Highly Commended in the
Pride in Bedford awards
(we lost to a little-known
thing called The Olympics).
We hope that over the
last three years we have
gone some way to help
raise Bedfords cultural
profle, engender a pride in
the town, and supported
those who are trying to
make a difference in
Bedford along the way.
Please join our Facebook
page, follow us on twitter
and Instagram and we can
keep each other posted
on everything thats going
down in this town.
Thanks again for the
last three years. Its been
emotional.
Erica, Alice
& Team Clanger

Since 2011, the Bedford Clanger
has sought to highlight the thriving
arts and culture scene in Bedford.
Weve championed pubs, festivals,
indie retailers and gardening;
weve given a platform to local
photographers, artists and writers
and created an exhaustive whats
on guide in the process.
We launched The Clanger to
show the doubters that there was
lots going in in Bedford. Over the last
three years, even more good stuff
has started to happen, and we feel
our work here is done.
The printed version of the
Bedford Clanger will cease after this
issue. In its place will be a dynamic,
interactive website with up-to-the-
minute gig and theatre previews,
arts & culture news, the best of the
towns indie shopping and all the
best features our readers know
and love including Unique Bedford,
Hometown Tourist, flm, food,
gardening and The Last Word.
We would like to take this
opportunity to say a huge thank
you for your support and - in many
cases, money - without which
TheClanger would not have
been possible.
As an example of grassroots
citizen journalism, The Clanger has
received national recognition, as

We are thrilled to announce that Clanger contributor and
illustrator extraordinaire, David Litchfield has been working
with Center Parcs to create his interpretation of what the
Subtropical Swimming Paradise at the new village, Woburn
Forest, will look like.
Not only will his work feature on loads of Center Parcs stuff, but receiving the
commission gave David the impetus to give up his teaching job at Bedford
College and concentrate on illustration as his full-time career. We have
collaborated with David for the last three years and are indebted to him
for supporting The Bedford Clanger over that time. Who could forget his
awesome Challenge David drawings, his Great Bedfordian illustrations, and
of course, the pop up Drawing A Day exhibition with We Are Bedford. David,
we salute you!

Skeptics on
the move
The Bedford Skeptics have a
new home. From July onwards
you can join them at their new
home at the North End Social
Club and they have a
mouth-watering programme
of events lined up:
On Thursday July 17th SITP host a
hypnotism show from a hypnotist
who doesnt believe theres any
such thing as the hypnotic state
and its all just suggestion and
peer pressure.
Then on Thursday August 21st they
get cracking on fracking. Weve
heard what politicians, residents
and pressure groups think. But
how about asking a geologist
instead? On Thursday September
18th they cut through the spin to
see if lobbying companies are
undermining our democracy and
on Thursday October 16th we try to
clear up the clouds on confusion
on the issue of the legalisation of
cannabis. (Note to self: make sure
bar stocked with plenty of snacks in
case of munchies).

Summer at the Eagle Gallery
This summers themed exhibition at the Eagle
Gallery runs from 19th July- 16th August.
The subject is ENCOUNTERS with famous artworks, so
visitors will see work that is inspired by famous works
of art. Each piece of work is accompanied by a short
description of the original piece translated by the hands
and eyes of the artists in their preferred medium.
From the 13th 20th September Les Miller is showing his
work. Les has always been involved with the problem
concerning the confict between the 3D world and
the fat surface of the
canvas, exploring
ambiguities of space and
the discrepancies and
uncertainties that arise
from suggestion rather
than description.

Philosophy of Education
Society of Great Britain
(Bedford branch)
Established in 2013, Bedfords PESGB (based at the
University of Bedfordshire) aims to foster links between
philosophy and education. Organiser and UoB senior
lecturer Neil Hopkins is hosting a series of talks aimed
at anybody interested in philosophy in education and
the community. Said Neil, Philosophy is our way of
navigating the world; its how we subconsciously inform
our decisions. We want to demystify philosophy by
bringing speakers with practical context to share their
thoughts. Everyones welcome and theyre free! Neils
goal is for the PESGB lectures to become part of the
fabric of Bedfords cultural scene. The summer sessions
are based around citizenship.

UNIQUE BEDFORD
Since our launch in June 2011, the Bedford
Clanger has sought to celebrate and share the
joy of independent retailers. Unique Bedford has
championed the shops and businesses that are
off the beaten track and that bring diversity to
the town centre. While other High Streets have
suffered from being clone towns, Bedford has
supported a broad range of quirky indies - from
Goldings to Pensieri, Harrison & Simmonds to
DavidJon butchers - and the number of empty
shops is on the wane.
All independent businesses are under threat
from the rise of online shopping, out of town
malls and supermarkets. So, why not do your
best to #shoplocal and divert some (if not all) of
your online or supermarket spend to Bedfords
friendly, neighbourhood indies. Your money will
be reinvested in the town and youll get a lovely
warm glow from being a good citizen. Winner!

