This manual ,ill "ocus on m1 ne, "ree 9ersion o" EAS creator 9ersion 4.1. As
this is the "ree 9ersion7 onl1 one screen ,ill !e a9aila!le. This is the screen $ call the
;<l% School= Screen. $t has the loo8 o" a somethin( 1ou ,oul% see in the late '/3s or
earl1 '>3s. The metho%s an% processes that $ use "or this screen are the same as all the
others. E9en thou(h the1 ,ill seem excessi9e7 complex an% unnecessar17 the1 are
%one this ,a1 "or a reason. These are the processes $ use "or e9er1 screen in 9ersion

Section 1: Getting Started
6e"ore 1ou can operate EAS Emulator 4.17 there are some items that 1ou ,ill
ha9e to ta8e care o" "irst. There are se9eral "iles an% pro(rams that 1ou'll nee% to
install an% %o,nloa% "or optimal use.
E"ternal #rograms
There are three pro(rams $ use "or ma8in( m1 9i%eos that are "rom other
sources. The1 are calle% #amstu%io7 Au%acit17 an% Ain%o,s Mo9ie Ma8er. All o"
these pro(rams can !e %o,nloa%e% at no cost to 1ou. #amstu%io is "or recor%in( the
screen. Au%acit1 is "or an1 soun% ,or8 that ma1 nee% to !e %one. Ain%o,s Mo9ie
Ma8er is "or an1 "inal e%itin(. @ou ,on't nee% Au%acit1 ri(ht no,7 !ut i" 1ou ,ant it7

Ain%o,s Mo9ie Ma8er is usuall1 installe% on most Ain%o,s computers. An1
e%itin( so"t,are ,ill %o7 as all 1ou nee% to %o is to cut the 9i%eo7 paste it7 an% !e a!le
to export it into a "inishe% pro%uct. $" 1ou nee% or ,ant it7 a lin8 can !e "oun% here.

$nstalling and %oading &onts
EAS Emulator Version 4.1 uses se9eral "onts to replicate the EAS screens as
accuratel1 as possi!le. $ ha9e pro9i%e% a !asic ,e!site that contains a lin8 "or all the
"iles that ,ill !e use%. This "ile ,ill contain all o" the "onts that are use% in the "ull
Version 4.1. A"ter 1ou install these7 1ou ,ill not nee% to %o it a(ain i" 1ou %eci%e to
up(ra%e to the "ull 9ersion o" EAS Emulator. The "onts can !e "oun% at this lin8.

@ou ,ill nee% "in% the &onts "ol%er. <nce 1ou %o7 clic8 on the %o,n arro,7 an%
sa9e to 1our pre"erre% %e"ault location. A"ter 1ou ,ill %o this7 1ou then nee% to unFip
the "ol%er. $t has !een compresse% to re%uce "ile siFe7 an% to ma8e trans"errin( easier.
0i(htBclic8 on the "ol%er an% press extract all. <nce 1ou ha9e complete this7 a ne,
"ol%er ,ill appear. A"ter that7 1ou nee% to "in% the "ont section o" 1our computer. $n
Ain%o,s7 this is t1picall1 some,here in the control panel area. #lic8 an% hi(hli(ht

'o(nloading )ones
The !est EAS 9i%eos use tones "or attention an% completion. The1 ma1 !e the
most reco(niFa!le "eature o" the Emer(enc1 Alert S1stem. $ ha9e openin( an% closin(

To %o,nloa% them7 clic8 the arro,s next to the "ile G<penin( Attention ToneG an%
GEn% Three Tones.G Ahen 1ou are in the e%itin( sta(e o" the 9i%eo7 1ou can put these
!e"ore an% a"ter the au%io portion o" the alert.
Ahen 1ou %o,nloa% the tones7 1ou ,ill notice that somethin( is missin(. $n
EAS7 there are three tones at the !e(innin( !e"ore the attention si(nal. These are
calle% SAME hea%ers. SAME hea%ers contain in"ormation on the t1pe o" ,arnin(7
counties7 a""ecte%7 an% %uration o" the ,arnin(. 4either o" these "iles ,ill contain the
openin( SAME hea%ers thou(h. There is a reason "or this. $t is !ecause it is !ecomin(
increasin(l1 contro9ersial to %o so. An1one that transmits SAME hea%ers o9er the
tele9ision air,a9es can !e su!Hect to consi%era!le "ines an% penalties. Ahile the
internet is not un%er the same Huris%iction as tele9ision7 $ %on't "eel com"orta!le ,ith
usin( them m1sel". $ ha9e also ma%e the %ecision to ta8e them out o" man1 o" m1
pre9iousl1 poste% 9i%eos. $ no lon(er use them7 an% $ encoura(e 1ou to %o the same.

