TEMPORARY MAGISTRATE

DISTRICT COURT

REPUBLIC OF NAURU


The Government of the Republic of Nauru is seeking
expressions of interest from qualified persons for the position
of Temporary Magistrate in the Judicial Department for a
period of 6 months.

The Magistrate will preside over the criminal trials of asylum
seekers charged with misdemeanor offences arising out of the
19 July 2013 incident on Nauru. He or she will also preside over
the committal hearings for those charged with indictable
offences arising out of the same incident.

Appointing a temporary Magistrate and establishing a second
branch of the District Court will assist with the increased
workload on Naurus judicial system arising out of these trials.

Key responsibilities:
To serve as Temporary Magistrate of the District Court,
To collaborate with the Resident Magistrate and Registrar of
the Supreme Court to ensure that the temporary court
functions efficiently;
To preside over criminal cases arising out of the 19 July 2013
incident at the Regional Processing Centre
To carry out such other functions and duties as may be
directed by the Resident Magistrate.

Required Qualification, Skills & Experience:
A Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognised
Commonwealth university.
At least 8 years admission to practice as a legal practitioner
in a common law jurisdiction.

Previous experience as a magistrate is desirable.
Demonstrated experience as a criminal advocate, prosecutor
or barrister;
Professional experience in a Pacific island community or
similar jurisdiction is desirable;
Experience with working in a cross-cultural environment and
through interpreters is desirable;

Personal Attributes:
High standard of integrity and probity in both professional
and personal life.
Highly developed legal reasoning skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
A mature, sober professional with highly developed
interpersonal skills.
Must be highly motivated and have the ability to work with
minimal or no supervision.
Must have ability to work with minimal legal or
administrative support, to use IT and type own judgments.
Thorough understanding of and commitment to the
Bangalore principles of judicial conduct. And the
Commonwealth (Latimer House) principles.
Willingness to work, live and adapt to the constraints of a
small island environment.
Respect and tolerance of cultural diversity.

EOIs are invited from suitably qualified interested candidates
for the position of Temporary Magistrate of the Court of
Nauru.