HOMETOWN TOURIST
Hometown Tourist -
Bedford In A Day
From Queens Park to Priory Marina, Bedford has many hidden
gems that are perfect for the dedicated Hometown Tourist to
explore. Here at Clanger HQ, we like the unpredictable, the
quirky and the unique places that make Bedford a great place
to spend the day. We asked some of our favourite Bedfordians
to give us their recommendations for Bedford In A Day. There
are lots of pubs, plenty of coffee shops and some great shops
and museums among the suggestions. If youre visiting Bedford,
we hope it gives you some ideas and if you live here, we hope it
reminds you of the great stuff on our doorstep.

Wake up with a hot cup of the house special coffee from the
friendly team at Coffee With Art. Drop in and browse through
the fgures, games and comics at Bedfords best (and only)
comic book shop Close Encounters. Fill up with food on the
brilliant lunch menu at Spaghetti Johns, and grab a sneaky
homemade gelato too. Wander along through Mill Meadows
and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the river. Damn the
diet with a piece of cake and a(nother) coffee at The Kiosk at
The Park. Go see a show at one of Bedfords multiple theatres.
Have a quick pint of local ale (we recommend DNA) and enjoy
some live music, conversation or buzzing atmosphere at one
of Bedfords amazing friendly pubs. We couldnt pick one, but
love The Devonshire Arms, Bedford Arms or The Burnaby Arms.

Dave Hodgson,
Mayor of
Bedford
An ideal day in
Bedford for me would
coincide with the
River Festival, which
weve seen grow over
the years to become
a huge free family
event with so much
to enjoy. Everyone
has their own river
festival stories, whether
it be via their sports
club taking part in
a demonstration,
the costume being
put together for a
family member in the
carnival parade or
the raft race team
from the local pub,
the widespread sense
of connection to the
River Festival makes it a
genuinely community-
owned event which really
is unique to Bedford.
The River Festival is
of course once every
two years, so another
must do on a summer
weekend is a visit to
one of the many village
fetes or shows (there
is a difference) that
take place right across
Bedford Boroughs rural
villages every summer.
These volunteer-run
events showcase the very
best of village life, and
only take place thanks to
the incredible hard work
of local residents. From the array of traditional but often unusual
games to the tea and scones or the homemade sloe gin, which
is tested thoroughly by the judges, they are always special
occasions. The community spirit that shines through makes them
one of the highlights of any summer in Bedford Borough.
I would follow a visit to a village fete or show with a meal in
one of the many excellent rural pubs and restaurants we have.
The calibre of the comedy acts being attracted to the Corn
Exchange recently really shines through, so an evening of stand-
up would be a great way to round off the day.
Emily Finney Great Bedfordian
My perfect perfectly normal Saturday in Bedford:
When Im match ft, I love to do the timed 5k Parkrun at
Bedford Park. Organised by volunteers, around 200 runners take
part which is great for motivation and has a wonderful friendly
atmosphere, for me there is enough people running to make
you want to run faster but no one there that would make you
uncomfortable if you just decided to walk it. Obviously, after
my run Im am feeling very weak and undernourished, so I head
to Fancy. I fnd a pot of tea and some kind of decadent cake
sets me to right, the fact I get to eat and drink it off posh vintage
china is a bonus.
Although all-encompassing as a word, I have never been let
down by the town centre whilst looking for something. The much
derided Bedford charity shops are a particular favourite of mine.
I choose to believe that fully stocked charity shops means that
the people of Bedford are very generous!
Once relieved of all my high quality purchases, the perfect
end to this perfect day would be a bottle of sauvignon blanc
with friends down the Burnaby for conversations that set the
world to rights. The Burnaby has that mixture of sophistication
and busy local that I love.

