On June 10 the Alberta SPCA took 65 animals from

a foster home in Gleichen operating through the
Oops-a-Dazy Rescue and Sanctuary Society. The society had until June 20 to reach an agreement with
the SPCA to reclaim the animals.
As of June 20 that agreement had been made, and
the animals were returned with the society paying
the costs of the custody of the animals, which was
mostly the boarding costs, and there were some vet
fees.
My understanding is that by the end of yesterday
( June 23) I think they had the 42 dogs back. They
told us they are not going back to the same property we took them from and so our officers will be
a receiving a list of locations that they are going to,
said Roland Lines, communications manager for the
Alberta SPCA.
The officers will follow up with a check of the new
properties, but will not be keeping track of the animals past the initial check.
Three of the dogs were returned to their owner,
who had brought them to the society after being displaced by the flood last year. The cats, however, did
not have the same fate.
The 20 cats were all euthanized for medical reasons, said Lines.
The cats were all members of our sanctuary program, which allows safe, loving homes for animals
with chronic medical conditions. They were well
cared for and given the opportunity to live great
lives under the supervision of our veterinarians, said
Christine Campbell, chairperson with the Oops-a-Dazy board of directors in an e-mail response.
Unfortunately, the ABSPCA does not share our nokill philosophy and they chose to euthanize all of
the cats. We are heartbroken because the cats were
happy and ABSPCA informed me that they felt they
had safe, clean conditions. We dont feel that it is
right to euthanize due to manageable disabilities unless the animal is in pain.
The society is now looking for a few more foster
homes to help with respite care and be back-ups in
case homes dont work out. Campbell said the society is especially looking for a farm or acreage-based
foster home that can accommodate Willow, a malamute who does much better with a country lifestyle.
She has a temporary foster home, but we hope
she will find her a forever home soon. In the meantime, we continue to search for a foster home who
can take her for longer term, said Campbell.

All the students enjoyed

a wonderful BBQ lunch
provided by Agrium. They
watched a great trick rider
perform (Kristie Rougeau
who currently teaches Grade
3 at Standard school), and
the rest of the afternoon was
spent playing various games
and mingling with the students from the other schools.
The students marked out
the perimeter of the school
standing side-by-side for a
historical picture of the day
that was taken by an aerial
drone after they unveiled the
sign.
Responses from students
that were present were that
of excitement.
I like seeing that we
will have new options, new
teachers and I am so excited
that Im counting down the
hours to 2016, said Garrett
Fandry (age 11 from Hussar).
Ive been going to Standard school for five years
and Im looking forward to
closer knit communities and
excited about the expanded
programming that will be

offered, said Faith Neumann (age 14 from Standard

school).
Im excited to have a bigger school, happy that they
are finally making us a new
school with new equipment
and lots of teachers, said
Mackenzie Jensen (age 11
from Rockyford]).
This is a fun day history in the making and Im
kind of a little excited, said
Thea Koester (age 11 from
Rockyford).
This is really cool and Im
surprised by the number of
kids I already know from
Standard. Im looking forward to new friends, said
Morgan Peake (age 11 from
Hussar).
Im excited to have more
kids in my class and meet
new friends, said Lucia
Dahm (age 10 from Rockyford school).
At the end of the day the
students returned to their
respective schools in East
Wheatland, dreaming of all
that is to come with their
new school with a tentative
opening in 2016.

Investigation still ongoing

Continued from Page 1

The investigation is still ongoing by the SPCA into the initial conditions found at the property from which the animals
were taken. For now, though, Oops-a-Dazy members are
over the moon excited about being reunited with the dogs,
and Campbell said they will remember the very special cats.
Oops-a-Dazy is also looking for approximately 20 foster
homes for another group of cats that come from a feral colony at a food bank in Southern Alberta. The cats have tested
positive for a parasite and will need treatment for two weeks
and monitoring for four weeks. Campbell said anyone who
would like to be a part of saving their lives can contact her
directly at 403-612-3011 or at Christine@oopsadazy.com.
The cats are expected to make a full recovery with treatment but need to be kept separated from other cats until
they test negative for the parasite. Studies show that the
parasite does not pose a risk to dogs or people with normal
immune systems.

One year later

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Many people on the Siksika nation
felt the ill effects of the dreadful floods
that hit Southern Alberta one year ago
when the rivers raged on June 20. Community Resource Worker Randy D. Alexander can attest to the disaster that
hit his family dearly as their home on
the reserve was full of water and on the
verge of being washed away. However,
Alexander did not leave when asked to
but instead stayed back and wanted to
slowly rebuild the home and clean what
the flood had left around the property.
He reflected on the difficult times
that his family had to endure and how
the recovery has been a year later.
My first thought was where are we
going to go, what are we going to do,
my baby my wife, said Alexander.
Therefore, with his thoughts he had
to keep his emotions in check, as he
did not want his family to think that
he did not have the strength to support
them.
I had to keep my sanity because I
was the father, provider, and could not

let my wife and children know that I

was worried and be strong for them.
Alexander noted that it was no easy
feat to keep the homes safe. Out of
a community of 25, only nine moved
home after the floods.
Thats the sad part but the positive is
that we all keep each other informed,
said Alexander.
When the flood hit the reserve, Alexander was blessed to know that there
were people out there looking out for
one another.
We did a lot of praying and were
spiritually safe and strong and managed
to stay in our home, said Alexander.
A year later, the recovery process has
been a prolonged one; however, with
everyone working together it would
seem as though the Siksika Nation is
recovering better than expected.
The positive part is we learn to prepare for the next one and learn to save
for a rainy day when a flood happens,
said Alexander.
The flood really opened up his senses to realize this is what Mother Nature
has the power to do. When asked about
any precautionary measures that have

been taken this year, our leadership

has not done anything so far, we have
no sandbags; in the long run nothing
was ever really done and we do not
leave anything in the basement now,
said Alexander.
Alexander, the rest of Siksika nation
and many southern Albertans will be
watching water levels and keeping an
eye on the sky to stay aware and hopefully next time around prevent a disaster like the one a year ago.

Prairie Mountain Health Authority

bridges communication gap
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

It is often said that someone sitting on the outside looking
in has a unique perspective of what is actually happening. A
little publicized health care voice, advocating for this areas
health issues, hopes to bring that skill home to communities
and Alberta Health Services (AHS).
A member from the Prairie Mountain Health Authority
came to make their presence known in Wheatland County
council on June 10.
I am very excited to be here at council, to get the word
out about the Prairie Mountain Health Authority, said Chairman Larry Albrecht. You are one of the first councils who
have asked us to come out and present.
Albrecht said Prairie Mountain Health Authority - Zone 2,
is one of 12 authorities in the province. Their area of response covers west from Banff, to Gleichen east, Didsbury
north, to Claresholm south. Each zones role is to go out into
the public, rotate open meetings throughout their area, to
engage with the public on health issues and generate ideas
of what can be done to improve quality and accountability
in the health care system. The group then reports back to
Alberta Health Services (AHS) with the public concerns.
Albrecht said they have developed good communication
channels that promote activity by the province. They are not
paid by AHS and remain independent from AHS to eliminate
bias, or concerns about control. Prairie Mountain Health Authority is not a decision-making body, nor do they advocate
for individual problems or lobby groups, but Albrecht said

they do give highly-considered information that is used by

AHS in decision making processes.
We are that public voice that delivers information to Alberta Health Services at senior levels, said Albrecht. We
dont want to be perceived as a government body, but we
are happy to say we have the ministers ear, said Albrecht.
Albrecht said AHS is massive and constantly under flux,
which often makes it difficult for the public to address their
issues and see results. By participating in the open discussion sessions and surveys, Albertans have a chance to make
their concerns known.
Some of the issues discussed in 2013 were communication
processes, scopes of practice, patient care safety, primary
care networks and the confusion over the development of
family care clinics, worker compensation forms, cancer treatments, staff and physician feedback processes, workforce
strategies, laboratory services, transportation services, and
seniors health.
There are also special speakers on health care issues, and
in the 2013 report the group indicated a desire to expand
their contact to include non-English speaking communities.
Albrecht said they are also looking for more rural members
to serve with the authority, as they try to make the panels
as diverse as possible so they may respond to diverse needs.
Our conversations are diverse and urban and rural populations are represented, said Albrecht.
For more information on their organization and the schedule for open meetings, check out www.albertahealthservices.ca/1818.asp or e-mail (prairiemountain@albertahealthservices.ca).

