SUMMER REPORTER
Long-time community
supporters, Next to New,
donated a total of $70,000
to local groups and
organizations on May 6.
Run by volunteers, the
thrift shop sells donated
goods at a deep discount.
Twice a year, the shop
takes the stores revenue
and donates it back to the
community.
In 2013, Next to New
donated a record total of
$180,000 throughout the
year.
Last May, The
Mountaineer reported
the store was struggling
to nd volunteers who
were able to work the
hours needed to help sort
donations. The lack of help
had the store considering
closing its doors. However,
a volunteer with Next to
New said Tuesday that
although they still need
helpers, they have been
able to get by.
Next to New is open
every Thursday and
Friday from 10:00 a.m. to
2:30 p.m.
NOTE: The Confluence Heritage
Society who was not present
also received a $2,000 dona-
tion.

SUMMER REPORTER
Two years after his cancer diag-
nosis, 17-year-old Bernard Couve
says he is recovering well.
In 2012, Bernard was diagnosed
with Hodgkins lymphoma a
cancer that affected his white
blood cells located in an enlarged
lymph node in his chest. Bernards
mother Mandy Couve recalls how
shocking it was to hear that his
fatigue was more than something
minor.
You always think that other
people get cancer, not your child,
Mandy says, but at the same time
it was good to nally nd out what
was wrong with him and begin
treatment.
Bernard spent a good portion of
his Grade 10 year in Edmonton go-
ing through surgery and receiving
treatments. During his time in the
hospital, Bernards teachers helped
him to continue through his school
year so he wouldnt miss out on
assignments.
Mandy says that being away from
home took a toll on their family
because they were always apart
and stressed about how they were
going to pay for costs associated
with Bernards treatments.
Early this year, The Childrens
Wish Foundation of Canada
granted Bernard and his family
a week-long trip to Costa Rica a
wish that Bernard had wanted as
an escape from reality.
It was great to get away and
spend some time with the family,
says Mandy.
Last year, Bernard had applied
for a wish with the foundation,
after searching on the Internet for
a warm and tropical destination.
Reading reviews and seeing pic-
tures of the wildlife and rainforest,
Bernard decided Costa Rica would
be an ideal place for a vacation.
The Childrens Wish Foundation
had asked Bernard and his family
for three separate weeks that they
could go away and what Bernard
wanted to do while in Costa Rica.
The rest was arranged by the orga-
nization.
Granting the wish was huge,
Mandy continues. Its a great
organization, what they do is fan-
tastic.
In addition, The Childrens Wish
Foundation organized a volunteer
beach clean-up for Bernard and his
family, which was part of his wish
to pay it forward in Costa Rica.
We picked up garbage from the
beach and put up a sign that said
dont litter, says Bernard.
But Bernards favourite part of
his trip was a day spent in one of
the national parks.
It was actually really nice to just
get away from life, relax and calm
down a bit, says Bernard.
The Childrens Wish Founda-
tion grants wishes to children ages
three to 17 years old who have been
diagnosed with a life-threatening
illness. Since 1984, the foundation
has granted over 20,000 wishes to
Canadian children.
Now that I know about them,
I can support and help other
sick kids with their dreams and
wishes, said Bernard. Its really
something special.
This summer, Bernard says
he plans to do lots of shing and
camping. He is looking forward to
beginning his Grade 12 year, and
later hopes to earn a Bachelor of
Science and Geology degree, that
he says is his next big step.
