Listen Up
A roommates blaring music may be more than an annoyance. It can actually pose a
substantal health risk.
Britany Hensley, a doctoral candidate in the UFs audiology and speech-language
pathology program, recently helped uncover fndings that suggest noise-induced hearing
loss may be much more common among college students than previously thought.
All 56 of the studys student volunteers self-reported normal hearing in telephone
interviews, but screening tests revealed that one in four were mistaken about being able
to hear normally.

Facilites
Among UFs more than 100 interdisciplinary research and educaton centers,
bureaus and insttutes are the UF Shands Cancer Center, Genetcs Insttute,
Engineering Research Center for Partcle Science and Technology, the McKnight
Brain Insttute, Water Insttute, the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research,
the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Biomedical Research and Biotechnology,
the Florida Museum of Natural History, the Database Systems Research and
Development Center, and the Insttute for Future Space Transport.
The 2,000-acre central campus includes more than 900 buildings, 170 of
which are classrooms and labs.
Libraries comprise ten sites campus wide and hold more than 4.2 million
volumes.
The Curts M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts seats 2,000.
The Florida Museum of Natural History and the Harn Museum of Art are
centers for exhibitons, lectures, flms and discussions
The McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity houses the worlds
second-largest buterfy and moth collecton and a screened vivarium with
hundreds of free-fying buterfies.
J. Wayne Reitz Union and two student recreaton and ftness centers serve
the needs of thousands of students daily.
Ben Hill Grifn Stadium at Florida Field seats 88,548. Stephen C. OConnell
Center, home to Gator basketball, gymnastcs, swimming/diving and
volleyball, seats 12,000
Hensley was surprised to learn that 25 percent of study
partcipants had hearing loss of 15 decibels or more at one or
more test frequencies. Of these, 7 percent had losses of 25
decibels or more, which is clinically signifcant and diagnosable
as mild hearing loss.
While such losses do not warrant the use of hearing aids, they
can make it more difcult to discriminate subtle speech sounds
and detect high frequency noises like birds songs or childrens
voices.

Mockingbirds in Danger
Christne Stracey has always been fascinated with birds, but
when she began studying mockingbirds around Gainesville
for her doctorate in biology, she found a disturbing reality.
In Straceys study, which included video cameras focused on
nests in several Gainesville neighborhoods, domestc cats
were by far the most signifcant predator of mockingbird
nests. Cats killed more Northern mockingbird nestlings
in urban areas than raccoons, snakes, opossums, fying
squirrels, American crows, blue jays and Swallow-tailed
Kites did combined.
Stracey recommends that cat owners confne their pets
inside at night to reduce nest predaton rates.
I hope the public will be more receptve to the suggeston
to keep cats indoors at night than they have been to
requests to not let cats out at all, since it is a compromise that recognizes some of the
issues that outside cat owners deal with, said Stracey, who is now an assistant professor
of biology at Westminster College in Salt Lake City.

On his frst day as a graduate student, David Roueche jumped
in a car with his advisor and headed to Tuscaloosa, Alabama on
the heels of one of the worst tornadoes in U.S. history.
There he worked with a team of engineers sifing through
rubble and documentng the dreadful details of how hundreds
of homes had literally come apart at the seams when a
gargantuan tornado ripped through town just a few days prior.

Computer 1,340 1,340
Food 3,550 3,550
Room on campus 6,690 6,690
Room of campus 6,690 6,690
These expenses may vary considerably and they do not include personal
expenses, transportaton costs or insurance. Computer costs vary, depending
on level and degree program.
The majority of the damage could have been avoided with some basic building design
improvements, Roueche said. The fndings were the same a month later in Joplin,
Missouri.
As a doctoral student in the UF Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering, Roueche
is working with fellow researchers to develop practcal guidelines and new constructon
materials for tornado-resilient structures.
Thousands of tornadoes strike in the U.S. annually claiming lives and wreaking
economic disaster, he said. As engineers, we should feel obligated to provide practcal
solutons that can help mitgate these losses.

Making the Cut
When Margo Klar learned that thousands of babies die annually worldwide because of
umbilical cord infectons, she knew she had to do something. As a doctoral student in
epidemiology with a masters in public health and a bachelors in chemical engineering,
Klar had the knowledge to make a diference. With a $100,000 grant from the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundaton she had the resources.
Tetanus disease is just one of many problems that can occur because of the way the
umbilical cord is cut. Using a rusty scalpel, placing the umbilical cord on an unsanitary

table or cutng with an old razor blade can all lead to umbilical
cord infectons in babies.
To address the problem, Klar is creatng a simple ceramic cutng
device, called ceramic umbilical cord fnger scissors.
My device makes use of materials that do not rust and stay
sharper longer and over repettve use when compared to
stainless steel, Klar said.
If the device works as planned, Klar hopes to distribute the
scissors in regions with high incidence of umbilical cord infecton.
