1.0 SCOPE
1 .1 This specification covers the general requirements for materials, design,
fabrication, inspection, testing and supply of Glass-Reinforced Plastic
(GRP) tanks for installation at the Facility in Kuwait.
1.2 This specification compliments the data sheets for the equipment, in
which the operating conditions and other requirements are listed in
detail.
1.3 The supply of GRP tanks shall fully comply wi th all relevant contractual
requirements specified in the Scope of Work and Technical Specification
of the Contract.
2.0 STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS
2.1 GRP tanks shall conform in design, materials and performance, except
where otherwise specified, wi th the current issue and amendments of
the following prevailing on the effective data of the Contract:

All equipment and accessories covered by this specification shall
comply wi t h all relevant specifications of which the following are
specifically referenced in this specification:

2.2 Compliance wi t h this specification shall not relieve the Contractor of its
responsibility t o supply equipment suited t o meet the specified service
conditions and applicable regulations.
2.3 Where conflicts exist between this specification and other Drawings,
standards, codes and specifications, the most stringent shall be applied.
3.0 SERVICE CONDITIONS
3.1 The GRP tanks shall be suitable for continuous operation without
degradation at a desert location under high ambient temperatures and
humidity. The atmosphere at the Facility is generally dusty and
corrosive and may contain traces of hydrogen sulphide.
3.2 GRP tanks shall in all respects be suitable for continuous operation in the
service conditions stated in the Engineering Group Specification entitled
"Basic Design Criteria" (Number 01 5-AH-1 001).
4.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 General
4.1 .I The following information shall be provided by the Contractor for
Company review and approval:
a. Values of design factors K1 t o K5, inclusive.
b. Type of resin and resin filler.
c. Details of corrosive barrier or internal lining.
d. Main dimensions of vessel.
e. Type and number of reinforcement layers.
f. Resin cure systems and whether elevated temperature
curing is included.
g . Hydrostatic test pressure.
h. Empty weight.

4.2.1 Glass Reinforcement
a. Chemical surface mat shall be type C glass, 0.25 - 0.5 mm
thick wi th a powder binder compatible wi th the resin used
except where the process fluid attacks glass in which case
a synthetic veil shall be used.

b. Chopped strand mat (CSM) shall be type E glass, 450-600
g1sq.m wi th a powder binder compatible wi t h the resin
used.
c. Woven roving shall be type E glass, 530-800 g1sq.m wi th
a silane-type finish compatible wi th the resin used.

d. Filament winding roving shall be type E glass continuous
filament strand wi th a silane-type finish compatible wi th
the resin used.
4.2.2 Resins and Additives

The type of resin shall be specified by the Contractor and
submitted for review and approval by the Company.

Curing system procedures shall be submitted t o the
Company for review and approval.
Thixotropic agents may be added in accordance wi th the
recommendations of the Company-Approved resin
Manufacturer as long as they do not interfere wi th visual
examination of the laminate.
Ultraviolet (UV) inhibitors shall be used t o prevent
degradation of laminates.
Paraffin wax shall be used t o prevent air inhibition of cure.
Suitability of the wax shall be verified by the Company-
Approved resin Manufacturer.
Pigments shall be added t o the final resin coat. See
paragraph 9.1 of this specification.
Flange bolting shall consist of alloy steel studbolts wi th hexagon nuts.
All studbolts shall be threaded for the full length and shall protrude by
t wo full threads beyond the nut. Washers shall be provided under all
nuts and bolt heads.
4.4 Gaskets
Gasket material shall be as specified on the vessel data sheet.
4.5 Chemical Liner
4.5.1 Thermoplastic liners shall be used where stated on the vessel data
sheet.
4.5.2 Where thermoplastic liners are not used, a smooth, wrinkle-free
resin-rich surface shall be provided as an internal corrosion
resistant barrier. The resin-rich layers shall contain not less than
90% resin and shall be reinforced wi t h one or t wo layers or type
C glass or synthetic veil depending on the nature of the process
fluid. A backing layer in accordance wi th BS 4994 is also
required.
4.5.3 In all cases the corrosion barrier shall be stated on the tank data
sheet and approved by the Company before manufacturing
begins.
4.6 Description of Laminate
4.6.1 Structural Reinforcement
a. The structural laminate shall provide adequate mechanical
strength t o withstand the design loadings.
b. The laminate shall be constructed from CSM, woven
rovings or continuous filaments alone or in combination.
The structural laminate shall include:
a. An inner layer consisting of three layers of CSM (450
g1sq.m) in contact wi t h the chemical liner.
b. An outer layer consisting of t wo layers of CSM (450-600
glsq .m) .
c. The minimum thickness of the structural laminate shall be
5 mm.
4.7 Exterior Surface
The exterior surface shall be a resin-rich layer reinforced wi th type C
glass veil.

