ASTROLOGY 101
Lesson 7

What is an Intercepted Sign?
The Zodiac signs are equally spaced around the horoscope, at 30 degrees each.
However, depending upon the House System used to calculate the chart, some houses
are narrow and some are wide. If the location of your birth is close to the equator, the
houses will be close to 30 degrees each, and relatively equal in size. However, the
further you go towards the North or South Pole, the more extreme they'll be in size.
Occasionally with a big house, it's large enough to completely swallow up an entire
zodiac sign. Such a sign is called an Intercepted Sign.
An intercepted sign and any planets in that sign represent a kind of hidden or repressed
energy, since that energy doesn't have a direct path through a house cusp in order to
express itself. These intercepted influences can be hard to express, may develop later
in life (as part of your psychological growth process), or may be a "behind the scenes"
factor in your behavior. Needless to say, it's probably something you need to work on
throughout your life.
REMEMBER: Intercepted signs take on increased importance because they cover extra
territory, and affect more areas of your life. Intercepted houses show us some of the
ways we can get around the difficulties caused by our intercepted signs.
In Einsteins chart youll notice that the sign of Leo is intercepted in the 4
th
house and
the sign of Aries in intercepted in the 10
th
house. You can also see that he has 3
planets, two asteroids and the Part of Fortune in the intercepted sign of Aries.
2 | P a g e

PLANETS IN INTERCEPTED SIGNS:
SUN: Suggests the individual may have been under restraint in early life. There may be
some feeling of lack within the self and also some difficulty relating to others. There is
also necessity to find a special field or place in life where the individual can stand alone.
MOON: Emotional intensification that may cause problems with communication. This
includes the possibility of a speech impediment if other factors concur. Withdrawal is
common as are intensified feelings of rejection. If these hurdles can be overcome the
individual can communicate emotionally and be very effective where others will listen.
MERCURY: The thinking processes are not the same as others and the individual may
feel misunderstood or out of sync with peers. When the individual learns to accept
his/her own concepts, others may come to admire the gift for intellectual specialization.
3 | P a g e

VENUS: The individual seeks love in an entirely personal way that may be kept secret,
sacred and hidden from others OR the individual may never have experiences real love
because the ideal of love is too intense and limited.
MARS: The individual shows intense power and energy which needs to be channeled
towards a specialized goal. The individual has the ability to make whatever they do a
personal triumph.
JUPITER: Some difficulties in early life resulting in the bottling up of natural
enthusiasm. The sense of value is very unique and the individual is capable of taking
advantage of opportunities where others would miss out.
SATURN: Great sensitivity to the problems of others along with a knack for solving
them. Things that upset others rarely bother the individual. There is some inclination
towards fatalism regarding personal difficulties. The outer expression should be
developed so that proper risks are taken in order to achieve goals.
URANUS: A timidity of expression concerning originality due to over sensitivity and fear
of ridicule.
NEPTUNE: A desire to avoid leadership and take the back seat. Assertiveness must be
developed so the individual does not become too introspective and hermit-like. If
Neptune is angular in the chart (conjunct 1
st
, 4
th
, 7
th
, or 10
th
houses) there is a strong
need to reach out to others and possible writing or musical talent.
PLUTO: The life motivation is different than what spurs others. The need for action
comes from a group feeling as well as the individuals HUGE need for approval. There is
a deep need to investigate life thoroughly which should be encouraged.
What are Linked Houses?
Whenever there are intercepted signs in a chart, there will also be two sets of houses
that are linked together because they share the same sign on adjacent houses.
In Einsteins chart the 2
nd
and 3
rd
houses are linked and the 8
th
and 9
th
houses are
linked because they share the same sign on their cusps.
1
st
& 2
nd
: The individual must earn his/her own way in life, determine the personal
value structure and most likely place much store on material comforts.
2
nd
& 3
rd
: A living might be earned through the transportation or communication fields.
Values may be influenced by a sibling or there is a possibility of going into business with
a sibling.
4 | P a g e

