When it is not possible to have doors facing each other on opposite

sides, provide for a window instead on one of the sides. This window can
be at the centre of the wall.
Where the window is wider than the door, have them facing each other
on opposite walls. The window can extend to either side along the wall
length.
Where there are two windows each on the four walls of a room, place
them at either end of each wall face. For example, corresponding to
Eastern Northeast is a window to Eastern Southeast, and so on.
Almirahs can be placed either in between or on both sides of the window
on a wall.
Staircase
The design and location of a staircase in a house follows the functional
requirements of its planning. There are however some points that you
may do well to bear in mind.
The internal staircase can be located in any room excepting the NE or
SE one. Keep the Eastern wall free of the step line; maintain a gap of at
least 3 between the two.
Keep the direction of movement along the steps
From North to South or,
From East to West when the steps abut or lead away from a
Southern wall.
For any linear staircase, steps can proceed either from East to
West or from North to South. The stops can also thereafter turn in
any direction.
Spiral Staircases When a house faces East-West in the
southeast or when it faces North-South in the northwest, a spiral
staircase is recommended. In no instance should a staircase be
provided in northern or eastern northeast.
Well
Take great care in sinking a well or bore well at site. The ideal place is
the Northeast. It can be either square of round in shape below the
ground, but above the ground keep it to a simple circle. Any corner in its
profile may exercise a diagonal effect which is not a desirable feature. Do
keep the floor level of the platform around the well to a lower elevation
that the plinth of the house.

Hearth / Oven/ Gas Stove
The most ideal place for the hearth is the southeastern corner of the
house. In no circumstance should the hearth be located in the northeast.
Use the rooms in southeast and northwest for the kitchen, rather than
those in the east, south, west or north directions. The reason is simple.
Youll have sunlight streaming into the kitchen morning and evening,
keeping your kitchen free from odour and dampness. It also subdues
harmful insects from entering the kitchen. The rays of the sun also help in
preserving vegetables, cooked food and pickles. Truly, an instance of

Pooja Room
The sun is the soul and guiding figure of the practice of Vastu. One
should pray therefore by facing West from the East, oriented in the
resourceful direction of the Sun.
Bedrooms
The bedroom is the Heart of the House, the resting place for the body
and mind, where we spend a good amount of time when at home.
Southwest is the most beneficial of all the directions, the master bedroom
should invariable be located in the southwest. It can be provided in the
south east, and northwest too.
Cupboards
When necessary to have cupboards in bedroom of hall, have them in
eastern wall preferable. When they are a necessity on all sides of the
room, leave the northeastern corner blank.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms are generally constructed either outside the house, as
attached rooms to the bedrooms, or for common usage within the house.
For bathrooms inside the house, eastern and northern rooms are the
most ideal. Attached bathrooms can be towards
East or north of the south western bedrooms.
South of north western bedrooms
West of south eastern bedrooms
Where the bathroom is exterior to the house, the space between the
house and the bathroom should be less than that between the bathroom
and compound wall.
Overhead tank
The overhead tank can be constructed in southwest, northwest or
southeast corners. If an overhead tank is to be provided in the northwest
or southeast, make for a small room in the southwest on the terrace; also
ensuring that the height of the room is more than that of the tank.
If an overhead tank is located to the southwest, any structure of any type,
can be built in any corner of the terrace.
Toilet and septic tank
The septic tank can be sunk in the east or north; avoid having it in any
other direction. The direction of the WC should invariably be to the north
or the south; and never to the east or west.

POOJA
2. Pooja should not be placed at Nairuthi ( Southwest ) corner of the house.
3. Pooja should not be placed at Ishan ( Northeast ) corner of the house,

KITCHEN
1. Kitchen should always placed at Southeast (Agneya)corner of the house.
2. The second best place for the kitchen is Northwest (Vayavya) corner of
the house.

7.The kitchen should be in the south-east portion of the house. The door of
the kitchen should be in the north, east or north-east direction opening

lead to financial problems in the family.

close to each other.
15.The cooking stove should not be visible to the naked eyes from the

16.There should be no leaking taps in the kitchen. This affects the money
flow, and actually water should not be waste at any place including kitchen.
17. Shelves for the storage for grains at south,west and southwest sides
only.
18. In Vastu Shastra its strictly prohibited that do not construct toilets
and pooja-room next to one another.
19. The kitchen should not be directly in front of the main door, try

20. Kitchen should not be placed at northeast corner of the house, if
kitchen is at the North - East direction, it would curtail peace and

28.Exhaust fan should be installed on the eastern wall in the south-east

29. Drinking water may be placed in the north-east; water filter will be
installed in the north east, if required, or it may be placed at northwest
corner.

