Sisu Award honors service
F
inn Fest isnt just for Finns.
Trough Finn Fest, we want to honor Fredericks Finnish
heritage, as we are proud of the determined pioneers who
came from a land of trees and found a way to make their prairie
their home. But we also recognize that many people who were
just as instrumental in building our community came from many
other places. We want to recognize the spirit of community-
building, no mater the nationalityespecially as it continues
today.
Tis is the second year we are giving the Sisu Award. Te
award honors two people who have served the Frederick
community with determination and perseverance, living up to
the best meaning of sisu. Tese people generally dont tout their
own accomplishments, so their work ofen goes uncelebrated.
Tis award is one small way we can say thank you for all the
quiet work that goes into making a community a great place to
live.
Congratulations to our 2014 Sisu Award
recipients, Jim and Kay Dumire!

rederick is named afer a Finn-
ish man, Kustaa Frederick
Bergstadius, who was a clerk
and emigrant agent for the Chicago-
Milwaukee-St. Paul Railway Com-
pany. Some records say that he never
actually visited the area, but he was
satisfed enough with the report of a
friend, Erick Pikkarainen, that he en-
couraged others to move there.
Finnish immigrants were among
the areas frst setlers; many of
them homesteaded northeast of
Frederick in the area of Savo, which
was named afer Bergstadius home
province in Finland.
In recent years, when members
of Frederick Forward, a community
development group that started
with the help of the Horizons
program of the Northeast Area
Foundation, discussed having an
annual festival in the town, they
decided that the festival should
celebrate the towns Finnish
heritage. Te frst Finn Fest was
held in 2008.
Finn Fest honors Fredericks Finnish heritage
The caption on this publicity map reads: Was founded in the spring of 1882 and is the finest town site in Dakota, and,
during the first year of its existence, rapidly developed in size and prominence, now numbering about 700 population
and many solid business enterprises. Among its many improvements it has every facility for commercial business in the
way of railroads, telegraph, banking, express, mail, etc., is situated on the Maple River and on the H. & D. Division of the C.,
M. & St. P. R. R., and soon to be connect with the Northwestern by the O., F. & B. R. R. from Ordway to Bismarck, which is
to be completed to Frederick at an early day. Frederick is in the center of the best agricultural part of the Jim River Valley,
with pure water, fine churches and schools, excellent society, and destined to become a prosperous commercial city. For

efing wives and tossing boots may not
be Olympic sports, but that doesnt
mean Finns dont take them seriously!
(Well, OK, there sometimes might be a smile
peeking around a competitors game face.)
Tese sports have large tournaments in Fin-
land that atract international participants.
Te wife-carrying competition, or
eukonkanto, which tests both a couples
physical condition and sense of humor, has
its roots in the stories of a robber who would
steal girls from neighboring villages. In the
contest, men can carry their wives however
they like, but they must take care not to drop
them, or they will have seconds added to
their time! Te fastest wife-carrying couple
receives the equivalent of the wifes weight
in beer.
In the boot toss, or saappaanheito,
contestants try to throw their boots as far
as they can. Tey can grip the boot however
they like, but the leg of the boot must be
straight while it is in the air. Well have
some ofcial rubber boots on hand for the
contest! Nearly all ages can participate.
And if youve ever had the urge to chuck
your cell phone, join us for knnyknheito.
You can also try the Finnish version of
Dance Dance Revolution.
Its tikkuristi, a dance done
over two crossed sticks. Te
music gets faster, and the
goal is keeping the dancing
going without touching
the sticks. Last one still
dancing wins!
Two Finnish stick-
throwing games were a hit
at last years Finn Fest. Kubb
and mlkky are both great
strategy games for all ages.
Te action all starts at
noon Saturday.

