Presentation : Petroleum
and Solar Energy

Solar Energy: Renewable
Energy Source
Solar power energy-
Power obtained by harnessing the
suns rays

Petroleum-
a dark-coloured thick flammable oil occurring in
the earth, it can be separated into fractions
including natural gas, gasoline, naphtha,
kerosene, fuel, lubricating oils, paraffin wax, and
asphalt.
Petroleum: Non-renewable

Solar Power:
Pros:
It is renewable
Abundant
Sustainable
Environmentally friendly
Good availability
Reduces energy cost
many uses
Tax Credit because it is
Environmentally friendly
Cons:
Expensive
Limited
Nitrogen trifluoride and sulfur
hexafluoride has been traced
back to the production of solar
panels.
Exotic materials
Not Consistent

Petroleum:
Pros:
Well developed
Cheap and reliable
very powerful
can be accessed at anytime
many jobs involved in the oil
industry
Cons:
Non-renewable
Releases carbon
unsustainable
danger to the environment
It is getting more expensive
History of Solar Power
Radiant energy either(light or heat) comes from the sun.

Solar power systems are operational for 15-20 years.

Has been used since the 7th century B.C.

Used for heat, cooking, light and to light fires.
History of Petroleum
Petroleum in the past has been used for mortar, coating walls and
boat hulls, and as a fire weapon in defensive warfare.

Pioneers bought it from the Native Americans for medicinal use and
called it Seneca Oil and Genesee Oil.

The modern petroleum industry began in 1859

The american pioneer E.L. Drake drilled a producing well on Oil
Creek in Pennsylvania .
Past Use of
Solar Power:
Greeks used the sun as an
energy source
The Greeks would build their
houses so that the sunlight could
hit it
Used for a source of fire

Petroleum:
petroleum tanks provide fuel to
fighting forces
The Army relies on petroleum and
other fuels
Candles, wax, fuels.
Present Use of Solar Power
Solar Power is sometimes used
to pump water in remote areas
In the diagram to the right it
shows that renewable resource
is only 12% and less than 1% is
from Solar Power
Solar Power is currently used by
some home owners as a power
supply
Solar Power is also used to
charge electric cars

Present Use of Petroleum
10.6 million barrels a day were imported to the U.S from other countries in
2012
The U.S. Consumed about 6.87 billion barrels of oil in 2011
18.83 million barrels a day!
Petroleum is used for almost everything like transportation fuels and waxes

Future of -
Solar Power:
Each state has a standard or a
goal that has to be met so that
they can increase used energy
from renewable resources

Petroleum:
Researchers say there is enough
oil for about 25 years
Researchers say that there is
uncertainty in the futures supply
and demand of oil
