Light and Other Objects

OVERVIEW:

OBJECTIVES:

MATERIALS:
WORKSHEETS:
This is the second lesson in a series on light. In this lesson the student will learn the differences between
transparent, translucent and opaque. They should be able to identify that the prefix trans- means you can see
through. They will be able to identify examples for each. Furthermore, students will learn to identify what colors are
absorbed into an object and which ones are reflected or transmitted.
1) TLW be able to indentify if objects are transparent, translucent, or opaque.
This is not a required benchmark but it does relate to ha ving to know what colors are in the visible spectrum.
IV 4.2.3: Use prisms and filters with light sources to produce various colors of light.
2) TLW be able to write about how light relates to different types of materials.
(PMEJ IV.1.3: Useprisms and filters with light sources toproduce various colors of light.

Teacher Action Teacher talk Ex:Qected Res:Qonses
Purpose:

We have already studied what a visible
spectrum is and wavelength. We are now
going to study what happens when light
hits an object. This is important to know
because you interact with light every day.
Also, the words we are going to learn are
used to describe objects in everyday life.

Anticipatory Set:
Look at page B90 and see how many
questions you can answer. Make sure
everyone in your group knows the answers.

Students talk in groups about graphic
organizer questions.
Input:

Pick a student to read. Turn to page B98. please read

Ask questions and point out pictures in
relationship to paragraphs as they are
read.

Hold up the materials as they are
discussed.

We just got done reading about being able
to see through an object or not and how
colors are absorbed or reflected.

There are three words that all have the
same prefix. An example of a prefix is re-;
redo, remake, retake. Re- means to do
something again. Add it to make means
you make something.

In a group figure out the prefix used in
several words.

The prefix trans- means "across,'' "beyond,''
or "through." Why do you think
transparent, translucent, and transmit all
contain the prefix trans-, but opaque does
not. Discuss this in your group, why do
some words have the prefix trans- and
others don't.

Modeling
Earlier, we looked at three types of
materials. Let's decide which material was
transparent, translucent, and opaque.
Which material was transparent?
Why?

Which material was translucent?
Why?
Students follow along with finger as one
student is reading.

In groups come to the decision that trans-
is the prefix.

Clear plastic
You can see through it.

Tissue paper
You can kind of see through it..

Which material was opaque? Construction paper
Why? You can't see through it.

Give worksheet to paper passers

Write in the answers on an overhead and
number them 1-4.

Guided Practice

I have a worksheet for you to do.
Paper passers please pass it out.

I am going to hold up five objects you need
to decide if it is transparent , translucent or
opaque. Write down what you THINK in
the middle column.
Object 1: Paper towel
Object 2: Plastic holder
Object3: Cup
Object 4: Window

Now in the far column you need to fill in
the answers as I write them on the board
you.

So now we know that transparent means:

So now we know that translucent means:

So now we know that opaque means:

Opaque
Translucent
Translucent
Transparent

Listen and write correct answers without
erasmg.

Allows light topass through so that
whatever is behind can be seen

Allows light to pass through but scatters it
so that whatever is behind it cannot be
clearly seen.

Does not allow light to pass through

Input

Remember absorb means to take in. For
example a sponge absorbs water.

Reflect means to bounce back. Kind of like
when you bounce a ball on a wall it reflects
back to you.

Also, transmit means something is allowed
to pass through. For example when we say
they transmitted information from outer
space to earth.
Transmit happens through glass, clear
plastic, or air. While reflect is for solid
objects that cannot be seen through.
Guided Practice

So look at this construction paper. What
color is reflected?

Why did I say reflect and not transmit?

What colors are absorbed on this folder?

Remember, think about the definition of a
word and you can figure out how to apply
it to an object.

Independent Practice:

For homework you need to take out your
packet of questions. We are working on
Different Materials and Light B98-99. You
have four questions to answer in complete
sentences.

I will tell you right now we did not discuss
all the answers in class. You may need to

The color the see

You can't see through the paper so it can't
be transmit.

All the colors but blue.

re read or THINK to answer some of these
questions. Don't forget to write in
complete sentences.

Closure:

Remember, light is all around you. You
interact with it daily. The terms/words for
this section are also words that are used by
adults a lot. Just like the examples I gave
you. So you need to know what they mean
and be able to give examples. (I think
these words will be on your lesson 2 test!!)
