For Teacher For each student/group Laptop with Internet Access 8 Groups: each group Large Index Card and a pack of coloured pencils Multimedia Projector Each student : Laptop with Internet access
1. Students are aware that we live on earth which is part of the Universe 2. Students are aware that universe is made up of planets and stars
______________________________________________________________________________________ CONCEPT OR PRINCIPLE
Our solar system is one of the systems in the universe. The solar system consist if celestial bodies revolving around the Sun
OBJECTIVES.
At the end of the lesson, student will be able to:
Objectives Classification Identify the components of our Solar System Low level Cognitive / Knowledge Describe the organization of the Solar System, emphasizing the positions and sizes of the planets relative to the Sun
High level Cognitive/Knowledge
PROCESS SKILLS
Observing
Communicating scientific ideas, observations and arguments
Extracting from available information relevant solutions to particular situation
__________________________________________________________________________________________ SET INDUCTION
Students are introduced to map of Physics land: The Land of Science with background music and meet a character from Physics land called The Guardian. This is shown to the students via power point presentation. The Guardian then transports you to Universum a region in Physics land where the people who live there study the Universe. Students are then shown a visual display of Universum. The students are then introduced to Astrum a woman who lives in Universum who will show the students the secrets of Universum along with the teacher.
__________________________________________________________________________________________ DEVELOPMENT
The students will then be shown by The Guardian the concept of the Universe and how large the Universe really is, this is done by the use of a video. After the video, the teacher will explain that The Solar System is a Galaxy which is a small part of the Universe which will confirm what was shown in the video. The students would then be taken by Astrum to visit the bodies that make up the Solar System. The students will be shown the Sun which is a Star and be told that it is the centre of the Solar System. Additional information will be given by the teacher to the students. The students will be shown the entire system and get a visual on the order of the planets from the Sun. Astrum will then begin The Solar System Tour starting with the planet closest to the sun that is from Mercury to Neptune. After Neptune, students will then be told by their teacher that Pluto used to be a planet but it is now a dwarf planet. When students ask why? The teacher will tell them Let us ask an Astronomer. A video will then be shown to the students. After the video the students will be questioned by teacher about the video and also told about other bodies present in the Universe: meteors, meteorites and comets. In the video they would have learnt about Asteroids.
The students are then introduced to the Evil Wizard named Ignavus, who has stolen the Tome of Wisdom from Astrum. This tome contains all the secrets of Universum. Astrum has managed to tear out and burn some of the pages from the tome so that Ignavus does not get it. However, all this information is now lost. It is up to the students to help her recover the information.
Astrum then instructs the students to disguise the information.
Students will be divided into 8 groups. Each group will be given a large index card, a pack of coloured pencils and be assigned a planet Each group will make a postcard about the planet they are assigned. Inside the postcard will have information on the planet the group is assigned. Outside the postcard will be a drawing of the planet assigned. Each group will have to pretend they have visited the planet and are telling Astrum about their visit. At the end of the exercise the postcards will be given to the teacher to be delivered to Astrum
The students will be allowed to use the slide show to get information to put on the postcards also the teacher can provide further information.
Each group will also be allowed to use their Integrated Science textbook for further information if needed.
After all the postcards are given to the teacher, the teacher will ask the students if they enjoyed the activity and ask each group what they learnt about the planet they were assigned. The students will then be shown a musical summary of the main points of the lesson. __________________________________________________________________________________________ FINAL EVALUATION
When the activity is complete, each individual student will be asked to access the Final Mission on the slide show. The students will be asked to make up a spell in the form of an acronym to recall the names and sequence of the planets away from the Sun. This will be submitted to the teacher at the end of class.
