Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 08

Tobins. A name provided to a piece of floor about 20 miles rectangular lying S. by E. from the
Highland Light. It runs from about 40 miles to around 60 kilometers offshore, the depths slowly
increasing because the bottom ski slopes away equally from the shore from 75 to 95 fathoms more
than a bottom of clay, fine sand, and pebbles. Cod are taken in thesummer and spring, and fall, and
haddock inFebruary and March, and April. Compared with the grounds off Chatham, this is not to be
considered a hake ground, even though a few hake are taken here in summertime.
The Shoal Ground, stretching easterly from Thacher Island, has depths from twenty to thirty fathoms
more than a bottom of sand and gravel. This area is all about 15 miles long by 5 a long way wide and
is an important pollock ground with their spawning time as well as a very good fall cod-sportfishing
ground. It really is about 12 miles E. by N. from Thacher Island to its center and 21 mls SE. by S.
through the Isle of Shoals. Flounder draggers also operate on this page on the shoal ground and all
of around Thacher Island but mostly to eastward And southeastward.
Earlier this fishery was almost entirely carried on by trawlers and hands-liners, but the gill-internet
fishery on these reasons is of great and steadily developing importance. Of late the greater part of
the haddock catch is taken by the "otter-trawl" method, this equipment being controlled by steamers
of sizeable size and upon the greater number of distant grounds, such as Georges Bank, the South
Funnel, and the Western Bank. A similar change to minn kota maxxum grounds farther overseas has
to an excellent extent taken place in the number of larger cruising vessels, hence leaving Jeffreys
and other inshore banks for the smaller create; except that, together with the high prices of haddock
and cod in the winter months, it is often profitable for these greater vessels to work off to near-by
banks for starters set and return to dock the same day.
East aspect of Cape Cod. The water bottom away from the east part of Cape Cod is primarily sandy
and slopes off gradually in the beach, achieving depths of 30 to 40 fathoms at 5 to 7 miles from land.
Under Chatham the slope is even more progressive. Within these limits excellent catches of cod are
taken sometimes, and to a less level the same is true of haddock. Farther from the shoreline, in from
40 to 80 fathoms and from the point 8 or 10 miles off of the Highlands of Cape Cod to another point
lying 20 miles or maybe more SSE. from Chatham Lamps, is a ongoing stretch of excellent haddock
grounds for winter sportfishing. The deep h2o off Chatham furnishes exceptional hake sportfishing
in slip and summertime.
Clay-based Ridge. At various factors about the corners of Jeffreys Ledge are small unattached
ridges, which in their time of year are good minn kota maxxum reasons. The present bit of ground is
situated 26 mls S. by W. through the lightship at Portland, which course and distance provide us on
the northern advantage. There is a 50-fathom shoal of small dimensions upon it, but somewhere else
soundings common from 65 to 70 fathoms over a bottom of hard clay. The length of the earth is
about 4 miles NNE. and SSW., and the breadth about 1 mile. This furnishes very good haddocking in
January, Feb. and March. the latter calendar month showing the very best fishing.
Nantucket Shoals. This stretch out of bars and greater waters involving, roughly triangular in type
with its apex at the northern, lies across the western side of the To the south Channel, stretching out
S. and SE. from your southern conclusion of Cape Nantucket and Cod Island. From Monomoy Denote
Rogers Minn Kota Maxxum Floor, on the eastern edge of Phelps Bank, it is SSE. 80 miles. Its width
from Southeast Rips to the european edge of New South Shoal is 40 miles. The area includes a
number of "angling spots" and shoals, among which the following are the main: Pollock Rip Crown,
Soil and Rose Shoal, Excellent Rip, Davis Bank, Sportfishing Rip, Old and New South Shoal, and
Phelps Bank.
Platt's Banking institution or New Ledge. This bears E. by N. ? N. from Thacher Tropical isle, from
which the shoal portion of the ledge is distant 53 miles. From Portland Lightship it is 30 miles SSE.
to the center of the ground. The lender is about 12 miles extended, NE. and SW.. contributing to 8
kilometers wide. The western shoal, which is of small degree and difficult and which has a
considerable amount of old shells with it, is positioned near the middle, its level being 29 fathoms.
