2. What are the different types of bituminous materials? Explain. (5)
3. With a neat sketch show different conflict points in a 4 legged intersection and
calculate the total number of possible conflicts. (5)

4. Calculate the values of ruling minimum and absolute minimum radius of horizontal
curve of a highway in plain terrain. Assume ruling design speed and maximum design
speed as 100 kmph and 80 kmph and maximum superelevation e = 0.07 and transverse
skid resistance f = 0.15. (5)
5. Explain (i) Warping Stresses and (ii) Frictional Stresses for a rigid pavement. (5)
6. Briefly describe the construction of WBM. (5)
7. Derive an equation for finding the super elevation required if the design coefficient of
lateral friction is f. Mention other variables used in this expression. (5)

Answer any three of the following 3*15= 45
8. (i) What do you mean by camber? What is the necessity of providing camber? (2+3)
(ii) Discuss the factors on which camber depends. What are the values of camber as
per IRC for different types of road surfaces? (2.5+2.5)
(iii) Derive an expression for finding the stopping sight distance at leveled surface and
slopes. (2.5+2.5)
9. (i) What are the objectives of providing transition curve in a roadway? (5)
(ii) Calculate the length of transition curve and the shift using the following data:
a) Design speed = 65 kmph,
b) Radius of circular curve = 220 m,
c) Allowable rate of introduction of superelevation (pavement rotated about
centre line) = 1 in 150,
d) Pavement width = 7 m,
e) Length of rigid wheel base = 6 m. (8)
(iii) While aligning a hill road with a ruling gradient of 6%, a horizontal curve of radius
60 m is encountered. Find the compensated gradient at the curve. (2)





10. (i) State the object of providing extra-widening of pavements on horizontal curves.
(ii) Derive an expression for extra-widening on curves for n number of traffic lanes.
(iii) Find the total widening required for a four lane highway on a horizontal curve of
270 m radius. Design speed of the road is 80 kmph and length of the wheel base is
6.1 m. (4+6+5)

11. (i) State difference between flexible pavement and rigid pavement. (3+3+9)
(ii) The design speed of highway is 80 kmph. There is a horizontal curve of radius
200m on a certain locality. Calculate the super elevation needed to maintain this
speed. If the maximum super elevation of 0.07 is not to be exceeded, calculate
maximum allowable speed on this horizontal curve as it is not possible to increase
the radius. Safe limit of transverse co-efficient of friction is 0.15.

12. (i) Write down the function of soil sub-grade, base, sub-base course for flexible and
rigid pavement.
(ii) Calculate the stresses at interior, edge and corner regions of cement concrete
pavement using Westergarads stress equations. Use the following data:
(a) Wheel load P = 5100 kg
(b) Modulus of elasticity of cement concrete, E = 3 x 10
