Maintenance Procedure & Safety:
Module: The main maintenance task for modules is the
cleaning of the glass area to remove excessive dirt. It
should be cleaned when they are not excessive hot. Vis-
ual inspection of the modules required to check for de-
fects such as cracks, chips and discolouration. If any
obvious defects are found, note their location in the sys-
tem logbook, so these can be monitored in the future in
case further deterioration affects the modules output.
Module Mounting Frame: The condition of the module mounting frame should
also be noted. Observe the modules mounting bolts and
ensure that the frame and modules are firmly secured.
Battery: Safety when working with batteries must ac-
count for the following hazards:
Sulphuric acid is corrosive, Hydrogen gas is explosive
and battery short circuit current is very large and can
burn/melt people and objects.
Maintenance includes measuring & recording SG, cleaning, topping up electrolyte
and checking tightness/cleanliness of connections. Appropriate safety measures &
equipment must be used including electrical isolation of loads and PV array, ade-
quate ventilation and the use of safety face shields, gloves, aprons, boots & insu-
lated tools.
Inverter: Check that the inverter is functioning correctly by observing LED indi-
cators, metering and other display on the inverter. Check if the inverters stand-by
-mode is functioning correctly. Check the control function for remote starting of
diesel generator is operating.
Charge Controller: Check the functioning of the controller
to ensure that any indicators or meters are correctly operating
for the various mode.

Installation Procedure of Standalone Solar PV System

Align mounts on top
of rafters, and then pre
-drill with a pilot bit to
avoid splitting the raf-
ters. The rafters can be
found with a stud
finder. Use a chalk
line or laser sight to
keep the mounts in a
straight line.

Secure the mounts to
the roof with stainless
steel lag bolts. The
roof on this house was
brand new but looked sloppy, so a new layer was applied around the mounts.

Metal flashing's were placed
over the mounts and the layer of
roofing was hot-mopped around
the mounts. Metal rails are se-
cured to the posts with 3/8'
stainless steel bolts.

Next we install the solar panels
and connect them into an array.

The final step is to run the con-
duit to connect the panels to the
inverter.
