The Singers: Concert Reflection

Megan Kolling

So Ill Sing With My Voice: Dominick Argento
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing The Singers perform this piece. Last year in
Chapel Choir we sang this song so I was really excited to hear a professional choir
sing it. The first thing that blew me away about this song was the fact that there are
only about 40 voices in The Singers and they sang the opening of this song sounding
like a choir of 100 like the Chapel Choir. They also executed the key change
beautifully and effortlessly. I remember that part of the song being something we
struggled with and The Singers executed it brilliantly.

Serenade to Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams
When I looked through the program before the concert started I was excited
to hear this piece since we sang the Hodie by Vaughan Williams for the Christmas
concert. Compared to the Hodie this piece is mellow and relaxing. In this piece the
first solo is a soprano solo and I was blown away by this womans voice. Her voice is
one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. This song put me into a
meditative trans. Then again at the end of this piece the same woman sang the
ending solo, which was a perfect way to conclude the song. This piece showed off all
of the lovely solo voices the choir has. I am surprised at how well blended this choir
is with all of these solo voices. When the whole choir sang you could not pick out
any individual voices, they have a perfectly beautiful blend.

Shenandoah
After the concert ended the crowd was on their feet because of the
astounding music making. The whole concert was incredible. The Singers came back
on stage and did an encore of Shenandoah. The song shows off both the woman and
men sections separately. The song starts off with a beautiful flowing line by the
women. These singers have wonderful control of their voices because the sound is
clear with minimum vibrato. The same went with the men section. When the men
and women came together for the first time it gave me goose bumps. The balance
between the melodic line and the chords underneath was spot on perfect. Towards
the end of the piece there is a round imitative part in the womens voices. This
sounds like echoing and all the sections matched beautifully. Overall The Singers
have a beautiful rich and clear sound. One of the best choirs I have heard live!
