Scholars Challenge #4(A)- Taxi Cabs

In this problem, we have to find the base fee and the increasing cost of the taxi
ride. Instead of calling it the fare, its called the ROC (Rate Of Change). It shows the
change in a problem by how much it increases or decreases. The one thing that i know
in this problem is that 4- miles in the taxi ride cost $8.80, and a 8- mile ride cost $15.20.

1. The first step that I did was to put the two values together into a table.

X Y
4 $ 8.80
8 $15.20

2. My second step was that the two values in the table were not constant (meaning that
the number has to be going up or down by the same amount).

X Y
4 $ 8.80
8 $15.20

3. My third step was to subtract the two y values $15.20, and $ 8.80, and I got $6.40. I
did this because i wanted to find how much the two amounts were increasing by.

15.20
- 8.80
6.40 < This not the full ROC. I still have to do
one more thing to get it.

4. My next step is to divide $ 6.40 by 4. And I got $ 1.60. I divided by 4 because thats
how much the x value was increasing by with each mile.

6.40/4 = 1.60 < The ROC

5. Now that Ive found the ROC I can start making the table to see how much each mile
cost.

X (mile)

Y (cost)
0 $ 2.40
1 $ 4.00
2 $ 5.60
3 $ 7.20
4 $ 8.80
5 $ 10.40
6 $ 12.00
7 $ 13.60
8 $ 15.20
9 $ 16.80
10 $ 18.40
11 $ 20.00
12 $ 21.60
13 $ 23.20
14 $ 24.80
15 $ 26.40

Observations:
The base fee is what you see highlighted in blue. It is also called the y-intercept
when the x- value equals 0. I know it the base fee because the person in the taxi
cab did not travel any miles.

The relationship between the x, and y value would be a linear function because
the ROC is constant.

The equation is y= 1.60x + 2.40

Solutions:

1. How much will a 6 mile ride cost ?

- A 6 mile ride will cost $ 12.00
4 $ 8.80
5 $ 10.40
6 $ 12.00

2. How much will a 15 mile ride cost?

- A 15 mile ride will cost $26.40

13 $ 23.20
14 $ 24.80
15 $ 26.40

3. What is the rate of change, and what does it mean in the context of this problem?

- The rate of change in this problem is $1.60. Everytime the x value goes up by one the
y value goes up by $ 1.60 (the amount of money goes up every time the mile of the taxi
ride increases).
