Persia Unites ManY Lands

East of Mesopotamia, in modern lran, arose a new power in the


ancient wortd, Persia. The area had good farmland and was rich in

minerals such as copper, lead, gold, and silver. The Persians
with other forces to help defeat the Assyrians. About 550 BCE, they
began conquests of their own. )

Their leader was King cyrus, an excellent general. His troops

King'cyrus dies in 530 BCE, and the king who followed him had to
decide-how to run the vast new empire. His son was a failure, but the next
king - Darius - proved as good a king as Cyrus had been. He put down
sevlral revolts, won more land for the empire, and created a government
for the empire. Only Greece escaped Persian control'