Canada Day at Kinsmen Park

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The time is almost here once again
to celebrate our heritage and our countrys birthday. Each year festivities are
planned for Canada Day at Kinsmen
Park, and this year is no different.
The fun begins with the annual pancake breakfast by the Strathmore Fire
Department from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Following breakfast at 11 a.m. is the
flag raising ceremony and the singing of
Oh Canada. Throughout the day there
will be bouncy castles set up for the
kids to play in, face painting, airbrush
tattoos, caricatures, balloon twisters, a
magician, birthday cake at noon, a petting zoo and a photo booth.
The Strathmore Theatre Players will
also be putting on performances at the
park.
They are calling them spontaneous
plays in the park, so they are not scheduled times, they are just when theres
people around, said Tracy Simpson,
community services coordinator for the
town.
Graydon Pease will be the MC for the
day, and five local bands will be on the
stage keeping the crowds entertained.
The bands and musicians are Syka-

more at 3 p.m., Undead Drifters at 4

p.m., Dallas Larsen at 5 p.m., Pulse, who
are returning for their 22 year at 6 p.m.
and Inkahoots will be on stage at 9 p.m.
Throughout the day, at times that will
be announced on July 1, Pranava Yoga
studio will be offering free classes in the
park. There will be community booths
and vendors set up also, and who could
forget the infamous dunk tank, from
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where you will get a
chance to try and dunk Staff Sgt. Kevin
Reilly, Mayor Michael Ell, Councillor Pat
Fule, Strathmore Times publisher Mario
Prusina and many others.
Theres also a watermelon eating contest at 1 p.m., which is always a great
way to cool off on a hot day. Lastly the
night will end with fireworks at 11 p.m.
The event is completely free except
for food and beverages, any activity is
free to the public with only one exception which is the dunk tank which is by

It is a great, inexpensive way to

heard from people who come out from

When fierce weather hit Southern
Alberta last June, many people were
devastated in some capacity. Flooding caused extensive damage to many
parts of the province and none more
devastating than parts of the Siksika
Nation. The extensive damage from the
flood washed out the resort and many
houses that the First Nations residents
had lived in. Many that lived on that
reserve felt agony and the pain of what
they witnessed in the flooding. The
nearby HD Cartwright School decided
to take matters into their own hands
by donating clothing and food to those
affected. Principal Teresa Martin was
behind the idea and was rewarded for

Some children experience motion sickness while
traveling in cars. There are ways to minimize this by
having the child focus on things outside the car, using
a pillow to keep the head still, providing adequate
air ventilation. Depending on the childs age, some
medications may help. Some people swear by those
acupressure wrist bands. They are non-medicated.
Check with our pharmacists for advice.
If a nose bleed occurs while traveling (or at
anytime), tilt the head forward and pinch the soft part
of the nostrils for 5 minutes. If the nosebleed still
hasnt stopped, do it for another 5 minutes and if it
still hasnt stopped, get medical attention.
One tip to see if your body has been getting enough
fluid is to check the colour of your urine. If its a
dark yellow, you probably need to drink more water.
During the hot days of summer, its important to
drink more water since we lose a lot of fluid through
sweating.
People who have adopted a slovenly lifestyle for
decades often feel its too late to change their health
for the better. Not so! Just paying attention to four
key healthy habits can change your health for the
better no matter what your age. These habits are:
eating five or more fruits and vegetables daily, not
smoking, exercising (even walking) 30 minutes per
day five days per week, and keeping your weight in
the healthy range. When you think of it, its not much.
But your heart will thank you!

The Lets make a Pitch event held at the Civic
Centre on June 19, took $500 and spun it into
multiple counts of community spirit.
Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford
offered up prize money he won at an economic
development workshop and it was matched with
donations from the Town of Strathmore, individuals and businesses around Strathmore, to give
$10,000 for a winning idea to improve the town
of Strathmore.
Everyone can do a little more than they are
and guess who wins Strathmore, said Brett
Wilson, one of the judges for the night.
Six non-profit agencies were in the lineup to
pitch their idea to judges Brett Wilson, Ron Renaud and Beerd Beekman. While the judges were
kind and didnt rain down the criticisms that are
a regular occurrence on the TV show Dragons
Den, they did query the contestants on considering the details involved in making their plans
actually work.
Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale, Mayor Michael Ell, Strathmore Councillor Brad Walls, and
Wheatland County Councillor Berniece Bland as
well as other local councillors were at the event.
Hale presented a plaque to the winner, Hope

Bridges, and Ell signed the oversized check that

represented the winnings for the night.
The 2015 55+ games wanted to put in a pickle
ball court, the Strathmore Library wanted to involve the art community to paint a mural the outside wall of Lambert Centre, and Hope Bridges
gave an idea of quilting the town along a walking trail, with plywood size paintings linked to
an app that would give details of the quilt and
historic details about Strathmore. The Strathmore
and District Ag Society wanted to bring a sustainable festival to town that would feature agriculture and sustainable technology. The town
revitalization committee would like to build
a farmers market building on land adjacent to
Kinsmen Park and the Friends of Brentwood parents association wanted to beautify the schools
grounds with shrubs, a picnic area and raised
gardens, where children could grow plants and
vegetables.
The Hope Bridges idea took home the prize and
there was a surprise ending with the three judges
offering an additional $5,000 each towards building the farmers market building, if the revitalization committee could come up with seven other
donors also willing to contribute $5,000 each.
The event was well received and an offer was
given to host the event at the Strathmore Travelodge next year.

Rusty Spurs wind up another year!

Wildrose questions
rising power costs
JASON HALE
Strathmore/Brooks MLA

The Wildrose and our
Utilities Critic has been very
critical and vocal about rising power costs in our province. Despite Alberta being
the Energy Capital of Canada both individuals and
business are suffering.
According to the Fraser Institute report, Alberta
businesses are losing competitiveness because theyre
paying some of the highest
electricity rates in North
America. The report shows
that out of 119 North American cities, Calgary businesses pay the seventh highest
power rates and Edmonton
pays the second highest.
Only Honolulu pays more
for electricity than Edmonton. The fact is the government continues with a
reckless overbuild of transmission lines and presiding
over a broken marketplace
without recognizing there is
a problem.
Wildrose is committed to
making policy changes to
reduce price spikes and distribution costs and to implement a proactive strategy
that would allow Alberta
to utilize natural gas, hydro
and renewable resources for
power generation, resulting
in more secure and efficient
generation for ratepayers.