3
rd
& 4
th
: A sibling may have taken a parents place or there might have been an
unsettled childhood with attendance at different schools. A sibling might share living
quarters at one point in life. Expression is easier when the native is on familiar ground.
4
th
& 5
th
: Great creativity around the homestead and possibly running a business from
home.
5
th
& 6
th
: Possibly working in a creative field that gives service to young people such as
teaching or coaching a team. Work is usually the individuals first love.
6
th
& 7
th
: The individual might work with a spouse, partner or simply like working with
the public. Work may involve the law.
7
th
& 8
th
: A favored condition for politics and garnering support from the public. Fruitful
business partnerships or inheritance through a partner.
8
th
& 9
th
: Possible career in writing or publishing tied to mystery or sex novels or career
connected to financial expertise, research or politics. There is often an affinity for the
mystical or occult which may be taught to others.
9
th
& 10
th
: Possible extensive travel connected to career matters, education, or the law.
Possibility of foreign born parents or parents that are helpful to career.
10
th
& 11
th
: Friends and social relationships aid career. Possible work in the
government. The individual is often active in group efforts usually in a leadership
capacity.
11
th
& 12
th
: The individual may be drawn to charity, social or welfare work. Comfort can
be found behind the scenes however, the individual needs to find quality time for the
Self. Sometimes outside forces may cause confinement.
12
th
& 1
st
: The individual has much inner strength that can be called upon when needed
however, the personality needs sharpening and defining due to shyness or introversion.
What are VOID houses?

Every chart has twelve houses and since there are only ten planets, every individual will
have at least two empty or VOID houses.

If a house is empty, it shows that there is less conscious concern in that area. You
pretty much accept conditions the way they are and anything experienced is not likely
to give you any more of a problem than you can handle. Still, such a house still has a
sign influencing it and the ruler of that sign is the planet to look to for particulars. Only
planets are considered when discerning VOID houses.

5 | P a g e

There is karmic implication connected to VOID houses. The belief is that either the
individual has already worked through the karma of the corresponding house or they
have chosen to work through the karma of the corresponding house in the next
lifetime.

In Einsteins chart (planets only) the 1
st
, 2
nd
, 4
th
, 6
th
, 8
th
, and 12
th
houses are VOID or
unoccupied.

VOID HOUSES:

1 An uncluttered personality true to the sign on the cusp (Ascendant). In harmony
with outer appearance and projection.

2 Money, possessions and values are not vital to the individual. Financial
circumstances are either completely assured or totally irrelevant.

3 No essential desire to communicate or travel on a daily or mundane level. Relatives
and siblings are easily accepted or not integrated into the individuals lifestyle.

4 Often prefers to be away from the home environment. Actual home setting is not
important. One of the parents probably the father did or does not play a significant role
in the individuals life.

5 No innate urge to procreate. Romantic, sporting and creative instincts either take a
back seat or are transmuted to other areas of life.

6 Definitely NOT a work-a-holic! Rarely worries unduly about health or work matters
and often possess a strong constitution.

7 Able to live life equally well in either a married or single state. The individual likes
independence and is not likely to hang on to outworn relationships.

8 Not dependent upon others emotions or financial resources for well being. Unlikely
to become involved in extremely intense, obsessive, or over emotional relationships.

9 Higher learning, expansive philosophies and extensive traveling are readily accepted
by the individual but he/she will not be driven to experience these things on a personal
level.

10 The individual does not strive to assert him/her self ambitiously or need to be
admired as a status symbol. Detachment and/or acceptance towards mother-figure.

11 Equally at ease when possessing many friends or none at all, but unlikely to
encourage close liaisons or become entrenched in group situations.
6 | P a g e

12 Lesser evolved Souls usually find planets posited here rather difficult to handle
VOIDS however, tend to add balance and strength on both a mental and physical plane.

The 2
nd
, 6
th
, and 10
th
houses should be studied in unison when interpreting work status.
All three houses unoccupied denotes total lack of interest in work, financial and status
oriented situations but does not denote lack of ability to earn.

If the 2
nd
is unoccupied but the 6
th
and 10
th
are occupied, the individual is ambitious
and mindful of working needs but unconcerned with any financial rewards connected to
work.

If the 10
th
is occupied and the 2
nd
and 6
th
empty, the individual is extremely ambitious
and assertive with an eye on the prize of status and financial success.