With this shoal towards the Southwest Top is about 11 miles SW. by S. Another shoal lies E. 3 mls,
having about 30 fathoms over beach sand and gravel, which is a very good fall terrain for haddock.
East-northeast from the western shoal 3 kilometers brings us to a rocky ridge, with spots of hard dirt
and pebbles between, in 65-fathom range, which is a great winter cusk ground, these minn kota
maxxum remaining right here until April. Over a great deal of the bank the depths vary from 30 to
35 fathoms with a underside of stones and gravel. From the edge of the shoaler region the bottom
slopes gradually to 50 or 60 fathoms, beyond which it drops suddenly to 80 or 90 fathoms over a
muddy bottom.
Morris Ledge. This is situated eastward of Chatham and is a favorite soil for certain cod fishermen
during spring and early summer season. Schooners and small craft operate right here.
Fifty-five Fathom Bunch. To the west of Cashes Bank is a rocky ridge extending ENE. and WSW.
about 4 miles and getting a. size of about 1 mile. This can be mainly a cod ground, the conditions for
the varieties being as on Cashes Bank.
John Dyers Ridge. This lies 14 a long way S. by E. from Toothakers Ridge, 40 a long way S. by E.
from Monhegan Tropical isle, and 7 miles NE. from Cashes Bank. It really is about 5 miles very long
by 2 miles large, lying within an ENE. and WSW. direction. The water is shoalest in the western
edge, where come from 45 to 50 fathoms over a well-defined, pebbly bottom; thence the ground
slopes towards the NE. into 75 and 80 fathoms spanning a hard, gravelly, and muddy bottom, in
every other guidelines falling off sharply to 90 and 100 fathom soundings over a muddy bottom.
Tillies Bank. [13] This bears E And S from Eastern Position Light just dropping Thacher Island
Gentle, then 3 miles farther for best sport fishing: and E. by S. ? S. from Thacher Island, Cape Ann,
through which the shoal on the centre of the ground is distant 18 miles. This can be a small difficult
spot with depths of from 25 to 28 fathoms, away from which the drinking water deepens to 40
fathoms over a sizeable area. The length of the entire ground is about 10 miles in a E. and W. path
and the size about 5 miles. Well before reaching the mud at still better depths but an area of shoal
h2o connects this ground with West Jeffreys, at the benefit it slips off swiftly to depths of 50 to 60
fathoms. The base is rough and rocky on the greater section of the bank. Tillies was earlier regarded
as one of the best minn kota maxxum grounds off Cape Ann and it is still resorted to for cod and
haddock in the fall and spring; for hake in thespring and summer, and slip, and for pollock in the
spring and slip. The minn kota maxxum is mainly by trawling, using the gillnetters operating on the
shoal grounds in under 50 fathoms.
Eastern Shoal Water of Cape Ann. This is normally considered an integral part of Jeffreys and is
often talked of as West Jeffreys by the anglers. It runs In an ENE. direction from Cape Ann for a
extended distance of from 15 to 18 mls. It is, in fact, a southwest continuation of Jeffreys Ledge, the
two developing a almost continuous ridge running NE. from Cape Ann a distance of approximately
42 a long way. Depths about the so-called Eastern Shoal Drinking water vary from 20 to 45 fathoms,
the base being of rocks, pebbles, and coarse gravel around most of its extent. mud and Sand take
place on the edges. The eastern part of the floor is resorted to by the haddock fleet during the drop
and early on winter, and also other parts are visited more or less during the entire year forcod and
haddock, and pollock by boats and vessels from Cape Ann and by craft of various sorts from Boston
and Portland-line trawlers, gill-netters, and a few of the new type of modest otter trawlers, this
second option fleet of create constantly growing in quantity.
This became considered one of the top minn kota maxxum grounds for haddock and cod in the Gulf
of Maine, but the haddock catch on this page has dropped off recently. Hake are also very abundant
during the summertime and often throughout October in the muddy bottom near the advantage.
Inside 100 fathoms, on a "punkin" underside of stones and pea gravel, near the soil, haddock are
found from Dec to March. Cod, pollock, and cusk occur from May to October, the former on the
rocky and gravelly portions, the latter on the serious soundings, together with the Northeast
Optimum the best summer time ground. This is an specially good winter and fall ground for haddock.