6. It is best to have the bedrooms in the South, South-West and West. At
no cost should the bed room be built in the North-East, East or North. It is
not good for the house owners health and the financial well being to have

16. The bedrooms of the head of the family should be in the south-west
corner of the west side. If there are more than one floor, the head of the
family should have a bed room on the upper storey in the south-west
corner of the west direction. This room is also good for adult married
children. But under no condition it should be a bedroom of the younger
children. There are clashes and unnecessary quarrels in the house. A
bedroom in the south direction can also be tolerated.
17. While sleeping, make sure that everyone sleeps with his or her head
pointing towards the South corner. North direction should be completely
avoided, as it acts as a source of nightmares and disturbed sleep.

20. The beds should be of good quality wood. They should be solid and
must not be shaky. The mattress should provide good support to the body
while resting. Box beds are ideally not recommended, but due to paucity of
space in houses these days, getting rid of box beds is easier said than
done. Make sure you De-clutter and sort out things kept in the box-beds
from time to time. Shoes and chappals should not be kept under a bed try
to keep the area under the bed, as clean as possible. Your bedroom should
be a place where you can totally relax. Keep objects that remind you of
unfinished tasks out of the room, or at least out of sight. A bedroom should
be aesthetically designed with soothing colors and pictures. Have pleasant
pictures associated with happy memories around you. The foot of the bed
should not directly face the door of the room. The bed should not be placed
under a beam. The South-West area of the bedroom should not be kept

the bedroom.
21. Avoid fixing doors in the South-West of the bedroom, otherwise you will

house. If there is an upper story in the house, the master bedroom should
be on this floor, in the southwest corner. Adult married children can also

24.Bedroom walls should be painted a light rose, dark blue, dark green,

25. One should sleep in his own house with his head facing east or south. If
one is staying in someone else house, or while traveling, he may sleep with
his head at facing west. One should never sleep with his head facing north.

26. Upon rising from bed, the right foot should be placed on the floor first. If
one is to study in the bedroom, the east side should be used. The wardrobe

Never keep the bedroom pitch dark.
28. The bed room flooring should be higher than all the other rooms

30. If the bed room door is not possible to fix at northeast corner, (generally

31. Try not to sleep in direct alignment with sharp corners. Sharp corners
act as energy spears and create stress in the nervous system. There is not
serenity in a room that has sharp corners except by softening them by
placing plants in front of them. You can also try moving your bed away from

34. Windows are good towards Southeast-south or Northwest-west at
Southwest Master Bedroom.

The beds in the children (student) room can be in the southwest portion of
the room and the heads should face in the East or South direction. As the
children tend to spend a lot of time in their rooms try to keep the room free
from sharp edges and pointed nooks. According to Vaastu shastra any type
of pointed thing is going to bring negative energy in the household.
Maximum try to arrange the beds to be their heads to be placed to East, as
this direction is best for the mind development for the children.
Avoid placing a mirror or television directly opposite to the bed. The mirror
and the television set when switched off reflects the bed. If you must have
a mirror and a television in the bedroom then have them on either the left or
right side of the bed.
The furniture in the room should be placed a few inches away from the
walls, as it saves the positive energies of body and mind.
Different Items to be placed at children bedroom:

The door to the childrens bedroom should not be exactly opposite to the
bed. Try having them at a separate angel. This aspect should especially be
kept in mind when going for the architecture of one place.
A television should never be placed in the bedroom, but if it is necessary it
can be placed in north-west of the room. And a computer can be placed in
south-east corner of the room.
In the southeast corner of the childrens room have an up lighter. This
brings in positive energy and good health to the household. Also make sure
that the center of the room is empty. Dont ever put furniture in the center of
the room.
If there has to be small furniture in the childrens room then it should be
kept a few inches away from the wall. This will help in saving the positive

Compound wall is the most important subject in the vastu. Someone have

There is no count for steps, you can place any number of steps as per your
requirement and convenience.
Steps are called with different names in different places. Rung, shed, stairs,
steps, sopana, metlu etc.
If internal staircase may be planned to provid at Northeast room, its not
correct idea.
Suppose a linear staircase is designed either inside the house or outside
the house. Then it should be from east to west or north to south. Then it
may take any direction. First it has to start from North or East only.
If you want to construct the stairs at outside provide in eastern south east,
the eastern compound wall should not be touched. It should be from north
to south and proceed from there towards north from south after the landing.
That will lead to entry into the first floor in an exalted position. When you
are planned to alter the staircase at your house, it is better to approach one
expert vastu consultant.
Sump Plays a important role in vastu shastra, as it gives 100% good or
bad results that to immediately. So every inmates has to observe the sump
where installed in the house or where it is dig.

