Julie Bishop Restates Support For Fiji

Election And Queen's Interest In Fiji
1

Australian foreign minister Julie

Bishop has been updated on Fiji's
progress towards its first democratic
elections in nearly a decade.
Fiji has promised to hold elections
on 17 September, the first since the
country's leader Rear Admiral (retired)
Voreqe Bainimarama seized power in a
military coup in 2006.
Fiji was suspended from the
Commonwealth
in
2009
after
Commodore Bainimarama failed
to meet a deadline to return it to
democracy.
But the federal government is keen to
normalize Australia's frosty ties with
Fiji, and started by lifting travel bans
on senior military and government
figures in March.
Bishop on Tuesday met her Fijian
counterpart Ratu Inoke Kubuabola,
where she emphasized Australia's
strong support for the electoral
process.
Australia has accepted in-principle
an invitation from Fiji to co-lead an
international observer group to oversee
the election, and is finalizing the terms
of reference for the mission.
The two foreign leaders also discussed
preparatory work to re-establish
defence ties between the two nations.
It's illegal under Australian law to sell
weapons to Fiji or provide military
advice.
Meanwhile, the Queen of England,

Julie Bishop Restates Support For Fiji

Election And Queen's Interest In Fiji
Continued From Page 1
Queen Elizabeth II has a special
interest towards Fiji.
This was conveyed by British High
Commissioner Roderick Drummond
at her birthday celebrations at his
residence on Monday.
Drummond, during his speech at the
event, said he and his wife Yasmin had
a private audience with the Queen last
week at Buckingham Palace.
(It) is something granted to all new
high commissioners. It was a private
audience, so I cannot divulge the
details, Drummond said.
But I will say that I was astonished
by the detailed questions and genuine
interest shown towards Fiji and its
people by Her Majesty someone
who of course has a 61-year personal
history with this place.
I was put on the spot with many
questions and she will certainly be
following events in September with
close attention.
The Queen's birthday celebrations at
the high commissioner's residence
was attended by members of the
government,
diplomatic
corps,
business sector and friends of the
British Government.
The British High Commission has
had a very busy year. We have been
busy reviving our relationships across
Fiji, renewing our links to Fijians in all
walks of life. We have enhanced our
dialogue with our Fijian partners, to
mutual benefit.
The following statement was released

from the Foreign Ministers of Australia

and Fiji, Hon Julie Bishop and Minister
Ratu Inoke Kubuabola
Today we were pleased to meet at
Australias Parliament House to
discuss our mutual commitment to
enhancing engagement between our
two countries.
The discussion provided an important
opportunity to discuss ways we can
build the bilateral relationship into a
dynamic and productive partnership.
Minister Ratu Inoke updated Minister
Bishop on Fijis further progress
towards the 17 September elections.
Minister Bishop emphasised Australias
strong support for the electoral process.
Building on Australias in-principle
acceptance of Fijis invitation to colead a Multinational Observer Group
to observe the elections, Minister
Bishop said she looked forward to the
finalisation of the terms of reference
for the mission.
Reflecting the growing official
engagement, the two Foreign Ministers
discussed a wide range of issues of
common interest to both countries,
including strengthening dialogue and
people-to-people links. Preparatory
work to re-establish defence ties was
also discussed.
The expansion of trade and economic
relations was highlighted, including
programs to promote labour mobility
between both countries.
The meeting was a constructive
example of the commitment of
Australia and Fiji to deepening and
strengthening the relationship.

Police Address Crimes Against

Women

POLICE officers from the Eastern

Division have been reminded to put
an end to violence against women and
remain committed to the law and not
be biased.
The remarks were made at the opening
of the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre police
training on gender, violence against
women, human rights and legal issues
at the Fiji Police Academy workshop in
Suva.
Police Commander Eastern SSP Jekope
Lako encouraged officers to take full
advantage of what the FWCC had to
offer and learn as much as they could.
SSP Lako said the numbers could be
reduced even further and the training
by the FWCC would provide the
knowledge of how this could be
achieved.

He also highlighted while crimes

against women were on the decline,
there was still a great number of reports
against the conduct of police officers,
especially when dealing with cases of
violence against women.
He said this needed to stop and he
was confident that this training would
prepare officers to deal with such cases.
"I salute you for your effort in the
decrease of offences involving women
and children and we must not rest here
in fighting against the perpetrators and
must ensure they face the full brunt of
the law," SSP Lako said.
SSP Lako reaffirmed the Fiji Police
Force's commitment to working with
the FWCC and stakeholders to end all
forms of violence against women and
children.

Proposed One Fiji To Apply For

Registration

Another proposed party is expected

to enter the political scene soon
ahead of the September 17 election.
Proposed One Fiji Party spokesperson
and volunteer, Laisa Digitaki, says
it is made up of members who hope
to "reclaim Fiji and her peoples true
spirit of love back to the hearts of all
Fiji citizens." The proposed party, she
further says, seeks to elect honorable
and competent generation of leaders to
Fiji's parliament with the sole purpose
of bringing together all Fiji citizens.
"The spirit of one source, one people,
one Fiji can be manifested through
these new breed of Fiji leaders who

possess and exercise servant hood

leadership principles based on love,
joy, peace, forbearance, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness
and self-control," Digitaki said. The
proposed is currently collecting and
vetting members signatures from
across Fiji before they apply for
registration with the Political Parties
Registrar. As it stands, five political
parties have been registered so far and
they are FijiFirst, Fiji Labour Party
(FLP), National Federation Party
(NFP), Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP), and the Social Democratic
Liberal Party (SODELPA).