Halibut tend to be found in 35 fathoms (small fish) from Sept . through Nov; also In spring and early
summer. This ground is fished by vessels from Cape Cod, Mass., to Cutler, Me., mainly by trawling,
some palm-coating, but no gill netting of importance as but.
[Table 3--Outside Fishing Grounds, showing the principle types taken on them.]
This shoreline furnishes exceptional mackerel minn kota maxxum during most of the period when
these minn kota maxxum are in northern waters. Basically no gill-netters operate here, the space to
market getting great and the chance of tough weather and the lack of secure harbor rendering it
dangerous for small art. From this expand of shoreline (mostly from off Chatham) there were landed
at Boston in the year 1923, 66 fares with a complete of 1,797,826 pounds priced at $76,875.
Lying about SE. by S. ? 5. from the Isle of Shoals 20 kilometers, 13 miles S. by W. from your
whistling buoy on Jeffreys, and 43 miles S. by W. from Cape Elizabeth is actually a broken
component of bottom having from 75 to 85 fathoms of water over it, which is a haddock ground from
January to April and a hake and cusk ground each of the year.
Maurice Lubee's Terrain. This lies outside of New Ledge (Platts Bank) 47 miles SSE. from the
lightship at Portland. Extending within an ENE. and WSW. direction, its limitations are relatively
indefinite. It is perhaps 8 miles lengthy by 3 miles large and has depths from 95 to 110 fathoms
across a bottom consisting mostly of mud.
Pollock Rip Grounds. These lie between Pollock Rip Lightship and Shovelful Lightship and expand
northward to Pollock Rip Shoal. These grounds are 3 a long way long, E. and W., by 2 miles N. and
S. The depths range from 4 to 12 fathoms. These are fished from Monomoy and also in stormy
conditions from Chatham instead of visiting the Crab Ledge. Late early in the year and at the
beginning of the slip the cod move inshore. In winter the cod depart Pollock Rip for the greater
water.
A ridge telling lies NW. of Cashes Banking institution and practically parallel using the main lender,
only split up by a filter deep route, is about 7 miles lengthy by 1? miles wide. The species and the
months are the same right here as on Cashes Lender.
about and On each one of these shoals the sail fleet makes good catches, mostly consisting of cod
but with a good proportion of pollock, also, and in the deeper h2o close to them, in spring and
summer, a considerable amount of haddock. An occasional big halibut is taken, and in many cases
good catches have been claimed. There were documented in the day-to-day report of your Boston
Species of fish Bureau between Could 15 and August15 and 1920, 10 trips produced by the smaller
vessels of the halibut fleet that landed fares of from 2,000 to ten thousand pounds on this species out
of this area. If the halibut fishery would be followed here as in other areas, perhaps more can be
taken. "Rip angling," as conducted here, is done "at the drift," moving within the shoals and, as they
relocate off from their store, sailing returning to repeat the process. The minn kota maxxum are
undertaken by hand-lining with "cockle" bait or by "jigging" the minn kota maxxum with a shiny
piece of metal representing a herring or similar species of fish, beneath which are establish twin
hooks, the minn kota maxxum being struck after it is felt examining the appeal. This fishery
generally is carried on while in June, Might and July and August. In the mackerel and herring
months these reasons usually provide good angling for these species, the fish usually stunning here
from May 15 to July 15.
Jeffreys Ledge. Of somewhat small sizing, even though jeffreys Ledge might be considered among
the best minn kota maxxum grounds in the Gulf of Maine. It appears to be an extension from the
shoal floor that makes off of in an easterly direction from Cape Ann, it is about 20 mls long in the
NE. and SW. course and about 4 miles wide. Its southern limits is 42? 54' and its upper limit 43?
north latitude; its eastern and western limitations may be positioned at 69? 58' and 70? 18' to the
west longitude. The bottom is rocky on the shoaler parts, with gravel and pebbles around the edges.
Depths on the financial institution are from 27 to 35 fathoms, falling to 40 or 50 on the edges. The
shoalest water is from 4 to 5 miles N. by E. from the buoy, where there is 22 fathoms. Ordinarily
there is very little or no tide, with an occasional present SW. You can find, however, solid westerly
currents with the large easterly winds, and often soon after a period of moderate weather without
strong tides there will suddenly develop a weighty SW. stream, indicating the approach of your
strong northwester. This would seem a general principle in the Gulf of Maine and is, probably,
prevalent around much of our North Atlantic coast.