The final gel coat shall be applied t o the exterior surface after final
inspection. The gel coat shall contain a UV inhibitor, pigment and fire-
retardant as appropriate and paraffin wax. Suitability of the wax
addition shall be verified by the Company-Approved resin Manufacturer.

5.0 DESIGN
5.1 Design Code

All tanks shall be designed and manufactured in accordance wi th either
BS 4994 or ASME Section X.
5.2 Operating and Design Conditions

5.2.1 Operating and design conditions shall be as stated on the tank
data sheet.
5.2.2 Tanks shall be designed for the most severe combinations of
conditions which may occur during erection, operation or testing.

5.2.3 The allowable unit loads permitted in the design code shall not be
increased on the basis of the temporary nature of some loading
conditions.

5.2.4 Tanks shall be designed for a 20-year lifespan.
5.3 Pressure Uplift
All tanks containing internal pressure shall be checked for uplift. Holding
down bolts shall be provided where necessary.
5.4 Desinn Cycles
All tanks shall be designed for 1000 cycles operation (i.e., K4 = 1 -1, for
BS 4994) unless otherwise specified.
5.5 Wind Loads and Applied Loads
5.5.1 Tanks shall be self-supporting and designed t o withstand the full
specified wind loading based on the maximum vertical projection
of exposed surface, which shall include insulation, platforms,
ladders, pipework, overhead vapour lines and other equipment
associated wi t h the tanks.
5.5.2 Unless otherwise specified, wind loads shall be calculated in
accordance wi t h BS CP3, Chapter V, Part 2, wi th the wind
velocity of 45 ml s at a height of 10 m from the grade level.

5.5.4 Eccentric moments induced by the weight of equipment
supported from the tank together wi th resultant moments due t o
piping thrusts shall be additive t o wind moments.
5.5.5 Dynamic loads shall be taken into account where appropriate.
5.6 Nozzle Loads
5.6.1 The Contractor shall advise the Company-Approved Manufacturer
of the external forces or moments acting on tank nozzles. The
Contractor shall be responsible for ensuring that the tank design
is adequate t o withstand such loads. In order t o avoid damage at
site all nozzles are t o be capable of withstanding the weight of a
man (800 N).
5.6.2 In the case of proprietary packages which include tanks and
piping, the Contractor shall ensure that neither the piping system
nor the tanks are overstressed. Copies of design calculations
shall be submitted t o the Company for review and approval.
5.7 In no circumstances shall the thickness of the corrosion barrier or the
thermoplastic lining be included in the thickness calculated t o withstand
the design conditions or loadings.
5.8 Maximum stress in hold-down bolts shall be 103 N/mm2 based on the
root area.
5.9 Recommended bolting torques shall be provided by the Company-
Approved tank Manufacturer and shown on the manufacturing Drawing.
6.0 CONSTRUCTION
6.1 Flannes
6.1 . I Unless otherwise specified, flange dimensions for bolting shall
conform t o ASME 81 6.5 Class 150'. Instrument flanges shall be
class 300'.
6.1.2 Bolt holes for flanges shall straddle the horizontal and vertical
centre lines in elevation, and the northlsouth centre lines in plan
unless otherwise stated.

6.1.3 Recommended bolting torques shall be provided by the Company-
Approved tank Manufacturer and shown on the manufacturing
Drawings.
6.2 Nozzles

6.2.1 Unless otherwise agreed, the minimum nozzle connection on any
tank shall be 50 mm.
6.2.2 Pad-type connections shall not be permitted.

6.2.3 Nozzle backing flange thicknesses shall be per Table 14 of BS
4994, 10 bar rating.
6.2.4 Nozzles 100-mm nominal bore (NB) and below shall be supported
by plate-type gussets.

