Foreword
The Renewable Energy Strategy, published in July 2009, sets
out the pathway to 2020, outlining an action plan for meeting
the ambitious and challenging targets for generating a full
15% of all our primary energy from renewable sources.
Wind power is set to continue to lead in the delivery of these objectives with a
combination of both on- and off-shore assets expected to contribute more than
two-thirds of the renewable electricity component. This is likely to see an additional
21GW of wind energy capacity installed within the next 11years and a lot of this
potential sits in the North West of England.
Alongside such large growth comes big opportunities around 100 billion worth
of inward investment and the creation of up to half a million jobs but also
some very big challenges. Whilst wind power is one of the most cost-effective and
mature renewable electricity technologies, there remain some significant barriers
to development at the scale required. Central to the task is the need to stimulate
a supply chain that is able to meet the demands of such a rapidly growing industry.
The North West region offers a diverse and highly competent workforce, which is
underpinned with the experience and knowledge of more than a decade of both
on- and off-shore infrastructure developments across the region.
There is no doubt that the North West has the capability to rise to the challenge
of the 2020 vision and I am pleased to introduce this Envirolink Northwest
publication. We hope it will assist you in locating and approaching business
partners for the mutual benefit of both wind energy developers and the vital
supply chain companies whose contribution is pivotal to achievement of our
shared objectives.

Envirolink Northwest works to strengthen the renewable energy
sector in Englands Northwest. This directory provides details
of organisations based in the region with the skills and expertise
to make your wind energy project a success.
As the UK embraces the true potential of wind energy, the North West of
England is aiming to exploit its excellent resources, capabilities and infrastructure
to take an integral role in helping to meet the UK renewable energy targets.
Once the birthplace of the industrial revolution with a strong industrial heritage
and pioneering spirit, the North West is now ideally situated to cultivate the new
generation of renewable energy technologies.
The role of this directory is to promote the capabilities of regional companies
within the wind supply chain, while providing wind farm developers with a ready
reference point to the expertise in the North West.
