Day Activity Location Description Accomm. Food 1 - 2 Flight Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Depart the UK. Your flight may be overnight and involve a transfer en route. Arrive in Dar es Salaam on the east coast of Tanzania. The teams may need to catch their onward transport to the city of Mbeya upon arrival. However, if the arrival time in Dar Es Salaam is late, the teams may need to spend a night at a local guesthouse before catching their onward transport the following day. Plane Provided on flight 3 Travel & Orientation Mbeya Make your way to the city of Mbeya in southern Tanzania. This is a long bus journey, which normally takes around 13 hours. The overland journey will provide the team members with first glimpses into Tanzanian culture and life, as they pass through towns, villages, and different landscapes on their way south. The journey could be broken up with an overnight stop on the way or completed in one day. Once in Mbeya, the teams will continue acclimatising to Tanzanias culture and make some preparations for the rest of their itinerary. Guesthouse Provided / Self-catering / Local Eateries 4 - 8 Grassroots Project Mbeya Grassroots is a UK registered charity with the aim to relieve poverty. Grassroots runs sponsorship programmes in several countries throughout the world, including Tanzania, to provide food, education, medical care, and accommodation to people in need. In Tanzania they mainly operate in and around the city of Mbeya. The project sites the teams will be visiting during their project phase are located between 30 minutes walk and 1 hour drive from Mbeya and vehicles will be provided to transport the team members to a variety of project sites. Several translators will be employed to provide additional assistance during the project phase. The teams could get involved with a variety of tasks to help Grassroots with their work around Mbeya, which could include delivering water filters, clothes, mattresses and chickens to local families, taking local children to the zoo, visiting school assemblies and local hospitals, interacting with secondary students, as well as younger children, or helping with the charitys feeding programmes. It provides detailed information on each phase of your expedition including where you will be accommodated and how you will eat. The overall expedition will be led by the team, under the guidance of the Expedition Leader but some phases may also be led by in-country guides.
Travel plans can sometimes be adversely affected by unforeseen circumstances in-country, and this is especially the case when planning trips to developing regions. Such events may require Outlook to change the order of itinerary phases and / or the itinerary content in order to ensure the safety and security of the expedition team. You may make it to Mangula at the entrance to the Udzungwa National Park today, but if not you will need to continue from Mikumi Town to Mangula the following morning. 11 - 13 Trek Mwanihana Trail Udzungwa National Park The Udzungwa National Park protects the wild, lushly forested slopes of the Udzungwa Mountains. There is an abundance of unique plants and no less than ten primate species in the park, amongst other wildlife. The National Park is also known for its beautiful waterfalls and breathtaking views of the plains below. There are several rugged trails, which all provide adventurous trekking away from the crowds. The Mwanihana Trail, which the teams are interested in, is 35 40km long and will take the teams up to peak at over 2000m for spectacular views of the forest, remnant of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountain chain. The trail leads deep into the forest, passing through several habitats, including woodland, grassland, montane forest, bamboo, and finally heather at the peak. Eyes should be kept peeled for any wild animals that inhabit the area! The teams will leave mid-morning on the first day, spend two nights camping in the National Park, and then have an early start to exit the park mid- morning on the third day of the trek. Alternatively, there is a selection of day treks in the National Park. Mikumi National Park For your safari phase you will visit one of Tanzanias most unspoilt reserves, Mikumi National Park. The Mikumi flood plain is the main feature of the park along with the bordering mountain ranges. The National Park is home to the Big Five and you could see various wild animals, such as lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and crocodiles.