If only the 2
nd
house is occupied, financial security is a vital factor and the individual is
capable of working hard to satisfy strong monetary needs and security.

The 3
rd
, 7
th
and 11
th
houses should also be studied simultaneously as they are pertinent
to relationships and communication.

VOIDS in all three houses denotes an individual who has no desire to form relationships
on a communicative level BUT if the 5
th
or 8
th
houses are occupied, the individual would
be interested in forming close liaisons through emotional or physical contact.

Planets in the 11
th
hose with none I the 7
th
house indicates an ease with mental or
intellectual communication with casual associates rather than close partners.

If just the 3
rd
house is occupied, an attachment to relatives takes precedence over all
other relationships.

The 4
th,
8
th
and 12
th
houses deal with strong or repressed emotions and psychic
tendencies.

A total VOID in these houses renders the individual more open and creative in
expression and less liable to emotional instability but there will also be a lack in depth
of feeling unless Water signs are well represented in the chart.

With just the 8
th
house occupied, the individual chooses to express emotional needs
purely through sexual activity.

A solely occupied 4
th
house suggests that the individual seeks emotional security from
the confines of home.

7 | P a g e

A solely occupied 12
th
house indicates that the individual is reclusive on an emotional
level and may live in a secret world of fantasy and imagination. Feelings are deep but
difficult to demonstrate.

The 1
st
, 5
th
, and 9
th
houses pertain to Self expression.

Planets solely in the 1
st
indicate an individual who can be obsessively concerned with his
own personal effect on the outside world resulting in vanity and self centeredness.

A solely occupied 5
th
house can create a compulsively creative lifestyle that is
dangerous. There may be over large families, too much risk taking, and fatalistic love
affairs.

A solely occupied 9
th
house indicates an overly zealous religious personality or
philosophical attitudes that are difficult to integrate into the outer personality and
creative endeavors.

There is often much education and traveling undertaken with little creative
accomplishment.

It is also wise to review the 7
th
, 8
th
and 9
th
houses for further information regarding
emotional status and intimate relations.

A lack of planets in all three of these houses indicates detachment or disinterest in
forming close relationships. Sometimes the general physical (handicaps) and mental
(disability) circumstances of the individual deny emotional contact. If only one of these
houses is occupied, the house will describe the area in which the individual emphatically
chooses to connect on a relationship level. It often implies a karmic past tie where the
individual is being tested.

A solely occupied 5
th
house in this grouping suggests over romantic instincts and a
tendency towards casual affairs or infidelity.

A solely occupied 7
th
indicates the individual revels in the permanency and closeness of
a binding commitment.

A solely occupied 8
th
house indicates a tendency towards becoming obsessed by the
sexual aspects of a relationship.

The 4
th
and 10
th
houses should also be discerned when assessing parental influence. If
one of these house is occupied and the other empty it suggests that one parent played
a more prominent role in the individuals upbringing.

8 | P a g e

The empty house signifies a parent who was literally physically absent or detached or
disinclined to demonstrate parental love.

then self achieve.

CADENT: Lack of adaptability, versatility, and/or mobility.

The Part of Fortune Pars Fortuna

The Part of Fortune is one of the most fascinating parts of the horoscope. Not being a
planet itself, this mystical Arabian placement not only depends on planets and how well
their energies cooperate and enhance each other, but also on another part of the
horoscope that is also not a planet. Thus, if the Part of Fortune has no true
independence of its own, how important a role does it play in our lives?

On a very simplistic level the Part of fortune may be considered a lucky spot in ones
horoscope a source of opportunity through which one may achieve his greatest
desires. Yet the idea of luck, opportunity, fulfillment, and completion remains abstract
unless the individual makes a concerted effort towards his goal. It is the area where
one finds JOY and abundance.

To find the Part of Fortune, we simply move the Sun to the Ascendant. Then, we
move the Moon the same number of degrees and in the same direction we moved the
Sun. Where this puts the Moon, is- The Part of Fortune. Of course its always easier to
just let good astro-software compute it for you!

