Internal Assessment Test No. 03

Department of Aeronautical Engineering

II B.E (Third Semester)

ME2204 FLUID MECHANICS AND MACHINERY

Total marks: 100 Date: 26-10-2013 Duration: 3 hrs

PART A - Answer all Questions (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1. Define Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluids?

2. Mention the types of minor losses?

3. State Buckingham Pi theorem?

4. Explain briefly the various types of similitudes?

5. Define Froudes number and Webers number and also write its expression?

6. What is priming? Why is it necessary?

7. What are air vessels and describe its function?

8. What is specific speed of a turbine? How are turbines classified based on this

number?

9. What are the advantages of Centrifugal pump over reciprocation pump?

10. Differentiate impulse and reaction turbines?

PART B - Answer all Questions (5 x 16 = 80 Marks)

11. a) i) Derive energy equation and state the assumptions made? (10)

ii) Describe capillary rise and capillary depression? (6)

(OR)

b) i) Derive Darcy-Weisbach equation for friction losses in a pipe flow? (8)

ii) Obtain an expression of loss of head due to sudden expansion in a pipe flow? (8)

12. a) i) Explain the working principle of reciprocating pump with neat sketch? (10)

ii) Explain the working principle and construction of rotary pump with neat

diagram? (6)

(OR)

b) A single acting reciprocating pump has piston diameter of 0.15 m and stroke

length of 0.3 m. It discharges 300 lit/min of water at 60 rpm. The suction and

deliver heads are 5 m and 15 m respectively. Find the theoretical discharge,

coefficient of discharge and percentage slip of the pump. Also determine the

power required to drive the pump. Assume the mechanical efficiency of the

pump is 75%. (16)

13. a) The frictional torque T of a disc of diameter D rotating at a speed N in a fluid of

viscosity and density in a turbulent flow is given by

(OR)

b) The ratio of lengths of a submarine and its model is 30:1. The speed of the

submarine (prototype) is 10 m/s. The model is to be tested in a wind tunnel.

Find the speed of air in the wind tunnel. Also determine the ratio of drag

(resistance) between the model and its proto-type. Take the value of kinematic

viscosities of sea water and air as 0.012 Stoke and 0.016 Stoke respectively.

The density of sea water and air is given as 1030 kg/m

3

and 1.24 kg/m

3

respectively. (16)

14. a) i) Obtain an expression for work done by impeller of centrifugal pump on water

per second per unit weight of water. (8)

ii) Derive an expression for specific speed of a centrifugal pump? (8)

(OR)

b) A centrifugal pump discharges 2000 l/s of water per second developing a head

of 20 m when running at 300 rpm. The impeller diameter at the outlet and

outflow velocity is 1.5 m and 3.0 m/s respectively. It vanes are set back at an

angle of 30 at the outlet, determine i) Manometric efficiency, ii) power

required by the pump.

If inner diameter is 750 mm, find the minimum speed to start the pump.

15. a) Show that the hydraulic efficiency for a inward flow reaction turbine discharges

radially and the velocity of flow through runner as constant, is given by the

relation

If the vanes are radial at inlet, the show

(16)

(OR)

b) The outer diameter of an impeller of a centrifugal pump is 300 mm and outlet

width 40 mm. the pump is running at 900 rpm and is working against a total

head of 12 m. The vanes are set back at an angle of 35 and manometric

efficiency is 70%. Determine the following i) Velocity of flow at outlet, ii)

Velocity of water leaving the vane, iii) Angle made by the absolute velocity at

outlet with the direction of motion of outlet and iv) Discharge. (16)