About the inner elements of this floor, particularly, the gill-net fleet operates extensively, mainly
from the full and spring, on northwest Jeffreys 8 to 12 miles E. and SE. from Thacher Tropical isle,
where the bottom part is beach sand and stones. Other gill-netting grounds are 8 to 15 a long way
NE. by E. from Thacher Tropical island in 22 fathoms on a hard bottom part of dirt and mixed
material of gravel and yellow sand. The Cove of Jeffreys, NE. by E. 12 to 15 miles from Thacher
Tropical isle, is a favored haddock soil in the spring (Apr 20 to May 15) in 45 to 70 or even 80
fathoms, even though gill nets are not usually fished in than 50 fathoms because of the, weight from
the nets in the deeper h2o. In the spring (in May and April), the haddock are available in on
Scantum, 10 miles NNE. from Thacher Island between Jeffreys Ledge as well as the Isle of Shoals,
on the broken underside of stones and glowing blue clay in 55 to 70 fathoms.
Howard Nunans Ridge. Of similar mother nature to the very last, this rises 4 miles inside of and
parallel on it, lying 14 miles from Cape Porpoise on the same bearings (SE. by S. ? S.). This is
apparently made up of two shoals, the northern rising to 50 fathoms water over a rocky, broken
bottom part about 3 miles lengthy by 1 mile broad, deepening southwesterly to a filter, muddy gully,
where are 80 fathoms, and growing again to 60 fathoms over rocks and broken ground. The full
ground is about 8 kilometers long with average widths of from 1 to 1? mls. This floor furnishes good
cod minn kota maxxum and haddocking inside the fall and early winter season and once again in the
spring weeks.
This ridge lies in a SE. and NW. route, extending considerably indefinitely but for at least 10 miles
by about 3 miles in width. In the ridge the base is cracked--a hard base of black color gravel, which
generally means an excellent minn kota maxxum spot--the depths on this page being from 85 to 90
fathoms. There are numerous dirty spots involving these harder pieces of terrain where soundings
run to 100 fathoms or slightly more. The surrounding bottom is generally of mud, and the depths
average from 100 to 125 fathoms. There are a number of pieces of gravelly hard terrain in the
vicinity, each of which probably would furnish similarly good fishing for cod and cusk in the same
periods as around the ridge.
On the ledgecod and haddock, and cusk are taken in the full winter and early springwinter, spring
and perhaps decorating the best minn kota maxxum. There are more or less pollock, and hake
constitute a significant part of the find. In those seasons when herring make their appearance
during these waters the seiners make good grabs here, generally of foods minn kota maxxum, as the
sizeable herring are termed through the trade. The mackerel, also, appear on these grounds as well
as on the smaller reasons nearer to shoreline to northward and westward in good-sized universities,
usually from July 1 through Sept .. For many years the haddock capture from this banking institution
has been of considerable importance, and this assertion remains true for recent years as well.
GEORGES Location
[Footnote 13: There has been some supposition as to the beginning of the somewhat unusual name
of this bank. The writer would note that there was an Edward Tillie from the Company of Captain
John Smith when he explored this region in 1614 as well as a Tilly (perhaps the same man or
woman) who run a angling station at Cape Ann throughout the years 1624 and 1625.]
The Ridge (in the southern a part of Fippenies). This really is SSE. in the light-ship at Portland 75
miles and has a bottom of yellow-colored pebbles and dirtdepths and pebbles of 75 to 95 fathoms.
Most numerous in February and March; haddock in January and December; hake in September and
October, even though cod exist here in January and December; cusk the year about. The length of
this bank is from 4 to 5 miles and the breadth somewhat under 2 mls. It is based on an ENE. and
WSW. direction.
Outer Crab Ledge. The center is situated about 14 miles ESE from Chatham Lights. It extends about
5 or 6 a long way in a N. and S. direction and it is about 1 mile wide. Depths run from 19 to 23
fathoms; the base is difficult. The minn kota maxxum is principally for cod inside the winter, drop
and early spring. Vessel fishing the following is principally early in the year.
