The 0 km Stone statue is situated on the Clark Adam square. In


Hungary the road distances are measured from this point. In !"#$
%ikl&s 'orsos created this ( m high limestone statue. The
'uda)*r +unicular ,ift can also -e found on this place$ -ut .e
can ha)e a magnificent )ie. on the Chain 'ridge and the Angel
em-lem is also situated on the .all of the castle.

The 'odor3.ell is situated on the north side of the %argaret
Island$ its name is originated from a S80kely 1ack of all
trades$ 90ter 'odor. The master made the .ell in 640 to the
people of %aros)*s*rhely. :n the Island$ the .ell .hich is
the replica of the original$ .as -uilt in !(5.
;e also call it as musical3.ell -ecause it plays tunes e)ery
hour. The original .as sounded -y a machine dri)en -y
.ater. The gilt <eptun statue on the dome .ent round under
a sun on the top of the .ell.

Centenary monument for the union of


Pest-Buda
At the south entrance of the %argaret Island =at the
%argaret 'ridge>$ in front of the -ig fountain can -e found
the statue .hich .as made for the 00th anni)ersary of the
unification of 'udapest. According to the la. to unify the
three cities =9est$ 'uda$ ?-uda> .hich .as decided in
6"4$ the to.ns .hich .ere till then separated$ e2ist
together from st @anuary 6"(. as 'udapest. The real
unification of the capital .as only "th <o)em-er 6"($
-ecause the ne. administration started to .ork from this

Chain Bridge
The ("# metres long -ridge is the oldest one in the capital B
older then 'udapest itself as it .as esta-lished only in 6"4
.ith the union of 'uda$ 9est and ?-uda. 'et.een the t.o
to.ns B 'uda and 9est B there used to -e an interim turning3
-ridge$ than a pontoon3-ridge -ut these -ecame una-le to
fulfill the needs of the capital. The construction of the Chain
'ridge is -ound to the name of Ist)*n S80chenyi$ .ho .as a
rich aristocrat of the period. The -ridge .as -uilt -et.een
!(! and !7!$ its entrances are guarded -y t.o lions made

.hile assaulting 'udapest$ the traffic restarted only in

-ridge in 'udapestD it creates a connection -et.een the
former city central around the castle and 9est. :n the occasion of festi)als the -ridge is
floodlighted$ this time the stone pillars illuminate like torches in the 'udapest night.
Fishermans Bastion
The +ishermanEs 'astion is one of the most famous points of the
'uda Castle$ .hich .as set up -y +rigyes Schulek in !03
!04. Here used to stand the -astions of a former fishermenEs
guild in the %iddle Ages. The <eoromanesque style -astion3line
ne)er had defending functionsD it is more likely to -e a piece of
decoration .hich gi)es a nice frame for the CastleEs -uilding
and ser)es as a staircase up to the Castle Area. :n the occasion

of festi)als the .hite -astion is sparkling in the floodlightD its domed$ lacy corridors make it
look like a fairy3tale castle$ .hich can -e seen from the .hole eastern side of the Fanu-e.
'oth the +ishermanEs 'astions itself and the super- panorama opening from here attract

the main column the memorial of heroes and martyrs of the

Fanu-e. The reconstruction of the steps is planned to -e

to the top. Kight after the start tourists can find the statue of

The enormous palace of the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences is a fascinating endpoint of our .alking trip at the

StNhler$ an architect of Lienna. The huge -ron8e relief on
the Akad0mia Street side of the -uilding sho.s Ist)*n
S80chenyi founding the Academy. The Hungarian
Academy of Sciences is the most important cultural
institute of our country$ the centre of the intellectual life.
The inside decorations are .orthy of this glorious institute.
The aula is co)ered -y the paintings from A*roly ,ot8
.hile the .alls of the smaller rooms are decorated .ith
Antal ,igetiEs landscapes. ;ith its !00 thousand pieces of
-ook stock the Academic ,i-rary has one of the richest
collections in Hungary. ,ots of )alua-le printings$ codices
and manuscripts from classical .riters are held here. The famous Coethe room$ LHrHsmarty
room and the S80chenyi museum .as destroyed in ;orld ;ar II.
Today the Academy has ten departments$ and according to its constitution the num-er of

The Hungarian <ational %useum .as founded -y +erenc
S80chenyi in 604 .ho offered his collection of # thousand
-ooks$ 4 thousand printings and one thousand )alua-le
manuscripts to the <ation. The museum palace .as designed
-y the great Hungarian architect$ %ih*ly 9ollack. The 06
metres long and "0 metres .ide museum .as -uilt -et.een
6(" and 67". Iight Corinthian columns hold the
neoclassical frontage .hich is decorated -y allegoric figures.
In %arch # of !76 S*ndor 9etGfi recited his poem B the
<ational Hymn =<em8eti dal> B at the main staircase of the
museum. This occasion is rendered on a memorial ta-let in
the .all of the stairs. In the inner staircase 9*l Las)*riEs
relief .as placed$ .ho .as a leader of the youth in 676 and
.ho died in the ;ar of Independence.
The Hungarian <ational %useum holds the countryEs largest
and most significant historical$ natural scientific$ mineralogical and archeological collection.