Revenue Increase

FIJI recorded a 5 per cent increase in

tourism earnings for the first quarter
of this year compared with the
corresponding quarter last year.
According to the Fiji Bureau of
Statistics, an estimated $285.9million
was recorded for this period compared
with earnings of $272.4m over the
March quarter in 2013.
"Fiji earned about $350m for the last
quarter of last year and $400m in third
quarter of last year," said government
statistician Epeli Waqavonovono.
"No doubt an increase in visitor
arrivals from Australia had an effect on
the increase."
He said Australian visitors contributed

$156.2m or 54.6 per cent of the total

earnings compared with $140m
recorded over the corresponding
quarter last year.
About $30.5m or 10.7 per cent of
earnings were attributed to New
Zealand visitors.
"Australia, New Zealand, US and
Continental Europe were major tourism
source markets.
"These major tourism source markets
accounted for 80.1 per cent of the total
earnings in the March quarter of 2014, an
increase of 2.4 per cent when compared
with the March quarter of 2013, which
was 77.8 per cent of the total earnings,"
Mr Waqavonovono said.

Ms Ucumasi said being poor was

Australian High Commissions Deputy

Head of Mission Karinda DAloisio
said Year Fixed the AQEP programme

Australia would inject A$50million
2.69%
(F$93m) into Fijis education over five
years.
Ms DAloisio made this comment
while opening the 4th Stakeholders
Meeting of the Access to Quality
Education Programme at Holiday Inn
Suva.
She said the AQEP programme was a
significant investment for Australia.
AQEP is an investment which
highlights the Australian governments
strong and ongoing support of the
children of Fiji, Ms DAloisio said.
This represents an injection into
Fijis education sector of A$50million
or F$93million Fiji dollars over five
years.
In 2014, the assistance to the Fiji
education sector through AQEP would

be around A$9 million Australian

dollars, which is Year Four of the fiveyear plan.
Ms DAloisio said education was
the key pillar of the Australian aid
programme.
We believe access to quality education
is every childs right. As a mother I
know how important education is to the
life of children, Ms DAloisio said.
Quality education also bridges
economic growth and reduces poverty.
Ms DAloisio said she was really
pleased to see that the number of
children with disability involved in
Ratu Latianara Secondary School in
Serua had increased substantially from
around nine at the last count.
AQEP focuses on improving the
ability of children from very poor
communities including children with
disability to enroll and stay in school,
she said.

$15K For Informant

AN informant who helped the Fiji

Revenue and Customs Authority with
the successful recovery of $159,000 in
unpaid taxes has been rewarded about
$15,000 this week.
FRCA CEO Jitoko Tikolevu said this
was the first time for the authority to
exercise its reward system under the
Whistleblower Policy.
He said the successful recovery of
$159,000 in unpaid taxes was made
after the authority conducted tax audits.
"A whistleblower that provides
information or documents to the
authority contributing significantly to
the success of the investigation and
prosecution by the authority shall be
entitled to at least 10 per cent of the
tax revenue recovered as a monetary
or non-monetary reward," he said in a
statement yesterday.
"The informant had provided relevant
information of tax evasion about
the business last year, which was
investigated and resulted in the
subsequent recovery of $150,000 in
taxes."
He said the Whisleblower Policy was

intended to encourage and enable any

worker, member of management or
board of directors of FRCA or external
stakeholders including members of
the public to disclose any serious
concerns or report any serious wrong
within FRCA rather than ignoring such
a problem and "blowing the whistle"
outside.
The Whistleblower Policy came into
effect in 2012 and this is the first time a
reward had been paid out.
"A total of 66 cases were reported to
FRCA under the Whistleblower Policy
last year and a further 11 cases since
the beginning of this year. We treat
all information confidential and we
also do not reveal the identity of the
informants," he said.
"However, if the whistleblower's
concerns required any further action,
he or she, may at some future date
would be required to act as a witness
and/or provide evidence."
He said members of the public were
encouraged to report any Customs, tax
evasion or ethical conduct concerns of
officers to FRCA.

Volunteers To Assist With Rural

Consumer Complaints

Members of the public living in the

remote areas around the country who
have been unfairly treated by traders
can now voice their concerns through
the Community Consumer Advisory
Group.
Eight people who have volunteered
and live in Savusavu, Taveuni, Bua,
Seaqaqa, Wainikoro, Sigatoka, Tavua
and Navua were at the launch of the
group and will provide free help,

support and advice to the consumers.

Consumer Council of Fiji CEO
Premila Kumar said the advisory
group will assist consumers in dealing
with problems in rural areas and outer
islands.
The eight representatives of the

