Madhya Pradesh is the heart State of the country haing a forest area of
34.356 of its total geographical area and endo*ed *ith rich and dierse
forest resources and is a reseroir of !iodiersity.

"esere consists of Panna 8ational Park, Gangau *ildlife sanctuaries
along *ith the +en Gharial Sanctuary. The rier +en passes through the
Park, adding to its scenic !eauty. The region is also famous for its
diamonds.

The idea of #iosphere "esere *as introduced for the delineation of a
num!er of protected areas all oer the *orld so that they are consered in
their present state. The #iosphere resere is kno*n as the life )one of the
$arth and includes all liing organisms, including man, and all organic
matter that has not yet decomposed.
There are fourteen #iosphere "eseres in ,ndia, out of *hich Pachmarhi
and -chanakmar'-markantak 0an interstate2 hae !een notified as the
#iosphere "eseres on the !asis of the mapping and statistics generated
!y the /orest & $nironment Diision of "emote Sensing -pplications
Centre of the M.P. Council of Science & Technology.
Such conseration actiities are the need of the day. ,n this project
!aseline information on forest coer and landuse in terms of location,
e%tent and spatial distri!ution has !een generated through remote sensing
techni9ue and G,S. , hope the data gathered in this project *ill help and
facilitate the planners to understand the area in a !etter *ay, so that micro
leel studies and conseration plan can !e undertaken.

#iological diersity, or :!iodiersity,: refers to the ariety of life on earth. Term
!iodiersity is coined !y 1alter G. "osen in 4;<7. The /ather of =#iodiersity> is $.(
1ilson. -s defined !y the ?nited 8ations Conention on #iological Diersity, it includes
diersity of ecosystems, species and genes, and the ecological processes that support them.
8atural diersity in ecosystems proides essential economic !enefits and serices to human
society ' such as food, clothing, shelter, fuel and medicines ' as *ell as ecological,
recreational, cultural and aesthetic alues, and thus plays an important role in sustaina!le
deelopment. #iodiersity is under threat in many areas of the *orld. Concern a!out glo!al
!iodiersity loss has emerged as a prominent and *idespread pu!lic issue.

The state of Madhya Pradesh has an e%tremely large forest area'@A,B5; s9. kms.,out of the
total geographical area of 3,C<,5B7 km5., i.e. 3C.<;6 The eleation of Madhya Pradesh
ranges from 3CC to 3,;CC feet 0;C to 4,5CC metres2. ,n the northern part of the state the land
rises generally from south to north, *hile in the southern part it increases in eleation
to*ard the *est.. The temperature in summer e%ceeds B7C C e%cept in hilly region. The
temperature during *inters aries from 7C C to 57C C. The rainfall ranges from 47CC mm in
the eastern and southern regions to less than <CC mm in the *estern )one. (n account of its
si)e and aried ha!itats, its enironment supports a uni9ue and *ide ariety of plant life.
-lmost eery plant family is represented in ,ndiaDs rich flora. (ut of these $03. of the
species hae medicinal alue. #iodiersity of Madhya Pradesh is e%tremely rich *ith a *ide
ariety of species. The conseration and sustaina!le use of this #iodiersity is fundamental
to ecologically sustaina!le deelopment.
Situated on the genetic high*ay connecting the 1estern Ghats and the 8orth $ast part of the
country, *hich are the !iodiersity hotspots in the country, the central ,ndian State of
M0,2.0 Pr0,e-2 +- o3e o1 t2e r+c2e-t repo-+tor+e- o1 %+o/o4+c0/ ,+#er-+t.. The state
houses a diersity of ecosystems including plateaus, raines, ridges, alleys, riparian areas
and the Tiger state status houses one of the richest faunal and floral diersity. 1ith around
7''' p/03t -pec+e-, these forests are ha!itat to as many as 7'' %+r, species and (8' 1+-2
species. T2o5-03,- o1 r+ce c5/t+#0r-" a rich diersity of minor millets, indigenous cattle and
poultry landraces like +adaknath !oasts of the agro'!iodiersity.
-s per official statistics the forests of Madhya Pradesh are !roadly classified into "esered
/orests 07<,@3B s9. kms.2, Protected /orests 037,7<@ s9. kms.2 and ?nclassified /orests 0 ;CC
s9. kms.2
Madhya Pradesh has nearly <.C76 appro% of the tiger population of the country. &er!iors
like the chital, sam!ar, !lack !uck, chinkara, nilgai, *ild !oars etc., roam a!out freely in the
forests of the state. #ut this *ildlife is gradually getting threatened in the *ild !ecause of
poaching and d*indling of ha!itat.The animal genetic resources make a large contri!ution to
food and agriculture production !ut this resource is no* !eing threatened. ,mportant
diersity is !eing lost, there!y reducing the options for achieing sustaina!le agriculture and
food security.-nimals are intricate part of agro'eco'systems, proiding food, fi!er, manure
and fuel.They proide @C6 of draught po*er for the rural communities and can proide a
critical
safety net for farmers and communities *hen crops fail. /or many farmers and
herders,animals also represent an asset that proides security. The state has a total of BA@
lakh animals out of *hich cattle and !uffaloes constitute @;6, goat 4@ 6 and remaining B6
animals include pig, sheep and other animals. ,mportant recogni)ed !reeds of cattle
considered as natie !reeds of Madhya Pradesh are EMal*iF and E8imariF. EGaolaoF !reed is
found all oer E.idar!hF region of Maharashtra and adjoining areas of Madhya Pradesh
0Chhind*ara dist.2 and E+ankatthaF !reed of cattle in Panna district. Similarly, EB20,090r+F
!reed of #uffalo is found in a!undance at #hind and G*alior districts. EGaloniF !reed of
sheep is found in Tikamgarh and Shipuri *hich forms the !order *ith Ghansi and Galaun
districts of ?ttar Pradesh. EGamnapariF !reed of goat is found in arious illages near
cham!al rier. EMal*i camelF are also found in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh. ,n the
poultry sector E+adaknathF is the natie !reed of Madhya Pradesh found at Gha!ua and Dhar
districts of Madhya Pradesh.