Additionally, a serious of
ruling and reports by the
AUC and MSA have confirmed another problem
that has been allowed to
take place. Economic withholding is a strategy where
an electricity generator deliberately holds back power
from the market, creating an
electricity shortage that in
turn leads to higher prices.
The MSA, watch dog, is a
body with no authority they
only monitor and release
reports. The Alberta Utilities Commission is the atarms-length agency the PCs
have created to enforce the
rules. However, time after
time companies have been
proven guilty of market manipulation and only slapped
with a $100-$300 thousand
fine, while their profits are
in the Millions.
This session our Utilities Critic Joe Anglin has
demanded the PC government admit the system allows for companies to steal
from consumer, and enforce
stiff penalties for this type
of conduct. This is a priority of our caucus as rising
electricity prices affects all
Albertans, and the viability
of businesses to operate.
Thank you for your email
we will continue to ensure
this is a priority and hold
this government to account
for their actions.

Parliament rises for summer

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

After a very productive Parliamentary session
in Ottawa, I am looking forward to meeting with
many constituents over the summer. Our Conservative government has been very productive thanks
to a strong mandate and a majority of votes in the
House of Commons. As I attend events around our
Crowfoot riding this summer, I look forward to
discussing the work we are accomplishing on behalf of Canadians who work hard, pay their taxes
and are trying to raise their families.
The most significant legislation that we have
passed this spring is of course Canadas Economic
Action Plan (Bill C-31, the Budget Implementation
Act). This Act sets out a comprehensive agenda to
create jobs, keep the economy growing, and return
to a balanced budget next year, as we promised.
We continue to support families and communities
by keeping taxes low, putting consumers first, and
working to protect Canadians health and safety,
and more.
Many of you may have heard me say in the
House of Commons during Question Period that
since coming to office, our country has the best
job creation record in the G7, and we are leading
in economic growth. In fact, we have created almost 20 per cent more jobs on a per capita basis
than the next closest country.
Since the depth of the global recession, over 1
million net new jobs have been created (82 per
cent full time, with 80 per cent in the private sector and 61 per cent in high-wage industries). As

we have always said, Canada is not immune to the

global economic challenges beyond our borders.
This is especially true of the ongoing challenges in
the U.S. and Europe among our most important
trading partners.
Thats why our Conservative government is
working hard to help create more jobs and economic growth. Economic Action Plan 2014 does
exactly that by introducing positive measures like
the Canada Apprenticeship Loan Program, supporting more paid internships for recent graduates, cutting red tape for small business, making
landmark investments in research and innovation,
keeping taxes low for families, and more.
While were focused on creating jobs, Justin
Trudeau has the same old Liberal high tax, high
spending agenda that will threaten jobs and set
working families back. How can someone who
thinks budgets balance themselves be trusted
with jobs and the economy? Canadian families
know that to balance a budget, it takes tough decisions, a focus on priorities and sound judgement.
Our Conservative government remains committed to low taxes, fiscal discipline, and long-term
prosperity. Canadas story in recent years shows a
country that is getting back to work and in which
businesses, families, and communities are in an enviable position to succeed moving forward. I look
forward to seeing you over the coming months

Smore Paths is great for exercise enthusiasts

PARKER PETRUSKA
SAY Member
Summer is here and a great way to get outside is
to try out the Smore Paths iPhone app. This app
will give a map of the path and sidewalk system
in Strathmore. It includes some pre-made loops to
walk, run, or bike on, and also has a make your
own route function.
This week, I asked Jonah Zankl to tell me about
how he has used the app. Zankl played a big part
in creating this app, and he is one busy man. He
is an avid cyclist, riding about 3,000+ km per year,
and is going into his second year at the University
of Calgary.
PP: How often do you use the app?
JZ: I use the app most times that I go out to run
or ride my bike. I have even used it out on the
highway when riding and in Calgary, as the distance and speed tracking functions work regardless of whether youre in or out of town!
PP: Whats your favourite path and why?
JZ: My favourite predefined path in Smore
Paths is the East Strathmore Walkway. I like it as
it takes me nearly all the way around town and is
the longest route at 5.9 km. It passes by my house
so it is easy to hop on to the route and follow it
completely. I use this route when I run!

The cyber scam

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
This column is not humorous. It is more of a Public
Service article, that will hopefully help people avoid
a disaster like I just experienced. Let me explain.
Recently, weve had a lot of problems with slow Internet service. So last week, I called Shaw and after
a while, they were able to upgrade our band speed.
Everything seemed fine until the next night when it
was still slow, and Netflix was freezing.
So, they directed me to call the 1-800 number for
what they felt was a router issue. Of course, after a
long time on hold, I was put through to a technician. Now, there were two reasons for communication problems that followed.
One, the person had a strong accent, and I found
myself constantly saying pardon and could you
repeat that, as she gave me directions to follow.
Secondly, I am not a computer-savvy person. So,
whatever is being said to me is like a different language anyhow! To me, its like getting phone instructions from an EMT on delivering a baby!
So, after a long time, the router was also (for a fee)
upgraded, and all was well. All was well, until the
next day, when the Internet and Netflix were still
slow. This is where the disaster began. I Googled
the Linksys company to find the 1-800 number
Shaw had given me. My mistake was that in the
list of Linksys sites, I only clicked on the first one.
That one eventually turned out to be a bogus (scam)
site. I called them, and got a tech who began to
walk me through the router model, a speed check,
and blah-blah-blah. After a while, the tech said it
was not a router problem, and that he could run a
computer scan. This, I found out later, is not what a
router company would do. They do not run computer scans, they should only focus on the router issue!
After I foolishly gave him permission to take over
the screen, he showed me on screen the many,
many critical virus errors that our computer had!
He also said that these had to be fixed or we could
lose the Internet and that hackers have access to
our computer!
The next step was that he could put me through
to a third party company that could eliminate and
repair all the problems. A second tech took over,

and showed me the various plans to fix it, and how

much cheaper they were from Staples and Geek
Squad. It all began to feel like a sales tactic, and
I was feeling pressured! He said the right things,
that he didnt want a credit card number, as our
system was now unprotected, but that he could
take cheque information for $299 to fix the system!
I stalled as long as possible, and was able to Google
the real Linksys site, and got its 1-800 number. I
called this on my cell, keeping the tech on the
land line! He put me back to the initial guy from
Linksys. Before this, I had been frantically texting
Debbie, saying that I thought I was being scammed,
and we messaged back and forth. Finally, it hit me.
I asked the Linksys guy, if you are the correct
company, youll be able to tell me the work order
number from last night. Answering of course, he
began to work away, then said there were problems, and that his supervisor would be back. This
next guy also asked some more questions about the
previous night, but I kept coming back to asking
for the work order number. Finally, the supervisor
said, Im just going to put you on hold while I retrieve that information.
Neither came back on the line, and many minutes
passed, so I hung up.
I now got through to the real Linksys person, and
explained what had happened. She told me it was
a scam, and that no router tech should ever try to
run a computer scan! I was still stunned, and began
to doubt her when she said that they would have to
put me through to a third party company to undo
the damage, clear any viruses, and secure the system! Luckily, she was able to provide not only the
work order number from the previous night, but
the time I had called, as well as the last service call
I made in 2013! After another fee, we think all has
been fixed, and weve changed all our passwords.
However, this experience has shaken us. I got the
wrong number to a scam company because I didnt
go right to the website to check. After, I read of
other people who had also been scammed by a fake
Linksys site. I hope after reading this, you are able
to learn from my mistakes. Be very careful to ALWAYS get onto the official company website, and
dont let any tech into your system!