The eight representatives are part of a

Electronic Cigarettes Now

Regulated

The Ministry of Health has achieved

another milestone, as for the first
time, electronic cigarette (e-cigarettes)
retailers will now have to be registered
and licensed.
This call comes after Cabinet endorsed
the Health Ministrys Amendments to
the Tobacco Control Decree 2010 to
regulate e-cigarettes.
A Cabinet meeting on October 14 last
year reflected its full support and agreed
that e-cigarette should be regulated
with special emphasis on the following
areas; manufacturers, importers and
retailers to be registered and licensed
annually, ban on advertising and
promotion of the product, ban on
the sales to persons under the age
of 18years, and ban the use of these
products in certain public places.
The need to regulate e-cigarettes came
about as it was aggressively entering
into global, regional and domestic
markets with unproven claims of safety
and efficacy as smoking cessation aids.
This had also prompted all states that
are Party to the Framework Convention

on Tobacco Control to regulate

e-cigarettes.
The World Health Organization
(WHO) is currently reviewing the
existing evidence around e-cigarettes
and other electronic nicotine delivery
system (ENDS) to determine their
safety and efficacy.
WHO is also working with national
regulatory bodies to look at regularity
options as well as toxicology experts
to understand more about the impact
e-cigarettes may have on health.
E-cigarettes are defined as any
electronic device consisting of a
battery-powered heating element,
cartridge and atomizer that is shaped
like a cigarette, cigar or pipe designed
to deliver nicotine or other substances
to a user in the form of a vapour.
The Ministry of Health therefore aims
to support the government in making
and enforcing policies that protect the
health of present and future generations
of Fiji from the devastating health
consequences, as well as the economic
and social burden of tobacco use.

Hefty Fines For Unfair Second-Hand Car

Dealers

Second-hand motor vehicle dealers

who are found to engage in unfair

Chaudhrys Arresting Officer Stands For FLP

A former top ranking police officer
who arrested Fiji Labour Party
leader Mahendra Chaudhry in
2010 for violating the Public Order
Decree will contest the election for
the party. Sekaia Suluka, a former
Assistant Superintendent of Police
who arrested Chaudhry in Rakiraki
for holding a public gathering
without a permit was among 28
people the FLP has earmarked to be
their representative. Suluka said he
had always wanted to be a politician
after his civil service career ended,
but he never imagined it would be
with a party of the man he arrested
in 2010. Two parties had come to

ask me to join them but I had waited.

I then decided to apply to the Fiji
Labour Party," Suluka said. I wrote
to them even before they advertised
for candidates and four days later
they called me in for an interview."
He admitted he had forgotten about
the 2010 incident when he applied.

When the party leader reminded me,

then I remembered. "I told him, if I
hadnt gone to arrest you that day,
I would have already been in the
village picking coconuts, the Vanua
Levu man said. Suluka now looks
forward to begin campaigning with
the FLP and contest the elections.

Fiji Airways Switches To Better

Meals

Fiji Airways is overhauling its entire

on-board flight experience. This
is being rolled out in stages; some
effective immediately, some in a few
months time.
The one which would make many
people happy is the change in the
inflight meals.
The ill-received lunchbox is being
replaced by hot meals which actually
have a real and much better taste.
Fiji Airways managing director/chief
executive, Stefan Pichler, said their
meals have been generally referred
to as poor quality, choice & meal
presentation.
Our new menu design reflects time
of departure, length of flight, a more
balanced meal to better meet customer
needs by route, he said.
The other changes are in the inflight
entertainment which is now all free, a
redesigned inflight magazine and better
duty free product offering.

Cost of changes
Whilst one may think introducing new
meals as well as the other suit changes
would cost Fiji Airways more money,
Mr Pichler does not think so.
He said this was all about doing things
smarter.
For example the Bula box cost more
than the tray which we have replaced it
with, he said.
Mr Pichler said this was because they
were producing the box and then
throwing it away while the tray gets
reused.
We have considerable savings
changing from the box to the tray. We
have used all these savings to upgrade
the food, he said.
As for the free inflight entertainment
now, Mr Pichler said they were hardly
making any money out of this any
ways. The inflight entertainment will
not cost us much as we hardly anyone
was paying for it, he said.

The father of one of two students in

Avishkar telephoned the Fiji Sun
newsroom to cancel an interview
because his father had been rushed to
the hospital.
This was the second time Mr Singh
had been rushed to the Colonial War
Memorial Hospital in Suva since he
lodged a complaint with the Nabua
Police Station.
Avishkar said his father was first taken
to CWM after he complained to the
police last Tuesday.

The complaint was over a video

of Avishkar and a female student
sitting and chatting in a bus taken
by someone and shown to a teacher.
The two students were later allegedly
asked to sign a document without any
knowledge of the content, according to
the complaint
The principal, Pratibha Chandra,
declined to respond saying the matter
was under Police investigation.
Kamlesh Arya, the spokesperson
for the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji
which owns the school, also refused to
comment because it was in the hands
of the Police.
Police
spokesperson,
Inspector
Atunaisa Sokomuri, has confirmed
they are continuing their investigation.

Nurse Suspended
A nurse has been suspended in relation
to an incident where a baby was
delivered dead at birth at the Colonial
War Memorial Hospital.
Last Monday Fiji Police Force
spokesperson, Inspector Atunaisa
Sokomuri, said the 27-year-old mother
was having labour pains and went to
Navua Hospital.
Akisi
Naiuruuru
of
Vakacegu
Settlement in Navua was expecting her
third baby to arrive on June 28.
At Navua Hospital, she was allegedly
told by a staff nurse to find her way to
the CWM Hospital since her file was
with them, Inspector Sokomuri said.
He said the complainant travelled in a

taxi to the CWM Hospital however the

baby died during delivery.
Minister for Health Dr Neil Sharma
said they had immediately suspended
the Navua-based nurse who was
alleged to have misdirected the mother.
This is an appalling case as a patient
in labour should have been examined
and because of her medical condition
should have been transferred to CWM
Hospital in a Navua-based ambulance
with a nurse escort, Dr Sharma said.
He said the question of the still birth
needed to be fully investigated by
their team as this may or may not have
resulted from the irregular method of
referral.

