When do you use the before a noun?
Fill in the gaps with a, an or the using the Study Note on page 778 to help you.

Activity 3 Transitive or intransive?
1 What is the difference between a transitive and intransitive verb? Work with a partner and look up some
verbs together. Discuss what makes them transitive or intransitive. Use the Grammar notes on pages 27
and 31 to help you.
Look at the following verbs. Are they intransitive or transitive? Check in the Longman Active Study
Dictionary to see if you are right!

Now write an example sentence for each of the above verbs.

Activity 1 a or the?
1 Boardwork:
Write DEFINITE ARTICLE on one side of the board and INDEFINITE ARTICLE on the other with the and a/an respectively
underneath each one.
Ask students when they think they use each of these before a noun. Give them time to think about it with a partner.
Get them to look at the Grammar notes on pages 3 and 7 to help them out.
Write an example sentence based on the Grammar note under each of the articles, and ask students to record these in their
notebooks. Then get them to do the exercise.

Activity 2 if clauses
2 As in Exercise 1, put the question to the students before they look in their dictionaries. This will give them a chance to think
about the question before looking up the answer.
As a class, turn to the Grammar note (2) for if clauses on page 87, and give students some time to read through the
explanation.
Boardwork:
Write the following sentence on the board, and get students to think of as many possible sentences as possible, and then call
them out individually to you.
If I had lots and lots of money, I would ... .
Get students to do the exercise in pairs and tell them that the words they are going to use in the second half of each sentence
can be found in the Longman Active Study Dictionary together with an example sentence to help them. Monitor them as
they work to check they use each word correctly and that the sentences make sense.
Suggested answers:
a) If I had lots of money to spend at the supermarket, Id buy foods like exotic fruit and vegetables, and then Id buy some
good bottles of wine!
b) If I won the lottery, Id give up work.
c) If I spent Christmas in New York, Id take some time off work.
d) If I got a job using my English, Id work abroad.
e) If our football team won the cup, Id definitely celebrate.
f) If I had six months off work, Id travel to the countries that Im interested in.
Activity 3 Transitive or intransitive?
2 Ask students to look up two or three verbs in the Longman Active Study Dictionary. Ask them what (I) or (T) means
(which is written after the verb). If they dont know, get them to look at the Grammar notes on transitive and intransitive
verbs on pages 27 and 31.
Answers:

Get students to write example sentences in their notebooks using all of the above. Monitor them as they work to check they
are using the verbs correctly.