GOING FOR GOLD

As you read this we will be in the
midst of the 2014 FIFA World Cup of
Soccer. This gathering of nations
from around the world, to compete
for a relatively modest gold statue
generates a lot of emotion and
enthusiasm. While that may be your
focus in these last days of June and
the first of July, I would ask you to
journey with me to another place.
As you read this children and young
adults known to you are finishing
their school year. Perhaps you are
planning times of rest and recreation
over July and August. While those
plans may include active times of
water sports, rodeo events and other
activities, I am asking you to consider the idea of Sabbath time.
In the Hebrew and Christian traditions and in our Sacred Scriptures,
there is in our understanding of
creation, the idea of a day of rest,
the Sabbath. This setting aside the
regular activities of life for a day of
focus on family and faith was seen
as a mirroring of Gods activity in the
act of the Creation. Whether you understand the creation story as actual
event or metaphorical presentation
of the act of Gods creation, there is
at the heart of it a belief that in the
rhythm of life there is a need for a
day of rest in each week.
In recent years, the setting aside of a
day of rest, a Sabbath rest has been
all but forgotten. We now have a
host of activities that fill up all of our
days and we somehow believe that
if we could just cram in some more

meaningful activities, we would feel

better about our lives.
My suggestion here is not the return
to the good old days where everything was shuttered and closed on
Sundays. Those days are gone. What
I am suggesting here is that we need
to carve out of our busy days times
of rest and reflection. For some of
you that would mean an hour or two
of silent reflection and perhaps meditation. For others it might be a walk
in the fields or by the river letting the
sounds of creation wash over you.
It might be a time devoted to your
holy book each day and a time of
listening. It might be an hour or two
spent without your i whatevers
turned on. It might be a dedicated
time at meals when the entire family
listens to each other and all devices
are turned off and put away.
My challenge to you is to take some
time in these summer days to cultivate in your lives an intentional focus
on the things of the spirit. Things
that will move you to a place where
you will recognize all of the things
for which you can be thankful and a
place where you rediscover what is
most important for you. We used to
call this summer time holidays from
the phrase holy days not vacation.
Perhaps with such a focus we be
more truly refreshed and renewed
this summer.
Thats the way I see it as I ask you to
Pass the Salt.

Marigold Library supported by Wheatland County

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

An ever expanding demand for information is
hitting the Marigold library system and more service requires more funding.
We have not stood still over the last five years.
It is like we are on high speed internet mode,
said Marigold Library Director Michelle Toombs.
Toombs presented the many advances the library has made for the patrons in Wheatland
County in council on June 9. She commented that
usage is increasing due to population growth and
patron demand for digital services. She gave examples of some of the new digital sites such as
Zinio, a digital magazine site, Career Cruising,
Grant Connect and Tumblebooks. These were
added to the many other services offered online
and in the local libraries in the towns, hamlets and
villages of Wheatland County. The breakdown of
services can be reviewed at the Marigold Library
website www.marigold.ab.ca, or under the June 9
agenda at www.wheatlandcounty.ca.

The Marigold office building is located in Strathmore, but the building is 60 years old and deteriorating. Marigold has been saving to build a new facility. They have about $1.5 million saved towards
the $5 million cost to build a facility that would
meet the book distribution and digital hardware
housing needed to keep up services in the future.
Over 668,000 books are shipped in and out of the
current facility per year.
In order to meet increasing needs for this area,
the per capita levy fees that Wheatland pays the
Marigold system had to be raised 10.44 per cent to
$8.99 for 2015 and another 4.4 per cent to $9.39
per capita for 2016. Toombs said the funds would
be supplemented by any grants awarded to Marigold and fund raising the system does on a regular basis.
They use every penny they are given and are
not wasting money, said Councillor Berniece
Bland. They do a lot of good work in the community and provide a necessary service.
Council voted to accept the per capita increase
for Marigold on June 17.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Stop the negativity, lets support our school

To the Editor
I wonder to myself, is it just sour grapes? A small
and very vocal group of Standard area residents continue to attempt to undermine the plan for a new K-12
standalone school named East Wheatland.
A parent group of our peers has recommended that
a standalone school would be the best option for all
five communities. They recognized that a school built
outside of the community would attract the greatest
amount of students and have the best chance to give
our children a true Grade 12 education and school
options. The vast majority of parents have interpreted
these recommendations and voted in favour of building according to this plan. The reality is that our rural
schools will be closed and bussing to large centers
will take place if a new centralized school is not built.
Standard area residents will receive the greatest benefit by the proximity of our new school.
But we still see regular letters stating that the village of Standard is the only place a school should be
built. Do you realize that over half the bussing to Standard already safely turns at the intersection of High-

Course
golf

way 561 and 840. A school built here will likely have
speed control and be better marked. This intersection
will be safer after our school is built in this location.
Rumours of no water supply, not enough land and
many other negative factors spread by person and flyer are unfounded. The impossible water supply was
easily found and the quality is good. Amazing enough
a nice farmer decided that he should not succumb to
the pressure of locking the Golden Hills School Board
from land in this area. Thank-you! My hat is off to you.
East Wheatland residents, it is time to embrace this
plan. A tremendous amount of fundraising must happen in the next few years as East Wheatland is built.
This is your school! Our children and grandchildren
should be able to receive a similar or better education than we received. Money donated now will shape
the extra options available to them. Take time to read
the information created by our parent group Friends
of East Wheatland, stop your bickering and donate
generously.

Long road to recovery

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Approximately six years ago Mike
and Barb Froese saw an ad in the paper about a property to buy in Nightingale. They fell in love. The land had
a pond, was big and the trailer looked
great. They thought it was a great opportunity to live not too far out of
town. Since then the dream property
has become sort of a nightmare.
I say to everybody, what drew us
here is whats killing us, and its the
water, said Barb.
Approximately four years ago there
had been a minor flooding incident
due to a mishap. The next summer
was when many of the roads, culverts
and properties in Wheatland County
flooded, including the Froese property, and it has been nothing but problems since.
When you look out your window
and you see the ducks swimming by
its really serious, said Barb.
The county helped us out last time
by giving us the materials to build this
berm, that is going to prevent any water from coming in like that again,
said Mike.
There is no drainage for the slough
near their property, and so with nowhere to go, it went into the Froeses
yard and home. The trailer was surrounded by water, and the septic system was compromised. It was nearly
five months before the water receded
enough that the couple could leave the
house without rubber boots.
The trailer has shifted since the flood
three years ago, the sewer lines are no

longer functioning properly, and an

above-ground septic system will likely
be needed.
The water level doesnt seem to go
down each year either, said Barb.
Since the initial flood a few years
ago it has rained more, there has been
more snowmelt, and the land is not
getting the opportunity to dry like it
once did. If the Froeses were to dig a
foot down into the dirt, it would easily fill with water. Even walking across
the yard the bottoms of shoes get wet
from the water that is barely below the
surface.
Were at the point that we dont
know what to do any more. We have
options, were trying to collect quotes
for these options but basically the
three things that we have to do are
raise the trailer, redo the sewer lines,
and find some new way of dealing
with the septic, said Mike.
Theres a possibility that a class from
the University of Alberta (UofA) will
come to do soil samples of the area
and a site analysis and figure out what
will work best for a possible solution
for the Froeses. If the couple decide to
go the way that is suggested by UofA,
then all of the labour would be free,
they would only have to pay for materials.
No one can accurately predict whether or not the water will keep rising and
no one knows what will happen in 10
years, but the Froeses are hoping to
get someone who has enough knowledge to make an educated guess about
a solution.
It has to be a solution that is going
to work and last. We dont want this

Shannon LeClair Photo

to happen in another two years or another 10 years, said Barb.