$nstalling the #rogram
The last step is to %o,nloa% the actual pro(ram. This ,ill !e un%er the "ol%er
name% GEAS Emulator 4.1 Free VersionG #lic8 on the %o,n,ar% pointin( arro, to
%o,nloa% the "iles. Ma8e sure that 1ou %o,nloa% the entire "ol%er !e"ore usin(.
)ea9in( Hust one "ile out ma1 result in the pro(ram not ,or8in( correctl1.

The preparation ,or8 1ou'll nee% to %o is %etaile%7 !ut 1ou are rea%1 to ta8e the

Section 2: Running EAS Emulator 4.1
4o, that ,e'9e co9ere% the !asics7 ,e can !e(in to "ocus on runnin( the
pro(ram. The "un stu"" !e(ins no,7 as 1ou are o""iciall1 on 1our ,a1 to creatin( an
EAS 9i%eo "or the ,orl% to see.
Starting +p
0unnin( the pro(ram is usuall1 "airl1 eas1. To run the "ile7 clic8 on the "ol%er
that sa1s EAS 4.1 Free Version. This ,ill open up a "ol%er ,ith a!out / "iles. +ou!le
clic8 the "ile that sa1s GEAS Emulator Version 4.1 (Free).G This shoul% open up the
"ile. There is also a "ile in the "ol%er that sa1s GEAS Emulator Version 4.1 (Free) I
Shortcut.G This "ile can !e mo9e% an1,here on 1our computer7 an% 1ou ,ill still !e
a!le to run the emulator. Ma8e sure that 1ou onl1 mo9e the shortcut "ile. $" 1ou mo9e
the main one7 the pro(ram ,ill not !e a!le to run.

The pro(ram is usuall1 prett1 eas1 to run7 an% $ emphasiFe usuall1. There ha9e
!een people that ha9e ha% %i""icult1 runnin( the "ile in the past. $" this is the case7
there is a secon% ,a1 1ou can run the "ile. $n in9ol9es %o,nloa%in( a "ourth external
pro(ram calle% 'la1 6asic. The lin8 can !e "oun% here.

1! 2irus scanner sa!s that the program is a 2irus3
The pro(ram $ use is ,hat is calle% an .exe "ile. .Exe "iles are notorious "or
carr1in( 9iruses7 mal,are7 an% other %ama(in( applications. Some 9irus scanners ,ill
onl1 allo, a select "e, .exe "iles to run. $" 1our 9irus scanner rea%s the .exe "ile as a
9irus7 $ recommen% usin( the secon% metho% o" operation7 ,hich in9ol9es installin(
'la1 6asic. $" that %oesn't ,or87 1ou ma1 ,ant to chec8 1ou 9irus so"t,are out. @ou
ma1 !e a!le to put in an o9erri%e that ,ill allo, the pro(ram to run.

<nce 1ou are a!le to (et the "ile to loa%7 the next part can !e(in. The next sta(e
is the operation an% in"ormation input "or the pro(ram.

Section 3: Operation of EAS Emulator 4.1
4o, ,e can start (oin( throu(h the %ata entr1 process "or the pro(ram. <n startBup7 it
shoul% loo8 li8e this.

statin( 1ou ha9e reache% the limit7 reinstall the pro(ram. $" 1ou see the a!o9e screen7
1ou can select next to continue.

Eere 1ou ,ill see a prompt to select screen. These are all the screens that are
a9aila!le in the "ull 9ersion o" the Emulator. As this is the "ree 9ersion7 there is onl1
one screen that ,ill operate. $t is the "i"th screen "rom the le"t7 an% it loo8s li8e this:

Ahen 1ou press on the small ima(e7 a !i((er ima(e ,ill sho, up in the mi%%le
o" the screen7 as seen a!o9e. The G4extG option shoul% then sho, up7 an% allo, 1ou
to (o to mo9e on. $" 1ou press an1 other screen7 the GnextG !utton ,ill not sho, up7
an% 1ou ,ill not !e allo,e% to continue. A"ter clic8in( GnextG7 1ou ,ill see this

Then 1ou ,ill nee% to clic8 on the alert 1ou ,ant to use. <nce 1ou ha9e %one so7 it
,ill appear at the !ottom o" the screen7 an% allo, 1ou to press next. This ,ill ta8e
1ou to the GEnter )ocationG screen.

