Exodus 33:1223 ; 34:19
In the wilderness of Midian at Mount Sinai, God tells Moses to cut
two stone tables, so God may write on them. Thus begins the permanent
record of God's revelation to humanity. Three thousand years and three
hundred thousand words later let the readers who desire to explore the
world of the Hebrew Scripture, the Old Testament, begin their quest with
this earthy exchange between God and Moses there in the desert.
The revelation of God's goodness () accompanies the origin of
the record of Hebrew Scripture. Moses asks to know God, and God
indulges Moses and us. God proclaims His goodness (), His
character, to Moses as compassionate and gracious, slow to anger,
abounding in loyal love and faithfulness, keeping loyal love for a
thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin, yet not
acquitting the guilty, observing the sins of the parents before their
children and grandchildren. This character statement underlies the story
of Hebrew Scripture, God's deeds with Israel and humanity.
In this pivotal moment of theological history, Moses desperately
insisted upon knowing God. Indeed, overwhelming circumstances
demanded their collaboration. The situation, leading Israel's reluctant
children, challenged both Moses and God and strained their relationship.
When God offered success in His absence, Moses recognized that
relationship with God was the goal. Moses desired God's presence with
Israel's children more than a successful journey or prosperity in the land,
and he experienced God's self-revelation.
From the beginning to the end of Hebrew Scripture, the revelation of
God's goodness underlies the movement of the story and echoes in the
words of the characters. And it starts with a developing friendship and a
personal conversation on the mountain.
