Imelda Romualdez Marcos


Imelda Romualdez was born in 1929 in Manila. When she turned 9, her family moved to Leyte
following her mother's death. She took up education at the St. Paul College of Tacloban. She joined
beauty pageants and was later crowned "Rose of Tacloban," "Miss Leyte," and "Miss Philippines" for the
Philippine-American Friendship celebration.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Pedro L. Yap (1988)


Pedro Yap (July 1, 1918 November 20, 2003) was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the
Philippines in 1988. He briefly served for two and a half months from April 19, 1988 to June 30,
1988.Yap, served as secretary of the United Nations Human Rights Commission and was one of the 16
delegates who refused to sign the 1973 Philippine Constitution. He was appointed to the Presidential
Commission on Good Government in 1986 before being appointed associate justice.

San Juanico Bridge



The San JuanicoBridge links the islands of Samar and Leyte together. Construction began in
1969 and was completed 4 years later. There are claims of it being the longest, biggest, most beautiful
bridge and the view from the top is very inspiring.

Mahagnao Volcano National Park



Situated 1,200 meters above sea level and surrounded with Leytes natural wonders, the park is
listed as one of the protected areas identified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN). It consists of small protected areas with high visitor value. Tourists travel to Mahagnao Volcano
National Park to walk among a vast array of flora and fauna, enjoy a dip at the hot springs and marvel at
the sight of volcanic craters.

MacArthur Landing Memorial


DouglasMacArthur's return to the Philippines together with the American military forces after a
period of exile in 1944. Hill 522, a hill located near the town center, was the site of fierce fighting
between Allied and Japanese forces during the Second World War. The metropolitan cathedral of the
archdiocese, located right across Palo's municipal hall, was used as a hospital for wounded Filipino and
American forces. A memorial now stands at the beach site where MacArthur and his troops landed,
locally known as the MacArthur's Park. The first Gabaldon Building is also situated in Brgy. San Joaquin
Palo, Leyte. It was inaugurated by President Sergio Osmea.

Palo Cathedral


The Palo Cathedral also known as Our Lord's Transfiguration Cathedral in Palo, Leyte was
constructed in 1596 under the direction of the Jesuits who founded Palo, used for some time as their
residence. It takes over by the Augustinians, 1768; by the Franciscans, 1843. Repaired by Fr. Agustin de
Consuegra, who built the two towers, 1850; by Fr. Pantaleon dela Fuente, who installed a clock on the
facade, 1896. It proclaimed a cathedral 25 March 1938. Msgr. Manuel Cascarias, first bishop. It used as
hospital, October 1944 to March 1945, by American Liberation Forces. It was renovated into a Neo-
Gothic design and was elevated to an archdiocese in 1987. An impressive tabernacle held by
Renaissance-styled gilded angels is added to the altarpiece.

Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival



Celebration every last week of the month of June Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival is a very popular
Leyte festival that regularly draws lots of attention from foreign and local tourists alike. With Tacloban
City as its focal point, this event aims to commemorate folk beliefs, epics, as well as the colorful
traditions of the native people in the province.In general, dance-drama presentations are major
highlights of this festival, which feature people who cover their bodies with colorful paints.Aside from
the wonderful cultural presentations, this event also features many bazaars, where tourists can
purchase native products, special delicacies, and other interesting items.

Buyugan Festival



The Buyogan Festival in the town of Abuyog, Leyte is celebrated in conjunction with the time
leading to the town's fiesta which is on the 29th of August. At the onset of the month of August, the
town is filled with excitement as the Buyogan festival is again to be held and the Buyogan Dance Group
will once again show the spectacle of the town's festival in different competitions around the country.

Abaca

People in Southern Leyte also go into abaca planting.The fibers from Leyte and the province are
recognized as having the best quality. On the year 1990 to 1999, Southern Leyte produced abaca with a
rate of 17 percent.

Coconut

Most of the people in Southern Leyte go into coconut planting, a widely distributed industry,
especially in mountainous and even plain regions. The GIZ of the German Development Cooperation has
embarked on a value chain study on one of the most important products in Region 8 the coconut,
particularly in Leyte and Southern Leyte.