6.3.1 All tanks shall be provided wi th at least one manway except
where the dimensions of the tank do not permit entry into the
tank.
6.3.2 All manways shall be 24-in. NB except where otherwise agreed.
Where smaller manways are permitted, they shall in no case be
less than 500-mm internal diameter (ID).
6.3.3 Where no manway is provided, the tank shall be provided wi th
suitable inspection openings, so situated that all internal surfaces
may be conveniently cleaned and inspected and internal fittings
dismantled.
6.3.4 All manways, handholes and other blanked off nozzles shall be
furnished complete wi th cover, flanges, bolting and gaskets.
6.3.5 Blank covers between 200-mm NB and 600-mm NB, inclusive,
shall be provided wi th handles and a lifting lug.
6.3.6 A davit arm or hinge shall be provided where the weight of the
cover and flange exceeds 35 kg (751b).
6.4 lnternals (Where Applicablel
6.4.1 Removable internals shall be designed t o pass through the tank
manways. For tanks below 900-mm ID, internals shall be
designed t o permit removal without internal access, where
possible.

6.4.2 All internals shall be self-draining and shall be designed such that
they cannot be loosened by vibration (e.g., use lock nuts or lock
washers).
6.4.3 All internals shall be supplied and installed by the Company-
Approved tank Manufacturer unless otherwise stated.

6.5 Supports
6.5.1 Flat-bottomed vertical tanks shall be fully supported over the
entire bottom by a smooth and continuous surface. A soft
surface, e.g., sandlbitumen or bitumen felt on a smooth concrete
pad, shall be used. Protrusion greater than 3 mm shall not be
permitted. The use of pressure grouting shall not be permitted.

6.5.2 Cut-outs for bottom drain nozzles and sumps shall be
incorporated.
6.5.3 Horizontal tanks shall be supported on t wo saddles.

6.5.4 Vertical tanks shall be supported on legs, brackets or skirts where
approved by the Company.

6.5.5 Skirt access openings, vents and pipe sleeves shall be provided
in accordance wi t h design code. All openings shall be reinforced
as required t o compensate for the loss of material at these points.
6.5.6 Hold-down brackets shall include provision for shims t o be placed
between the underside of the bracket and the support pad.
6.5.7 Hold-down bolts shall be specified in multiples of four. The
minimum size shall be M20.
6.5.8 In all cases the Contractor shall check the strength of the tank
supports, taking into account the operating conditions, site
hydraulic testing, wind, seismic and eccentric loads as
appropriate.
6.6 Attachments
6.6.1 Each tank shall be provided wi th a nameplate in accordance wi th
codes requirements.
6.6.2 The Company-Approved tank Manufacturer shall furnish and
attach all insulation support rings, pipe supports, platform and

ladder clips, lifting lugs and other attachments as and where
required by the appropriate tank data sheet.
6.6.3 Vertical tanks shall be provided wi th permanent lifting lugs.
7.0 FABRICATION
7.1 Chemical Liner
7.1 .I The full chemical liner shall be applied t o all interior surfaces of
the tank including blank flanges, etc.
7.1.2 Tank internals shall have the full chemical liner applied t o all
surfaces in contact wi t h the process fluid or vapour.
7.2 Thermoplastic Linings
7.2.1 All welds shall be positioned so that they miss nozzle openings by
a minimum of 50 mm.
7.2.2 Graphite powderlresin paste shall be applied behind all welds t o
provide a permanent earth path for spark testing. Permanent
metal foils shall not be permitted.
7.2.3 All welders shall be qualified t o Company requirements before
manufacturing commences.
7.3 Laminate Lay-up
7.3.1 The chemical liner including any backing layers required under
paragraph 4.5.3 shall be laid up by hand.
7.3.2 The structural layer may be laid up by hand (CSM and/or woven
rovings) or by machine-controlled filament winding.
7.3.3 Adjacent layers of woven rovings shall not be permitted.
7.3.4 The use of machine-controlled spray application of chopped
rovings in lieu of CSM is prohibited unless agreed in writing wi th
the Company. When spray application is agreed to, then:
a. It shall be restricted t o the structural laminate only.
b. The inner layer of the structural laminate shall be laid up by
hand.
7.3.5 Hand-controlled spray application of chopped rovings is
prohibited.
7.3.6 No more than 6 mm of laminate shall be laid up between
exotherm stages.

7.3.7 Where a filament-wound structural laminate is used, the chemical
barrier shall be fully cured before winding commences.
7.3.8 Full details of the laminate construction shall be shown on the
manufacturing Drawings. Exotherm stages shall be clearly
indicated.

