1. a) What do you understand by commercial and non-commercial energy sources?

8. a) The peak load on a power station is 30 mw. The loads having maximum demands of
25MW, 10 MW, 5 MW and 7 MW are connected to the power station. The capacity
of the power station is 40 MW and annual load factor is 50%.

iii) Demand factor
iv) Diversity factor
b) Explain the different methods adopted to control the nuclear pollution.

1. a) Describe the development of thermal power in the country during the last nine
plan period.
b) Describe the various factors which determine the location of a steam power station.

2. a) Draw a neat diagram of multi retort under feed stoker and explain its working.
Discuss its merits over other types of stokers. [10]
b) What are the advantages of burning the fuels in pulverized form? [6]

3. Explain various types of fuel injection systems with neat diagram.

4. a) An open cycle gas turbine plant takes air in at 1 bar and 32
0
C. The maximum
pressure ratio and maximum temperature of the cycle are limited to 7bar and
1100 K respectively. The isometric efficiencies of compressor and turbine are
84% and 85% respectively. The effectiveness of the regenerator is 0.6.
Assuming the combustion efficiency 90% and neglecting the heat and
pressure losses in the system, find the cycle efficiency and A:F ratio used.
If the air flow is 10 kg/sec, find the generation capacity of the plant assuming
mechanical efficiency 96% and generation efficiency 95%.
b) What are the relative merits and demerits of using air or O
2
in a gasification
plant when the gasification plant is integrated with closed cycle gas turbine.

5. a) What are the functions of surge tank and fore bay? Describe any two types of
surge tanks.
b) What do you understand by water hammer and what are its effects on the
power plant design?

6. What do you understand by MHD? Explain the working principle of MHD with
neat sketches.

conventional gas turbine plant of the same capacity.

5. a) Draw a neat diagram of storage type hydroelectric power plant and describe the
functions of each component used in the plant. [10]
b) Why the combined operation of hydro and thermal plants is more economical
than individual operation of the plant? [6]

6. a) Explain the working of a fuel cell and list out its advantages over other non
conventional systems. [12]
b) Differentiate single basin and double basin systems. [4]