Hungary. The construction of the Komanesque style church

army at <*ndorfeh0r)*r .as announced. Aing %atthias
=%*ty*s> held his .edding ceremony here .ith his first and
second .i)es$ Aatalin 9od1e-rad and 'etri2. =The church
.as named after the kingEs .edding>. The Turkish
conquerors also held the -uilding in great respectD Sultan
Suleiman ga)e the thanksgi)ing ceremony here in #7 after
the occupation of 'uda Castle.
In the #th century the church .as reconstructed and since

Shoes on the /ank of the @anu/e
statue &omposition
This statue composition can -e found on the do.n3quay of
9est$ close to the 9arliament. It .as inaugurated on the 5th
April 400# on the 9est side of the ri)er Fanu-e. This
monument commemorates to those .ho .here shot in to the
Fanu-e in !7737# -y the Hungarian na8i. Cyula 9auer$ .ho
.on the Aossuth3pri8e and Can Togay put into shape 50
pairs of period shoes made of iron =from the 70s>. 'ehind the
shoes mounted to the quarry stone of the -order of the -ank$
runs a 70 metres long stone -ench.

St0 Stephans Basili&a
HungaryEs largest religious -uilding has a capacity for
admitting 6#00 people. Its cupola is !5 metres tall and 44
metres in diameter. 'et.een 67# and 67" @&8sef Hild
started to -uild it and he .as the one .ho directed the
constructions -et.een 6## and 65". In 656 the cupola
.as collapsed. After the death of Hild$ %ikl&s S-l continued
the constructions -ased on his o.n planning yet the pro1ect
.as finished -y @&8sef Aauser. According to the general
opinion the floodlighting of the 'asilica is insufficient. Fue
to this circumstance the academic statues of the -uilding are
nearly al.ays hidden$ they sparkle mysteriously at night. In
the inside .e can find masterpieces from the most significant
Hungarian painters. The statue of the templeEs patron saint$
St. Stephen B made -y Ala1os St&-l 3 stands -ehind the high

mosaics of the church .ere made in a .orkshop in Lenice -ased on the planning of

The Holy Kight is the right hand remained intact of Stephen
I. Furing the discord for the throne after the death of Saint
Stephen$ the chapter of +eh0r)*r .as .orried for that the
dead -ody might -e desecrated so that he made set out the
-ody of the mar-le sarchopagus of the 'asilica and hid it in
to the gra)eyard. At this moment the mummified right hand
.as detached and carried to the treasury of the -asilica. The
custodian of the treasury$ %erkur appropriated and hid it. In

Statue of %nonymus
The statue can -e found in the TIL district$ in L*rosliget$ on
the S80chenyi3Island =La1dahunyad castle>. The $!m high
-ron8e statue .as made in !0( -y %ikl&s ,igeti. The
Anonymus is a ,atin .ord$ it means nameless in
translation. ;e call like this that history author .ho .rote the prehistory and the settlement of
the Hungarians in his creation called Cesta Hungarorum$ -ut .e ha)e no more further
information neither of his name nor of his personality.
'udapest$ L*rosliget
The Buda Castle
The foundations of the old castle .ere laid -y IL. '0la in
4##. The old fortress .as replaced -y a palace during the
reign of Aing and Imperor Usigmond =(6"37("> .hich
.as -roadened -y Aing %*ty*s =7#637!0>. Furing the
#03year Turkish occupation the palace fell into ruin then
Hille-randt reconstructed it in 'aroque style during the reign
of %*ria Ter08ia ="703"60>. The ne. -uilding could also
not a)oid its destinyD it .as destroyed in the conflagration
after the assault of 67!. The reconstruction made at the turn
of the century hid totally the old .alls .hich turned up again
only later. The construction .as finished in !07 according
to the plans of %ikl&s S-l and Ala1os Haus8mann. At the
end of ;orld ;ar II Cerman troops .ere pushed here and
after the assault of 'udapest the palace -urnt totally do.n.
At the present time three ma1or museums and the S80chenyi Ist)*n ,i-rary operates in it.
Among the curiosities of the li-rary the (4 pieces of Cor)ina$ the 9ray3code2$ the Cestas of
Anonymus and the S8enci3Code2 can -e found here as .ell. The -ook stock of Aossuth$ Fe*k
and other leading figures of the Hungarian history are held in a separate collection.