#iodiersity -ct, sees its role in this conte%t as that of sheath anchor.

the state and their documentation is under process. The "emote Sensing -pplications Centre
has !een associated *ith this theme since the inception of the idea. The mapping and
generation of the soft*are hae !een done !y the /orest & $nironment Diision of "emote
Sensing -pplications Centre, MPCST *hile the data collection !y the MPS##.
M.P. Council of Science & Technology *as esta!lished under MP Society "egistration -ct,
4;@3 in (cto!er, 4;<4. -pe% !ody of the Council is General #ody and Chief Minister is the
President of General #ody. There are A4 mem!ers consisting of ministers and secretaries if
different state department and head of the departments of 1ater resources, P&$, P1D,
/orest, -griculture, ,ndustry and Technical education. ,n addition, B ice'chancellors from
uniersities, eminent Scientist in science, Sociology and Medical sciences are nominated as
mem!er !y the president.
The Major "oles of this Centre is to proide an operational remote sensing !ased natural
resource information !ase to assist actiities on deelopment H management of natural
resources and infrastructure planning in the "egion.

aaila!le in the state. Madhya Pradesh is the centre state and is one of the most dierse State

,t is surrounded !y Maharashtra and Chattisgarh, from the south side, !y Gujarat in *est
side, ?ttar Pradesh and "ajasthan in the north, and #ihar and Gharkhand in east. -nd !eing
its uni9ue position it has *ide erities of all the diersitiesHliing organisms.

$%ploitation, conseration and sustaina!le utili)ation of natural resources at local leel and
glo!al leel is the need of the &our. ,ndia in general and Madhya Pradesh in particular still
hae rich !iodiersity in spite of manifold increase in population pressure in our forest and
*ilderness areas. #iological diersity acts an important measure in any ecosystem that
increases its a!ility to *ithstand stress, i.e impending climatic change.
Thus there is urgent need to consere gene pool in situ !efore it is lost foreer, !ecause a
large percentage of !iological *ealth and its importance is still unkno*n to us.
Therefore there is urgent need to prepare a !iodiersity atlas of Madhya Pradesh, *hich *ill
!e aaila!le online on *e! page for access to eery person concerned *ith #iodiersity and

G,S is a system of hard*are, soft*are and procedures to facilitate the management,
manipulation, analysis, modelling, representation and display of georeferenced data to sole
comple% pro!lems regarding planning and management of resources. The capacity to store,
retriee, analyse, model and map large areas *ith huge olumes of spatial data has led to an
e%traordinary proliferation of its applications.
Geographic information systems are no* used for land use planning, utilities management,
ecosystems modelling, landscape assessment and planning, transportation and infrastructure
planning, market analysis, isual impact analysis, facilities management, ta% assessment,
real estate analysis and many other applicationsHfields.