Neighbours have seen and helped
where they can with the Froeses
struggle. On July 5 they are hoping to
gather people together to help raise
funds to help the family.
These are two great, hard-working
people. They are always willing to help
others out, but we feel they really need
a helping hand. They would never ask
for help themselves, and we know that
their finances are such that they would
likely have to refinance their mortgage
in order to pay for the work that needs
to be done. We just want to help in
any way we can, said Carrie Inman,
coordinator of the fundraiser and family friend.
When she (Carrie) said she wanted
to talk to us, I had no idea that was
what she was going to say. I think we

have come to terms with how we are

feeling now, but we didnt want to feel
like it was a pity party, said Barb.
We are very grateful, and very humbled and appreciative, said Mike.
Anything raised will go into a bank
account and will go towards fixing the
problems on the property. Mike said it
really comes down to the money. They
want to stay and will do what they can,
but if there is not enough money to
do everything that needs to be done
properly, then they will look at other
options.
Were going to do everything we
can to stay here, said Mike.
The fundraiser will take place from 1
p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nightingale Community Hall. There will be a silent auction, a BBQ and much more. Everyone
is welcome to attend the event and
show their support.

Wheatland County to supervise Strathmore Rural and Carseland Fire

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Wheatland County will assume direct supervision of the Strathmore and
Carseland Rural Fire Fighting Response
and Rescue Response Areas. The decision was made by Wheatland County
council after they heard a report from
Ken Kendall Consulting and recommendations from county staff on June
17.
I needed to look at this in a forthright manner as there are two fire associations to be determined, said Ken
Kendall.
Kendall presented reasons why four
other operational models would not
work and why he chose direct supervision by the county. The report stipulated the county develop a smooth transitional process, a clear organizational
decision making model, with a clear
chain of command with policies and
procedures provided to the two services. The county will create a capital budget for the services, assuming responsibility for operational maintenance of
equipment and the halls. The county
would also be responsible to develop
training programs.
Kendall said he talked with all levels of fire volunteers and the responses
from those working on the floor and
upper management were cohesive.
This is positive, in a sense if there
were polar opposites of opinion in
the rank and file and the volunteers it
would be very different, said Kendall.
They just want to serve the public and
do a good job that is the common
motivator.
Assessment of assets in the two halls
will be done and Kendall said that any
equipment purchased by a community

fundraising effort will stay with the

community fire hall that did the fundraising.
Separating Carseland and Strathmore
Rural into two separate entities will
be done in the future and Wheatland
County would look at building a new
hall in Carseland, as their current building is inadequate.
In the evening of June 17, Kendall
presented the Carseland and Strathmore Rural Fire Department report to
21 volunteer firefighters at the Carseland Fire Hall. He also met with 32 residents in the Carseland Community Hall,
in a meeting that was somewhat subdued from other meetings conducted
with the community on this issue.
Our concerns have died down some
and we are much calmer than we were,
said Carseland Firefighting Association
President Adrian Knaus.
For the most part, those in attendance held a watch-and-see attitude
while others saw the move as positive,
leaving a large amount of responsibility
with the county. Kendall said the existing firefighting associations, although
not involved in the day-to-day operations, could be effective in fundraising,
support and community awareness.
General Manager of Agriculture,
Community and Protective Services Jim
Laslo introduced the 18-page Bylaw
2014-3 in Wheatland Council on June
17 for first reading, to establish county
authority and define details for operating the new fire supervision.
We wanted to have all things that
pertain to fire in this one bylaw, said
Laslo.
First reading was passed by council.
Ken Kendalls report and the bylaw are available on the county web
site www.wheatlandcounty.ca , under

County Announcements for public review and feedback. Comments can be

forwarded to Alan Parkin, Chief Administrative Officer, at Alan.Parkin@
wheatlandcounty.ca or by telephone at
403-934-3321.
All comments received by Parkin
will be presented to Wheatland County
council at the July 15 regular council
meeting. There is no public hearing,
but Reeve Glenn Koester said he usually provides time for any questions,
should they arise.
Kendall left the door open for any
other fire associations in the county to
consider county administration and direct supervision should they need the
help, or decide that as an option for
their service in the future.

Ken Kendall (r) of Ken Kendall Consulting talks

to fire fighter Curt Emde after a meeting in the
Carseland Hall June 17, after Kendall revealed
the contents of his governance study and the
announcement Strathmore Rural and Carseland
would be under the direct supervision of Wheatland County.

In spite of strong winds and occasional showers the residents of Carseland

and area celebrated 100 years of community spirit with their annual parade
and Aggie Days on June 20-22. A town crier and a red serge dressed RCMP
officer led the parade with an assortment of floats with heritage and steam
engine themes, tricked out cars and motorbikes followed and horses, families
and dogs all participated. The customary candy was thrown to waiting children.
Fire engines were missing from this years event, as the crews were away on
training session or serving the community.
There were events at the hall such as the BBQ, trade fair, ag exhibits, childrens
rides and bouncy house and later a tractor pull. The children enjoyed seeking
money planted in the money pit of sand brought in for the day.
A constant stream of baseball games were enjoyed at the ball diamonds, although some players commented running against the wind was extra challenging.

sorts of creative activities for the kids.
The theme Eureka! is kind of all
about creativity and discovery and
learning, so we are going to try and do
science experiments and recycling, lots
of crafts, trying to get the kids creative
and do some fun learning so it is not
just the same as school, said Wiebe.
One day will be all about recycling,
taking cardboard boxes, tin cans and
so forth and see what they can make
with them, and how many things that
can be made out of the items.
Wiebe and Easu would like to get
teenagers to come out, but said it is a
little had to reach that demographic.
Were kind of trying to find things
that we ourselves would think is really
cool, and we would want to make it
ourselves, said Wiebe.
There is a $5 fee for the program, for

Introducing

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~Corrie Van Laar

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Corrie was born on a mixed
dairy farm, near Barneveld,
Holland in 1933, the oldest
of a family of six. This farm
was located near the main
road from Amerstoort to
Apeldoorn, and with a mainline railway nearby, it became an important transport
corridor when the German
Army invaded Holland. However, before the anticipated
invasion started, everyone
from around Barneveld was
evacuated to Ermelo. Corries family was moved by
one of their neighbours in his
horse drawn wagon. Her father had already been called
up to serve with the Dutch
Army. But, the invasion never
came, so after five days they
returned home to Barneveld,
where the house was still
standing, but there was no
sign of their livestock which
mother had turned loose before leaving! Throughout the
war, their house was used by
many evacuees, all of whom
had to be fed. Mom baked
bread from grain and flour
obtained from a nearby mill,
in a special home-made oven
made of brick, and heated
by wood (no coal), about 20
loaves at a time. There was
very little meat available, but
they did have lots of fresh
homegrown fruit and vegetables. After the war she
completed her education by
taking a Home Economics
course, specializing in Dress
Design and Dress Making.
Corries husband Bernard
Ben Van Laar, was also
born on a mixed dairy farm
at Ede, Holland in 1929, one
of the youngest of a family of
14. During the war, his family helped members of the
underground to escape, by
hiding them in haystacks, etc
when German Troops came
to the farm. After the war
he attended Agriculture Col-

