WHAT IS THE JOBSHOP?
The JobShop advertises part-time, vacation, graduate, internships, placements and
postgraduate opportunities. The JobShop database is updated daily so please check back
regularly for the latest positions. To register for the Job Shop you can either call into the
Careers Service and complete a registration form or register online.

HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK CAN I WORK?
International Students Tier 4 Visa:
Before you start work you should ensure that your conditions of stay in the UK (as stated
in your passport) allow you to take up employment.
Most overseas students are entitled to work up to 20 hours a week during semester time
with no restrictions during vacations.
However we suggest that you work no more than 15 hours a week during semester time,
otherwise this may have an adverse effect on your studies.
International Students Student Visitor Visa:
Student Visitor Visa: please note that if you hold a student visitor visa you are not
entitled to participate in paid or voluntary work.
Bulgarian / Romanian Students:
Bulgarian/Romanian students require a BR1 (yellow card) before they apply for a National
Insurance Card. Feedback suggests that students must apply for their BR1 as soon as
they arrive in the UK in anticipation that it will take a long time for the Yellow
Registration to be authorised (up to 9 months).

WHY DO I NEED A NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER?
In order to be employed in the UK you will need a National Insurance number so that the
Contributions Agency can keep a record of how much National Insurance you have paid.

HOW DO I OBTAIN A NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER?
To obtain a National Insurance Number telephone the National Contact Centre line on
0845 6000 643. They will arrange an appointment for you with the Dundee Job Centre
Office and tell you what documentation you need to take with you.

HOW MUCH WILL I BE PAID?
You are entitled to the National Minimum Wage. As of October 2012 this is:
6.08 an hour for workers aged 21 and over (6.19 from October 2012)
4.98 an hour for workers aged 18 to 20 (4.98 from October 2012)
3.68 an hour for workers aged 16 to 17 (3.68 from October 2012)
If you are being paid less than this, please let us know.

WILL I HAVE TO PAY INCOME TAX?
It is very unlikely that you will have to pay income tax as you need to earn above 8,100
per year.
