CHARACTERS IN CHERRY ORCHARD

Lyubov Ravenskaya: A middle aged woman, very attractive, ostentatious, commanding and a
woman of strong nerves, psychologically shattered but mentally formidable, the owner of Ravensky`s
estate, whose lover has left her in the lurch and had fled to Paris. She is a heart- broken and conscious-
stricken lady who has lost her son, Garish (a young lad) who was drowned and now she is just back from
Paris and she possesses a very beautiful Cherry Orchard which has reached at the brink of being
auctioned. She is through an aristocratic lady yet a despairing failure.
Yermlay Lopakhin: A young flourishing businessman whose ancestors had once been the
peasants at the state of Ravensky`s and through his diligence and devotion, he had been able to build
dachas to let them after he had bought the Cherry Orchard that they have to let loose from their hands.
He is in love with no one rather he is more materialistic than being amorous. He is seduced by Varya
(Madam Lyubov`s adapted daughter) but his shrewdness towards her material pursuits gains him
financial success not the emotional success.
Peter Trofimov: Tutor to Madam Ravenskay`s deceased son (Grisha) who has rich philosophical
approach and he has acted here as an intellectual outlet for the writer`s philosophy of life. He is an
idealistic person and seeks shelter in the shadow of his intellectual caliber. He crakes jokes in the play to
make it look like a comedy but in reality, he throws light on the vices of Russian society.
Anya (Anushka): A young, beautiful and idealistic teen, daughter of Lyubov Ravenskaya and she is
quite plain and simple in her intellectual approach, she has been a carefree type of cheerful girl strolling
the corridors of Ravensaky`s state offering verve and veracity.
Varya (Varvra Mihailovna): Madam Lyubov`s adopted daughter, very commanding in her
appearance lke her foster mother as she carries a big bunch of keys and seems to be the manager of the
whole estate. She is in love with Lopakhin and hopes to marry that loveless bachelor.
Leonid Gayev: Lyubov`s older unmarried (possibly celibate) brother who lives as a parasite and
relaxes like a drone. He is very fond of playing billiard and depicts the balls with Russian political and
economic state. He is very imprudent rather poses to be modest.
Boris Pischik: A landowner entirely stuck in the whirlpool of debts and a man of many words and
continuously seeks more debts from the Ravenskay`s and further plunges down in the vortex of financial
strain without an iota of care or anxiety.