1. Best place for overhead tank is Southwest portion on top of the house or

2. The next best place for Overhead tank is West direction, if the plot is
male site.
3. If the plot is female site then South direction is also good to place
Overhead tank.
4. At any cost don't place the Overhead tank at Northeast corner of the
house.
5. Don't place towards East direction.

Vastu for Pooja room
Pooja room is a place where we worship God for peace and prosperity.
Ishanya or north-east is governed by God and is an excellent location for
pooja room. Locating Pooja room in north-east brings prosperity, good
health, wealth, happiness and peace of mind. North-east is auspicious for
other reasons. In morning sunrays fall directly from north-east and give us
positive energy.
Location of Pooja Room: North-east is an excellent location for Pooja
room. Pooja room in north quadrant provides good results. You can opt
east, north and north-east for pooja room. Avoid other directions if
possible. Special poojas can be performed in Brahmasthana (center of
house). In big plots, pooja room can be in Brahmasthan (central portion) of
the house. Pooja room should not be inside bed room. It should not be
made above, below or next to toilet or kitchen. It should be on ground floor,
not on first floor or in basement. Avoid Pooja Room under the stairs.

Vastu for Living Room
According to Vastu Shastra living room or drawing room should be located
in east or northdirection. The ideal location of a living room depends on
plot facing. The living room can be in northeast direction for east and
north facing house. The living room can be in northwest for west facing
house. In south facing house, living room can be in southeast.
Where to Place Furniture as per Vastu : The furniture should be placed
in west or south direction. The furniture such as showcase or heavy articles
etc. should be in south or west direction. It should be rectangular or square,
not in oval, circular or odd shape.
Television, A.C and Telephone Place according to Vastu : T.V. should
be placed in southeast direction. Living room vastu opposes to place T.V.
in north-east or south-west corner.
Cooler or A.C should be placed in west or north direction. Avoid A.C or
Cooler in southeast and northwest. Telephone should be placed in East,
North or south-east. It should not be in south-west or the north-west
corners.
Aquarium Placement as per Vastu Directions : Aquariums are beneficial
to place in the North, East and North-East of living room. The faults related
to north-west corner can be corrected by putting an aquarium. Avoid
aquarium in south direction as it draws out positive energies from house.
Painting and Pictures according to Vastu : The use of painting can
create a pleasant environment in the room. Painting of waterfall, rising sun
provides positive energy. Avoid paintings that symbolize death, violence
and negative aspects of life.
Vastu Color Scheme : The color of wall in living room should be white,
yellow, blue or green. Prefer light color over dark colors. Avoid black and
red color in living room.

Location of TV and electronic appliances: Electrical appliances like
fridges should be in south-east direction. Television should not be placed in
the dining room.
While taking food Family members should face east, west or north
directions. Do not face south direction as it creates quarrels among family
members. Its best to face east or west direction while eating.
Lighting: Lights create positive energy. The dcor of dining room should
be arranged according to the mood and taste of the family. Lighting should
create easy and relaxed environment. Candles and lamps give special
effects to any meal. Ceiling lights should fall vertically and mainly focus on
the surface of dining table. Scenery and paintings give positive effect in
dining room.
Window and Door: Window should be placed in north or east side as
compared to south or west side. If the house is located in north direction,
the entrance should be in north direction. If the house is located in east
direction, the face of entrance should be in the east.
If the room is located in south direction, the face of entrance should be in
the South and if it is in north direction, the entrance should be in the
north.Main entrance door and dining room door should not face directly to
each other. Toilet should not be attached to dining room.

