Commander. Following inspection, awards were
presented to recognize achievements over
the past year after which there was a drill
competition demonstration. The ceremony
ended with a change of command from
Warrant Officer First Class Paul Kerpel to
Warrant Officer Second Class Zachary Anderson. Spectators were then treated to a
pot luck lunch and training accomplishment
displays.

Strathmore High Schools (SHS) production of
Shes the Man was on the stage June 5-8 nightly.
This year drama teacher Paula Richardson had
some help from a student, so much so in fact that
she listed her as assistant director on the program.
Bront Weissig has taken all of the drama
classes, including the advanced acting class. She
helped out as a work experience student this year,
helping Richardson with the directing, editing
and rewriting of the script.
It was a pretty incredible experience, said
Weissig.
Weissig has been working in the theatre since
Grade 8, starting in a one-act festival, and has
worked with Richardson ever since.
I came to the show and the first time I walked
in I thought this is where I want to be this is what
I love and it has been true ever since I have been
here, it has been incredible, said Weissig.
She has been invited to do work shadowing at
Theatre Calgary. Weissig said it was really incredible, and that it was nice to see theatre keeps that
family atmosphere even as you move out of high
school and into professional levels.
There is a family bond as soon as you get into
theatre, especially with a big production. Backstage is fun, its probably the best part, said Weissig.
Going to Theatre Calgary and to see how all
the professionals are like us, they actually are like
us, theyre quirky people who love art, who are
so passionate. Its here, this is what this room is,

Strathmore High School drama 10/20/30 and advanced acting

performed their adapted version of the movie Shes the Man
which is based on the Shakespearean play Twelfth Night on
June 5-8 at 7 p.m. Director Paula Richardson is proud of all the
hard work that went into this performance, it was more challenging than past performances, as they had to change and
edit a lot of the movie version to be able to make it stage worthy. Another great performance by the SHS arts department

its passion, its everything that you need in order

to be an artist and every artist I think in a way is
drawn, and in other forms of art, and in theatre
its always powered me to be artistic.
Recently Weissig went to the one-act play festival for the Drama Zone 5 in Calgary. She took two
pieces as a director. One was a one-act play that
she wrote, directed and acted in, and the other
she wrote and directed - that play won best script
The adjudicator was so impressed with her writing that Weissig is in the process of having a professional look at her play; they are adding to it
and editing it, and the end goal is to get it to go
into an one-act play festival in Calgary, said Richardson. Weissig is one of the youngest people the
adjudicator has ever agreed to work with.
Weissig, who graduated this year, said she
would come back next year and help Richardson
until she finds someone new. For now Weissig
will continue writing and she is hoping with her
scripts she will be able to work with professionals, but as for pursuing an acting career, its not
something in the books for her at this time.

There are a lot of staff at HCC that go above

teachers are here before and after school giving
extra help, coaching and running field trips, etcetera. I feel very privileged to have received this
award as there are many who are deserving of it.
My students work extremely hard to achieve
their absolute best in performance and in class
and therefore I feel the need to work hard to ensure they receive the best education and opportunities I can possibly provide.

SHANNON LECLAIR

On May 20 Lindsey Jepson, a Calgary
paramedic, was at Brentwood Elementary School to speak to the Grade 1 students about safety and being a hero for
their heroes.
Jepson is also a speaker with the John
Petropoulos Memorial Fund ( JPMF).
Const. John Petropoulos passed away
Sept. 29, 2000.
He was investigating a break-andenter call when he happened to step
through a false ceiling, falling nine feet
into the lunchroom below, later succumbing to brain injuries.
I got involved with JPMF because
I know firsthand the dangers and obstacles that first responders face during
even what can be a routine call. Being
an EMT and also being the daughter of
a retired police officer makes this topic
personal, said Jepson.
I remember very clearly the day that
Calgary lost John in the line of duty,
and found myself tormented by the fact
that it wasnt the emergency or the nature of the call itself that took his lifebut rather the premises.
The environment/site/worksite/residence/premises often pose hazards that