What this says about the meaning of this important Arabian Part is that when we move
the components of the Primal Triad our innate Spirit (The Sun) to co-join with our self
(the Ascendant), then our Soul (the Moon), it winds up in the most fortunate place for
us, and this placement, by the meaning of the Sign and House it is in, becomes our
Part of Fortune.

In essence: The Part of Fortune symbolizes that place in the horoscope
through which the Sun, Moon and the Ascendant are in the best harmonic
relationship to one another and are easily expressed to the greatest
advantage for the individual. It describes how we find true joy.
10 | P a g e

Aries: Here the individual experiences the need and energy for activity. If he flows with
this, he will find there are very few obstacles in his path that he cannot overcome. An
inherent bravery pushes him onward so that he is able to transcend all of his self-
doubts. His great successes come from realizing that this energy is strong enough to
grant him independence.
Taurus: The person with this placement seeks all that is solid and enduring and does
not care for those pleasures which are fleeting and superficial. He desires to know the
meaning and uses of all things, so that he many construct a firm future. His joy is
based on the ability to sustain and develop the substance of life.
Gemini: The Part of Fortune placed in Gemini gives one great joy through
communication and learning, and the connection with people these engender. This
person is seeking and gleaning new understandings from everyone he meets. The
people in his life are more important for the ideas they convey than for who they are.
Here, too, there is an attempt to keep things at a light level without becoming
enmeshed in emotions. Many people come and go in his life, and he receives
stimulation and information from all of them.
Cancer: This individual is given great joy when expressing the deep felt impulse of
devotion. He seeks people and circumstances through which he can experience warmth
and closeness. This is energy of feeling. There is much happiness derived from being

cooperation with the universe. There is a desire for a childlike simplicity in all actions.
Leo: Here there is a great yearning to act as the "center" and be in command. Through
self-mastery the individual seeks to be a source of inspiration and guidance to others. A
leader must lead, and he must not shirk the problems and responsibilities which only he
has the will and power to solve. Great joy comes from accomplishing large scale
achievements which in some way stand as shining examples and symbols of what man
is capable of when he uses his potential. This person not only seeks self-betterment,
but also the improvement of the society as a whole.
Virgo: Here the individual achieves great happiness by creating a sense of "organized
purity" in his environment. He seeks cleanliness, not only in personal hygiene, but also
in the living and working quarters.
He also experiences a kind of cleanliness in the way in which thoughts are organized.
Highly sensitive to the external environment, this person is very aware of how much he
is affected by personal responses to apparently negative emotion.
Libra: Here the individual reaches his greatest happiness through cooperating with an
energy which can be called "non-self-assertion." He is most comfortable going along
11 | P a g e

with others, rather than expressing personal desires which might disturb the harmony
sought from the company he keeps. There is an attempt to blend with the desires of
others. This results in a continual shifting of the point of view in an attempt to gain
acceptance.
Scorpio: Here the individual reaches his greatest joy by participating in the process of
regeneration. This is linked with sexuality, on the physical plane, and the spiritual quest
on the higher mental and emotional levels. Sexuality, the essence of life and the
creative force, becomes a very important factor in this individuals make up. There is an
intense desire to probe into the meaning of life.
Sagittarius: Here the individual feels the energy of abundant freedom. He seeks both
mental and physical open spaces and avoids confining situations and circumstances
which limit his possibilities. Of all the signs of the Zodiac, this has the greatest ability to
experience a joyful life. The existence here can be naturally happy and bountiful.
Capricorn: Here an individual reaches greatest happiness watching his life assume a
definite form and structure. This person has many ambitions and hopes, but remains
discontented until the necessary steps for their enactment have been formulated and
set in motion. He seeks to keep in touch with his ultimate purpose at all times.
Aquarius: Here the individual experiences his greatest happiness by flowing with the
energies of awareness and enlightenment. Unfettered by the bonds set by society,
unlimited by the confines of predictable expectation, he is able to experience all that
exists outside of the limits of established society. He seeks to know ALL-about man, the
world, the universe.
Pisces: The part of Fortune placed here allows one to experience the joy of
transcending time, space and thought. The powerful intuition and attunement to cosmic
forces which comes from the part of Fortune in Pisces gives an individual a mysterious,
magnetic quality. There is a sense that this person knows the unknown intimately.
.He also experiences the restrictions of living in a finite consciousness in which the
only reality is thought to be that which can be seen, touched, or felt emotionally. If he
is to be happy, he is not to identify with that kind of reality.
Part of Fortune in 1st House:
Part of Fortune in the 1
st
House suggests that your greatest success will come by
developing independence and self-sufficiency - meeting life experience with individual
initiative and not being dependent on the views of others.

