INTERVENTION STRATEGY:

Response Cards
Brief Description: The Response Card method targets reading comprehension. It is
utilized as a way to allow each student the opportunity to practice answering
comprehension questions in an interactive method, targeting the growth of reading
comprehension skills. The steps for implementation are from Understanding, Assessing,
and Intervening on Reading Problems (oseph, !""#$.
Materials Needed: %ry&erase 'oards and dry&erase markers, small chalk'oards and
chalk, small poster 'oards and markers, or construction paper and markers (students
should receive one sheet of construction paper for each question$.
For the Variation: Response cards, clothes pins
Implementation: This strategy can 'e implemented 'y allowing the students to work
individually or in small groups of !&(. It can 'e facilitated 'y a teacher, paraprofessional
or adult volunteer.
). *tudents are instructed to read a passage or story.
!. +nce reading has 'een completed, students are provided with dry&erase 'oards
and dry&erase markers, small chalk'oards and chalk, small poster 'oards and
markers, or construction paper and markers.
(. *tudents are alerted that the teacher will 'e asking questions 'ased on the reading.
,. *tudents are then instructed to write their response to the teacher-s question on
their 'oards.
.. +nce responses are written the students hold their 'oards in the air and the teacher
checks the response of each student.
#. The teacher writes the correct response on the 'oard, and students check to see if
their responses match the teacher-s answer.

Variations:
This strategy can 'e altered with the use of preprinted response cards and personalized
clothes pins.

clothes pins which will 'e placed on the response card that they 'elieve has the
correct answer.
(. *tudents are alerted that the teacher will 'e asking questions 'ased on the reading.
,. *tudents are then instructed to place their clothes pin on the correct response card,
or the one with the 'est answer.
.. The teacher indicates the correct response, and students check to see if their
responses match the teacher-s answer.