Fippenies Bank. This consists of two shoals averaging 80 fathoms in depth using a channel of 90
fathoms between them. These run NE. and SW., the eastern shoal about 8 a long way long by 1
distance wide, the western about half as sizeable. Fippenies bears E. 1/4 S. from Thacher Tropical
island, distant 61 miles; from Portland Lightship, SE. by S. ? S, 57 miles to the european point of the
northern shoal in 35 fathoms. The bank is nearly 10 miles extended NE. and SW. and averages 4?
miles broad. The bottom is ofpebbles and gravel, and clay, possessing depths more than much of the
shoal of approximately 30 fathoms but also from 36 to 60 fathoms. It is fished by the shoreline fleet
early in the year and early summer. The minn kota maxxum and seasons are as on Cashes Bank.
Previously twice as numerous haddock were actually taken in this article as on Cashes or on Platts
Bank, but this has modified in recent years. Halibut are undertaken here in acceptable numbers in
45 to 55 fathom depths inJune and July, and August on the "black pea gravel" of the european and
the southern part of edge. The "white gravel" on the north shoal is of small account like a fishing
ground, because it is composed generally of the shells of old scallops.
This financial institution is now generally an Italian boat floor and is made use of by small craft from
Gloucester and Boston. Gill-netting here is especially extensive in Dec and December, mostly for
pollock. Netters operate about 22 a long way SSE. from Eastern Point in 22 to 25 fathoms on a tough
bottom. Excellent pollock catches are made in 25 to 40 fathoms in the southeastern and eastern
slopes within the latter element of November and early Dec. Haddock are here from November 1 to
March 1 and from April 20 to May 15. Cod are present all the 12 months, the largest college
occurring while in August, September and October. It really is a cusk floor from December to Mar in
the deeper water. What seems a somewhat unusual occurrence within these later many years was
the look of a considerable institution of halibut on the northern slope of Stellwagen during the last
half of April 1926, several small art getting from 2,000 to 3,000 pounds in their fares.
About three-Dory Ridge. Outside of New Ledge and about midway between it and Harvey Blacks
Ridge is a tiny ridge about 3 miles long, working NE. and SW., and about ? mile broad. This is SE. by
S. through the Portland Lightship. 38 a long way to the shoal of 55 fathoms, which happens to be
near its center. Using this the ground ski slopes away on all sides to 65 and 63 fathom depths over
which area the bottom is made up of dirt, sand and gravel and rocks. At these decrease depths are
normally found "water lines" (clay cylinders), in which the minn kota maxxum ends suddenly. All
about the ridge are depths of 80 to 100 fathoms on a bottom of mud. This can be almost completely a
cod ground, great from May to August.
Due E. from the buoy on Ammens Rock and roll about 12 miles is a ridge that soars from the 100 to
120 fathom depths about it to your depth of around 80 fathoms over a base of brokenmud and
terrain, and seashells. This shoaler piece is a few 3 mls long. N. by E. and S. by NW., by 1 mile large.
It furnishes good angling for cod, hake, and cusk in the spring, Apr being the very best season.
A small cove makes for a quick distance in to the western area of Jeffreys Ledge at about 20 miles
from Boon Tropical island in a SE. by S. ? S. path. The bottom from the cove is broken and muddy,
with depths around 60 fathoms. Thence, the soil slopes away to the oral cavity, where the edges
about the entrance are difficult and have 75 and 70 fathom depths. These rocky locations are cusk
grounds inJanuary and February, and March, during which several weeks the cove itself generally
furnishes good haddock fishing. Outdoors these depths the water deepens westward over a muddy
underside, where come from 80 to 90 as well as 100 fathoms of water. Sport fishing here is mainly
by trawl and gill nets.
Jeffreys Ledge bears S. ? W. from the lightship off Portland, 19 kilometers to the northern edge and
22 kilometers S. in the buoy in the Cry and Color to the fringe of the shoal.
