Personal Statement
I have learned a plethora of information while being a Bachelor of Social Work W.O.W
Student. I have enjoyed the whole journey of being a student and I am ready to be a social
worker. Achieving my B.S.W has changed the person that I am and I have a different
perspective of what social work truly is. I know the qualities and characteristics that a social
worker should exhibit. A quote that I have created while being a social worker student is,
Being a social worker isnt just a career, but it is an obligation and a duty to support people
that are in need. What this means to me is a social worker is someone who is dedicated to
work with families and individuals who are in need of social justice or enhancement in their
quality of life. A social worker does not look at their position as just an occupation or just a
career because our position is very vital. Our position can have positive or negative effects
upon a persons life, so it should not be taken lightly. Social work is a very valuable occupation
and it has an impact upon so many people.
The in class curriculum for my undergraduate programs in social work is classified into
four different sequences: social welfare policy and services, social work practice, research, and
human behavior and the social environment. I think that the four categories that I was taught
for learning to be a social worker has been very useful and teach future social workers what are
needed to be a generalist practitioner. The 'social welfare category' taught me the history of
social welfare in the United States, the basic concepts of social welfare, and the current trends
and issues in social welfare. The subject of the 'social work practice' taught me knowledge,
skills, and framework in social work practice. The two classes of 'research' taught me the

inferential statistics and quantitative and qualitative designs for evaluating service delivery and
related policy. The category of 'human behavior and the social environment', I learned the
ecological systems perspectives, knowledge and theories of human development across the life
span, human behavior studied within the context of the social systems in which people live, and
the emphasis on how social systems promote and deter human development, and the influence
of diversity on human development. I also learned the diverse cultures, family structure, roles,
immigration, and assimilation experiences of marginalized groups; influence of dominant
culture on these groups while being a social worker student.
My field placement was one of the best experiences I had while being a B.S.W student. I
was taught a plethora of vital information to be a good social worker. My placement helped me
to understand the values of social work in a more profound way. Social work is a vital
profession due to the huge positive impact that the field has upon people. The experience that
I gained from my field placement gave me a better perspective of what social work is about. I
have experienced the golden moments of great change and good improvements with clients,
which motivates me to continue to work harder. When I was working at my field placement I
felt obligated to do my best for my clients, and to help them with all the available resources and
interventions. I understand the importance of documentation and how often it should be
completed when working with a client. While working at my internship it has assisted me in the
development of ethics for social work practice. I have been able to apply many of the National
Association of Social Workers code of ethics while working at my field placement. My
experiences at the agency have contributed to my knowledge of ethical social work practice
and I learned the procedure of what should be done if there is an ethical dilemma.

I know with my education experiences I will be enabled to be able to motivate, support,
and guide my clients during their time of turmoil. I understand the correlation of social work
and social problems. I am aware of the national social problems that each community have.
There are people who need help that are poor, disabled, physically and emotionally challenged.
I know how to not be self critical towards people, how to have good relationships with people,
how to behave towards people with different race, religion, culture, and beliefs. I know how to
work under pressure and know how to not let my personal issues interfere with my work.
Seeking a professional social work education is one of the best decisions I have made and I am
happy that I will soon be starting my career. It is important that I successfully pursue a great
career in the field. There are many vital reasons why I chose to pursue a Bachelors in Social
Work at Wayne State University. I wanted to be able to have a chance to have a huge impact
upon peoples lives. I wanted to have the opportunity to help assist people in their vital time of
need and assure that people has the best quality of care. I understand the uttermost
importance of being a social worker and I would like to help people with the passion that I have
to better the community. I have gained sufficient knowledge to be able to change people lives
and help the community. My goal is to be a dedicated Social Worker, so I can make a difference
in peoples lives by enhancing their well being. I love helping people and influencing them to
keep a positive perspective about life. I look at social work as being a pleasure and I have a
strong desire to help people with my empathy, non-judgmental attitude, patience, and
compassion. I will also contribute sincerity, generosity, loyalty, consideration, and organization
to my occupation. I will be enthusiastic and dedicated to being an excellent social worker.