On a sunny day, a walk or cycle to Priory Country Park is a
pleasure. Take some binoculars and enjoy some peaceful bird
watching in the bird hide, or bring a frisbee to fing on the grass.
The boat supplies shop is a good place to buy rope if youre
thinking of DIY-ing a tree swing in the garden, too. And as my
friend Gemma Rogers says, when youre standing on the sandy
shore of the lake, squint a bit and you can *almost* imagine that
you are by the seaside!
Pick some herbs from the Rothsay roundabout community
herb garden on Castle Road (taking care to leave plenty for
everyone else), grab some pizza dough and mozzarella from
Foods of Italy on Bower Street, then home to roast homegrown
tomatoes to add to the herbs for a sauce. Eat outside at dusk

new landlord takes over the space. The Castle Quarter event is
coming up at the end of June. And of course there is the River
Festival. The Pad and Esquires are bringing loads of exciting
music to town. And our favourite, albeit scaled back, BedFringe
Bite Size is on in July. Then theres the Place Theatre, The Ent
Shed, and the Corn Exchange. We are actually flling up with
great things to do and great places to do them in. Thankfully,
this will all be listed when the Clanger goes online in the coming
months. I, for one, will make this my go-to webpage for events,
local business news, and feel good factor stories of folks living
the dream, or trying to, in Bedford. Just today I spoke to a
lovely neighbour. Shes going on holiday to the Swan Hotel for
a week to escape the four walls of her home. Her health issues
limit her walking the Swan puts her right on the doorstep of
the Embankment, town centre, the library, a spa, and those all
important coffee shops. And dont forget the Higgins. All this on
OUR doorstep. Get out this summer and enjoy it. Keep up the
good good work, Bedford.

available in Bedford? The Clanger, Affnity, Local Life, etc. Theyre
everywhere, fghting for advertising and content. The local
newspapers seem more interested in promoting the worst bins
in Bedford in trying to keep up with the Daily Mail. Wheres our
good news?? Wheres our fun??
We had the kite festival in May it only rained ONE day, so we
were lucky in that respect. We had a free kids festival in the
BedPopShop, which will be looking for another location as a
CHANGE IS GONNA COME
with a glass of white wine and
watch the bats skimming by, while
being serenaded by midwife toads.
A uniquely Bedford experience!
Bedford Library has a wonderful
room on the second foor full of
archives of local newspapers,
photographs and other Bedford
records. Settle down, enjoy the
peaceful atmosphere and delve
into a slice of our towns colourful

something interesting.

Being at home most days with my two children my must do
things in Bedford are defnitely family orientated.
I like to start the day with a walk to Russell Park. Ill grab a
coffee from the Kiosk, maybe catch story time if its a Monday
morning or we head to the playground for a run around. Its
a really well designed play area and theres loads to do for all
ages... even if they do bring far too much sand home with them
afterwards! We might take a walk along the embankment on
the way home and watch the rowers and look at the ducks and
the swans. If theyre lucky then they may get a trip to Arcadia
too for some old fashioned sweet treats.
If we get a rare night out then a meal at Rice never
disappoints with a drinks after at The Ship, The Castle or the
The Three Cups.

Masters of childrens theatre, Bedford-based Full House

The Snow Dog is a new show, which sensitively and

hilarious piece with a giant, bouncing Kangaroo and
snowball fghts - and that real life dog. The story follows
a young girls journey around the world, as she discovers
her grandfathers magical past as an arctic explorer.
Children aged 6 and over will be enthralled by every
moment of this wondrous and magical tale, and anyone
whos ever had a granddad is sure to fnd a place in

Macbeth
Monday 15 September to Saturday 20 September

7.30pm
Tickets: 9
Something wicked comes to the Mill this September.
Macbeth, possibly the bards darkest and most
powerful tragedy, is the frst ever Shakespeare play
to be performed by the Sharnbrook Mill Theatre Trust
and promises to deliver all of the dark, supernatural,
blood and mayhem youd expect, but in a
contemporary setting with not a stitch of tartan
in sight!
Director Barry Thompson says, Macbeth has so
much relevance for the times we live in. Raw political
ambition; instant gratifcation; lust and a greed for
power at any cost. And it serves as a reminder that
nothing comes without a price.
Sharnbrook Mill is the perfect setting for this play. We
have an incredible cast, led by local, professionally
trained actor, Adam Pitt playing Macbeth. Our
production promises to reveal the innermost darkness
and frailty of the human heart. Not forgetting, there
will be blood! It will be an experience.