lege at Nykerk, as he wanted

to become a dairy farmer.
They were married in Holland on Feb.
1, 1951 and
the following year they
sailed from
The Hague
to
Halifax,
landing
at
the
infamous
Pier
21 where so
many immigrants first
landed
on
Canadian
soil.
They
had one son
born in Holland, and three
additional children born in
Canada. They now have 11
grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren, including twin
boys.
When I asked why they
came to Southern Alberta,
Corrie advised there were
other family members already
here. Initially, Ben worked as
a farm labourer for various
owners, then started renting
farms for their own use. Finally, in 1965 they were able to
purchase their own farm, four
miles north of Standard, and
operated it as a mixed farm
until 1974 when they moved
into a bungalow theyd built
in Standard.Their eldest son
Barry and wife Heather took
over the farm, and still operate it to this day.
In 1972, Corrie and Ben
purchased the Tire Shop in
Standard, which they owned
for the next 22 years. Apart
from selling, installing, repairing tires, they also drove
the school bus, and operated
the snow plough. Corrie was
supervisor of the Standard
Campground for 11 years,
which required her to collect
camping fees and clean the
washrooms, etc.
In 1994, Ben retired from
farming and moved to Lambert Village in Strathmore,

was well known for her gardening expertise, and when

her house finally went up For
Sale, the advert was entitled
Gardeners Paradise. Every
year, she had a large productive vegetable garden as well
as abundant flowers.
In the early years, while the
family was growing up, Corrie volunteered with the local
cubs and scouts, helped with
the 4-H Sewing Club, and 4-H
Public Speaking. She also volunteered at WFCSS and the
Crisis Shelter. To this day she
is a member of the Standard
Seniors Club, and since she
moved to Strathmore has become a member of the Strathmore Alliance Church. Canada has been a great place to
live and raise a family.

Shes So Mean high school

production in Standard
MANNY EVERETT
Times Contributor

Standard Schools high school performance class performed an original play,
Shes So Mean on June 11. The play was
inspired by the movie Mean Girls (Rosalind Wiseman, Tina Fey 2004).
Teacher Ed Yu says, it can be difficult
to find a play that utilizes each students
strengths so we decided to create our
own.
The students began brainstorming
ideas for the play early in March. As
they improvised certain scenarios from
their own experiences, the scenes of the
play emerged. Creating the play from
improvisation and real experiences allowed the students to feel that this story
was about them.
The production circled around the life
of teenagers, bullying and acceptance
amongst their peers through musical
pieces and drama.
Students chose songs that they were
interested in performing and as the
play developed, some songs were added while others were removed because
they no longer fit within the play. Yu
says, I think what makes something
like this successful is that once we cre-

ated something, each student felt some

ownership of it and were proud of it.
For some of the students, it was their
first time performing a musical number.
While not being a musical so to speak,
the music and songs chosen made their
way into being an integral part of the
production. Some of the songs featured
included: Shes So Mean by Matchbox
Twenty, Happy by Pharrell Williams and
Say Something by Great Big World.
The story follows the new girl, Emily
Smith (played by Kelsey Kathol) arriving at school, seemingly innocent until
her new friend, Jenny Allen (played by
Catrin Thomas) convinces her to join
the popular group, the Straws in order
to get revenge. The tension grows as
Emily becomes more popular and less
innocent and in the end must make the
choice of whether popularity is worth
sacrificing friendship.
We hope that more students try drama, says Yu.
As the character Mr. Graderson
(played by Gabriel Love) says, mainly
because if we have this activity, we have
to make sure that there are enough students participating to justify getting out
of regular classes.

Proposal brought to council

to rescind Land Use Bylaw
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

First reading was given, on June 18
by Strathmore Town Council, to the
proposal to rescind the current Land
Use Bylaw (LUB). Normally for first
reading there is no discussion, just the
setting of a public hearing date. Due to
the importance of the issue and its relevance to much of the town, Pat Maloney, a contract planner with the town,
spoke briefly about the proposal.
What were looking at doing is developing a brand new Land Use Bylaw
so that it will be 100 per cent, rescind
the previous, adopt the new, said Maloney.
It has had internal circulation, and
there have been several meetings with
the planning department about the new
proposed LUB. Betty Ann Fountain has
kept notes over the years of things she
would like to see changed, or that administration has had trouble interpreting or that have been missing. Maloney
said they tried to incorporate a couple
of those and some new things into the
LUB.
The licensed medical marijuana facilities is in here. It is something that
just about every municipality is putting
in their bylaw. Its to identify where
a licensed medical marijuana facility
would be located, because by not addressing it, it actually leaves it more
open to challenge then by specifically

identifying where it can be, said Maloney.

This also includes secondary suites
which has been a topic for discussion
in the town. We did include secondary suites as an opportunity in the Municipal Development Plan, this outlines
definitions, regulations and where they
would be located.
The new land use map also addresses
a lot of the technical amendments that
have been noted as needing an update.
After first reading, Maloney said the
plan is to circulate the plan specifically
to the developers and builders in town,
to the regular agencies, and will hold
off on public consultation until September.
What they would like to do is a workshop consultative session where people
can maybe go from table to table and
find out how they could go about building a duplex or a commercial development, for example, would work with
the plan. Going to push the consultative
work in September and may partner it
with bringing forward the downtown
revitalization strategy, so there could
be two purposes for the consultation.
The Land Use Bylaw is where things
begin to directly affect residents. It is
when talk starts about fences, neighbours, proximity to services and other
things that will have a direct impact on
residents.
First Reading was given and a public
hearing date was set for Sept. 17.

Summer with the Youth Club

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Finding something to do with your
child during the summer is easier than
ever, thanks to all of the summer camps
being offered in and around Strathmore.
The Youth Club of Strathmore begins
their summer camps on June 30. Registration will take place throughout the
summer, and will depend on if there is
space available.
The camps begin with Whos Your
Hero, June 30 to July 4.
Whos Your Hero is kind of a run on
the superhero idea in that its going to
be superheroes as well as real life heroes, said Shannon Zieman, program
director for the Youth Club.
The fire department will have members coming in, as well as the armed
forces reserves and other local heroes.
The week will also incorporate the kids
ideas on superheroes.
Week two, Prehistoria, July 7-11, is
about prehistoric times. A couple of
different field trip ideas are being discussed.
Circus Circus is week three, July 1418.
We actually have a circus troupe
coming in on the Thursday that will
teach some different skills right from
stilt walking to tight ropes and juggling
and clowning, said Zieman.
Week four July 21-25 is Waterworks,
and will be about anything and everything to do with water. The field trip for
that week will either be to the Airdrie
Genesis Place or to the Bassano outdoor
pool, and will be weather dependent.
Wild, Wild West week, July 28 to Aug.
1, takes place in conjunction with the
rodeo in town, and that week the kids
dont go on a field trip, but attend the
rodeo.
Aug. 5-6 is Culture Crazy.
Our whole intent behind that is to
introduce the kids to different cultures,
so it is not just specific to aboriginal
culture. We have a couple of different
ideas of different cultures were going
to bring in to do activities and dances,
said Zieman.
Part of the week will also include having the kids identify their own cultural