are preventable, even when the nature

of the call may not be. Like in Johns
case, had a safety railing been put in
place to indicate that the flooring was
changing, he would still be here. This
was preventable.
Being a mom of three, Jepson is
happy to be giving a presentation to
schools, teaching the kids different
things they can do to make their home,
or school, safe for those who may be
coming help them in some way.
A lot of their presentation was about
how the kids can help emergency responders if they do have to come to
their place for an emergency, which
is kind of a new perspective the kids
hadnt had before, said Grade 1 teacher Mona Funk.
She talked about the importance of
not fighting with your siblings in the
vehicle because your parents have to
concentrate, so keeping them safe, and
the same with on the bus, and the importance of not being noisy because
the bus driver needs to concentrate. So
a lot of what they can do to just help
ensure the safety of others and the
emergency responders if they come.
JPMF is free for a school to invite into
their classrooms. For more information
visit their website (www.jpmf.ca).

An ounce of prevention
SHARON MCLEAY

Deadly statistics quieted a room of
men and women in Wheatland County
council on May 20, as Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officer
Ryan Schur read a roll call of safety
violations leading to mortalities to the
packed council room.
One hundred and eighty-eight people
died in Alberta last year from workplace
injuries, said Schur.
Schur has seen where a momentary
lapse in worker judgement, a silent coworker and companies cutting corners
have left families without their fathers
and sons. People have lost limbs, and
injuries force them to go through years
of rehabilitation. Violations and subsequent prosecution have closed company
doors for good.
Schur regrets that he had to investigate these deaths and said they are often
totally preventable. He gave examples of
an unsafe excavation that killed a worker as the wall caved in, a worker crushed
by falling debris due to a bent scaffold
shelf leg, and the 2009 incident where

a three-year-old Calgary girl was cut in

half from flying sheet metal, left unsecured at a site and picked up by strong
winds.
This is where I get passionate about
health and safety, said Schur. I have
been to enough accidents.
He also said financial boom time
breeds negligence.
When theres a boom, we have untrained labour and people getting hurt,
said Schur.
He commented that young people or
new immigrant workers going into their
first jobs are often fearful of speaking
out and work in unsafe environments.
Unions dont have the power they used
to, to get employers to respond to complaints. Schur also said he would like to
see safety requirements for farm operations, which is not currently covered under their mandate.
Schur said attitudes about health and
safety have to change. He said he rarely
gets to speak to workers in a proactive
way, before the call comes in for an inspection or investigation. He complimented the county for being proactive,
by putting good workplace guidelines in

Justice under a hardhat

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Until recently, the Occupational Health
and Safety (OHS) had little teeth in its
powers of authority, but OHS Officer
Ryan Schur said things are changing,
which means workplaces will be monitored to ensure worker safe environments.
Workers had concerns, but there were
no regulations for enforcement. I am
very happy the new minister is now behind us 100 per cent, said Schur.
Schur said the department has authorization to double its investigative staff.
New regulations give the inspectors
the authority to shut down workplaces,
ticket workers and employers, and lay
fines and charges for unsafe workplaces.
First offences for employers can mean
$500,000 fines or six months in jail, second offences up to $1,000,000 or a year
in jail. One employer in Quebec received
a sentence of 10 years. Charges of criminal negligence causing death can also be
laid.
Schur said there are still many challenges to overcome.
Some employers, like a development
company who was charged in 2012 under an OHS investigation, escape consequences of their actions by declaring
bankruptcy.
The Calgary Herald reported the judge
had awarded a $2.4 million dollar judgment against the company, as a message
to other contractors that cutting corners
at the expense of worker safety was not
to be tolerated.
In this case, a 15 meter wall collapsed
killing truck driver Randy Williams. D.
Slade reported the developer did not
even show for the familys victim statement. He quoted Williams wife as saying,
They were here to give witness (evi-

