A Scientometric Portrait of Professor M. P. Satija
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
N. K. Swain
1. Introduction
To what follows the authors speaks about scientometric study of publications of Prof.
M.P. Satija. Prof. Satija, the name is nearly synonymous with GN! "Guru Nanak e#
!ni#ersity$ amon% the &'S "&ibrary and 'nformation Science$ professionals in 'ndia.
Prof. M. P. Satija, the blue(eyed teacher has taken the name of GN! in %eneral and &'S
profession in particular to such a hei%ht that only le%ends can do this. )e is outstandin%
amon% *rd %eneration of &'S teachers after S. +. +an%anathan and ,rishan ,umar by
#irtue of his persuasi#e writin%s.
)ere publications are analysed by year, domain, collaboration trend, citation pattern of
his writin%s, channels of communication used alon% with other important features of his
publication style. As ,ademani, ,umbar and Surwase opine, -the result indicate that
temporal #ariations of his producti#ity to be a role model for the youn%er %eneration to
follow, " ,ademani, ,umbar and Surwase .//0$. Till the compilation of this study he has
*10 publications to his credit in #arious key areas of library and information science.
The study is structurally different from other bio%raphical or biobiblio%raphical pattern as
it takes the readers to see the trend in writin% patterns which has been calculated
scientifically. This type of study is normally made under the caption of -bibliometric2 or
-scientometric2. So the author chooses to use the later one. There is a reason to belie#e in
studies of this nature. 'n normal course studies are conducted on the Nobel laureates,
foundin% fathers of specialised field of study, etc. Sometimes the credit and authenticity
lies in citin% the materials written by those scholars.

The specialised writin%s of these scholars further associate them in specialised domains.
As in the concludin% part of the studies this author remarks Prof. M. P. Satija as a
+an%anathan scholar. 5urther these types of studies are branded in a different caption, if
we ha#e a cursory look into the literature. Some e#idences are found -biobibliometric
term was used first time by S. ,. Sen and S. ,.Gan "Sen and Gan$. 5urther there are
numerous studies conducted by 6.S. ,adamani, 7.&.,alyani, A himan, M.M An%adi ,
6.,. Sen. These e8amples add authenticity to this study.
Many a times it is obser#ed that these studies are carried out as a token of lo#e for the
scholar chosen for study. As Sonwane and 7aishna# opine in one of their similar work
-as a token of respect to the renowned information professional who is acclaimed as an
educationist par e8cellence, information technolo%ists 9in the field of library and
information Science. "Sonwane and 7aisna# .//0 p.:/$. ;ndorsin% the abo#e #iew, the
author herewith shows a token of affection for a scholar who has de#oted his entire life
for the concern of &'S profession.

The h(inde8 is an inde8 that @uantifies both the actual scientific producti#ity and the
apparent scientific impact of a scientist. The inde8 is based on the set of the scientistSs
most cited papers and the number of citations that they ha#e recei#ed in other peopleSs
publications. The inde8 can also be applied to the producti#ity and impact of a %roup of
scientists, such as a department or uni#ersity or country. The inde8 was su%%ested by

SI h(inde8 is the result of the balance between the number of publications and the