TS
3 UNI

background and taking part in activities

around that as well.
Aug. 11-17 is Survivor week. There
will be different challenges and survivor
quests set up, but the field trip has not
yet been determined.
Lastly, week eight is Spirit Week,
which is when the kids and coordinators get to go through the last seven
weeks, pick out the popular stuff and
redo it.
It is just kind of a celebration week
being as it is the last week of camp,
said Zieman.
The basic idea behind each week is
that on Mondays, weather permitting,
there will be a trip to the waterpark in
the afternoon. Tuesdays will be things
at the club in the morning and Jumphouse in the afternoon. Wednesday afternoon is a trip to the Aquatic Centre,
Thursday is field trip day and Fridays
are community service days, where the
kids will do a community service project of some sort.
New this year, is the summer camps
are also going to be offered in Rockyford and Carseland. The camps will be
the same as the ones running in town,
and the groups will come together for a
couple of events.
Summer camps in Rockyford and
Carseland will alternate weeks, starting
with Carseland June 30 to July 4. Weeks
six and seven will be back-to-back in
Rockyford, and the final week will wrap
up in Carseland.
Zieman said the club would also like
to offer Youth Excursions for kids in
Grade 7 and up. It would be a once a
week trip to go hiking, or to Calaway
Park. Youth Excursions can only happen if there is interest in it, and Zieman

Finding the magic:

theatre student writes and
performs graduating project

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Chrissie Muldoon, fourth-year student at Rosebud School
of the Arts (RSA), presents the play Where the Magic Ends
from June 27-29.
Muldoon is playwright, producer and actor, for this is her
Final Project, the culmination of her studies at RSA. Paul Muir,
resident actor of Rosebud Theatre, is the only other member
of the cast.
Where the Magic Ends is about a writer whos creatively
blocked, Muldoon explains. That block has taken a toll on his
writing, his marriage, his whole life. However, he can physically see his creative genius, and he talks to the creative genius about his problem, =so together, they can figure out why
hes blocked.
Like her character, Muldoon says, shes also faced depression and anxiety. But shes written four previous plays, and
has discovered that shes happier when shes writing. As she
wrote Where the Magic Ends, guiding her character out of
his depression, she learned new ways to overcome her own
challenges.
I was very sure to put humour and tenderness in (the
play), because I feel like thats the way we have to take the
hard things in our life, she says. We have to take them with
as much humour and heart as we can muster.
The actual producing of (Where the Magic Ends) has been
a joy and a huge challenge, Muldoon says. Through her studies, she feels she has developed all the skills she needed.
Rosebud instructors really do prepare us for a career, she
says. All in all, this project really has been a joy.
Its all coming together to tell this specific story that Ive
chosen to tell, that I want to tell, and that I feel is an important story to tell.
Where the Magic Ends will be shown in Rosebuds Akokiniskway Gallery on June 27 at 5 p.m., June 28 at 5 p.m., and
on June 29 at 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.
It includes strong language and mature content. Get tickets
at 403-677-2015 or by e-mailing soapbox.office@gmail.com.
$10 in advance; $12 at the door.
I hope (everyone) comes out to see the show and I hope
they like it, Muldoon says. Dont be afraid to come talk to
me at the end of the show.

Field Stone
brings home
more hardware
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Field Stone Fruit Wines has once
again brought home the hardware with
their delectable wines. This year nine
medals have made their way into the
collection, making it the best showing
for the nine-year-old winery.
On May 29 the results came in from
the North West Wine Summit. Field
Stone was given the bronze medal for
the Saskatoon dessert wine, and silver
for the bumble berry fruit wine, raspberry fruit wine, strawberry dessert
wine and the wild black cherry dessert
wine.
They also took home two gold medals for the strawberry-rhubarb and the
raspberry dessert wine.
Were thrilled. This is the first time
we have won more than two golds in a
single year. Its been quite the journey,
said Elaine Gill, co-founder of Field
Stone in a press release.
It is very gratifying, it is an extremely tricky process to get the right combination between your fruit being different every year and having to balance
these fruits together and come out with
a wine that is that good three times in a
year is very satisfying, said Marvin Gill,
who also co-founded Field Stone.
The third gold medal was won at
the All Canadian Wine Championships
where the black cherry dessert wine
took gold, and the strawberry dessert
wine took bronze.
This year Field Stone also received
three more recognitions from the Summit, the Superlative Award for best of
region for the strawberry-rhubarb wine,
Winery of Distinction Award for being
one of only 16 wineries to win two or
more gold medals, and the Crystal Rose
Award for best non-grape wine in the
competition, again for the strawberryrhubarb wine.
Marvin has been contemplating the
cause of the success for the winery this
year. He thinks it may be because he
sang to the wine as he was making it.
He is an opera singer with 30 years of
training and while he was working on
the wine he was thinking about frequencies.

this year, along with three additional awards of
special distinction.

I was just thinking about how everything has a frequency, the wine has a
frequency, the singing has a frequency,
and I was thinking well why dont I
try to infuse my voice into the wine by
singing and letting the frequency run
into the wine, and so thats what I did,
said Marvin.
Other than that, everything else in
the wine production this year was basically the same as it has been in the past.
In 2012 a hailstorm destroyed many
of the crops, but that didnt deter the
Gills who still kept making top quality fruit wine to the best of their ability.
The plants are coming back, and things
are looking better now, almost back to
normal.
In the past nine years Field Stone has
come home with close to 50 medals,
and they have always entered the same
two wine competitions. This year they
also entered the Alberta Food Awards
and took top place in the best value
added product using fruit also for the
strawberry-rhubarb wine.
On Field Stones Facebook page there
are recipes for cocktails, sangrias and
even sauces using the wines.
I think people over the summer are
looking for something a little bit more
light for their parties and time on the
patio, they dont always want to be
drinking a heavy drink, said Marvin.
Sangrias are a good alternative to
that, they can be sparkling, more juicy,
more fruity, however you want to make
them, They can be a nice alternative to
drinking a cooler or a beer or something like that.
Field Stone wines can be purchased
at Co-op and Crowfoot liquor stores,
and at the winery.

Rodeo action!
The Blackfoot Rodeo and Ag Society held
its 50th Anniversary Rodeo at the Strathmore Ag Grounds on June 21 and 22. A
total of 249 entrants from Alberta, BC,
Saskatchewan and Montana tested their
skills in typical rodeo events such as roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, bull riding and more. This event is usually held at
the Siksika Nation rodeo grounds but being
the 50th Anniversary, organizers wanted to
stage a larger event which required a larger
venue. They also needed a facility with a
racetrack for their Indian Relay event. The
Indian relay is quite popular in the US but
new to this particular rodeo. This rodeo is
sanctioned by the Indian Rodeo Cowboy
Association (IRCA) and is a qualifying event
for the regional finals. The top two regional
finalists move on to the IRCA finals in Las
Vegas in November.

Tri-Smore a success!
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The fourth annual Tri-Smore triathlon wrapped up
this past weekend and it was another successful event
considering the cooler temperatures.
It went well as we could have hope for it to have
gone. The only thing that we could have improved is
the weather, said Nikola Johnson, one of the organizers
for the event.
Considering the weather, the triathlon attracted 407 of
a 443 that were registered, but the youth participation
increased.
The one thing that stood out for me this year is the
younger participants that we had in the 18 and under
category was around 250, said Johnson.
The younger contestants that are competing are progressing up into the longer races.
Our little guys who are starting in the two bites are
moving up into the quarters and halves, and our goal
is to provide fun opportunities for families and youth,
said Johnson.
There will be special new additions to the race for
the fifth annual race next year with the possibility of
expanding to Olympic tracks.
There is rumors that we might add a mega-smore,
the Olympic distance twice, as long as the full smore,
said Johnson.
The route will be in the works this fall for the special
anniversary 2015 event.