dence), but they werent here to listen to

our story, the story that told of Randys
life, that horrible day sitting at home
waiting for him to show up and trying to
contact him on his cell phone, then overhearing my son Matthews horrific cell
phone conversations, me asking to find
out where his father was, to hear that
comment being screamed out in agony
and pain, what do you mean a wall fell
on him and youre sorry?
Her son Ryan, who worked with his father but was not present where the incident occurred, called the companies absence from the proceedings cowardly.
Schur said the company has subsequently opened up a new company and
is currently operating a new business.
Schur said accidents have tremendous
impacts on family members lives. They
are hoping to change minds and attitudes towards responsibility for health
and safety in workplace environments.
Employer safety ratings are posted on
the OHS website, as information for potential workers and as an incentive for
employers to ensure healthy and safe environments.

programs see: www.work.alberta.ca/occupational-health-safety.html or contact

20-year member honoured

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

On May 22 the Lt. Governor of Alberta, Donald S. Ethell presented Strathmore Fire Department (SFD) Captain
Bas Owel with the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal.
On June 4 Owel was recognized
again, this time by Strathmore town
council, and by Strathmore-Brooks MLA
Jason Hale.
Bas is an outstanding member of the
Strathmore Fire Department, his contributions are many and reflect his own
commitment and dedication to the fire
services. Throughout his career Bas has
fulfilled every position within our department with the utmost professionalism, said SFD Fire Chief Muir Furzer.
Captain Owels knowledge in emergency services manner is broad based
and factual. As vice president of operations for Global Fire Training Solutions,

Bas contributed to fire services training

on a global scale teaching industrial
firefighting in many countries outside
of Canada.
In Strathmore Owel also commands a
firefighting company and on many occasions fulfills the position of incident
commander. Furzer said Owel instills
confidence with his leadership skills
and is respected.
Hale did get the pleasure of actually
attending the ceremony where Owel
was recognized by Ethell, which he
said was very special.
It is hard to express the gratitude
that is felt to the members of the different detachments around the province,
they provide such a service to all of our
communities that is so outstanding and
our communities rely on their good
work day after day, said Hale.
Its nice that we get to recognize
members such as yourself for their hard
work, dedication and sacrifice and also
to thank your families for allowing you
to serve the public as you do.
Mayor Michael Ell presented Owel

Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale, and Strathmore Town council recognized Captain Bas Owel
with the Strathmore Fire Department for his 20
years of exemplary service on June 4 in the council chambers. MLA Jason Hale (l) and Captain

the town. The plaque states that firefighters are a rare breed, they are often
the first at any disaster, well equipped
to deal with fires, first aid, and volatile
situations due to rigorous training. It
has been said that firefighters never die,
instead they live forever in the hearts of
people whose lives they have impacted.
Owel is a tribute to the profession, a
true hero and a valuable member of the
community, said Ell.

Bikers ride for Kids Cancer Care

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

The motorcycles rolling into Strathmore on June 20 through
22 arent an episode shoot for the TV show Sons of Anarchy,
but transport for charitable contributors and participants in
the 15th annual Strathmore Bike Poker Run.
The ride is a way to raise funds for the Kids Cancer Care
Foundation of Alberta. The organization has supported children since 1986 with camping opportunities, help through
treatment for the child and their family, research into pediatric oncology, and scholarships for child cancer survivors.
Organizer Lynette Halwa said the event started after friends
lost a loved one to bone cancer and a group was formed to
honour his fight against cancer. Since then 100-150 people
take part yearly and funds from the Strathmore run have
topped $150,000 since its inception. There are opportunities
for corporate donations and it is a good way for area businesses to contribute to the community as well.
Events begin Friday night at 6 p.m. at the Strathmore Station, where those brave enough will get a very public head
shave for charity, which is sure to be a main attraction for
patrons.
Registration for the Poker Ride will begin Saturday at 9