The Citadella at "ellert $ill
The Citadella$ the fortress on the top of the Cell0rt Hill$
.hich .as set up after the repressing of the .ar of

Cell0rt Hill .ith the Castle Hill$ the panorama of the t.o
sides of the ri)er Fanu-e .ere pronounced to -e part of the

The 440 meters long$ .ith 435 meters high .alls .as -uilt
-y @ulius @ako- Haynau. Its speciality is that out of an
ordinary fortress$ it .asnEt constructed to protect the to.n
-elo.$ -ut on the contraryO the rule of the Citadella =the
citadella is an Italian .ord$ it means fortification$ .hich is
similar to a castle$ -uilt on high ground or defensi-le parts
compassed around .ith .alls on the highest point of the
city> .as to intimidate the people of 9est. The
emplacements$ .hich turn to.ards the to.n$ also certify
these facts$ -ut fortunately the guns .ere used only for firing
salutes.
After the e2periences of the siege of 'uda castle in 67!$ the court3martial of Lienna came to
a decision that instead of the 'uda castle .hich .as -ehind the times$ a .ell3defensi-le
system of fortress had to -e -uilt around 'udapest 3 its aim .as to put a check on the
Hungarian people -eing disposed to re)olutions. Its first fortification .as esta-lished on the
Cell0rt3Hill in 6#0 =+erenc @&8sef emperor authorised 400000 +orint to co)er the costs>.
According to the plans$ -ehind the -attlements of the 440 meters long$ 50 meters .ide$ 7
meters thick .alls to defend the fortress$ 50 modern guns could -e located. +our years later$
the Austrian army could march in the casemates .hose guns looked darkly to.ards the 9est
side of the Fanu-e. The other parts of the fortress ha)e ne)er -een -uilt. ;ith the accord of
65"$ the military aim of the Citadella .as lost$ -ut the army left the fortress only in 6!!.
Its last use for military actions .as to protect 'udapest in !7737# during the Second ;orld
;ar against the Ked Army$ .hen the fortress ser)ed as anti3aircraft -ase for the Cermans and
Hungarians$ in its casemates storages and in1ured3centre .ere created. Furing the -attles$ the
defensi)e parts .ere damaged and those signs can -e seen e)en today.
+rom the 50s$ the fortress has -een gi)en a tourism role thatEs .hy it .as transformedO a hotel
and a restaurant .ere opened there. Its main charm in great part due to the .onderful sight
from its .allsO the )ie. of the e2tending city under the mountain is really impaired.
The ,i-erty Statue is situated on the Iastern part of the Citadella. <o. a restaurant and a
hotel are running on the territory of the citadella$ and a .a2.orks a-out the siege of !77 can
-e seen in the casemates. The 'udapest anno =means 'udapest long ago> photo e2hi-ition
sho.s the pictures of 'udapest in the !th century =-et.een 6#0 and !7#>$ it can -e )isited
.ithout entrance fees.

The do.nto.n 9arish church is situated at %*rcius #
square at 'udapest$ it .as -uild on the .alls of the fortress
of Contra Aquincum. This is the oldest -uilding of 9est. In
075 Cell0rt -ishop .as -uried here. In 47 the Tartars
-urnt the city$ the people of 9est .ere killed cruelly in the

church$ .here they assem-led to pray.
In the 7th century .ith the support of king Sigismund it
.as re-uilt in gothic style. Mnder the rule of king %atthias
the church .as e2tended .ith t.o other aisles. The
sou)enir of the Turk era$ .hen it .as used as a mosque$ is
the mihra- =prayersE cham-er> in the south3eastern .all of
the sanctuary. The -aroque style reno)ation passed off
-et.een "4#3"(! under the leading of @*nos CyHrgy
9auer =5!43"#4>$ .ho .as a Cerman -orn architect.
In our days the outside of the church is neglected$ in spite of that it .as reno)ated se)eral
timesO -et.een 60# and 606$ @*nos Hild$ in 66! Imre Steindl$ after !7# ,*s8l& CerG .ere
the leaders of the restorations. The paintings of the internal of the church .ere reno)ated in
!"53"".
According to the rumours$ at time of the -uilding of the Ilisa-eth -ridge$ the church had to -e
relocated. This isnEt true$ at the construction arose the question of displacing the church$ -ut
finally the church .as emerged .ith the a2le of the -ridge.

The Furni&ular +ift
This 00 metres long lane opened in 6"0. The concept

to !07$ -ased on the planning of Imre Steindl. The
enormous -uilding is 456 metres long and 6 metres .ide.

entrances. At the outside the -uilding is decorated -y 66
statuesD at the Fanu-e side they represent Hungarian
monarchs from the se)en leaders to Aing L. +erdinand$

stands at the place of the 9remontre pro)ostry founded
-efore 44# -y the king$ keeps the memory of the rich$
medie)al monastic relics.
The area destroyed after the Turk ages .as e2ca)ated -y
A*lm*n ,u2 and he made -uilt up the 9remontre chapel
.hich )estry stands at the place of the chapel of the TL
century. The 9remontre pro)ostry might -e founded -y
Andr*s II. on the Island of Hares -efore 44#. :ne3na)e$
arch3typed closing church -elonged to the small3si8ed
pro)ostry. :n its place$ pre)iously e2isted a church
consecrated to St. %ichael. At first$ they got significant donations$ -ut later they diminished
importantly -ecause of the e2pansion of the Fominican nun monastery. +inally the sisterhood
got the .hole area of the island$ the premontre array had only the monastery itself.
In the TLth century$ there .as a chapel ne2t to the monastery too. The 9remontre pro)ostry
.as left in #45 -ecause of the Turks$ after this the -uilding .as demolished. The remains

The Trinity statue of 'udapest is situated in the first district
on the Trinity square$ in front of the %atthias church. The