Vastu for Bed Room
According to ancient science of directions, Vastu Shastra peace and
harmony reign through bedroom if the room is located in right
direction. A properly located bedroom provides complete relaxation after
a weary day and also brings good things into life. Here are given the facts
which explain complete vastu for bedroom.
Location for Bedroom : Ideally master bedroom should be located in
southern part of the house and all other bedrooms should be located either
towards the East or North of master bedroom. Master bedroom may be
located in south-west of the house. This room should be used by the head
of the family and eldest son of the family. South portion is also
recommended for eldest son bedroom. If there is more than one floor, the
head of the family should have his bed room in south-west direction on first
floor. This bedroom should not be used by young children otherwise
unnecessary quarrels can take place in the house.
A west sided bedroom is good for children. An eastern bedroom can be
used for children. But this room should not be used by newly wed couples
because it can cause unnecessary quarrel between the couple. Teenager
girls should have their bedrooms in north-west direction. The bedroom
should not be constructed in central portion of the house or in basement as
it may lead to mental tension. Also bed room should not be constructed
above porch and kitchen. An attached bathroom can be in north-west or
south-east of bedroom.
Bed Location: The beds should be of good quality wood and metal bed
should be avoided. The bed should be placed in such a way as the foot of
the bed should be in North and does not face the door. It should not touch
walls keeping 2 or 3 inches distance. Avoid placing bed in corners or
under the beam. The space under the bed should be clean and clutter
free. Due to paucity of space modern vastu says to use box bed.
Keep storage space clean and clutter free. Do not keep utensils and metal
in storage space. This may cause mental stress and diseases.
Cabinet Location: Cabinet/Almirah should be placed in south-west of the
room opening towards North. It should be placed leaving south-east,
north-east, south-west, north-west corners and east and north
directions of the room.
Television and Electrical Appliances Location :Avoid television in
bedroom. If you place T.V. in bedroom, it should be kept in south-east of
bedroom. It should never be placed in front of bed as it works like a mirror.
Thus placed mirror is not good for health. Electrical appliances should be
kept in south-east of the room.
Doors and Windows Location :The door of bedroom should be in the
East or the North. Windows in the East and North of the room are
beneficial.
Color Scheme : Color affects our mind and changes the mood. Vastu
recommends light colors. Light colors are better than dark colors. The
color of bedroom should be light rose, pink, blue, yellow and green. Avoid
black and red color in bedroom. Yellow and white marble should not be
used in bedroom.

Mirrors: Do not use mirror in bedrooms. If it can not be avoided, keep it in
such a position that should not reflect your shadow while sleeping. Keep a
curtain on mirror to avoid reflection. To avoid mirrors in bedroom means to
avoid unnecessary quarrels between the couple.
Tips for Vastu Bedroom
As a general rule of vastu, south-west corner of bedroom should not be
left empty. Always keep heavy things, furniture etc. in this portion in every
room.
South-west side of the house and of all rooms inside the house should
always be heavier than the East and north-east side. Maximum open space
should be left in north-east side of the room and house.
Nobodys bedroom should be exactly in the middle of the building.
Some buildings do not get proper east-west and north-south directions.
They have corners only. In bed rooms of such buildings, for getting the
proper direction, one should not put his bed in an oblique position.
As far as possible, the almirah should not be in the bedroom. If it is
necessary, it should be placed in a way leaving the south-east, the north-
east, the south-west and the northwest corners as well as the east and the
north directions.

Vastu for Children Room
According to Vastu, keeping everything in positive direction in
childrens room results in creative thinking and good health because this

Vastu recommends west direction for children's room. The location of
bed should be in south-west portion whereas the head should be in south
or east direction. The door of the room should not be exactly opposite to

Furniture: The location of bed in childrens room is south-west corner. The
furniture should be few inches away from the walls. Almirahs and cabinets
should be located in south or west direction.
TV and Computer: Computer and TV should not be placed in

east corner and computer in north diection of the room.
Study Table: If study table is placed in bedroom, it should be in such
direction that child could face east, north and north-east while

their studies.
The study room should be located in the directions which are considered
auspicious for studies such as East, North or north-east of the house. As
per Vastu, these directions improve the power of concentration while
studying. Make sure that there is no mirror reflection in their room. This
may have effect of doubling their work load. Make sure that the student
does not study under a beam otherwise he or she feels unnecessary
pressure.
Locate Study Table according to Vastu: The placement of study table is
important for concentration. You should place study table facing East or
North. Do make sure that the child should face East or North while
studying. The table should not stick to the wall. There should be open
space in front of child as it augments fresh ideas. The child should have a
solid wall behind him as it signifies support.
The study table should be square or rectangular as per vastu, it should not
be too big or too small. A table of small size can be uncomfortable while
working and a table of big size can affect working capacity of the child.
Placement of Bookshelves as per Vastu :Bookshelves and cabinets
should be placed in the East, North, and North-east directions.
The cabinets should not be placed in the center of room. It is best to

Vastu Tips to Create an Effective Enviornment in Study Room :
The room to be chosen for study should be in the East , North or the
North-East direction of the house. These directions improve the

The head towards east helps in learning whereas the head towards
south helps in maintaining magnetic balance of the body or earth.

