Mark Quintana, Joy Veasy and Alexandra Martin
Broward County and Fundatia Dori Slosberg Romania
Dear Selection Panel:
The students and teachers of Colegiul National Mihail Sadoveanu (CNMS) would be honored
and thrilled to participate in the exchange with Broward County and the Dori Slosberg
Foundation. This will be an important learning experience about safe roads as well as an excellent
cross-cultural exchange.
CNMS is an elite middle and high school, ranked in the top five schools in Iasi County, the
second largest county in Romania (after Bucharest). We are located in Pascani, a small city with
about 40,000 residents as of the last census. CNMS currently has 1,128 students and 76 teachers,
including 8 who have received doctorates.
The long history of CNMS goes back to its founding in 1932, when it was known as the CFR Boys
Theoretical School. During World War II, the students were forced to evacuate and the building
was used as military barracks. Today the school boasts Green Flag status from ECO Scoala, a
Romanian environmental NGO, and participates in numerous other volunteering efforts and
extracurricular activities with its students, such as the IASIMUN Model United Nations, hosting a
Peace Corps Volunteers as an EFL teacher for the fourth year in a row, and IMPACT.
The school and staff of CNMS have extensive experience in e-twinning and video conferencing.
We have a dedicated multi-media lab with a permanently installed projector and computer. In
addition, the current Peace Corps Volunteer, Theron LaBounty, worked as a software engineer
for Microsoft before joining the Peace Corps and will be involved in the implementation of this
project.
We are extremely excited at the opportunity to work on this project. It will be key in helping our
students learn about what is important to youth from another part of the world. In addition, our
students will greatly benefit from practicing their English in a natural and informal setting. Most
importantly, road safety is a crucial issue the world over. Starting education and discussion at the
high school level is critical to creating a safe environment for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
Our greatest hope for this exchange is for students and their families, both in Pascani and in
Broward County, to understand road and driving hazards and therefore how to ensure their own
safety.
We thank you for your consideration and look forward to hearing your decision.
Sincerely,

Mihaela Vatavu, EFL Teacher
Theron LaBounty, EFL Teacher, Peace Corps Volunteer