a.m., at the Strathmore Station, where riders pay their fee,

gain a map of the run and get their beginning card for their final poker hand. There is a possibility of a $10,000 win to slap
into their saddlebags, if they manage the perfect hand. Halwa
likened the win to a hole-in-one for the game of golf. Riders
participate in events at their own risk, although a pacer car
will be on hand for breakdowns or to call for emergencies.
On Saturday evening at the end of the run, there is a BYOB
BBQ, music and a dance at a nearby farm 5.5 miles north of
town on Hwy 817 (look for the SPR banner). Those who dont
ride can buy tickets for the supper and dance as well. Camping is available. Sunday will feature breakfast and Bike games
and it is designated as a family friendly day, but they ask that
pets remain at home.
Halwa said all types of bike enthusiasts participate, but cautioned that bad attitudes and bad behaviour need to be left
behind.
It is a great time; you meet so many new people. I would
encourage everyone to come on out and have fun, said Halwa.
Tickets for the poker ride, supper and camping are $40, or
$30 just for the Saturday night events and camping. For more
info and tickets show up at the Station on Saturday, or call
Lynette Halwa at 587-727-0611.

Alberta 55+ Summer Games

The Strathmore 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games is starting to rally financial support, and local supporters are taking
the lead. As of June 6, the Friends of the Games committee
has raised approximately $100,000 of in-kind donations from
local businesses. Strathmore will host the 2015 Alberta 55 Plus
Summer Games July 16-19, 2015. Local sponsors are seeing
the games as both a community and professional opportunity.
The Strathmore Times has become a games media partner.
Mario Prusina, Strathmore Times publisher, says, as Strathmores only locally owned and operated newspaper, we feel it
is important to support the community. The Strathmore 2015
Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games will provide the local economy a shot in the arm and we are excited to be part of it.
The games will bring 1,500 attendees from eight zones,
spanning across the entire province, to Strathmore to compete
in 17 sport and cultural events. Hundreds of tourists, spectators and volunteers are also expected to set foot in the town.
Hopefully the games will influence more and more people
to visit our community and indirectly help the growth and
economy for Strathmore, says Gold Key Insurance & Registry operators and Companion of the Games sponsors, Jayson
and Julia Marshall. The event is good exposure for the town.
Supporting the games was something we were able to do as
a 24 year Strathmore family-owned business. We hope to con-

In June 2013, The Town of Strathmore
won the bid to host the 2015 Alberta 55
Plus Summer Games. The Games will
leave a lasting legacy of community upgraded facilities and provincial exposure.
We are not just hosting multiple athletic competitions that we hope will inspire increased local participation, but
we will showcase our corner of Alberta
to representatives from all over the province, said Donalda Ledene, chair of the
2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games.
Once our visitors have had a taste of
local hospitality and enjoyed their weekend in Strathmore, I am confident they
will spread the word of what a great
place our town is and will return.
The Town of Strathmore, Alberta
Sport, and local sponsors contributions
bring the events total to-date fundraising efforts to just over $370,000, only 37
per cent of the events need of $1 million. Cash and in-kind donations are
needed to help upgrade facilities, host
the event, and promote the games.

The Strathmore High School Spartans rugby teams hosted provincials at the Calgary Rugby Union June 6-7. This was the second
go at provincials for the girls, who last had a chance to vie for a
provincial spot four years ago.
The weekend went awesome, it was crazy busy. We had almost
1,000 participants and over 1,600 spectators, so it was a huge
event, said girls coach Jerry Flaws.
We definitely need to thank the parents, the staff, the students
who all volunteered countless hours out there to make that happen.
The games started out good with Flaws saying that the girls
played awesome. The first game was against Beaumont and the
girls took it 26-8. The second game was against the number one
team in the province F.P. Walshe.
We were only down 10 in the half and we stuck with them, and
stuck with them and then they kind of blew the doors out in the
end. Then we played Springbank again in the bronze medal game
and our girls wanted it more. The teams are fairly close but our
girls were hungry and they werent going to be beat, said Flaws.
The girls took the bronze medal, and making the victory even
sweeter is the fact that the week before they had lost to Springbank in zones, so redemption was had.
This is the first time the girls rugby team has medaled at provincials, something Flaws is very proud of.
Our Grade 12s have worked very hard for three years to get to
this point, so Im very excited that we came off, said Flaws.
Nine of the girls are graduating this year, but Flaws still has a
good core for next years team with the 17 remaining players.
One thing he attributes to the success of the team this year is
bringing Keenan Fanning on board as another coach. He worked
specifically with the backs and, Flaws said, the backs are brilliant;
they ran plays that the girls had never had before, they ran plays
in the backs that worked.