Cerebral Ballzy are a feisty NYC band, inuenced by the New
York Hardcore scene, 80s skate punk (a great genre to plunder
according to Phaff & Potter) and reminiscent of Gang Green,
Suicidal Tendancies and that dirty pizza/bud smeared sound,
more authentic than 90s skate punk and pogo-ier than art punk.
Enough genre crunching...
Cerebral Ballzy have festivals such as Reading/Leeds,
Sonisphere & Latitude under their belts. Their New album Jaded

THE BEDFRINGE CLANGER
JULY-SEPT 2014
You could create your own Dark Room by closing your eyes but something tells me this one will be better 16
For the past three years, The Bedford Clanger has been an avid
supporter of the Bedfringe Festival. And this year is no exception.
From Friday 4th to Sunday 27th July Bedford will host its eighth
international fringe festival BEDFRINGE BITE SIZED 2014 and
here are our top tips, best bits and must sees:
Dalloway
BEDFRINGE 2014 - ITS BITING BACK!
There are three chances to see the
brilliant a cappella group Simply
Soweto Encha when they return as
part of a UK tour all the way from
South Africa. They will be presenting
their brand new show (performing at
Bedford Theatre on 12th& 13thJuly)
and will also be premiering their
documentary An A Cappella Journey
at the Ent Shed on 11th July at 5.30pm.
Following the documentary you will have the opportunity to ask the guys
some questions and get a taste of their show as they sing a couple songs
from their 60min set. This event is supported by the Bedford Film Festival.
Bedfringe Directors Choice
this year is The Dark Room,
performed by Aussie John
Robertson. This was one of
the most-talked about shows
at last years Edfringe, so we
caught up with John to get
the lowdown & find out why
we should check it out:
Bedford Clanger: Were looking
forward to seeing the Dark Room
when you bring the show to
Bedfringe. Can you give Clanger
readers a brief synopsis of what
to expect?
John Robertson: The Dark Room
is the worlds only live, interactive
video game! Imagine being in
a theatre with a really talented
comedian and then the talented
comedian turns into a oating
head thanks to 5 of special
effects and then you get a
chance to win amazingly terrible
prizes and also 200. Its like a
Fighting Fantasy meets the worlds
most dangerous pub quiz. Its
kinda hard to describe because
its genuinely unique but after
4 million YouTube hits, 134 shows
on three different continents
in everything from 3,000 seat
theatres in Australia to back
rooms in Berlin, youd best believe
youre going to see something
that youll want to see again and
again. Have a play online on your
computer - type The Dark Room
into YouTube and youll get it.
BC: Do audience members have
to like gaming to like the show, or
can non-geeks enjoy it too?
JR: Nope, anyone can come and
enjoy it! If you like gaming, you
kinda get where the show starts.
If you dont know anything about
gaming, its just a wonderful,
funny, surreal experience. No
prior knowledge needed - or
useful, really.
BC: Theres a lot of audience
participation in the show. What
do you do if someone is reticent to
get involved?
JR: Heh, nobody says No to the
oating head.
BC: What quintessentially British
things do you like to get involved
in when youre here? We
Bedfordians invented afternoon
tea, so wed highly recommend
that particular tradition.
JR: Ill be lming the TV series
Videogame Nation for Challenge,
but aside from that, there shall be
much afternoon tea - and many
scones, much clotted cream.
Usually I nish up summer here with
my veins completely clogged and
with the texture of the jam I spent
all summer eating.
Like a good ghost story? Theatre of
The Damned is coming to Bedfringe
for the rst time with their highly-
acclaimed Edinburgh show The
Ghost Hunter at the Ent Shed on 4th
July (7.30pm & 9.00pm). Come join
us for a candle lit evening of a
building, creeping tale of dread.
The Place Theatre return to our
programme with some excellent
shows including Bedfringe
favourite Rebecca Vaughan (I,
Elizabeth, Austens Women, The
Unremarkable Death of Marilyn
Monroe) with her brand new show
Dalloway on 23rd July (7.30pm).
Olivier Award Winner Guy Masterson
brings his brand new show to
Bedfringe Bill Clinton Hercules the
following day at 9.00pm. Bedfringe
director James Pharaoh has hosted
many of Guys shows over the past
14 years so this comes with our
highest recommendation.
For those aged 6+, Bec & Tom will be
in Bedford for the rst time with their
ve-star show Bec & Toms Awesome
Laundry playing at Bedford Theatre
on 27th July at 2.30pm. Sketches that
kids and adults alike will enjoy!
Finally, Bedfords very own Ouse
Valley Singles Club will be launching
their new concept album at
Bedfringe. Be among the rst to see
performances of their futuristic skife
opera Steve at the Ent Shed on
Friday 25th July at 8pm. Although I
hesitate to the use the word epic,
that is how Id describe it, explained
lead singer Tim Baron. They will
also be performing their World Cup
anthem It Could Be Worse which
has received airplay and acclaim
from non-other than Radio 5 Lives
Victoria Darbyshire.