Ahen 1ou clic8 on an1 o" the "our !oxes7 it ,ill turn (ra1. @ou ,ill then ha9e
the option to t1pe the name o" the locations 1ou ,oul% li8e to use. $" 1ou press
G6ac8space7G 1ou can reset 1our t1pin( an% start o9er. 'ress G4extG to continue.
-ote 1: )his is an optional section. 4ou can 7ust press ne"t/ and it (ill sho( up as
5&or 4our Area:5 in the alert.
-ote 2: *ounties8Areas must .e entered from top to .ottom.
-ote 3: )he e"tra orange areas are there for a reason. )his screen does not allo(
more than four counties/ and no state names are allo(ed. )his is onl! the case
for this specific screen. All others allo( up to counties8areas and state names.

The next screen is GEn% TimeG or the time the alert ,ill expire. #lic8in( on the !ox
,ill allo, 1ou to t1pe in the %i(its that represent the time the alert ,ill expire.
'ressin( AM or 'M ,ill set the alert accor%in(l1. All three !oxes must !e selecte%
!e"ore the next option ,ill appear. 'ress G4extG to continue.

The next screen is channel num!er. This screen re:uires a channel num!er an%
channel call si(n to !e entere%. This !ox is hi(hli(hte% in (ra17 ,hich means 1ou can
t1pe it in at an1 time. @ou must enter a num!er !e"ore the GnextG !utton ,ill appear.

The next screen is G#all )etters.G #all letters are the "our letters that the station use%
to i%enti"1 itsel". These t1picall1 !e(in ,ith either a A or J7 %epen%in( on ,here the
station is locate%. @ou can t1pe in an1thin( 1ou ,ant7 !ut the screen ,or8s "ar !etter
i" "our letters are use%. 'ressin( G4extG ,ill !rin( up this screen.

)he Emergenc! Action -otification 9 )ermination
The Emer(enc1 Action 4oti"ication 5 Emer(enc1 Action Termination are t,o
alerts that ,ill chan(e the in"ormation that nee%s to !e entere%. The co%e itsel" is
uni:ue in that in"ormation transmitte% is not as customiFa!le. For this speci"ic screen7
onl1 the Enter )ocation screen ,ill !e s8ippe%. $t ,ill %e"ault to the line GFor @our
AreaG7 an% ,ill loo8 somethin( li8e this.
4ote ho, it sa1s G4ational AlertG at the top7 an% GFor @our AreaG a!o9e the
expiration time. A(ain7 this is onl1 the case "or Emer(enc1 Action 4oti"ications an%

Section 4: Recording the Screen
All the in"ormation has !een entere%7 an% no, ,e can recor% the screen. 6e"ore

<nce 1ou ha9e 9eri"ie% that these num!ers are to 1our li8in(7 ,e can then
!e(in the recor%in( process. Ae can no, (o !ac8 to the Emulator ,ith the screen that
loo8s li8e the "ollo,in(.

Ahen 1ou press the re% !utton7 it ,ill chan(e the cursor to a %ra, icon. Mo9e
the cursor so it is !et,een the !lue !ox an% the (ra1 inner e%(e o" the pro(ram. 'ress
%o,n the mouse !utton an% %ra( it until a !ox is %ra,n that "its in !lue an% (ra1 lines
in the opposite corner. Ahen 1ou let (o7 it ,ill !e(in recor%in(.
<nce the recor%in( has starte%7 clic8 an1,here in the Emulator pro(ram7 !ut %o
not mo9e it. The mi%%le (enerall1 ,or8s !est. 'ress the enter !utton on the main
8e1!oar%. This ,ill !e(in a count%o,n to 3. Then the pro(ram ,ill !e(in to run7 an%
#amstu%io ,ill recor% the contents o" the screen. E9entuall17 it ,ill en% up li8e this.

The screen ,ill seem to (o slo,. This is normal. Ahen the 9i%eo is complie% at
the en%7 the "rameBrates that ,ere set ,ill result in the "inishe% pro%uct !ein(
%ispla1e% "our times as "ast. This is %one to ma8e the transitions an% text mo9ement
seem much smoother.
The next thin( 1ou'll nee% to %o it stop the recor%in(. For this speci"ic screen7
1ou ,ant to loo8 "or t,o thin(s. The "irst is 1ou ,ant the current "rame to !e a!o9e
137333. This can !e "oun% on the thir% line in #amstu%io pro(ram. This ,ill (i9e 1ou
a!out one minute o" 9i%eo. @ou can (o as lon( as 1ou ,ant7 !ut that point is ,here $
usuall1 stop. The secon% item is 1ou ,ant to stop it ri(ht as the ,arnin( text pops
!ac8 up. The alert ,arnin( name ,ill "lash in an% out. @ou ,ant to stop it Hust a"ter it
comes !ac8 in. This is %one "or e%itin( purposes. <nce 1ou ha9e reache% that point7
it ,ill prompt 1ou to sa9e the 9i%eo. Sa9e it to 1our %esire% location7 or "ol%er ,ith