Vastu for Bathroom and Toilet
According to bathroom vastu, bathroom should be located in North or
North-Westportion of the house. If bathroom is located in wrong direction, it
can cause health and financial problems. Bathroom should not be in South,
South-East and South-West direction. South sided bathroom can cause
adverse effects on the health of female members.
As per Toilet Vastu, toilet should be located in west or
northwest direction. Avoid construction of toilet at the centre and in the
east, northeast of the house. The toilet seat should be placed in such a way
that the person sitting could face the North or the South. Now a day toilet
combined with bathroom is becoming popular due to lack of space.
Combined bathroom and toilet should be in north-west direction. It should
not be adjacent to Pooja Room, kitchen and under the stairs.
Geyserand other electrical appliances like heater and switchboard should
be installed insouth-east corner of bathroom. Taps and showers are
fixed in north direction. Placing bath tubs in east, west or north-east
direction is good. Wash basin and shower can be either in north-east, north
or east direction. The North is a good direction for vanity mirror.
Water closet should be placed in the West and the South direction of the
toilet. A water closet should be placed near a window or an outer wall.
Exhaust fans are necessary if there is no window in the bathroom. The
slope of bathroom floor should be in the North. It should not to be in south-
west or south-east direction.
Septic tank should be in northwest of the house. It should not be in
south-east, north-east, north or east directions. The tank should be higher
than floor level of the building.
The door of bathroom should be in North or East direction. It should not be
placed in south-west direction. In a bathroom there should be a small and
airy window either in East, West or North direction. If the window is in south
direction, it would have adverse effects on health.
The color of bathroom tiles can be white, sky blue and light blue. It helps in
giving a fresh look to bathroom. Avoid dark colors like black or red. The
slope of floor in bathroom should be towards East or North direction.

Vastu for Kitchen
According to Vastu Shastra, the lord of Agni (Fire) prevails in south-east
direction. So ideally the kitchen should be located in south-east of the
home. The second best option is north-west part of the home. The stove
should be placed in south-east direction of the kitchen so that the cook may
face east direction while cooking.
East quadrant is considered an excellent location for kitchen because this
area brings prosperity. South-east is the best direction for the kitchen.
North quadrant is second option and north-west is direction. In diagonal
plots, avoid north quadrant which has ill effects on female members. West
quadrant gives average results for kitchen. The kitchen should not be
placed under or above Pooja Room, Toilet or Bed Room.
The Entrance: Entry door of kitchen should be in the East, North or West.
The door of kitchen should not be in any of the corners.
Cooking Gas: The gas stove should be in southeast corner, a few inches
away from the wall. It should not be in front of the main door of the kitchen.
Gas stove or any other cooking material should be placed in such a way as
allows the cook to face only towards the East while cooking. If the lady
faces west while cooking, it may lead to health problems. Cooking with face
towards the south may lead to financial problems in the family. No shelf
should be placed above cooking gas.
Dining in Kitchen :The food should never be served at the dining table
placed in the center of the kitchen. Dining table should be placed in north-
west corner of the room. One should only face towards east or north while
taking food for good digestion.
Gas Cylinder: Gas Cylinder should be kept in south-east. Empty Cylinder
should be kept in south-west.
Refrigerator: The direction of refrigerator should be in south-east, south,
west or north direction. Refrigerator should not be in north-east direction. If
the refrigerator is in south-west direction, it should be a feet away from
corner otherwise it always gets out of order.
Electric Equipments: Heaters, conventional ovens, micro-waves ovens
should be placed in south-east or south side of the kitchen; never in north-
east portion.
Sink: Sink (wash basin) should be in north-east corner as far as possible.
Storage: The storage racks should be made on southern or western wall
Essential commodities like boxes of grain, spices, pulses, etc. should be in
south or west direction. The water source including pitcher, water filter, etc.
may be kept in north-east.
Flooring: Ceramic tiles, mosaic, marble are good choices for kitchen
flooring. Ceramic tile flooring is recommended to accommodate Indian
conditions as it is stain-free, dust-free and scratch resistant.
Windows: There should be one or two windows or air holes in the east
direction of the kitchen. An exhaust fan in the East is good.
Color Scheme: The color of floor and walls should be yellow, orange, rose,
chocolate or red. It should not be black as far as possible.