The Cod Ridge (formerly Outer Harris Soil). This is placed NE. in the Northeast Top of New Ledge,
distant 7 miles. It extends inside an ENE. and WSW. direction, the ground reducing and the normal
water deepening on the eastward, the shoal floor having 45 fathoms on a bottom of small pebbles
and fine black sand and gravel, depths increasing in every other instructions to 100 fathoms about
the mud and sloping off somewhat steeply, especially in the southeast aspect, where the decline is
very sharp. The length of the earth is about 5 miles, the width 1 mile. This is an all-the-year cod
ground, the season of greatest great quantity being from May 1 to Nov. The haddock are usually
With their greatest amounts here from January 1 to April. Apparently no large number of cusk or
hake are considered here around the ridge, perhaps because the h2o is not strong enough to the
former, apart from the small fish, that happen to be of tiny value for the fishermen; along with the
ground is just not muddy sufficient for the second option species. Both types, however, are normally
found about the edges in the serious water, the cusk around the sharpest, most challenging part of
the base (perhaps most popular in Feb . and March), the hake, as usual, about the muddy pieces
about it.
Jerry Yorks Ridge. This lies just inside and paralleling Jeffreys Ledge WNW. from its shoal water
contributing to 5 kilometers distant in the ledge and approximately 18 kilometers SE. by S. ? S. from
Cape Porpoise. This ground has from 45 to 48 fathoms water on a rocky broken bottom part. It is
about 5 kilometers long, NNE. and SSW., and averages 1? a long way wide. This is a good cod and
haddock ground Inside the fall or higher to Jan, these species of fish coming back here early in the
year months.
Stellwagen Bank also called Midst Bank. This separates Massachusetts Bay from the open water of
the Gulf of Maine and expands from in close proximity to Cape Ann nearly to Cape Cod. The center
of this ground bears S by E ? E from Thacher N and Tropical isle by W ? W from Highland Light-
weight, Cape Cod. The The southern part of Part of the Lender is distant 5? kilometers from Race
Point Cape Cod, as well as its northwest prong reaches to within 12 or 15 miles of Eastern Position
Cape Cod. The shoaler portion, with depths from 9? to 19 fathoms, is 17? miles very long in a N by W
and S by E path and has a width of 4 a long way. This portion is sandy but the eastern slope, in
depths of from 25 to 55 fathoms, includes coarse fine sand gravel and pebbles. On this gravelly slope
haddock and cod have been taken plentifully over a lasting of several years, the cod in the tumble
and early spring and the haddock in the winter months. About the southern conclusion of the bank
and between this and Race Stage cod abound in winter and fall. The complete bank is also a
mackerel ground when the minn kota maxxum happen to be in these seas, the best in the season
averaging to be from July 15 through Sept.
This can be essentially a cod soil for the entire 12 months, the varieties being most abundant from
May 1 to December. It is a cusk ground all of the year about the hard base of the greater April,
March and elements showing the biggest schools. Hake also are numerous in 70 fathoms and deeper
on the mud in summer and fall.
Evidently the great quantity of cod on this terrain is due to the great quantity of shrimps and
delicate-shelled crabs located on the muddy bottom part and on the rocks that compose this ground.
There seem to be several of these deep-water reasons between contributing to the shoaler grounds,
as close to Cashes, Fippenies, and Jeffreys, which apparently serve as fairways over that the schools
of hake, cod, and cusk, move from Georges Lender into the Gulf of Maine in the spring of the year.
Harvey Blacks Ridge. This is certainly SE. ? S. from the lightship off Portland, distant 42 miles, and
SE. from New Ledge, distant 8 miles. From Glovers Rock, off Tiny Point, Me. this ridge lies SE. by S.
? S. 41 miles. It extends in an ENE. and WSW. route about 4 miles long by I mile large. Depths
regular 70 to 100 fathoms over a bottom part of yellowish gravel and clay. Cod are taken on this
page all the season. Haddock are found in the deep water early in the year: cusk all the year in deep
h2o, together with hake in summer season, also in the muddy underside in strong water. Pollock and
other area-schools minn kota maxxum are found in their suitable season.
Big Ridge (near Cashes Bank). This is a broken and rocky piece of bottom operating from the idea of
the southeastern part of the soil, at about 10 mls S. through the buoy on Ammens Rock and about 82
miles SE. ? S. from the lightship at Portland, to a degree about 20 miles S. by E. from the buoy
named. Its length is just not to be reported definitely, which is probably more than here
demonstrated. The width averages about 1? to 2 mls. Depths come from 65 to 80 fathoms and more,
improving gradually because it goes from the main banking institution. The varieties and their
conditions of large quantity here are as on Cashes Bank. Possibly this is a greater portion of a cod
and cusk ground than is the principal part of Cashes Bank, the cusk simply being particularly
abundant during Mar and April. Halibut also are found in June and May in from 50 to 60 fathoms
water. A considerable amount of the fish shown in the table of the catch through the area
incorporated into Cashes Lender may adequately have come from this piece of floor.