Strathmore was the host for this years 2014

ASAA Rugby Provincials held in Calgary June
6-7 at the Calgary Rugby Union. This was the
first time the boys have had a shot in provincials and coaches Brad Steele and Tim Popel
said they played with a lot of heart.
They played the number one-ranked team
in Alberta - the team that won this years
championship. Although the score was very
lopsided, the Spartans never gave up and
kept battling hard the whole game, said
Steele.
Game two was a similar experience, except
the boys managed to keep the scores a little
more even, and scored a try. The last game
the team jelled, playing well and managing
to win the game.
At least four different Spartan players
scored tries. We played a man short, yet we
still won the game, said Steele.
It was a great effort by the team. We finished off on a positive note, which was great
for the team. We knew we would be in for a
very tough go in the first two games and that
is how it played out. To win a game at this
level is a great accomplishment for our boys.
This year the Spartan boys won the sportsmanship award and banner, with Travis Luehr winning the individual player sportsmanship award.

The Strathmore Triathlon is designed

to celebrate and encourage
athletes of ALL ages, levels and abilities.

June 21st, 2014

Brent Blvd. will be closed

from 7 am - 3 pm for Triathlon

This is the second time that a Strathmore

High School team has brought home a
sportsmanship banner, both times happening
this school year, and both teams having been
coached by Steele.
Another player, team, coach or referee has
to submit a player or team for the award, so
it is an award given by your peers, which
makes it even more special.
Rugby is a very aggressive sport, and each
player must be able to maintain control of
their emotions in a stressful situation. Any intent of injuring another player is against the
laws of rugby, and the spirit of the game.
Winning two sportsmanship awards at
provincials this year is something for Strathmore High School to be very proud of. In
curling, as in rugby, sportsmanship is part
of the game. Mrs. Ledene and I were very
proud of our boys curling team in both how
they handled victories and how they handled
defeats, said Steele.
They were a very nice group of young
men and it was noticed and rewarded by
the players and coaches at provincials this
year. The same holds true for the rugby players. Their sportsmanship reflects well on our
school and the Strathmore area. As coaches
Mrs. Ledene (in curling), Mr. Popel and I,
can only teach the appropriate behavior and
rules. The players must buy in to the spirit of
the games. They did this, and it was noted by
others. We couldnt be more proud.

Hawks rugby team seeks league play 2015

JACKIE DALSTRA
Holy Cross Collegiate

Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) has a girls rugby
team thanks to coaches who have volunteered
their time to help form, and train the team.
With lots of hard work and dedication this team
spent the entire last year, 2013, practicing and developing their skills. They were not able to play in
any leagues as they were thought to be too new
of a team. They needed to prove themselves. Last
years highlight was entering in the Springbank
sevens tournament. We left that tournament winning two games, tying two games and losing two
games. It was a great weekend, and a great experience for our team.
This year I think they are well on their way

No Glass Bottles Anywhere

to proving just that. We have been to two tournaments and played Crowther a few times this
season. We entered our senior team and joined
Crowther to form a junior girls team in the May
30 tournament. The senior girls HCC team left
that tournament with medals and a very deserved
second place. They had also played three games
against a senior Calgary team told to be very
tough and strong.
The entire team (and their parents) would like
to send out a huge thank you to our coach Brennan Grasdahl and Mrs. Toungay for stepping up
and making this a wonderful season. Our senior
team should be very proud of what they have accomplished this year. Hopefully next year we will
join the league as now we have proven we can
hold our own.

