About Maria Luisa Pflucker
Peruvian artist Maria Luisa Pflucker describes her process as one that allows her to slide imperceptibly
between the real and the unreal, the figurative and the abstract. The result is a series of startling and
stylized compositions that combine elements of classical portraiture with areas of pure color and
geometric abstraction. These oil paintings feature the face of one or more female figures, an occasional
fragment of nature like the sun or a bird, and prisms of light, patterns of bold colors, and fields of
ornamental forms and lines. At once decidedly Modern and unmistakably informed by art history, most
notably Symbolism, these hybrid canvases delimit a trademark style that is unmistakably Pflucker's own.
Her predilection for faces has been honed since childhood, when the self-taught artist followed her
father's interest and example. Now her mysterious, seductive figures evoke a contemporary take on
Klimt, their glowing visages set amidst striking, swirling tones. The resulting images are arresting, their
figurative and abstract elements woven together in spectacular and harmonious works that are practically
bewitching.
About Milagros Bentn
Milagros Bentn probes the question of identity in her fantasy-like work, melding strong graphic tropes,
naturalistic portraiture, and childlike stick figures to create an entirely unreal yet utterly absorbing
universe. Bentn works with a versatile but strongly-defined palette, and slips easily between machine-
like repetition and beautifully nuanced figure studies, often on the same canvas. Her work abandons
perspective and scale in favor of emotional, symbolic composition. In one, a womans face may be
depicted only as an outline, snaked through with the background pattern of blue splotches and
latticework. In another, stick figures might climb a giant tic-tac-toe grid, shifting Xs and Os as they go. In
such images Bentn captures a narrative and a mood of wonder that suggests that the mysteries of the
world run deep. Her work revolves around people, but always as they are connected to their surroundings
emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.
