A
t the end of your workday, do you experience a
ringing in your ears or a gradual muffling of
sounds? If you do, it could mean you will have
difficulty hearing the high frequencies of speech. Working
without hearing protection in a loud environment can
irreversibly damage tiny sensory cells inside your ears.
When these are damaged, you lose your hearing. Noise-
induced hearing loss is permanent.
The best way to avoid hearing damage is to avoid
excessive, prolonged exposure to noise. Exposure to noise
above a caution zone of 85-90 dBA (decibels) can cause
loss of hearing. Here are some examples of noise hazard
levels:
40-60 dBA Normal conversation
80-90 dBA Machine shop, printing press,
electric motor
100-120 dBA Sand blasting
140+ dBA Jet plane engine
There are two common types of hearing personal
protective equipment (PPE) that you can use to protect
your hearing: ear plugs and ear muffs.
Ear plugs fit into the ear canal to prevent sound from
entering. Ear plugs come in many different forms: some
are premolded in your particular size and some are made
to fit all ears. To use them, roll them up and insert them
into the ear canal where they will expand, blocking off
unwanted noise. Some earplugs are disposable, while
others are reusable. Disposable types are preferred as they
are more sanitary. If you are using reusable ear plugs,
keep them clean by washing them in mild liquid detergent
and warm water. Always squeeze out excess water and
air dry them. If they harden, discard them, as they will no
longer expand.
Protect Your Hearing
Ear muffs have rigid cups with soft plastic cushions
sealing around the ears. Their hard outer shells bounce
sound away from the head, and the seal around the ear
stops it from leaking in. Some are designed to be worn
with other equipment, such as safety hats or face shields.
Ear muffs and ear plugs may be worn in conjunction with
each other to seal out very loud noises. However, glasses,
facial hair, long hair, long sideburns, and facial movements
can reduce their protection. Replace ear muffs when they
become stiff, cracked, or no longer seal.
Saudi Aramco Hearing Conservation Program requires
that all noise exposed employees wear hearing protection
when they enter hazardous noise workplaces. Remember
to always follow the manufacturers instructions for proper
cleaning and maintenance of your hearing protectors. For
your hearing protectors to be effective, you must use them
properly and keep them in good condition.
Have your hearing checked regularly if you work in a
noisy environment, or if you develop any of these signs
of hearing loss:
Sounds seem muffled to you.
Your ears ring persistently.
You shout or talk too loudly.
October 1999 - Personal Protective Equipment 4 Saudi Aramco Loss Prevention Department
What do all these items have in common? They are all various
forms of personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE is required
in the workplace to protect you from hazards that could cause
injury or even death. Unfortunately, in Saudi Aramco, as well
as in the rest of the world, there are too many examples of
how workers have been injured or died because they were
not wearing the appropriate PPE for the job.
Although they dont often make the headlines, there are also
some PPE success stories. Heres a local example of how
wearing the appropriate PPE saved a mans life, when he fell
from a height.
The employee was standing on a base lift gathering materials
to pass to a coworker who was on the ground. Unfortunately,
as he straightened he hit his head on an overhead board, which
rendered him unconscious. He lost his balance and fell from
the base lift. His safety helmet saved him from serious head
injury, while his safety harness prevented him from falling to
the ground by suspending him until he was safely retrieved
by his coworkers. Without the correct PPE, it is certain that
this worker would have been seriously injured, or perhaps
even killed.
Follow this employeess example: always wear the personal
protective equipment appropriate for the task at hand.

Eye Protection in theWorkplace
E
very day, hundreds of eye injuries occur in the
workplace. The financial costs and the personal
toll of these injuries are enormousmillions of
riyals are lost to production interruptions, medical
expenses, and workers compensation, in addition to
possible permanent and irreversible eye damage.
What contributes to eye injuries at work?
The first contributing factor is failure to wear any eye
protection. Statistics have shown that three out of every
five employees injured were not wearing any eye
protection at the time of the accident.
The second factor is wearing incorrect eye protection for
the task. A far-too-common example is an employee
wearing eyeglasses that are not safety glasses.
What causes eye injuries?
Here are some of the most commonly reported causes of
or contributing factors to eye injuries:
Flying particles
Falling objects
Sparks
Chemical splashes
Radiation (ultraviolet light, infrared rays,
microwaves and lasers)
Struck by objects swinging from a fixed or
attached position like ropes and chains
Tools pulled into the eye by the employee using
them
Distraction or lack of concentration on the task
being performed
Where do these accidents occur most often?
Potential eye hazards exist in every industry, including
the petroleum industry. Employees at risk are those who
do not wear appropriate eye protection for the task at hand.
People who do not wear appropriate eye protection are
not immune to eye injuries at home, either.
How can eye injuries be prevented?
Always wear effective eye protection. The type of job
and the hazard it presents determine the type of eye
protection neededspectacles, goggles, face shields,
hoods, or welding helmets. In addition, protective eyewear
must be properly fitted to the wearer. It should not cause
headaches or slip off too easily because of poor fit, or fog
up because of poor ventilation. Protective eyewear must
offer unrestricted clear vision as well as filter out irritating
and dangerous radiation. Above all, it must also meet
company safety standards.
In order for eye protection to do its job, you must maintain
it properly. Replace scratched, dirty, or broken lenses and
loose frames immediately. Scratches and dirty lenses
reduce vision, cause glare, and may contribute to
accidents.
Protect one of the most valuable assets you haveyour
vision. Know the hazards your eyes face on the job. Use
the correct eye protection and always follow safe work
practices.
Remember, eye protection can only
work if you wear it!
October 1999 - Personal Protective Equipment 6 Saudi Aramco Loss Prevention Department
Wearing seat belts in privately-owned vehicles will become a mandatory requirement in Saudi Arabia as of December
08, 1999. This requirement is being put in place to save lives. The truth is, 80% of people who died in car accidents
were not wearing their seat belts. Many of these fatally injured people could have been saved had they worn their seat
belts.
Seat belts are not unnecessary car accessories. They are essential lifesaving personal protective equipment. Consider
this: when a car traveling at a speed of 88 kph (55 mph) hits a solid object, the following occurs within one second of
the crash.*
N 0.1 second: The front bumper and grille collapse.
N 0.2 second: The hood crumples, rises, and strikes the windshield. Fenders wrap around
the solid object. The cars forward momentum is abruptly halted, but
everything inside the car (including unbuckled occupants) continue moving
forward at 88 kph (55 mph).
N 0.3 second: The steering wheel bends around the steering column. The unbuckled
occupants continue moving forward at 88 kph (55 mph).
N 0.4 second: The front 0.6 meters (2 feet) of the vehicle is crushed as the dissipating
energy of its forward momentum is transferred to the solid object. The
unbuckled vehicle occupants continue moving forward at a speed of 88 kph
(55 mph).
N 0.5 second: The driver is impaled on the steering column.
N 0.6 second: The head of the unbuckled front seat occupant smashes into the windshield.
N 0.7 second: The vehicle is now damaged beyond repair. So are all unbuckled occupants;
they are clinically dead.
The message is simple. Wear your seat belt and reach your destination safely. Remember, wearing a seat belt is soon
to become a mandatory requirement. There are no more excuses.
Why Should You Use Seat Belts?