12 | P a g e

Part of Fortune in 2nd House: Suggests that you need to discover what is of real
value to you. Money and the things it will buy are of extreme importance, but only
insofar as how your possessions reflect true value. You can be extremely lucky with
money if it truly reflects a sincere value. Eventually you will develop an ability to see
what is personally meaningful and necessary.

Part of Fortune in 3rd House: You will have the ability to meet the obstacles found
within your immediate environment and deal effectively with them. Developing the
ability to think clearly is what will bring your greatest fortune.

Part of Fortune in 4th House: The feeling for home and roots will be strong.
Happiness will come through building an emotional foundation strong enough to
support future growth. This position gives the possibility of finding fulfillment in a
broader way through identification with a social, professional or national whole.

Part of Fortune in 5th House: Success usually comes from the growth of creative
abilities, or in a will to power. Great joy comes from being deeply and intensely involved
in all that you are able to create. With this placing you must be very discriminating with
your choice of friends.

Part of Fortune in 6th House: Happiness may be found in work, self-improvement
and self-discipline. You will be at your best during times of crisis because of an ability to
take the correct action. Great joy will come from developing your natural abilities and

other people.

deep study of such subjects as sociology, psychology, religion and metaphysical law.
There is also a possibility of distant travels.
13 | P a g e

Part of Fortune in 10th House: You will seek happiness through accomplishment
and in fulfilling a constructive role in society.

Part of Fortune in 11th House: You may have the urge to be a reformer or pioneer
of new social, cultural or spiritual values. Happiness will come from contact with bright,
intelligent people or friends who stimulate your imagination with inspired ideas and
noble concepts.

Part of Fortune in 12th House: You may find happiness in accepting and thus
transforming or dissolving your Karma to complete a cycle of experience. The
achievements of this cycle may become the seeds or foundation of a new cycle. In an
'occult' sense, you may even find it possible to reach 'personal immortality', so that
what you are as a formed mind is able to survive the disintegration of the physical
body. You will find great happiness and joy through periods of solitude for meditation
and attunement with your inner self.
Aspects to the Part of Fortune
No Aspect: This is a very common condition. It is interesting in this case to study the
planet that is closest to the POF as it gives a clue of how the individual will achieve
the end results.
Conjunction: The energy helps the individual reach his greatest JOY if he learns how
to use it and operate it positive ways.
The energy is directive and points out the path towards happiness in a way that the
individual cannot help but fine it.
Square: A tension is created to push the individual in the direction of action. The
individual also learns and appreciates the fact that JOY is something much more
difficult to sustain than attain.
Trine: The energy brings outside circumstances in to the individuals life which leads
him to happiness.
Opposition: What appears to be taken away in one area of life is given in another
area of life. Everything functions better when the POF is not used solely for personal
benefit.

Analysis of star positions is one of the oldest modes of astrology. Imagine if you will,
the ancient astronomer/astrologers gazing up at the myriad beauty of the night sky.
Consider how the marvel of the Cosmos with its constellations made up of brilliant stars
served not only as a source of wonderment but also as a source of knowledge to these
ancient seers. Like a vast cosmic diary, the night sky and its splendid array of star maps
hold the history, myths, and beliefs of mankind.

What are Fixed Stars? They are exactly what their name implies, stars that are fixed or
stationary in position.

Youre probably thinking, ... well, thats just common sense, and you are correct
however, there is something that requires a bit more contemplation.