Fiji Airways Unveils Inflight

Overhaul

After a few months of consolidating

feedback from guests, benchmarking and
testing, Fiji Airways unveiled an overhaul
of its onboard product enhancements at
the Holiday Inn in Suva.
The launch marked a refreshing and
revamped inflight experience for
travellers on Fiji Airways aircraft
across the economy and business
classes.
Fiji Airways managing director and
CEO Stefan Pichler said the overhaul
included removing its previous boxedpresentation concept and most of
the burger and wrap selections, and
reintroducing tray service with hot
meals.
"The overhaul includes meals across

our international network for economy

class and a refresh of our business
class dining with the introduction of a
signature dish," he said.
"The signature dish has been inspired
by renowned Fiji-based chef Lance
Seeto. Members of the Fiji Chefs
Association and Air Terminal Services
(ATS) Fiji had also been invited to
work with the airline on future menu
cycles to ensure that the food served
onboard is Fijian inspired."
He said the changes to inflight catering
came into effect alongside free inflight
entertainment. Other changes were
made to inflight duty-free and inflight
magazine, which would be rolled out
in stages.

Berwick's death in 2007 as Fiji's Office
of the Director of Public Prosecutions

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)

The DPP however says it will pursue

will be made by the Director of Public

said.

Journalist Treatment

USP Journalism academics have

spoken out against the treatment of two
senior journalists during the Pacific
Islands Development Forum (PIDF)
Second Summit in Nadi last week.
Acting Journalism Coordinator Patrick
Craddock and lecturer in journalism
at USP, Dr. Matthew Thompson have
expressed their outrage that one of
Fiji's top journalists, Samisoni Pareti
was denied accreditation to the PIDF
and police allegedly harassed Netani
Rika, Communications Manager for
the Pacific Conference of Churches.
Claims are that Pareti was denied
accreditation to the PIDF summit last
week without explanation while Rika
was allegedly visited by police multiple
times at his Nadi Hotel.
Craddock said it was an indication
of "the way the military government
intimidates journalists" leading up to
the general election. Meanwhile, in a
statement, Fiji's Ministry of Information
(MINFO) which was responsible
for organising media accreditation
to the meet said Rikas application

After A Long Time Post Fiji

Records Profit In 2012

An increase in domestic postal rates in

2012 and dedicated cost controls have
led to Post Fiji recording a profit in
2012. This is after a very long time.
The Permanent Secretary for Public
Enterprises,
Elizabeth
Powell,
confirmed this, however, did not reveal
the exact figure.
She said it was a small one but still was
a profit.
Ms Powell said their expectations are
for the 2013 profit to be better because
of the postal rate increase in late 2012.
The postal rate increase was the
boost, she said.
Appointment of CEO
Meanwhile, on the appointment of a
chief executive, Post Fiji chairman,
Lawrence Tikaram has confirmed
a shortlist and the best preferred
candidates name has been submitted
to the Ministry of Public Enterprises.
This person was interviewed by
independent agency and was deemed
to be the best to take Post Fiji Limited

into a new era, Ms Powell said.

She said the appointment of a chief
executive is being processed.
Post Fiji has submitted their
recommendations which the ministry
has analysed and reviewed against
other state-owned enterprises and done
due diligence and it is being processed
further, she said.
We do all sorts of things besides
checking the credentials, salary and
benefits and putting that into context of
other state-owned enterprises.
And we also look at the FIUs
acceptance
of
international
acceptance and then we provide our
recommendation.
Mr Tikaram feels with all Government
support, an appointment of a chief
executive should provide a faster
platform for change for the better of
Post Fiji, its staff and customers.
The biggest challenged for Post Fiji is
to have someone appointed as soon as
possible, he said.

Security Data Solution

SECURITY data solution is everybody's
business and each individual is
responsible and accountable for
ensuring that his network is secured
and safe, says GEM IT Solutions
managing director Dennis Fong.
Mr Fong made the comment during a
one-day workshop at the Holiday Inn in
Suva on security data solutions that enable
organisations to secure their network,
systems, users and data through Dell
SonicWALL wired and wireless solutions.
"The event is aimed at helping

customers understand the importance

of data security in data centres and
how to protect business data and
critical information from hacking by
implementing firewalls," he said.
"Participants will be able to understand
and manage securing data solutions
that would enable them to give proper
and timely report and taking right
actions whenever required."
The workshop was organised by Dell
SonicWALL in collaboration with its
local partner, GEM IT Solutions.

Parents Educated On Child

Nutrition

The Health Ministry has noted that a

number of parents do not know what
type of food is to be given to children.
The Ministry organised a Maternal
Child Health Clinic in Suva this week
where medical staff also came across
children from preschools that were
underweight.
Maternal and Child Health Nurse,
Sangeeta Sharma said they gave
parents health tips on when and which
type of food has to be given to children.
Sharma said parents should supervise
their children when they are having
their meals.
Sharma said they will be organising
a similar clinic during the Hibiscus
Festival.

For Airport Upgrade

WESTPAC Fiji's commitment as

Airport's multi-million dollar upgrade
has been hailed as an indication
of private sector confidence in the
economy.
Minister for Civil Aviation and
Public Enterprises and AttorneyGeneral Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said
a lot of state-owned enterprises were
dependant on grants.
"They were seen, essentially, as entities
that just barely made the profit, if they
did at all, but they weren't stand-long

organisations and that's what we want,"

he said.
"We want state-owned enterprises to be
run like a private company and indeed,
that is what AFL is actually achieving."
He said AFL was doing well compared
with its performance a few years ago.
"It's got very good cash flows. Westpac
should be happy with that and I'm sure
the fact that Westpac has partnered with
AFL for the project is an indication
of the confidence they have with the
company and indeed we have a lot of
confidence."

