DRAINAGE EQUIPMENT

DRAINAGE EQUIPMENT are devices installed in the sanitary piping system to ensure
the proper removal of waste matter from a building while maintaining healthy and safe
conditions for the building occupants.

Types of Drainage Equipment

1. Backflow Valve a device used to prevent the reversal of flow of wastewater.
It is equipped with a flapper or flap (see the yellow part in the picture) which
automatically closes upon reversal of flow.

2. Sewage Ejector or Sewage Pump - a pump used to drain a plumbing fixture or
group of fixtures located at a lower elevation than the house drain or house
sewer.

3. Interceptor a device used to separate and retain undesirable matter while
allowing waste water to discharge into the drainage pipe.

a. Hair Interceptor used in barber shops, beauty parlors and swimming
pools to prevent hair from entering the drainage system.

b. Grease Interceptor prevents grease and oil to discharge into the drainage
system. It is equipped with baffles which retain oil and grease and prevent
them from entering the sanitary piping system. Grease interceptors are
used in restaurants, service stations, food processing plants, etc.

c. Sand Interceptor intercepts solids or semi-solids heavier than water, like
sand, that could be harmful to the drainage system.

4. Fixture Traps a device designed to retain a column of water which prevents
the entry of foul air into a building through a fixtures drain.

a. P-Trap a fixture trap, made of metal or plastic and shaped like a letter P,
used for sinks and lavatories.

b. Bottle Trap a fixture trap which has a cylindrical body instead of having
curves and bends found in P traps. Since the bottle trap does not occupy
much space, it is used where there is only limited space beneath sinks and
lavatories.

c. Drum Trap a fixture trap shaped like a miniature steel drum intended for
fixtures that are set on the floor such as bath tubs, foot baths and bidets.

d. S-Trap a variation of the P-trap wherein the outlet discharges vertically.
The P-traps outlet is horizontal.