In ancient times, everything in the night sky, with the exception of the Moon, was a
star. In fact, there were two categories of stars, fixed stars and moving stars.
As mankind advanced and reason evolved, the moving stars became known as planets
and the concept of the solar system was born. The Fixed Stars were a very important
source of analysis and prediction during ancient times. The astrologers held the keys to
destiny. Their prognostications affected the fate of kings, conquerors, and nations. For
example, when an heir to the throne was born, the astrologers were called to interpret
the worthiness and potential power of the heir apparent. Fixed Stars connected to any
of the important angles or to a planet in a nativity told a tale of destiny. The
implications revealed in the chart had a great influence on how the native would be
perceived and treated during life.

The original interpretations of the Fixed Stars were for the most part, dire and harsh.
Modern astrology has modified these interpretations with a more realistic and moderate
tone, although, the old meanings still hold their weight, particularly when a Fixed Star
shows itself prominently such as in cases of disaster.

There are four Fixed Stars in particular that are of major importance known as the
Royal Stars of Persia. The four Royal Stars of Persia are considered the Watchers of the
Heavens. They are associated with the fixed signs of the zodiac, Taurus, Scorpio, Leo,
and Aquarius.

All of the Royal Stars are very powerful and each one offers success, glory, and even
fame if, as Fixed Star expert Bernadette Brady reveals, A nemesis can be overcome.

The Watcher in the East is Fixed Star Aldebaran. Aldebaran is the brightest star in the
constellation of TAURUS the BULL and represents the Eye of the Bull.

15 | P a g e

The challenge inherent in Aldebaran is one of integrity and honor. At one or several
points in life, the individual is presented with circumstances concerning moral dilemmas
that test integrity. Often, this manifests as temptations to compromise ones position. If
Aldebaran rises in a chart (near the Ascendant), the individual is usually characterized
by strong principles and projects high ethical behavior. This doesnt mean that the
individual has an easy time, because he/she will expend much energy fighting for what
he/she believes. Keeping the moral status quo can bring success, but any wavering of
position will bring about loss of all that has been gained.

The Watcher in the West is Antares. Antares is the brightest star in the constellation of
SCORPIUS the SCORPION and represents the Heart of the Scorpion. As with all things
Scorpionic this star indicates that the individual will go to extremes. Worldly success is
offered with Antares, but often the individual is his/her own worst enemy seeking out
intense experiences whether or not these experiences are necessary. One can expect a
good share of drama with this star, which can lead to crash and burn and total self-
undoing OR to total healing. An individual with Antares prominent in the nativity is likely
to be resolute and unbending.

The Watcher in the North is Regulus. Regulus is the brightest star in the constellation
of LEO the LION and represents the Heart of the Lion. The challenge inherent in
Regulus is one of revenge. Regulus often signifies success in ones chosen field of
endeavor unless one stoops to plotting and revenge because of anger or hurt. In this
case, revenge results in loss of power and a fall from public grace. The energy of this
star can be very stressful because its nature is to push the individual to succeed. The
energy of Regulus makes it easy for an individual to step into success in the outside
world, should this be desired. It can however, manifest in a less dramatic fashion where
the individual takes pride in small achievements. An individual exemplifying Regulus
influence usually displays very strong inner convictions, a good amount of courage, and
deep dedication.

The Watcher in the South is Formalhaut. Formalhaut is the brightest star in the
constellation PISCES the SOUTHERN FISH. This may cause some confusion when the
constellation of Aquarius has been mentioned at the beginning of this section. For
matters of clarity, the span of this constellation is from approx. 15 degrees Aquarius to
5 degrees Pisces. Formalhaut means the Mouth of the Fish in Arabic and the mouth
lies in the part of the sky that is connected to the waters of life spilled by Aquarius.
This star has a rather spiritual nature and the idealism connected to it finds a nemesis
in materialism. The concept of Formalhaut speaks of gain through hard work...no pain,
no gain as they say! The Piscean trait of idealism filters in through the energy of this
star, which can manifest positively as a righteous path based on noble cause. The
individual is expected to be honest with his/ her self regarding motivation.
Formalhaut represents collective service not glory seeking.
An astrologer will look to see if a Fixed Star position is conjunct a planet or important
angle of a natal chart in determining its influence upon the individual.
16 | P a g e

Fixed Stars are often categorized as Neutral, Lucky or Unlucky. The maximum orb of
