This one in Hei- mertingen features corrugated bre cement sheets that are of a rusty brown rather than a light colour, which makes it stand out wi- thout bragging. The bre cement sheets are storey-high, and even the entire roof surface between eaves and ridge consists of only two rows of corrugated sheets. There are no spe- cial proles at the gable and no gutters along the eaves. In both cases a narrow overhang takes care of rainwater drainage. Yet optically those few millimetres do not look like a genu- ine roof overhang. Its very reduction to what is essential makes this a welcoming, friendly house built to a very tight budget. Architects SoHo Architektur, Alex Ngele, Mem- mingen, Germany. It is a familiar pattern we all know from price labels: alter- nating black and white stripes that represent binary numbers. In this case the stripes are 100, 200, 300, 500 and 600 mm wide. The architects chose ve distinct patterns which, when also rotated through 180 degrees, produced ten different panel patterns for use, each of them 1.2 metres wide and 2.5 or 2.64 metres high. They consist of two layers, namely a coloured 7.5 mm thick bre cement panel made up of individual strips glued to a base sheet and visibly xed to a metal sub- frame. On its street frontage it features the snappy uorescent lettering 'cub' j'. In or- der to make it stand out from its nondescript environs and give the young people a place with which they can identify, the architects de- cided to break out of the colourless normality of the surroundings. Defying verticality, two of the faades are tilted, and the lower edge of the bre cement cladding runs parallel to the slope of the monopitch roof. So as to add to this somewhat cheeky ippancy, eye-catching metal cones have been used at the corners where the open joints intersect. What is now a concert hall used to be the chteaus former riding stables. This is an interesting example of the harmonious fusion of old and new. Retaining the historic plinth with its round arched windows, the architects placed a cloche on top whose outer shell is clad with bre cement panels. The width of the panels corresponds to that of the old wind ows. But the height of these horizontal bands increases towards the top, and so their distance to the wall varies irregularly which, in combination with the continuous bre cement cornices between these bands, lends the longitudinal elevations a lively, three- dimensional appearance. The cubic extension has acoustics associations, too. The oor of the auditorium was lowered so as to limit the overall height of the exterior. The white cubes feature few but ne- vertheless notable highlights, such as the strip windows and the full-height, sand coloured bre cement cladding of the faade in between the two entrances. So as to provide a contrast to the homogeneous render of the cubes it is composed of vertical trapezoidal shaped panels whose dark joints suggest a delicate yet unmistakable surface structure. One unique feature of this building is hid- den from sight: This is the only nine-storey residential building worldwide that is of pure timber construction. The walls consist of crosswise glue-bonded plywood components, prefabricat ed at the manufacturer's complete with window openings. Lightweight coloured bre cement panels make up the outer skin. And here is another unique feature, this time open to view: in order to enliven the faades appearance the architects have sought to imitate the shade patterns created by nearby trees and, inspired by paintings by Gerhard Richter, so the architects say, have transpo- sed those subtle nuances of colour onto the 5000 bre cement panels. Down, Northern Ireland Photos Hackett Hall McKnight The neighbours of this elegant house sump- tuous villas and mature trees all date from the time of Queen Victoria. To pay tribute to them in the language of todays architecture was the architects intent. Instead of modern wide glass frontages there are upright window formats; a playful annex recalls the then popular summer pavilions, and a plain, dark painted ground f loor elevation now takes the place of the im- pressive plinth of the day. The house is a straightforward cuboid struc- ture measuring some 14 by 8 metres. Walking towards the entrance one might easily overlook the buildings three-storey height. Its pitched roof is covered with blue-black coloured fibre cement slates, and a few skylights serve to illu- minate the stairs and corridors but are no dis- traction for the onlooker. And, last but not least, the eaves: features such as box gutters, metal f lashing and recessed window lintels of fair- faced concrete, functional as they are, all recall Victorian details translated into a modern, more restrained idiom. Outwardly this is a quiet house that never- theless allows itself some extravagance within, for example the first f loor parlour with its double-height ceiling and its very own stairs. The garage is integrated into the house, and not without reason. A separate garage would be seen as little short of a breach of style: in Queen Victorias days most people got by without an automobile. At the rear of the complex the canti levered accommodation boxes project far beyond the line of the faade, whilst continuous concrete string courses provide scale and articu- late the horizontality of the building. A breath- taking sight, impressive in the sheer perfection of its compo sition, but in no way overbearing. What makes this massive architectural complex so persuasive, a complex that shows no trace of superiority despite its size, is the sheer pragmatism of its design. Patients - some 300 out-patients and 70 in-patients every day as well as staff