Ministry Of Agriculture Moves On To Assist Non-Sugar

Farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture has

achieved another milestone following
the signing of a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) to assist farmers
improve their soil fertility and increase
farm production.
The Ministry recently signed the MOU with
South Pacific Fertilizer (SPF), Agriculture
Chemical of Fiji Limited (AGCHEM
LTD) and Basic Industries Limited for the
supply of fertilizers to farmers.
Ministry's Permanent Secretary Ropate
Ligairi said the three Companies will
supply fertilizers of various categories
targeting the non-sugar farmers.
Mr Ligairi said working in partnership
with the stakeholders, the Ministry
aims to develop agriculture in Fiji for
better economic returns.
He said they needed to work with
farmers in areas such as the use of
fertilizers in crops that will guarantee
food and nutrition security.

The Ministrys chief economist

Ilimeleki Kaiyanuyanu said the fertilizer
subsidy program was an initiative
by the Ministry aimed at improving
farmers production capabilities (nonsugar crops), reducing farm overheads
as well as stabilising soil quality by
maintaining the soil pH level.
Mr Kaiyanuyanu said in order for
the fertilizers to be distributed in a
transparent manner it was important
to have clear Standard Operating
Procedures (SOP) and guidelines that
governed its distribution.
The SOP outlines the procedures in terms
of collection, delivery, authorisation level,
payments, monitoring and follow up.
He added that as a responsible
organization, the Ministry of Agriculture
will ensure that the funds given by
Government for this program are put to
good use and fertilizers distributed in a
fair and accountable manner.

Companies Encouraged To Report Benefits

THE South Pacific Stock Exchange

is encouraging companies to enter the
2014 annual report competition for the
financial year ending within the period
of January 1, 2013 and December 31,
2013.
SPSE CEO Jinita Prasad said
participating organisations could
see the benefits of being part of the
competition, which put an edge within

companies to endeavour on improving

the quality of reporting and adhering
to the extant accounting disclosure
requirements as well as corporate
governance principles.
"The judging criteria focused on
the objectives of the organisation
including its mission statements, aims,
objectives, the chairperson and chief
executive Reports, presentation of

MULTI
CULTURE

financials, timeliness and compliance

with accounting standards.
"Winning a prestigious award provides
further evidence that your creativity,
hard work and talent adds extra value
to how an annual report is perceived by
the various users.
"Similar to previous years, this year's
panel of judges consists of seven
independent members which includes

top level financial experts who have

substantial experience in a broad
range of areas including accounting,
auditing, tax, legal and consulting
activities and more importantly in
compiling, inspecting and assessing
annual reports."
She said the competition was open
for four categories with deadline for
submissions on July 15.

RFMF Commander Speaks

Out

Politicians must leave the Republic

of Fiji Military Forces out of their
political campaign, says Commander
Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga.
He was responding to reactions to an
interview he made with the Australian
daily, The Age, in March.
The Commander said the interview
was wrongly interpreted by University
of the South Pacific (USP) lecturer, Dr
Matthew Thompson. Dr Thompson
said in reference to the article, that
Brigadier-General Tikoitoga seems to
be sending a strong message to Fijians
to shut up and fall in line.
The Commander said that what the
RFMF did in 2006 was for the security
of the nation. He said they were
committed to the new roadmap put
in place by the then president, Ratu
Josefa Iloilo, for Fiji to return to a
truly democratic country after the 2014
general elections.
He said Dr Thompsons interpretation
of his interview was uncalled for
especially when it tarnished the
reputation of the RFMF.
The Commander reminded all that it
was the militarys responsibility to
support the government of the day.
At the moment, he said, it was the
Bainimarama-led government and they
would support it.
And when elections come, well
support the democratically elected

government that comes into power, he

said.
Concerning Samisoni Pareti and
Netani Rika not given accreditation
to the Pacific Islands Development
Forum last week, Patrick Craddock,
the acting journalism co-ordinator of
the USP journalism programme said:
This is one more indicator of the way
the military government intimidates
journalists leading up to the general
election.
The Commander reminded Mr
Craddock that there was no military
government in Fiji and the RFMF had
nothing to do with the PIDF media
accreditation report.
The Fiji Labour Party had also criticised
the commander saying that the RFMF
would not tolerate re-writing the 2013
Constitution.
The Commander called on political
parties and politicians to be fair to the
electorates when talking about such
changes. He reminded politicians
that the RFMF, as the protector of the
Constitution, would like to see that the
legal procedures are followed as outlined
in the Constitution for any changes.
He said Section 160 of the Constitution
explained in detail the procedures to be
followed.
There are no other procedures and the
RFMF will stand by the procedures in
the Constitution.