Madhya Pradesh consists of a plateau with a mean elevation of 1600 ft above sea level,
interspersed with the mountains of the Vindhya and the Satpura ranges except for the
valleys of the armada and the !apti" !he main river systems are the #hambal, $etwa,
Sindh, armada, !apti, Mahanadi and %ndravati" early a one&third of the state's area is
covered with tropical forests ranging between the rivers #hambal in the north and
(odavari in the south" !o the east of #hambal, the area has roc)y surface and thic) forest"
*arther north, the topography of the plains stretches up to the ravines of #hambal"
!he highlands of Malwa present an appearance of waving fields of grain and the green
luxuriance among the shades of mango and tamarind trees clustering round the rural
habitations" !he inhabitants of this plateau are mostly agriculturists" !he low lying area in
the north of Malwa which touches the tract around (walior has a different appeal" %ts
north&east side gradually extends to $undel)hand and meets the +aimur ,ills in
$aghel)hand" ,ere the people are more sturdy and of lesser height as compared to the
peasants of Malwa" !he hilly regions fall mainly on the Vindhya and Satpura ranges where

The terrain of the resere is characteri)ed !y e%tensie plateaus and gorges. The resere *hich
has !ench topography can !roadly !e diided into three distinct ta!lelands on Panna side, the
upper Talagaon PlateauK the middle &inauta Plateau and the +en alley. Series of undulating
hills and plateaus rise on the other side of +en "ier in Chhatarpur district.
The +en is main rier *hich flo*s through the park from south to north. ,t is home for
Gharial and Maggar and other a9uatic fauna. ,t is the si%teen perennial rier of MP and is
truly the lifeline of park. +en offers some of the most spectacular scenery to the isitor *hile
it meanders for some 77 km. through the resere.

Madhya Pradesh has a su!tropical climate. Jike most of north ,ndia, it has a hot dry
summer0-prilLGune2 follo*ed !y monsoon rains 0GulyLSeptem!er2 and a cool and relatiely
dry *inter. The aerage rainfall is a!out 4,3@C mm 073.; in2. ,t decreases from east to *est.
The south'eastern districts hae the heaiest rainfall, some places receiing as much as
5,47C mm 0<B.A in2, *hile the *estern and north'*estern districts receie 4,CCC mm

,n the early 54st century, official statistics indicated that nearly one'third of the stateFs total
area *as forested, !ut satellite imagery reealed the proportion to !e closer to one'fifth. -n
een smaller percentage of Madhya Pradesh consists of permanent pasture or other gra)ing
land. The main forested areas include the .indhya "ange, the +aimur &ills, the Satpura and
Maikala ranges, and the#aghelkhand Plateau. -mong the stateFs most nota!le trees
are teak and sal 0Shorea robusta2, !oth of *hich are alua!le hard*oodsK !am!ooK salai
0$oswellia serrata2, *hich yields a resin used for incense and medicineK and tendu, the

The forests a!ound in large mammals, such as tigers, panthers, !ears, gaurs 0*ild cattle2, and
many types of deer, including chital 0spotted deer2, sam!ar, !lack!ucks, and the
rare !arasingha 0s*amp deer2. The *oodlands also are home to many species of !irds.
Madhya Pradesh has a num!er of national parks and many *ildlife sanctuaries, of *hich the
!est kno*n are +anha 8ational Park, in the southeastern part of the state, for the !arasinghaK
#andhagarh 8ational Park, in the east, for the endangered *hite tigerK and Shipuri
0Madha2 8ational Park, in the north, *here there is a !ird sanctuary. The +anha 8ational
Park has a sanctuary for tigers, and the 8ational Cham!al Sanctuary 0administered jointly
*ith "ajasthan and ?ttar Pradesh2, in the north*est, has !een esta!lished for the

The #iodiersity -tlas is interactie and easy to use. (nce the application is loadedHrun it
displays the Map of Madhya Pradesh. The names of districts are displayed on the map in
corresponding district polygons. The information a!out the polygon under mouse is
displayed in status'!ar at the !ottom left corner of the main *indo*. The user can interact
in arious *ays *ith the soft*are. The main purpose of this soft*are is to ie* the
information in the form of ta!les and maps.

ii. $nter pass*ord and press ok.
iii. - popup *indo* *ill appear sho*ing the names of categories e%isting in the

i. The names of items of the selected category *ill also appear in this *indo*.

To delete the item select the item name !y clicking the item name on the right hand list and
press delete !utton.
To add the ne* item select the category from the list on left side and type the name on ne*

To delete the category just click on the category name on the list and press delete
