What is critical radius of insulation or critical thickness? 5. Define fin efficiency. 6. Define fin effectiveness. 7. What is the significance of biot number? 8. What is meant by lumped heat analysis? 9. What is meant by semi-infinite solids? 10. Define fin or extended surfaces? 16 mark questions 1. A) Derive the three dimensional heat conduction equation in Cartesian coordinates. B) Explain the different modes of heat transfer with appropriate expression? 2. Circumferential aluminium fins of rectangular profile( 1.5cm wide and 1 mm thick) are fitted on to a 90 mm engine cylinder with a pitch of 10mm. The height of the cylinder is 120mm. The cylinder base temperature before and after fitting the fins are 200 0 c and 150 0 c respectively. Take ambient air at 30 0 c and h(average)= 100W/m 2 K. Estimate the heat dissipated from the finned and the unfinned surface areas of cylinder body. 3. A composite wall is made up of 2.5cm copper plate (k= 355W/mK), a 3.2mm layer of asbestos (k=.110 W/mK) and a 5cm layer of fibre plate (k= .049W/mK). The wall is subjected to an overall temperature difference of 560 0 c (560 0 c on the Cu plate side and 0 0 c on the fibre plate side). Estimate the heat flux through this composite wall and the interface temperature between asbestos and fibre plate. 4. A steel tube of 5cm ID, 7.6cm OD and k= 15 W/mK is covered with an insulation of thickness 2cm and thermal conductivity, .2W/mK. A hot gas at 330 0 c with h= 60 W/m 2 K. Assuming a tube length of 10 m, find the heat loss from the tube to the air. Also find, across which layer the largest temperature drop occurs. 5. At a certain instant of time, the temperature distribution in a long cylindrical tube is, T= 800+ 1000r- 5000r 2 where, T is in 0 c and rin m. The inner and outer radii of the tube are respectively 30 cm and 50 cm. The tube material has a thermal conductivity of 58 W/mK and a thermal diffusivity of .004 m 2 /hr. Determine the rate of heat flow at inside and outside surfaces per unit length and rate of change of temperature at inner and outer surfaces.