Talanoa Success For FNPF

THE Fiji National Provident Fund

(FNPF) talanoa session was a success.
The talanoa session attracted residents
of Nakasi, Narere and nearby areas
and was part of an effort by the fund to
take its services to the community and
to address queries and concerns from
members. The talanoa awareness team
was led by the fund's assistant general
manager member services, Alipate
Waqairawai.
In a statement , Mr Waqairawai
reiterated the importance for members
to get the right information from FNPF
staff members and not be subjected
to rumours that some were spreading
about the fund.
He encouraged villagers to use those
sessions as a platform to ask questions
about the fund's role, investments,
benefits and its future plans.
Voluntary member Kinijoji Lawaka

said the talanoa session at Nakasi

High School allowed him to better
understand the role of the fund.
"The information I heard was
unreliable and I was receiving advice
from different people encouraging me
to withdraw my money and invest it
elsewhere," he said.
He said the fund also made it easier for
him to get his joint Fiji Revenue and
Customs Authority/FNPF identification
registration without having to travel to
the customer service centre in Suva.
"This will benefit those that may not
have the money and time to travel all
the way to Suva and to stand in a queue
waiting to be served," he said.
Schoolteacher Kamal Chand said the
talanoa session was customer focused.
The fund will continue talanoa sessions
and workplace seminars in the months
to come.

HFC Approves First Home Loan

Scheme

HFC Bank has become the first

bank in the country to approve a
homeownership grant loan in support
of Governments bid to have more
home owners in the country.
HFC merged its Home Loan Product
with the Government grant so that it
would be suitable for the people of Fiji,
the bank said.
Super Dream Government Grant
Package was made available to the
public the past two weeks and has been
receiving a lot of enquiries.
Attorney-General and Minister for
Industry and Trade, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum announced this during
the launch of the Westpac Prime
Ministers Exporter of the Year Awards
on Tuesday.
The first application has been approved
is through HFC, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum
said.
Upendra Goundar was provided the
first approval under the scheme.
HFC
chief
executive,
Isikeli
Tikoduadua said in a statement the
application processed the past two

weeks was given to the Ministry

of Housing and received an almost
immediate approval.
This product is very unique with
equity of just 10 per cent and the grant
can be used as equity he said.
The interest rate is 4.25 per cent fixed
for 12 months and 6.7 per cent variable
and in addition, the maximum term of
the loan is 30 years.
HFC Bank also has discounted the
establishment fee by 25 per cent to all
first home loan borrowers and there
is no monthly service fee to this loan
package.
This grant was announced last year
during the 2014 National Budget
announcements
by
the
Prime
Minister Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe
Bainimarama.
Under this allocation, a grant of
$10,000 will be available for building
a home and a grant of $5,000 will be
available for buying a home.
The programme would be means tested
and will run on a first-come, first-serve
basis.

Kava Concern
EXCESSIVE kava consumption,
transportation, and laxity in proper
means of communications were some
of the issues youths from Lomaiviti
continuously struggle to overcome on
a daily basis.
These challenges are often raised
by youths in the Lomaiviti Province
because they affect their livelihood and
in moving forward, through developing
their skills and knowledge.
Lomaiviti youth co-ordinator Sarah
Tafoou said youths in the Lomaiviti
Group had ample land to farm and
most of which were used for yaqona
and dalo farming.
"Even though youths in the province
have such resources and are willing to
start their business, there is no proper
means of transportation for them to

transport their produce to the markets

where it can be sold," Ms Tafoou said.
"Apart from the transport worry, there
is no market available for those who
are interested to export goods overseas
too."
She said another problem was the
excessive consumption of kava by
youths. This, she said continued to be a
major problem for many youths around
the division.
"Kava consumption really slows down
a person's performance and youths
need to try and overcome drinking too
much.
"The time spent on drinking kava could
be utilised in producing vegetables or
root crops from the farm, so youths
need to manage their time well when it
comes to excessive kava consumption."

The Billion Dollar Drug

Bust

MARIJUANA has been the known

drug produced in the country since time
immemorial. It is said to have been
introduced in Fiji by the indentured
labourers from India. Although illegal,
marijuana has been grown in the country
for decades and is still being cultivated
in various places and is available on
the streets of the urban centres and in
residential areas. However, little did
people know 10 years ago that apart
from the cultivation of marijuana,
another drug was also being produced
in the country, but in a laboratory.
While the police were focusing their
attention on raiding marijuana farms
then as they usually do, they received
information about the existence of
an Asian crime syndicate in Fiji. The
information specified that the group
was involved in manufacturing crystal
methamphetamine, which is commonly
known as ice on the streets, and it did
shock the police. For many people then,
ice was something found or kept in a
refrigerator as the only drug they knew
available then was marijuana. But ice
is a widely known drug now. The Fiji
Times takes a look back at the billion
dollar drug bust, which was classified
by INTERPOL as the biggest in the
Southern Hemisphere in 2004. We
bring you an exclusive interview with
the police officer who was in charge
of Operation Outrigger that resulted in
the drug bust.
It is a decade now since the biggest
drug raid was carried out in Fiji.
While previous raids by the police
resulted in the uprooting of hundreds
of marijuana plants, this particular raid
in 2004 netted something else.
Apart from the local media,
international news organisations also
reported on the early morning raid
carried out on June 9, 2004.
On June 10, 2004, we reported that
$1billion worth of ice and chemicals
used to manufacture it were seized in a
raid on a laboratory.
But while comments in the media
regarding the raid were attributed to
senior police officers who did not play
a direct part in the bust, there was
someone who kept a low profile at that
time.
He was the Assistant Commissioner
of Police Henry Brown, who was the
inspector in charge of the Transnational
Crime Unit in 2004. He was in charge
of Operation Outrigger.
ACP Brown, who is the Police Force's
Chief Administration Officer now,
agreed to talk on the specifics of the
investigation leading up to the moment
the raid was carried out on June 9,
2004.
The police force received information
about the existence of an Asian crime
gang in Fiji and a joint team was
formed with the Fiji Revenue and
Customs Authority.
"I was inspector in charge of the
Transnational Crime Unit and I formed