and visitors can easily find their bearings inside this enormous building. Be- sides, it offers real spatial quality. Structural aspects are always subordinate to the overall concept. For example, the three boxes mentio- ned above, the patients rooms, do not betray outwardly any essential structural features so as to preserve the macro architectonic characteri- stics. That also goes for the accurately fashioned openings wherever they were necessary. The gym is a special case. Although the architects again opted for faade cladding with fibre ce- ment in natural grey they chose larger formats in preference to the small, elongated formats used elsewhere. Constructively the reinforced concrete ske- leton offers great f lexibility for interior work. Fair-faced concrete surfaces, strong colours to remember, and exemplary detail of finish make this massive building a great piece of ar- chitecture on the outside and a very agreeable place within, a model not only for convalescent homes. The lower edge of the fibre cement faade cladding on the cantilevered accommodation boxes was intended to be continuous and to keep to the same height all round. The determining factor here was the thickness of the re- inforced concrete structure plus lining that was required for the projecting boxes. On their longitudinal sides as detailed here for the courtyard elevation a supplemen- tary frame attached to the concrete f loor was required to ensure that the lower edge could be brought down to the same level as the rest of the structure. Yet its shape is anything but standard and stands as a unique, individualistic structure. If one approaches Steenokkerzeel from the south, one is suddenly struck by this vision of a perplexing object, suggestive of a ship gliding through the hilly landscape. But it turns out to be a wedge-shaped building situated along the national highway between the airport and the town. (Quotation taken from a company prospectus.) The support structure is based on a grid of 6 x 6 metres that runs parallel to one of the long- itudinal elevations and is obliquely intersected on the opposite side. This economical solution also allows f lexibility in the use of office f loors despite the buildings unconventional shape. The roof edge is not horizontal, which suits the building. However, that was not the main design consideration, and the real reason for its shape is functional: A level f lat roof was unac- ceptable since it might have interfered with the radar systems of the nearby airport. Rather than hide the unavoidable folded roof behind a pa- rapet, the architects decided to instead make it stand out as a feature to enhance the buildings dynamic contours. The faade material is fibre cement slates arranged in a diamond pattern, which lends unity to the building stet. There are over 100 windows, all of which keep to the same upright rectangular format and line up along the faade at different intervals. Functional requirements (lighting, access) led to three large recesses, accentuated by a change of colour to a bright yellowy green. The material is the same as on the main faades, but here it is used in the form of large plain panels rather than slates. The buildings main characteristic is its fas- cinating mutual interplay of relaxed composure on the one hand and dynamism on the other. 24 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 32 / 2009 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 32 / 2009 25 Second f loor 2. The new structure, slimmer and taller than the original one, has been built onto the old cellar that could be retained. Like its predecessor it is attached to an existing fire wall to the north but stands proud of an older building to the west. And it is again protected by a conventional pitched roof. The three tall storeys do not look out of place in this densely built up neighbourhood. Storey-high fibre cement panels make up the fa- ade cladding all round, and the equally storey- high windows are protected by folding shutters made of the same fibre cement panels fixed to aluminium frames. Narrow slits in the shutters ensure sufficient ventilation. The roof is also covered with the same large-scale panels of dark brown fibre cement. The roof shape was, of course, a stipulation laid down by the building regulations for the historic city centre of Augs- burg. But there is no indication of regret that a f lat roof was not possible. Indeed, the traditio- nal shape of a ridge roof is a respectful and fit- ting complement to the otherwise deliberately modern appearance of this house. It is not inde- cision that has let to this ambivalence of tradi- tion and modernism but the firm belief that old and new can stand side by side and complement each other. Besides, the faultless accessories are not only aesthetically pleasing but ensure, above all, that the house is protected from possible damage. Notwithstanding a certain sense of estrangement, the new building fits well into its neighbourhood and, without causing offence, breathes new life into this cobbled street. 