7 Rationale for inclusion of the course in the program:
This course will introduce students the general knowledge and concept of power
electronics switches, power conversion circuits, drives and control techniques. Hands on
experience of operation of power converters, typical AC and DC drive system will be
achieved through practical task exercises.

12 Course Educational Objectives (CEOs)
The objectives of this subject are :-
1. To provide the students the principle of the operation and characteristic of power
electronic devices and its applications.
2. To expose the students the classifications of power electronics converter, inverter and
drives and describe the principle operation and applications of each type.
3. To enable the student to develop, construct, operate and testing power electronic
converters and drives in the laboratory.

13 Course Outcomes (COs)
At the end of this subject, students will able to :-
1. Evaluate the different types of power electronics devices, power electronics converter
by relating their principle of operation, waveforms and properties with the applications.
2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding the differences between DC and AC
drives with regards the principle of operation and its applications.
3. Perform a lab experiment of power electronics converter, inverter and drive packages
and apply appropriate techniques, measuring instrument and tools in measuring the
waveforms.
4. Work effectively in groups while performing lab experiments.

15 Teaching-learning strategy
Teaching and learning will be via lecture, practical laboratory work and self-study.
Students will also require doing their own self studies and research for certain topics.
Assessment strategy
Students will be assessed through written quizzes, tests. Peer evaluation will be part of
the assessment of the teamwork.
16 Synopsis
The course will introduce the students to the following topics in the area of power
electronics: power switches and their characteristics, various types of power electronics
converters, drives and its applications. Besides, the students will undertake, under
supervision, laboratory experiments to analyze the switching behaviours as well as
investigating the output behaviours of power electronics converter and drives.