a team of seven police officers and three

customs officers to do surveillance,"
said ACP Brown.
"No one knew about the team apart
from the very senior officers and we
worked on the case for 13 months,
piece by piece.
"The information we had was that
the operation was financed from
Hong Kong and the syndicate was in
Malaysia. We shared information with
Australian and New Zealand police.
"Slowly, the Hong Kong and Malaysian
police came in. It was a typical Asian
organised crime syndicate and there
was a very typical response by the
multinational organisations."
ACP Brown said the team of police and
Customs officers could not believe the
information that was coming in and
the things that were rolling into the
country.
He said the team kept a close watch
on hundreds of gallons of chemicals
coming in, the money trail and the
movement of the Asian crime syndicate
members in and out of the country.
"But we managed and the same team
that did the surveillance was part of the
raid, reporting direct to the police and
customs hierarchy.
"Apart from the hierarchy, no one else
knew about Operation Outrigger, which
was the code name for the operation.
"We just gave that code name and
there was no particular reason for it.
If I mentioned outrigger to someone
during my conversation, then only that
person would know what it was," said
ACP Brown.
On June 10, 2004, we reported that
four Asian nationals and three Fijians
were arrested in the raids carried out at
a warehouse in Laucala Beach Estate
at 3am the previous day and at some
homes.
Five kilograms of ice and chemicals
used to manufacture the drugs were
seized during the raid at the warehouse.
ACP Brown said 35 officers from the
Police Tactical Response Unit and
30 from the Criminal Investigations
Department team were prepared for
the raid.
He said the seven police officers
and three Customs officers doing
surveillance for the past 13 months
were also part of the team that raided
the warehouse and the homes.
"The raid was carried out early in
the morning after the Police Tactical
Response Unit team was briefed. The
CID team was on standby to interview
the suspects.
"It was a very well thought out
operation. After briefing the officers,
we then hit the warehouse at Laucala
Beach Estate and some homes that
were also under surveillance.
"There were simultaneous raids in
Hong Kong and Malaysia too at the
same time we raided the warehouse
and the homes of the suspects."
ACP Brown said local police officers

surrounded the laboratory where the

chemicals were kept to manufacture
ice. He said experts from New Zealand
were called in to enter the laboratory.
He said laboratories to manufacture
hard drugs such as ice could be at the
back of a room or even in a motel room.
But, he said the warehouse at Laucala
Beach Estate was a super laboratory,
which was only possible through
organised crime rackets.
He said the drugs seized during the raid
were destroyed while the equipment
and chemicals confiscated from the
warehouse were shipped to New
Zealand.
"We didn't have the equipment and

facilities to destroy them here so

they were sent to New Zealand to be
destroyed as they have the facility.
"The chemicals that were in the
laboratory would have destroyed half
of Laucala Beach Estate and other
nearby areas if there was an explosion."
ACP Brown said the drug bust was
classified by Interpol as the largest in
the Southern Hemisphere in 2004.
He said the $1b worth of ice would
have flooded the market in America,
Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
"The $1b drug bust is a highlight of my
career as I was overseeing the entire
operation, from surveillance to the time
the raids were carried out," he said.

Hindu Devotees During

Firewalking Ceremony
ABOUT 2300 Hindu devotees gathered
at the Lovu Sangam Temple on the
outskirts of Lautoka early last Sunday
morning for the annual firewalking
ceremony.
Temple committee president Daniel
Raju said preparations for the event
began with the procession of a statue of
the goddess Mariamman to devotees'
homes in the five days leading up to the
firewalking ceremony.
Mariamman means Mother Mari in
Tamil.
The deity is revered as the goddess
of rain and is closely associated with

the goddess of time, change and

destruction, Kali.
"We held a procession with her statue
from Drasa to Naikabula and that is
why it takes five days of preparation
before we hold the firewalking
ceremony in the early morning of the
prescribed day," he said.
"The youngest person who walked across
the hot coals was four years old and the
eldest was 92-year-old Permal Poojari."
Mr Raju said the temple had been
holding firewalking rituals since 1920
and 32 people participated in the
firewalking ceremony this year.

Constitution Will Be Amended,

Says FLP, SODELPA
Fiji's Labour Party and the Social
Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA)
are adamant about plans to amend the
constitution in Parliament if elected
into government.
This despite statements made
by Fiji Military head BrigadierGeneral Mosese Tikoitoga in
overseas media saying that while
the military will accept the outcome
of the election, it will not allow any
elected government to amend the
constitution.
However, FLP and SODELPA, which
confirmed plans to form a coalition after
the September 17 election maintain the

2013 Constitution does not reflect the

will of the people.
The constitution will have to be
amended by the new Parliament,
Chaudhry said.
He said not amending the document
would mean allowing all the current
decrees that restrict people's rights
to continue to be in force. He further
called on the military to respect the
will of the people.
FLP calls on the army to show support
for a constitution for Fiji which is
genuinely democratic, will ensure
transparency and good governance and
provide political stability.