Twenty-five Holy Cross Collegiate
(HCC) students were off to Calgary on
June 3 to take part in the 2014 South
Central Zone junior high track and field
meet.
This years HCC junior high track
and field Team was exceptionally hard
working. We had many athletes come
to all four practices each week, said
HCCs Athletic Director Darren Perizzolo.
This dedication showed as we had
the highest number of athletes qualify
for the South Central Zone Championship than any other year. We had a
number of great performances, personal bests, and top five finished in indi-

vidual events.
For the Grade 7 girls triple jump Hannah Anderson placed fourth.
Becky Driver came fifth for the Grade
8 javelin throw, and Madisson Tiffin and
Darcie Weir in Grade 9 placed third and
fourth in the long jump. The boys Grade
7 1,500 metre run saw Jordon Kowbel
finish in second place. Reid Jensen was
fourth in the 80 metre hurdles. Alex
Nwoye was fifth in the boys high jump,
and third in the long jump. Zach Palardy placed fifth in shot put and in Grade
8 Alex Torrez took fifth for the 80 metre
hurdles. In Grade 9 Nathan Heuver was
fourth in the 800-metre run, and Chris
Rebeyka took fourth for the 400-metre
dash and for the 100 metre hurdles.
Cooper Fargey finished in fifth in the
triple jump.

Boys place 5th

at zones
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The
Strathmore
High
School boys soccer team
were off to zones this past
weekend, June 6 and 7.
Coach Kaitrin Mcdonnell
said the boys played some of
their best games of the season.
They played Cochrane in
the quarterfinals. Cochrane
managed to get the win, but
SHS held them to a onepoint game. The final game
for the boys against Springbank was to determine who
would place fifth and sixth

in the zone. Mcdonnell said

it was an eventful game.
Our starting goalie who
sustained a wrist injury in
the previous game came out
in the second half with a
3-1 trailing score- the team
came back to win it 5-4 with
Fanen Hungwa scoring all
four goals, beautifully set up
by all the supporting players
around him, said Mcdonnell.
We were hungry for the
win and the ball kept finding
the back of the net.
Strathmore beat Springbank with a final score of
5-4, placing the boys fifth in
the zone.

Golf tourney returns

for 8th year
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The eighth annual Emergency Services Golf
tournament is ready to get underway on June 20
at the Strathmore Golf Course. Staff Sgt. Kevin
Reilly first started the golf tournament when he
took a posting in the community.
Part of the reason why I started the tournament seven and a half years ago is we wanted
to be involved in our community, do some good
and have people interact with our members and
us, and see us in a different light, whether its us,
fireman, ambulance, town constables. Seeing us in
a light thats different than us bringing your kid
home at three in the morning, said Reilly.
The funds raised from the tournament are donated to Victim Services each year, with a portion,
usually $2,000, being donated to Hospital Auxiliary.
The thought behind making VSU the main organization funds are raised for was the fact that everyone can use VSU, not just victims of crime. The
money raised helps VSU with getting equipment
and helps them attend additional workshops, seminars and training past the technical requirements
for becoming an advocate.
Another thing he thought was important is donating to another organization or charity that also
benefits everyone within the area.
Over the past six years the funds have been donated to the hospital, with the direction to use
them in the emergency room. Over the past eight
years over $100,000 has been raised, with approximately $12,000 of that going to the hospital. The
first few years the Community Crisis Society had
received funding, not the hospital.
A number of community members and organizations have been supporters since the inception of
the tournament, including Global Training Centre
(GTC).
GTC has been the tournament sponsor for the
past few years. They had always supported it, but
when the opportunity arose to be a main supporter they snapped it up.
Global Training Centre is about saving lives so
is emergency services. We have been affiliated and
some of us have been on the fire department, we
still have active members on the fire department,
as well the ambulance services so it is the perfect
synergy for us to be involved in this tournament,
support the local community and the great causes
that the emergency services golf tournament supports, said President of GTC Delor Silva about
their involvement.

for continued support of the Emergency Services Golf Tournament.