7.4 Fabrication Details
7.4.1 Main seams shall be generally in accordance wi t h BS 4994, Fig.
18(c) or 19(a).

7.4.2 Nozzles shall be attached in accordance wi th BS 4994, Fig. 20(b),
(c) or (f). In the case of Fig. 20(f), the internal pad of lining
material must be fitted. Attachment details shall be clearly
shown on manufacturing Drawings.
7.4.3 Flanges shall be of moulded construction and in accordance wi th
BS 4994, Fig. 24 Type I. Glass reinforcement in the stub and
hub of the flange shall be continuous.

7.4.4 Flange faces (front and back) shall be smooth and flat.
Tolerances shall be in accordance wi th BS 4994, paragraph
30.2.6.

7.4.5 If flange faces are machined, the full chemical liner shall be
reinstated. Thermoplastic linings shall have a minimum finished
thickness of 2 mm.
7.4.6 All cylindrical tanks, lined or unlined, shall have a knuckle radius
at the shell-to-base junction.
7.4.7 The minimum knuckle radius shall be 40 mm for tanks less than
2000-mm diameter or 75 mm for larger tanks.
7.4.8 Bases of flat-bottomed tanks shall be flat t o within the lesser of
Dl 1 30 or 25 mm (where D = tank diameter).
7.5 Curing
7.5.1 All tanks shall be post cured in accordance wi th the
recommendations of the Company-Approved resin Manufacturer.
7.5.2 Full details of the curing procedures shall be submitted t o the
Company for their review and approval (including the Barcol
hardness values t o be achieved).
7.5.3 Thermoplastic-lined tanks shall not be subjected t o an elevated
temperature cure.

7.6 Tolerances
Tolerances shall be the more stringent of those specified in the design
code or the tank data sheet.

8.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING
8.1 Testing

8.1.1 All tanks shall be inspected and tested in accordance wi th
BS 4994 together wi th any additional tests as may be called for
in this specification and the tank data sheet.
8.1.2 All tests shall be completed before the application of the
pigmented gel coat.

8.1.3 All tanks wi t h thermoplastic linings shall be spark tested in
accordance wi t h BS 4994, paragraph 35.

8.1.4 All tests shall be carried out in the presence of the Company.
8.2 Visual Examination
All laminates shall be visually inspected during manufacture. The
acceptability of defects shall be in accordance wi th BS 4994, Table 16.
Repair procedures shall be approved by the Company.
8.3 Hydraulic Test
8.4.1 All tanks shall be subjected t o a hydraulic test at the approved
works in accordance wi th the requirements of BS 4994. The
pressure shall be held for a minimum of 1 hour. The test pressure
shall be approved by the Company.
8.4.2 Unless otherwise agreed all tanks containing liquids whose
specific gravity exceeds 1.0 shall be tested so that the
hydrostatic head produced in service is reproduced in the test.
8.4.3 Gaskets used during hydraulic testing shall be of the same type
and material as the service gaskets. Service bolts shall be fitted
for testing.
8.4 Vacuum Test
All tanks designed for vacuum shall be subjected t o a vacuum test at
1.3 times design vacuum pressure but not more than full vacuum. The
vacuum shall be held for a minimum of 1 hour.
9. 0 FINISHING
9.1 Unless otherwise stated, all external GRP surfaces shall be pigmented
light blue.
9.2 All carbon steel surfaces, whether or not encased in GRP shall be
cleaned of all rust by sandblasting and hot dip galvanised. Painting
requirements shall be as per the Engineering Group Specification entitled
"Shop and Field Painting" (Number 01 5-XH-1005).
9.3 All tanks shall have the warning "Plastic Equipment Handle wi t h Care"
stencilled in t wo places in letters at least 150 mm high.
10.0 MISCELLANEOUS
10.1 Service gaskets (including one spare gasket) and bolting for all blanked
nozzles, manways, body flanges shall be supplied.
10.2 Unless otherwise indicated on the mechanical data sheet, the shop-test
gaskets shall be re-fitted for transit wi th the service bolts.
10.3 Spares, where required, and service gaskets shall be clearly tagged wi th
the tank item number and Company order number, and shall be suitably
boxed for transit.
10.4 The tanks shall be provided wi th t wo carbon steel earthing clips, suitably
bonded into the tank shell. The clips shall be drilled t o accept M I 0
bolting.