Surname stories: Land of the nens
By Carina Chela and Fran Weaver
Reprinted with permission fom fnland.f
T
he most common Finnish-language sur-
names include Korhonen, Virtanen, Ni-
eminen, Mkinen, Hmlinen, Koskinen,
Heikkinen and Jrvinen. Yes, this land loves its
nen sufx, a sure way to recognize a Finnish
surname.
More than a third of all Finns have surnames
ending in nen. Tough the Finnish sufx nen
is normally a diminutive, in surnames it more
ofen signifes belonging to a place where a fam-
ily lived. Virtanen could literally mean small
stream, but the surname was devised to mean
a family living near a stream. Mkinen, literally
small hill, meant the family from the hill.
Many families chose this kind of surname
made of a natural feature with the sufx nen in
the Finnish national romantic period of the 19th
century, explains Sirkka Paikkala, who studies
Finnish surnames at the Research Institute for
Languages of Finland. Te nen sufx was
originally from Finlands Eastern surname tradi-
tion, but in the 1800s such surnames were also
adopted in the West and thats why they are now
so widespread.
Te rivals: Virtanen and Korhonen
Tere has recently been extremely tight com-
petition for top ranking between the two most
common Finnish surnames, Virtanen and Ko-
rhonen (the equivalents to Smith and Jones).
Te Korhonens now seem to be taking a lead,
by either breeding faster or living longer. In April
2011 the Finnish Population Register Centre an-
nounced that there are 23,561 Korhonens, com-
pared to 23,458 Virtanens.
In third place we fnd Nieminen with 21,358,
and quickly catching up are the Mkinens in
fourth place with 21,327. Te obscure origins
of the top surname Korhonen may be related to
deafness or a word meaning old man.
Te non-nen surnames
But its not all about the nens. Many west-
ern Finnish surnames end in the sufx la or
l, which indicated association with a place
(for example Mkel is connected to a hill) or
a farmstead (Juhani Matila indicates Juhani
from Matis farm). Some surnames also relate
to a profession, likeSeppl for someone from a
smithy, Paikkala adds.
Many surnames refect the Finns close rela-
tionship to nature. Examples include Kanerva
(heather), Nummi (moor), Kivi (stone), Niemi
(peninsula) and Halla (frost). In one Helsinki
suburb a Mr Susi (wolf) lives next door to the
Sikanen family, whose name can be understood
as meaning litle pigs.
Past and present trends
Paikkalas book Se tavallinen Virtanen (which
translates roughly to Te Average Smith) is an
extensive study of Finnish surnames in the pe-
riod 18501921 when many families frst of-
cially adopted hereditary surnames. During the
early 20th century many Finns translated their
former Swedish-language names into Finn-
ish. Writer Alexis Stenvall changed his name
to Aleksis Kivi, and the renowned painter Axel
Waldemar Galln became Akseli Gallen-Kallela.
Some surnames with obscure origins have
strange meanings in modern Finnish, includ-
ing Kiimamaa (land in heat), Patja (matress),
Makkara (sausage), Kaalip (cabbage head),
Romu (junk), and Hikip (sweaty head).
According to Paikkala, a new trend for new-
liweds started in the 1990s. Couples planning
marriage look for a totally new surname to indi-
cate the beginning of a new life.
However, about 80 percent of Finnish wom-
en still assume their husbands surname or com-
bine their maiden name and their husbands
name. Combining Finnish surnames in this way
opens up amusing possibilities. If Mr Orava
(squirrel) marries Miss Pulska (fat), she might
become Pulska-Orava (fat squirrel). And when
Mr Karhu (bear) marries Miss Nlkinen (hun-
gry), they could be the Nlkinen-Karhu family,

Art project celebrates sisu
T
wo words in Finnish have been adopted into the English lan-
guage. Most people know the frst one, sauna, but many dont
know the second one: sisu.
Sisu is defned in various ways. An easy way to understand it: Its
the force that makes you keep going, even when its hard and other
people may have already quit. Grit is perhaps the closest word in
English.
Tis year, all atendees at Finn Fest are invited to participate in
an art project that celebrates the idea of sisu. Its a version of the art
project that is depicted in the Yoopera! documentary that will be
shown on Sunday at Savo Hall.
For our project, we invite you to think of an answer to this
question: Who in your family (either past or present) shows sisu
in how they live (or lived), and how do they do so? Note that a
person does NOT have to be Finnish to show sisu!
Heres how the art project will work:
Either write up to 75 words about how that person (or those
persons) showed sisu in their lives, or bring a photo (please
identify whos in it), or draw a picture, or any of the above.
You can also do this ahead of time, and e-mail your story
artwork, and/or photo to news@fredericksd.com. OR you
can just visit the art project table on Friday at the school.
Te story and/or artwork/photo will be transferred onto a
piece of fabric and displayed as they are fnished. Te fnal
artwork will be on display on Sunday at Savo Hall.
Please join us in celebrating the sisu in our families and
communities!

songs about the beauty of a spring.
Please join us in singing this beautiful melody afer the bonfre is

lahde on Google and youll fnd several videos.
O beautiful spring, I stand near
the water and gaze at you,
as the shadows of the clouds play
across the water.
Over there is a fne cloud,
so wonderful and so fair.
But now it has already gone.
Farewell, lovely bit of shade.
As I gaze on these things, I think
about my own soul.
So many a sweet and gentle cloud
