PresidentRandyDunn,whosucceededformerpresidentCynthia
Andersonsevenmonthsago,hasagreedtobecomethenewpresident
ofSouthernIllinoisUniversity.InameetingwiththeYSUBoardof
TrusteesMondayevening,Dunnresignedhiscurrentpositioneffective
Aug.16.
Dunn,whotookthehelmatYSUinJuly,hadsignedathreeyear
contractwithYSU.TheboardmetwithDunnonMondayformore
thantwoandahalfhours.
Atanewsconferenceafterward,DunnsaidthedecisiontoleaveYSU
soquicklywasnotaneasyone,butitwaswhathedescribedasa
"unique"opportunity.
"Iunderstandthatsomemayfeelasenseofbetrayal,butIhaveto
pointoutthatthiswasauniqueopportunityandthedecision(toleave
YSU)wasnotmadelightly,"hesaid.
YSUboardpresidentDr.SudershanGargsaidtrusteeswerenotmade
awareofDunn'sintentiontovacatehisnewpositionandwere"very
unhappy"tohearthenews.
AtSIU,Dunnwillbepaid$430,000a$55,000increasefromhis
currentsalaryatYSU,whichalsoincludedbenefitssuchasavehicle,
professionaldues,travel,entertainmentandrelocationexpenses.He
andhisfamilyresideinthePollockHouseonWickAvenue,another
perkofbeingpresidentofYSU.
Dunn'sstartdateatSIUhasnotyetbeenannounced,butthe
contractforSIU'scurrentpresident,GlennPoshard,willexpireJune
30.
UnderDunn'scontractwithYSU,heisrequiredtogivetheuniversity
180daysadvancedwrittennoticeofhisresignation.Dunnsaidthat
heintendstoremainwiththeuniversityforthefull180days,butthe
YSUBoardofTrusteeswillretaintherighttoallowhimtoleaveatany
pointwithoutfurthercompensation.
"IfeelthatIhavenotbreechedmyagreementwiththeuniversity,as
Ihavegiventhemnotice,"Dunnsaid."Iftheboardwastotellme
tomorrowthatmyobligationtothemisfulfilled,Iwillstepaside
withoutanyfinancialcompensation.Theboardonlyowesme
(compensation)fordaysworked."
GargsaidtheboardcurrentlyintendstokeepDunnforthedurationof
histerm,citingtheneedforleadershipduringthetransitionperiod.
"Itisgoingtotakefourtosixmonthstofindareplacement,"Garg
said."Withoutsomeonetoheadtheuniversityduringthattime,itwill
makeitdifficulttofunction."
DunnsaidSIUoperatesitssearchesunderstrictconfidentiality,and

involvementwiththeposition.
"Itwasajudgmentcall(tonotalertYSUofhisinvolvement),"Dunn
said,addingthatheneverofficially"applied"fortheposition."Thatis
howSIUhandleditslastthreepresidentsearches,andIwantedto
respectthat."
TheYSUboardwillnowhavetobeginanotherexhaustivesearch
process,whichinthepasthasinvolvedcommitteesandprofessional
consultants.
"Obviously,thisisnotagoodreflectionontheuniversity,"Gargsaid,
ofDunn'sdecisiontoabruptlyleave."Butwefeltthatwefoundthe
rightcandidatewhenwehired(Dunn),andIbelieveitshowsthathe
hasbeenstolenaway(by)anotheruniversity."
DunnistheformerpresidentofMurrayStateUniversity.Priortothat,
hewasassociateprofessorofeducationandeducationdepartment
chairatSIU.Hiswife,Rhonda,alsoattendedSIU.