Shannon LeClair Photo

Everyone gets a power cart between two people,

playing in groups of four for best ball. Reilly said
it is a fun tournament, no handicaps, and they are
not worried about who is winning and whos losing, though they do keep score and have a trophy
for the winners and a plaque for the most honest
team.
Every golfer gets a little gift bag at the beginning
of the tournament, and prizes are given out at the
end for a number of different reasons.
Out on the course itself there are lots of things
to do in addition to playing your 18 holes. The
Strathmore Fire Department sells smokies and
drinks, and has a chipping contest, LubeCity will
be back also with smokies. There are hole-in-one
prize holes, a closest to the line drive, a putting
contest and lots more.
Inside there will be items out for the silent
auction, and there will be a steak dinner before
awards and prizes are given out.
There is a number of different ways you can
support the tournament, you can make a donation
for a gift of any sort for a team prize or a silent
auction item to be sold to raise money, said Reilly.
They can obviously play in the tournament, like
I said its $125 a player, or they can sponsor a hole.
Its $500 to sponsor a hole and with that they get
one free registration.
The tournament costs $125 per player, and up to
144 golfers can be entered in. Registration is the
morning of the tournament at 8 a.m., and to preregister contact Tammy Cooper at VSU 403-9346552, or Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly at 403-934-3968.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our wonderful mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, and friend
on June 9, 2014. Betty lived for her children and her grandchildren. She
was so proud of everything that they have accomplished, no matter how
small. Betty was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, to Les and Jessie Nolan on
May 5, 1945. She was the third in a family of five girls. She met the love of
her life, Bob Johnson, in 1965 and they were married in 1966. After starting out as a family in Calgary, Alberta, Betty and Bob moved into Carseland, Alberta, in December of 1980; a home that she had resided in until
her passing. She was a true community person, holding various volunteer
positions throughout the years including, but not limited to, the Carseland
School, the Carseland Curling Rink, the Carseland Community Association,
and Minor Ball. She held a job at the Carseland Post Office for over fifteen
years, where she enjoyed visiting with all of the people who came to get
their mail. When the kids were growing up she considered so many of
the other young people of Carseland to be her kids too, and would love
them like her own. She would also scold them like her own too! When Bob
passed away in November of 2001, a piece of Betty passed away too. She
often mentioned maybe selling her house and moving somewhere smaller,
however she couldnt seem to cut that final cord. She recently mentioned
that she really didnt want to move because she really loved her house. We
arent sure if it was the house so much as the memories that came with it
that she loved. Betty leaves behind her children Lisa (Douglas) Thiessen,
Lona Johnson (Douglas Butler), and Robbie (Noralea) Johnson; six grandchildren, Dustin, Reanna, Jennifer, and Chelsea Thiessen, and Avery and
Chase Johnson; four sisters and their families; and Bobs three siblings
and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Les and Jessie
Nolan; Bobs parents Mel and Vivian Johnson; grandson Derek Thiessen;
nephew Bill Ogryzlo; and her sister-in-law Fran Johnson. She was also
predeceased by the love of her life, Bob. They are together again after 12.5
years. A memorial service to celebrate Bettys life will be held on Monday,
June 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Carseland Community Hall. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made directly to the Alberta Childrens Hospital
Foundation (2888 Shaganappi Trail, N.W., Calgary, T3B 6A8). To send condolences, please visit Bettys obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

DID YOU KNOW?

2 IMPORTANT TIPS FOR
SELLING YOUR HOME:
Boost curb appeal. This is something you always hear, and with
very good reason. Many people thinking of touring your home will
do a quick drive-by first, often deciding on the spot if it is even
worth a look inside. Make sure your home is ready to lure in onlookers with these tips:
Power wash siding and walkways
Hang easy-to-read house numbers
Plant blooming flowers and fresh greenery
Mow lawn, and reseed or add fresh sod as needed
Wash front windows
Repaint or stain the porch floor as needed
Get your house sparkling clean. From shining floors and gleaming windows to clean
counters and scrubbed grout, every surface should sparkle. This is the easiest (well, maybe
not easiest, but certainly the cheapest) way to help your home put its best foot forward. You
may want to hire pros to do some of the really tough stuff, especially if you have a large
house. Dont skimp -- this step is key!
