notndose un ligero incremento en
parques e islas de algunas avenidas,
en las cuales stas adquieren un par-
ticular papel protagnico. El cultivo de
palmas se encontr asociado al nivel
de desarrollo paisajstico: donde el ur-
banismo y el paisajismo tienen su
mayor desarrollo, se utiliza una ma-
yor cantidad y variedad de palmas. La
parroquia Chiquinquir present la
mayor riqueza especfica, con 22 ele-
mentos, seguida por las parroquias
Olegario Villalobos con 17, Juana de
vila y Coquivacoa con 9 y 10 cada una
respectivamente. Se observo una ma-
yor tendencia al cultivo de palmas en
las parroquias ubicadas al este del
municipio Maracaibo.
Las especies de mayor frecuen-
cia en el censo fueron la Cocos nucifera
L. (Cocotero), Roystonea regia (Kunth)
O.F. Cook (Chaguaramo Enano),
Dypsis lutescens (H. Wendl.) Beentje
& J. Dransf. (Palma Areca) y
Pritchardia pacifica Seem. & H.Wendl.
(Palma Abanico) (cuadro 1). La espe-
cie ms sembrada, C. nucifera, fue
detectada en todas las parroquias es-
tudiadas, resultando ser la de mayor
distribucin, seguida de V. merilli (Pal-
ma de manila) con una notable con-
centracin de individuos en casi todos
los sitios en donde se le observ. Lla-
(Jacq.) O.F. Cook (Chaguaramo) y el
Attalea butyracea (Mutis ex L.f.)
Wess.Boer (Corozo) (Hoyos y Braun,
2001).
is used a higher quantity and variety
of palms. Chiquinquir parish
presented a higher specific richness
with 22 elements, followed by parishes
Olegario Villalobos with 17, Juana de
vila and Coquivacoa with 9 and 10
respectively. It was observed a higher
trend of the palm crop in parishes
located at the east of Maracaibo
parish.
The species of higher frequency
in the census were Cocos nucifera L.
(Cocotero), Roystonea regia (Kunth)
O.F. Cook (Chaguaramo Enano),
Dypsis lutescens (H. Wendl.) Beentje
& J. Dransf. (Palma Areca) and
Pritchardia pacifica Seem. & H.Wendl.
(Palma Abanico) (Table 1). The most
sowed specie, C. nucifera, was detected
in all the studied parishes, resulting
to be the one of higher distribution
followed by V. mreilli (Palma de
manila), with a marked concentration
of individuals in almost all the areas
where it was observed. It is curios the
fact that most of the sowed species are
foreigner, mainly from the Pacific,
India and Malaysia. The only
autochthonous species of Venezuela
registered in the research were
Roystonea oleracea (Jacq.) O.F. Cook
(Chaguaramo) and Attalea butyracea
(Mutis ex L.f.) Wess.Boer (Corozo) (Ho-
yos and Braun, 2001).
The most frequent growth way on
the inventory plants was the non-
ramified arboreal (without peduncle)
and in a lower number were followed
the shapes: arborescente multicaule and
arbustiva multicaule (one individual).
It was observed in general that the
identified individuals grow optimally in
hot tropical weather or presented a
marked adaptation to the predominant

La forma de crecimiento ms fre-
cuente en las palmas inventariadas fue
la arbrea no ramificada (estipitada) y
en menor nmero, le siguieron las for-
mas: arborescente multicaule y
arbustiva multicaule (un individuo). Se
observ en general, que los individuos
identificados crecen de manera ptima
en climas tropicales clidos o presen-
tan notable adaptacin al clima predo-
minante en Maracaibo. De acuerdo a
la clasificacin de palmas por ambien-
tes de Braun (1988) se encontr una
mayor proporcin de especies adapta-
das a ambientes de alta luminosidad,
seguidas por las de menor intensidad
solar; slo se conocen dos elementos
cuyo desarrollo ptimo ocurri bajo
sombra.

Conclusiones y
recomendaciones
Las 24 especies reportadas en el
presente estudio constituyen un peque-
o porcentaje de la flora urbana de
Maracaibo, de las cuales slo R.
oleracea y A. butyracea son autctonas
de Venezuela. Se recomienda continuar
estudios florsticos de las especies de
palmas presentes en las diferentes pa-
rroquias del municipio Maracaibo.
El cultivo de palmas en

Conclusions and
recommendations
The 24 species reported in the
current research constitute a little
percentage of the urban flora in
Maracaibo, out of which just R.
oleracea and A. butyracea are
autochthonous of Venezuela. It is
recommended to continue researching
about floristic species of palms
presented in the different parishes of
Maracaibo.
The crop of palms in Maracaibo
is associated to the ornamental use
that these plants have fie to the
beautiful inflorescences and fruits, as
well as their green foliage that
contribute to the aesthetic and
landscaping development of the city.
The crop of some palms in
Maracaibo is restricted in specific
environment, highlighting a slight
increment in parks, squares,
pavements divisor pavements in some
avenues. It is recommended for the
arboreal day of the city the use of a
higher number of autochthonous
palms that with the time result
ecologically sustainable.

ques, plazas, acerase e islas divisorias
de algunas avenidas. Se recomienda
para las jornadas de arborizacin de la
ciudad el uso de un mayor nmero de
palmas autctonas que a largo plazo
resulta ecolgicamente sustentable.
Especies como Copernicia
tectorum (Kunth) Mart. (Palma
llanera), Mauritia flexuosa L. f.
(Moriche), Sabal mauritiiformis (H.
Karst.) Griseb. & H. Wendl. (Carata)
y Attalea maripa (Aubl.) Mart.
(Maripa) son altamente recomendables
para la ornamentacin de la ciudad de
Maracaibo debido a que toleran las con-
diciones climticas caractersticas de
la regin.