JULY-SEPT 2014
I love the River Festival. But then again I love any festival where Pimms oclock is all day long... 17
River Festival
Attention festival fans the award-winning
Bedford River Festival returns this year on
the 19th and 20th July.
All the best bits, including the raft race along the
river, the amazing rework display, the parade
through the town, fairground rides, stalls and
the music stages will be back as the bi-annual
celebrations get underway. Many of the events
over the weekend raise a huge amount of money
for local and national charities, and the two days
are a brilliant day out for children and grown-ups.
In 2012, Bedford welcomed a record 320,000
visitors to the festival and this year is set to be every
bit as exciting. The Dragon Boat race, where 30
local teams dress up and race down a 350 metre
course on the river is always a great highlight
the festival weekend is a great excuse to enjoy
the embankment, Russell Park and to encourage
friends and family to come and experience the
carnival atmosphere of Bedfords biggest party.

Were really pleased to see this
new infux of flm variety in Bedford.
The whole ethos behind Bedford Film
Festival is to help #SupportVariety,
encouraging others to put on flms
themselves. While community flm
events are certainly no new thing,
were pleased to see were acting
as a catalyst for their evolution.
Its evolution that helps cultural
programmes survive. In fact were
delighted to see our good friends
at The Clanger take the decision to
evolve too. While a tangible, print
version is fantastic, changing times
mean it must go online. Doing this
will help serve a greater degree of
cultural, community projects. It will
be able to respond faster to growing
trends and meet the demands of
local people who want to know
whats happening on their doorstep.
The Clanger has been very kind to
Bedfords flm fans since its frst edition
and we know with its evolution itll be
able to continue being kind to them
for a long time to come.
We cant wait to see how their
online presence develops and
wish the team all the best in its

Creative Arts
Bedford Creative Arts
is a contemporary arts
organisation and charity
that has worked within
the town for over
25 years.
We support and
commission artists to
make innovative new
artwork that is ignited
by place and fueled by
the contributions of the
people that take part.
Recent commissions have
seen us work with people
in the town to lace the
front of 1 St Pauls Square,
create and perform a
new eight movement
choral work for choir and
orchestra, make music
inspired by how bats see,
and bake and decorate
a cake in celebration of
Bedfordshires afternoon
tea traditions.
We also deliver a
programme of events
to support and develop
local creative talent,
including monthly Creative
Bedfordshire networking
meetings, an artist
development programme
and mini commissions
where we offer you
500 to realise a great
creative project.

THE CLANGER
LISTINGS ARE
SPONSORED BY
The Last Word
by The Reverend Sharon
Grenham-Toze, Prison
Chaplain, HMP Bedford.
One of the
things I love
about being
the chaplain
of Bedford
prison is the
sense of
history that
goes with the
place. Sure,
some of that
history makes for grim reading, for
example the different crimes that
have been committed resulting in
imprisonment there, or the fact that
it was place of a number of judicial
executions, perhaps the most
notorious being James Hanratty
in 1962.
But there have also been things that
have happened in Bedford County
Gaol (as it used to be known, on
a former site) that have also had
a huge positive impact. Think,
for example, of the great prison
reformer, John Howard, whose frst
visit to Bedford prison as High Sheriff
in 1773 so shocked him that he
began a campaign of prison reform
that continues today, as the
Howard League.
Another famous Bedfordian linked
with the prison is, of course, John
Bunyan. It was during one of his stays
in jail in the late 1600s, for being
religiously troublesome, that he
wrote The Pilgrims Progress. This
part-fctional, part-autobiographical
story of the travels of Christian
through the ups and downs of life
has been described as one of the
classics of English literature.
Both Johns have a world view in
common, and its one that I try to
demonstrate to the modern day
prisoners in my care that the
journey of life sometimes brings trial
and challenge, but it also brings
the possibility of change, of new
beginnings, and of companions
along the way.
Its a bittersweet time for another
great name in Bedfordshire
lore the Bedford Clanger. Ive
been delighted to be part of this
publication for some time now, and
grateful for the readers putting up
with my witterings (!). There have
been ups and downs, struggles and
triumphs for the publication and the
editorial team. And now there is a
change as the Clanger switches to
a totally online resource.
But change, as I say, brings a
new beginning, and Im looking
forward to playing a small part
in creating something fresh and
vibrant, relevant and celebratory
of all the amazing things going
on in and around this town. The
Clanger in paper version has had
a really positive impact, and it has
been a fantastic companion to the
community of Bedford. Im sure it will
continue to be so online for many
years to come.