Chinook Credit Union golfs for charity

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Chinook Credit Union is getting set to host
their annual golf tournament on July 4 at the
Strathmore Golf Course.
Strathmore Branch representative Trish Romanchuk was able to give her thoughts on what to
look for at the tournament and what is new this
year.
The charity golf tournament is for the SPEC Association out of Brooks this year, said Romanchuk.
The SPEC Association for Children & Families is
a group in Brooks that started out as a small group
and became a resource for child and family support.
They went from this super-tiny $6,000 a year
organization to $200,000 to run the one program,
said Romanchuk.
Another foundation that the golf tournament
supports is the Kids Club.

The Kids Club provides after school care for 60

kids per day and basically without that they would
not have a place to go, said Romanchuk.
The previous three years of the tournament, the
foundation that was sustained was AIMS. This year
the Chinook Credit Union opened up to all communities.
There have been a few new additions to the tournament this year, and some that are more appealing for new people to participate in.
We have added in a silent auction and had some
really great donations with paintings, Reba McIntire tickets, stuff that did not really fit as a door
prize, said Romanchuk.
For special event, there will be some notables
taking part in the tournament.
Honorable Jason Hale who represents the
Brooks to Strathmore area - which will be perfect
for him - and a lot of our vendors we use here at
Chinook, are going to be here to support that day,
said Romanchuk.

John and Donna Timmermans along with their three girls, Brenda, Laura and Karen moved to the WID
place outside of Carseland in 1970 and then Leroy came along in 1971. John achieved his dream of having a
farm while also working as a Ditch Rider for the Western Irrigation District and stayed in Carseland until
the spring of 1980.
While in Carseland they raised cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys, milk cows, a couple of horses, a dog and
plenty of cats.
Milking in the morning was done by John and in the evenings the whole family helped in the barn. The
children all learned to milk alongside Donna and John. It took some practice but once their little hands
could squeeze the teats and get the milk into the pail while balancing on a one legged stool they were good
to go. You knew you were an experienced milker once you could squirt the cats as they walked by. John
always so much faster, had 2 cows milked to every one of the rest of his helpers. The foam from the milk was
scooped off and fed to the cats. At one time there were 19 of them lined up at the milk bowl. When they were
underfoot they learned to fly or move very quickly up the ladder to the loft.
The first cream separator had a hand crank and it did not take John long before he had it rigged up to a
little motor to make things go much quicker. Donna would have clean ice cream pails lined up ready to be
filled with fresh cream while the milk went into a separate pail below.
Excess milk and cream was shipped out in cans and picked up by Foothills Creamery every couple of
weeks. You never tasted such rich cream and delicious milk. Enough cream was kept in order for the butter
to be churned on Saturday mornings. Everyone had to take a turn at the crank while watching the cream
turn into butter (my mouth still waters for that taste). Once it was just the right consistency a little yellow
colouring was added and then put into a wooden mold and pressed until all the milk squished out of the
sides. The butter milk was kept for later baking. Laura recalls drinking a big glass by mistake and promptly
spitting it into the sink while Donna laughed and laughed.
Raising and butchering chickens and turkeys was an event that required many helping hands. Each of
the kids, Brenda, Laura, Karen and Leroy had a job. While John caught the birds and put them in a gunny
sack, Donna was busy preparing tables and spreading newspapers awaiting the plucking and cleaning.
Once Leroy was old enough his job was to hold the birds head steady while John chopped it off with an axe.
Then the headless bird was strung up by the legs and hung on a nail on the fence to bleed out. On occasion,
usually when one of the girls was supposed to lift the bird up, the bird would slip out of the string and flop
around in the dirt which did not please John. Next step was to drench the bird into a pot of boiling water
that was sitting on the coleman stove. To this day I still smell wet chicken each time someone fires up their
propane camp stove.
During the summers, John and Donna could be found baling hay. Donna and her four little ones would
help to throw bales up the elevator while John stacked them in the loft of the barn. Everyone was proud of
the muscles that were developed from all this hard work.
Everything the Timmermans family did was done as a family, from working on the farm to going to church
and to attending many community functions.
Once the children were all in school and John was working, Donna decided she needed something else
to do. While participating in the curling league an opportunity arose at the Carseland Curling Rink to run
the kitchen counter. Together with Yvonne Hellevang they filled the position and became a wonderful team.
Many people remember the delicious cream pies, freshly baked butterhorns and cinnamon buns smothered
with butter icing, mouth-watering soups and grilled burgers that came out of that kitchen. I can see Eldon
Bonitz dumping ketchup in his soup and being mortified that he didnt even taste his soup before adding
it. Ralph MacKenzie was a regular sitting on the stool waiting for his generous helping of pie with extra
whipped cream.
John was a member of the Carseland Lions Club, while Donna was a member of the Carseland Public
Benefit Club. There were many events to attend throughout the year. The biggest was the annual Lions Club
BBQ. The men would take turns running the bar and checking on the bbq. Lots of food was consumed and
maybe a little alcohol too.
The PB club cooked and served many meals and washed a ton of dishes. It was great to see all the
ladies working so hard to make every dinner they hosted better than the last. Washing dishes by hand and
going through stacks of flour sack dish towels until all the dishes were dried and put away. The ladies would
talk and laugh and share stories that were not always intended for the little curious ears of the children that
were towed along to help. The family dances were well attended and everyone could put to use their newly
acquired dance lessons to use. Swaying to the music of the Meadows family and watching Gerald Vander
Velde play on occasion as well.
Adult Education Courses were offered in Carseland and Donna and John took many of them along with
other members of the community. The one I remember the best was the meat cutting course. We would
gather at the garage of Tim Cote or Curt Hvinglby and the men would bring out their big knives and cut the
beef into steaks and roasts. Wives and children would string the roasts wrap everything neatly in brown
waxed paper and label the packages with a big black felt pen.
Donna also took every other course available, from hair cutting to sewing blue jeans and down filled
vests. 40 years John is still wearing the blue jean jacket and sits contently as Donna trims his hair.
1980 brought a close to our time in Carseland as we moved to Indus. In 10 short years we made many
friends and enjoyed many good times at the old W.I.D. place. The house has since been torn down but the
barn and the garage are still standing.
What great memories and not matter how long we are gone from Carseland it will always be home.

Hawks soar to provincial championship!

STEVE STOVKA
Strathmore Rollerhawks

It was an exciting weekend of roller hockey this past weekend as Red Deer hosted the 2014 Alberta Minor Roller Hockey Provincials. The Calgary Roller Hockey League was represented in the U-10 competitive division by the Rollerhawks,
a team made up of Strathmore and Chestermere area boys.
This was the second year at provincials for the boys and
they defended last years championship by once again taking
home the gold medal! It was a hard fought battle from start
to finish with all the elite teams trying to knock off the defending champs, but in the end the Rollerhawks prevailed to
bring home the Gold!
On the way to the title the Rollerhawks lost game one 7-4

to the Northern Alberta Bulls, which is an elite AAA team specifically chosen to defeat the Rollerhawks. Game 2 saw the
Rollerhawks rebound with a close 6-5 win over Red Deer 2,
then in the third game the Rollerhawks defeated Red Deer 1
by a score of 7-4. That placed them second in their pool with
a game against Red Deer 2 in the semis in which the Hawks
found their wheels and defeated Red Deer 14-1.
That produced a game that everyone wanted to see as the
Rollerhawks were up against the Northern Alberta Bulls for
the championship. It was a back and forth game but eventually the boys held it together for a 6-5 championship win.
The team consists of Grady Stovka, Liam Wilson, Alex Pagenkopf, Adam Kirkpatrick, Philip Raycroft, Jayse Pollock,
Will Haynes, Kegan Law, Tegan Skehar, and goalie Rhett
Harten.
