The Opening Ceremony of the AFCC 2014 on 30 May 2014 was graced by Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and 2nd Minister, Ministry of Communications and Information, With India as the country of focus for 2014, Ms Vijay Thakur Singh, the High Commissioner of India in Singapore, was also in attendance.
The Minister presented the Schlostic Asian Book Award.( SABA) to 5 writers i.e. 1 from Singapore, 2 from India and 2 from Philippines. A Welcome speech was delivered by Ms Claire Chang, Festival Chairperson. SABA is a biennial award for outstanding writers of childrens material in Asia.
The India Night on the evening of 1 June 2014 was a literary night celebrating AFCCs country of focus- India and Indias rich childrens literary heritage. The evening also saw the launching of Mr. S.R.Nathan, 6 th
Singapore President multilingual book The Crane and The Crab which had been translated into Chinese, Malay and Tamil.
The evening featured a storytelling and a sitar performance.
The AFCC BOA members also took time to meet on Monday 2 June 2014 at the National Library Singapore. It was chaired by Ms Claire Chiang, AFCC Chairman. A Mid Stream BOA Meeting is being planned for 20-22 November 2014 in Shanghai, China. Go to page 2

BIMP EAGA WOMEN LEADERS CAF A Women Leaders Caf was held on Friday 20 June 2014 organised by the BIMP EAGA Business Council as part of the inaugural BIMP EAGA Integrated Cultural Expo programme. Its aim was to share information on BIMP EAGAs role in the region and of its business and investment opportunities. The guests were welcomed by Pg Yura Kesteria, Executive Chairman BIMP EAGA Business Council and a talk by DP Murni, Head of Food Basket cluster at BEBC. This was followed by a brainstorming session led by the Supreme Host. Members of the Womens Business Council were present.

BLA held an Majlis Tahlil on Sunday 15 Jun 2014 . To welcome the guests and members were Pn Nellie, Awg Hj Abd Talip and Executive Board Members. The event began with a Welcoming Remarks by Awg Hj Abd Talip, Chairman of Organising Committee. The recital of Tahlil, Surah Yassin and Doa was led by Ustaz Haji Awg Tarmizi Hj Mahmud of Institut Thafiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
It was held at the Multipurpose Hall of Pusat Dakwah Islamiah, Kg Pulaie and attended by guests, members and their.families.

30 may- 3 June 2014 Media Mart, Book Fair and Rights Exchange The AFCC Media Mart was a marketplace for local childrens content industry and professionals to network and was open to trade and the public. For the first time a Rights Exchange was organized for publishers and literary agents from Asia, USA, New Zealand and Australia to sell or exchange book rights and translation rights, negotiate co-publishing and other agreements. . 30 May -3 June 2014 Book and Product launches and Fun at the Plaza 37 new tiles were launched. Childrens Day- Illustrators, armed with markers and paint, battled it out producing illustrations as a story was read out to them. Also at the plaza, children (and adults) put their head-body coordination to the test at our Augmented Reality Rice Game created by Vast Potato, collecting falling rice on the screen with a virtual bowl. 30 May-3 June 2014 Book Illustrators Gallery The BIG aimed to showcase the works of local and regional illustrators and artists-across genres and borders-and promote them to a wider audience. 31 May 2014 Teachers Congress, The audience listened to expert practitioners as they discussed how literacy is dependent on more than reading alone, and how art, drama, and music all play hugely important roles in developing a child's literacy. It gave teachers and educators with the skill and knowledge to impact early literacy through bilingualism. 31 May 2014 Celebrating Stars Celebrating Our Stars was an evening event dedicated to Singapore authors, illustrators, publishers, distributors and publishing professionals. The event was graced by Ms Sim Ann, Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information & Ministry of Education. A talk was presented on Growing by Leaps and Bounds: Childrens book publishing in Singapore.This year, three bilingual books The Naughty Mynah, Where is My Home? and The Snail Who Didn't Want His Shell were launched at Celebrating Our Stars. Near & Dear, a compilation of short stories written by 14 authors from Singapore and Australia, was also launched . 1 June 2014 Public/Language Programmes Free Talks and activities were offered in Chinese, Malay and Tamil. They were held at Ang Mo Kio Public Library, Bedok Public Library, Geylang East Public Library and the Jurong Regional Library. 1 June 2014 Parents Forum Sally Gardner spoke about how story is key, and remaining true to the story and characters at all times. She discussed how to set up characters and develop them through writing, as well as the importance of creating stories without patronising children, by working to their strengths and brilliant imaginations. The Forum offered parents, teachers and other related professionals the opportunity to get support, information and advice on nurturing early literacy at home. 1-3 June 2014 Writers and Illustrators Conference "Are You Afraid of the Dark? Deconstructing Spooky Yarns and Scary Tales" by Mahtab Narsimhan and Cristy Burne. Why do scary stories stay with children and what makes them such effective stories? How do you create skin-crawling, flesh-creeping spooky yarns and scary tales? Mahtab Narsimhan and Cristy Burne discussed their experiences in researching and writing for this spine- tingling genre. The conference gathered writers and illustrators and publishing industry professionals to share, network and celebrate childrens content form Asia and around the world. 2 June 2014 Childrens Literature Lecture This years highlight talk was on The Book as an interactive Tool between Child and Language in the Middle East by Ms Fatima Sharafeddine from Lebanon has produced 95 titles in children and young adult fiction. The multiple award author was twice nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. 3 June 2014 Media Summit The Summit provided a crossover networking opportunity for media and literary professionals to discuss issues on content market like digital marketing, interactive narrative, pitching, multi- platform story telling. Introduced for the first ever Speed Pitching session which gave participants a chance to pitch their ideas to any one of our panelists for a chance to get their ideas commissioned. Go to page 7.

PROGRAM WANITA BERMAKLUMAT (Keushawanan/Entrepreneurship)
The event was initiated by the Information Department with the aim of instilling inspiration and spirit to women folk and to expose them with change in handling any challenges concerning problems faced by women and their daughters; to give understanding as well as information on how to enhance their standard of living by economic means for themselves and their family.
It was launched by Yang Berhormat Datin Paduka Hajah Zasia Sirin, LegCo member on 11 June 2014. Some 100 women members of the Council of Women Brunei Darussalam, Womens Business Council-Brunei Darussalam and women bureaua of mukim Pengakaln Batu were in attendance.
In the morning there were sharing sessions and talks from officers of the Ministry of Industry and of Primary Resources on various aspects of business initiatives, Cottage and handicraft innovation Centre, Promotion and Marketing Centre and Badan Kemajuan Industri Brunei (BINA)..
In the afternoon after a lovely lunch and noon prayers, the group were transported by buses to Hana Soy & World (B) Sendirian Berhad, Kampung Serambangun, Tutong that produces soya milk drink, to have a first hand look at the processing of soya milk drink Suku-Suku. Han Soya is owned by Dyg Wan Krisnadi Osman, a woman entrepreneur.
