Electrical Fault Finding

For Rig Personnel 5 Days

Course Code:

AT 5206

Target Audience
This course is designed for electrical personnel involved in the maintenance of drilling
rig equipment. The main emphasis of the course is to develop a logical and systematic
approach to practical fault finding, particularly on AC and DC motor control systems.

Delivery
Teaching aids, equipment,
powerpoints, videos, questionnaires,
theory and practical assessments.

Course Objectives
Our objective is to give the candidates an increased understanding of the operating
principles of their motor drives, and to instil a structured methodology for practical fault
finding in order to enhance their trouble shooting and problem solving skills.

Certification
ATTS Certificate of Attendance
ATTS Final Certificate showing results
of theory and practical assessments
will be awarded.

Course Outline
The course examines the basics and operating principles of motor drive systems, and
covers the main components of typical generator and drive control switchboards as
used extensively on drilling rigs. Practical work will be undertaken in our training facility
on our fully functional motor control centre, practical drive units (AC motor soft-start
units & motor variable frequency (VFD) and DC drives), and on our complete Ross Hill
type SCR system with 600V AC generators, DC drilling motors and top drive control
system.
The practical exercises are conducted on our working systems in a realistic environment,
and the candidates will get hands-on experience that is almost impossible to acquire
on the rig whilst drilling operations are in progress. With this experience and their
improved fault finding skills, troubleshooting time in the workplace (and potential rig
downtime) should be minimised.
