1. QU ES CMMI?
CMMI es el acrnimo de Capability Maturity Model Integration y se refiere a los modelos que contienen las mejores
prcticas que ayudan a las organizaciones a mejorar sus procesos. Han sido desarrollados por equipos de trabajo
formados por especialistas de la industria, el gobierno y elSoftware Engineering Institute (SEI) que transfirilos derechos
al CMMI Institute para su operacin y comercializacin.

Siendo un modelo refleja una abstraccin de la realidad que permite a las organizaciones adoptar prcticas tiles para
alcanzar sus objetivos de negocio, constituye una referencia no es un proceso en s. Para establecer una analoga,
querer adaptar la organizacin al modelo es como si al ver una maqueta de una casa una persona deseara vivir en ella.

La adecuada interpretacin del modelo para cubrir las diferentes situaciones, necesidades y objetivos de una
organizacin son esenciales para lograr los resultados que se quieren. Muchas veces por desconocimiento o por falta de
sentido comn o criterio, el resultado no es lo esperado. Por ello es importante saber Qe es CMMI y Qu no esperar de
CMMI.
2. AREAS DE PROCESO DE CMMI
Segn el modelo que se utilice se puede obtener el documento con un conjunto de guas que ayudan en:

Desarrollo y mantenimiento de productos y servicios (CMMI DEV),
Adquisicin de productos y servicios (CMMI ACQ) y
Establecimiento, entrega y gestin de los servicios (CMMI SVC).

Este modelo establece un conjunto de prcticas o procesos clave agrupados en reas Clave de Proceso (KPA - Key
Process Area). Para cada rea de proceso define un conjunto de buenas prcticas que habrn de ser:
Definidas en un procedimiento documentado
Provistas (la organizacin) de los medios y formacin necesarios
Ejecutadas de un modo sistemtico, universal y uniforme (institucionalizadas)
Medidas
Verificadas

3. CULES SON LOS NIVELES DE MADUREZ DEL CMMI?

A su vez estas reas de Proceso se agrupan en cinco "niveles de madurez", de modo que una organizacin que
tenga institucionalizadas todas las prcticas incluidas en un nivel y sus inferiores, se considera que ha alcanzado ese
nivel de madurez.
Los niveles son:
0 - Inexistente. Las Organizaciones carecen completamente de cualquier proceso reconocible e incluso se
desconoce la existencia de un problema a resolver.
1 - Inicial. Las organizaciones en este nivel no disponen de un ambiente estable para el desarrollo y
mantenimiento de software. Aunque se utilicen tcnicas correctas de ingeniera, los esfuerzos se ven minados por
falta de planificacin. El xito de los proyectos se basa la mayora de las veces en el esfuerzo personal, aunque a
menudo se producen fracasos y casi siempre retrasos y sobrecostes. El resultado de los proyectos es
impredecible.
2 - Repetible. En este nivel las organizaciones disponen de unas prcticas institucionalizadas de gestin de
proyectos, existen unas mtricas bsicas y un razonable seguimiento de la calidad. La relacin con subcontratistas
y clientes est gestionada sistemticamente.
3 - Definido. Adems de una buena gestin de proyectos, a este nivel las organizaciones disponen de correctos
procedimientos de coordinacin entre grupos, formacin del personal, tcnicas de ingeniera ms detalladas y un
nivel ms avanzado de mtricas en los procesos. Se implementan tcnicas de revisin por pares (peer reviews).
4 - Gestionado. Se caracteriza porque las organizaciones disponen de un conjunto de mtricas significativas de
calidad y productividad, que se usan de modo sistemtico para la toma de decisiones y la gestin de riesgos. El
software resultante es de alta calidad.
5 - Optimizado. La organizacin completa est volcada en la mejora continua de los procesos. Se hace uso
intensivo de las mtricas y se gestiona el proceso de innovacin.

4. QUIN CERTIFICA EN CMMI?

El SEI (el Software Engineering Institute, organismo que regula y del que es propiedad el modelo CMMI) el que emite un
certificado de que cierta organizacin ha sido evaluada positivamente frente al modelo. Pero no es as, no hay tal
certificacin. El SEI no emite un certificado a las organizaciones evaluadas positivamente (ver, por ejemplo, aqu), slo
acredita a los auditores (los llamados lead appraisers en terminologa CMMI). En ocasiones, voluntariamente, estos
auditores elaboran algo similar a una certificacin (un diploma), en el que se muestran los datos y resultados de la
auditora, pero que no es un documento oficial. El nico documento oficial con los resultados de la evaluacin es el que
llaman Appraisal Disclosure Statement, que se rellena al final de la auditora, contiene los datos (participantes, fechas,
etc.), que elabora el auditor, que firma, principalmente, el responsable de la organizacin evaluada, y que se enva al SEI
(se enva al SEI, no nos lo enva el SEI a nosotros) para que en su Web aparezca la organizacin evaluada (la cual
estar presente en dicha Web durante tres aos).