30 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 32 / 2009 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 32 / 2009 31 Ground f loor Erdgeschoss Rez-de-chausse 1 : 200 Cross section Querschnitt Coupe transversale 1 : 200 First f loor 1. The architect was against the idea of 'villa' and in favour of 'shed', as he himself admits; and he has carried this idea through to the last detail. The building is a stan- dard steel-framed construction as is commonly used for sheds. Roof and faades are clad with the same corrugated fibre cement sheets from ground to ridge. Not only did that satisfy the lo- cal planning requirements but it also suited the clients expectations regarding living space and comfort. This classic example of a ridge roof house is based on a well thought-out ground plan and offers high quality in living standards. Viewed from outside, the buildings unmis- takable label reads 'private house' rather than 'shed', and that is largely due to its individuali- stic openings. Standing without a plinth, it suits this landscape, and the roof with its manda- tory 45 degree slope is equally fitting, without looking contrived. Besides, the fibre cement envelope, almost abstract in appearance due to its total lack of visible accessories, proved very economical. Neither architect nor client wanted any such ornamental features, which makes the house look very self-assured. The building is stripped down to its shell in order to upgrade both its interior and the envelope to meet modern standards. In ad- dition to extensive interior work it is given new exterior thermal insulation and a new faade of fibre cement panels. The existing balconies are converted to enclosed bays, and the old f lat roof is used to receive the buildings services which are then protected by a new roof on top. However, the changes that such a building has to undergo during restoration and refur- bishment are always different and sometimes, as in this case, quite considerable. Using the same fibre cement panels throughout for all fa- ades including the new intermediate link and the refurbished extension has endowed the building with a new identity and an air of self- evidence. Exterior elevations are no longer seen as heterogeneous components as was the case before but, despite several individually fashio- ned openings, as a coherent entity, owing to the buildings new envelope of fibre cement panels. Last but not least it is the roof with its one-metre overhang that has put paid to the buildings for- mer clumsy appearance. The two colours cho- sen for the fibre cement panels, black and white, also underline that change. Edinburgh, Scotland, Project architect: Chris Jones Location The Lifestyle Academy, Newcastle College, Scotswood Road, Newcastle, England Photos Chris Gascoigne/VIEW (pp 44, 47); Marley Eternit (p 49) A building to perk your curiosity, because it is enigmatic: Is this a hall with some control centre above? Is it divided into storeys, and if so how many? Two, three, five? Still, it looks like a conventionally shaped volume, a standard cuboid block with a distinc- tive but equally conventional cantilevered top f loor. No gimmicks with converging verticals, wild window formats or a mishmash of trendy materials. Indeed, this non-scale ambiguity, as the architects call it, derives from the same size fibre cement panels used all round measu- ring 3.10 x 1.25 metres, and only two different window sizes. Yet those standard basics pro- duce nothing like a uniform grid but instead a playful faade pattern that nevertheless follows precise rules: there are eight different positions for the window openings, always cut into the fibre cement panels along one or even two of their edges. That offers 16 variations. In addi- tion there are the panels with no cut-outs. Once one has grasped this simple but in- genious design secret one is able to decipher the faades more easily. Hidden behind these 'dancing' windows are the three storeys of a vo- cational college, an educational establishment similar to a technical college or high school but with a wider choice of subjects and a new name: 'Lifestyle Academy'. The curriculum offers, for example, tuition in cookery, restaurant and hotel services, training as a beautician or as an attend ant in gyms and fitness studios, in other words careers for the service industry. The trai- ning facilities were intended to replicate real- life working environments, which would have been difficult to realise behind an amorphous, conventionally glazed elevation. Based on that specific brief the architects created a landmark building with its own distinct identity which at the same time makes an excellent contribution to a campus that is still being developed. 46 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 32 / 2009 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 32 / 2009 47 3rd f loor 3. How- ever, that basic concept has not been allowed to become manifest in a deliberate statement or a monument but has led to a most practical, inter- esting and agreeable house that has an air of self-evidence about it. The central living space incorporates a win- ter garden which opens onto a partially enclosed patio. The other rooms are grouped around to form a square. They are protected by a grassed roof with minimal pitch and externally clad with larch boarding. The relatively small win- dow openings are surrounded by fibre cement panels, including those at the turret, and the dark reveals stand slightly proud of the surface to look like picture frames. The turret sits on top of the north-facing entrance and ancillary rooms and contains the studio and a room with a view. By contrast to those of the single-storey block, its exterior walls are clad with dark fibre cement slates. The structural framework is a conventional mix of brickwork and reinforced concrete. Shape and materials are the fundamentals of the buildings energy saving scheme. There are solar collectors on part of the south facing glazed winter garden, and the equally south- looking turret is the ideal location for photovol- taics to be installed at a later date. 52 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 32 / 2009 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 32 / 2009 53 Ground f loor Erdgeschoss Rez-de-chausse 1 : 300 2nd f loor 2.