Cusk are plentiful right here in the spring, with some in the tumble. Cod are taken all of the year
close to, the Springtime school getting the largest. Hake are most numerous Inside the spring and
fall months, and haddock will not be common but they are most quite a few in winter.
Southeast Jeffreys. Off the southeast edge of Jeffreys, about 24 miles SE. from Benefit Island, is
placed a piece of angling soil having a tough bottom ofsand and gravel, and stones, where depths
slope out gradually through the 50-fathom soundings near the primary body in the bank on the 90-
fathom symbol farther out. This area is a great ground for cod and haddock in the spring and winter
and a hake soil in March. This angling area is about 3 or 4 miles rectangular and is bounded on all
but the european side by muddy underside, which is of little worth as a minn kota maxxum terrain.
Usually there may be good haddocking in Mar on the outside of Jeffreys, on its southeastern edge as
well as in the cove between it and Tillies in 60 and 70 fathom depths on a broken and muddy bottom
part. This area lies SE ? from the Isle of Shoals, 27 mls to the center.
A comparatively little known and evidently as nevertheless unnamed ridge lies E. by S. 15 kilometers
from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, which happens to be reported to be great minn kota maxxum
ground, especially for cod and cusk. With both varieties present right here the year all around, the
cod is reported to be most abundant in April and May: along with the cusk, as they are the principle
on these outlying ridges, appears in largest figures in Mar and Apr. Haddock seem to be fairly rare
in this article.
Off Newburyport and N. and SW. of your Isle of Shoals are gill-netting grounds that are significantly
used. Trawling and netting are carried on, beginning in 40 fathoms in February and March and
working away and off to 70 fathoms off Salisbury Bench in May. Cod are on this ground about two
weeks in October and then in Mar and Feb are found in abundance away Boars Brain. Hake are
present here all the fall and they are found all along the southeast side of the grounds in depths of
45 to 60 fathoms. A certain amount of halibut may be taken in most yrs at different points on a
bottom of hard pea gravel in early spring and early summer in 35 to 65 fathoms. In most several
years a large amount of mackerel is taken on Jeffreys, notably so in 1925. Herring, also, are usually
abundant within "herring years".
A little shoal inside the western portion of the Cove of Jeffreys, experiencing 50 fathoms over a
underside of glowing blue clay and rocks and rising from the 60 and 70 fathom soundings about it, is
all about 1? kilometers long by about 3/4 mile wide. This shoal is SSE. from Benefit Island 15 miles.
It is actually a winter soil for haddock and cod.
Wild Pet cat Ridge. Extremely heavy tides sweep above this floor, making it difficult to haul gear in
sport fishing on it, whence, it is said, is available the name. It is placed NNE from Highland Gentle,
Cape Cod, 18 kilometers to its southern edge; SE ? S from Thacher Tropical island 31 a long way;
and is about 7? mls long inside a north and south direction by about 3? miles broad. The bottom is
hard, of shattered shells and sand, and depths come from 45 to 60 fathoms. There are 100 fathom
depths inside of the floor and from 100 to 110 fathoms outside of it. Apparently, it is really an all the
season ground for cod, cusk, and haddock, although but little fished at any time aside from the
winter months.
Another major ridge, paralleling the 100-fathom curve of Georges Financial institution at about 20
miles N. of this, lies SE by S from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, forty miles to its center; SE by S 110
miles from Portland Lightship; ESE 92 mls from Cape Ann to the western stop, and E. by S. ? S. from
the ship at Boston 100 miles. This ridge also is of fairly indefinite place, being maybe 20 a long way
long within an ESE by WNW path by 1? to three a long way wide. Evidently depths are fairly
standard from 85 to 95 fathoms, the base of the ridge being of coarse black colored sand and having
blue dirt in the further area around it. This is reported to be a good cod and cusk ground the entire
year round.