$5M Energy Boost

ANZ Fiji has become the fund manager
and participating financial institution
for a facility of $US5million ($F9.2m)
to help customers purchase renewable
energy equipment.
Those equipment, according to ANZ
Pacific and Fiji CEO Vishnu Mohan,
would support three renewable energy
technologies solar PV, pico-hydro
and coconut oil biodiesel.
The commercial bank has so far funded
about $14m under this initiative, which
was set up under a "risk sharing fund"
agreement.
This aligns perfectly with ANZ Group's
commitment to assist customers with
the transition to a low carbon future, he
said.
Speaking at the Pacific Islands
Development Forum (PIDF) second
Summit in Nadi last week, Mr Mohan
said they renewed their partnership with
the World Bank and Fiji's Department

of Energy to support the sustainable

energy project.
"ANZ has been a key partner
in syndicating with the China
Development Bank for funding of the
multi-million dollar Fiji Electricity
Authority's Nadarivatu hydro dam
scheme, for which we are now the sole
financier," he said.
As the largest bank in the region with
a presence in 12 Pacific countries, he
said they could make an important
contribution by working with their
customers and partners to drive social
and environmental sustainability
improvements.
"We want to help provide such a
foundation for the nations of the
Pacific to grow, through responsible
and sustainable business practices
for the sake of our customers, our
people, communities, suppliers and the
environment."

143 Youths In Jail

More than 140 youths in the age

category of 16-20 years of age are
incarcerated in Fiji Corrections Service
facilities around the country.
This revelation was made by Assistant
Superintendent Isireli Dausiga of
the Fiji Corrections Service at the
Assemblies of God High School
in Kinoya, Suva during their Drug
Awareness Week.
We have a total of 1536 inmates that
are in our corrections facilities around
the country out of which there are 143
inmates in the age category of 16-20
years of age, Mr Dausiga said.
He said the figure was alarming
because these youths were supposed
to be in school, tertiary institutes and
even working.
But instead, they are spending months
and years behind bars because of
various crimes they had committed.

Mr Dausiga reminded the students to

study hard and be the best that they
can.
He re-iterated the need for the students
to excel in their studies and be lawabiding citizens of this nation.
We do not want the numbers to
increase but this has been the case
because of wrong decision- making by
those that are now under our care.
He urged them to be obedient to their
parents, teachers and to do their best
academically so that they were able to
pursue their dreams in life.
The community outreach team of the
FCS has been visiting schools around
the country carrying out their Hard
Talk programme, which is aimed at
teaching students the harsh realities
of being incarcerated and the need for
students to concentrate and excel in
their education.

NZ Fijian Terminated Worker

Wins Case
Telco worker sacked for faking sick leave wins appeal
A Telecom worker sacked after accused
of faking sick leave while holidaying
in Fiji has won an appeal at the
Employment Court for being unfairly
dismissed.
Madhukar Shyam Narayan was
laid off from his job as a broadband
helpdesk specialist in 2012 after
missing three days of work and
producing a questionable Fijian
medical certificate.
Mr Narayan was on annual leave in
Fiji during the Christmas period and
was required to return to work on
December 27.
He had originally applied for leave to
return on January 3 but was declined.
On December 27, he emailed Telecom
saying he seemed "to have caught a bad
virus" and wouldn't be in to work. He
didn't mention that he was still in Fiji.
On December 29 he emailed again,
advising he was still sick and was
seeking a second medical opinion.
That night he visited a doctor at a Suva
hospital.
On his return, he produced a medical
certificate, which his manager Ricky
Henry suspected was falsified.
After a lengthy disciplinary process, Mr
Narayan's employment was terminated
in March.
The Employment Relations Authority
(ERA) ruled in Telecom's favour
last year, and said the company
had "conducted fair and reasonable
investigation before dismissing Mr
Narayan", and that he "was justifiably

dismissed".
Mr Narayan was ordered by the ERA
to pay Telecom $4000.
He appealed against the decision
with the Employment Court, and said
Mr Henry had threatened him with
violence and dismissed him on racial
grounds .
He also sought compensation and lost
wages.
Last week, the court overruled the ERA
decision, saying that while Mr Narayan
was given a fair disciplinary process,
the decision to dismiss him was "not
justifiable" and Telecom had taken "an
inappropriately suspicious stance in
the matter from the outset".
The court ruled that Mr Narayan should
receive a month's wages and $7000 in
compensation.
However, the court ruled there was not
enough evidence to suggest Mr Henry's
motives were as Mr Narayan suggested
or that threats were made against him.
Telecom Human Resources general
manager Danielle George said that
Telecom stood by its actions but would
accept the judge's decision.
"This has been a long and difficult
process for us and for Mr Narayan,
and we do not wish to stretch it out any
further," Ms George said.
"We were pleased to see that the
judge was comfortable with Telecom's
processes for handling this case."
Attempts to reach Mr Narayan for
comment were unsuccessful.

No One Evicted - Father Kevin

Barr

Jittu resident queries why she had to

move
No one from Jittu Estate is being
evicted, says Peoples Community
Network chairman Father Kevin Barr.
He was responding to statements made
by a resident who was told to move
from the area where her house was
located.
Nobody is being evicted, they are just
being relocated, Father Barr said.
Father Barr said people were given
letters and $100 to help them relocate
but only a small group of people were
yet to move.
Pushpa Wati had questioned why the
PCN wanted to lock her house.
What right do they have to lock and
take the key of my house, Ms Wati
asked.
They did not give me any reason as to
why they are locking down my house.

The 51-year-old, who has been a

resident in Jittu Estate for the past 35
years, said the PCN had no right to do
what they did.
The temporary relocation plan is to
give way for housing development.
When the housing project is
completed the relocated residents
will be given first chance to move in
to the new flats.
Meanwhile, two houses were reportedly
dismantled by the PCN on Tuesday.
The assistant director of PCN, Savu
Tawake, said the report regarding
the dismantling and burning of the
belongings was misleading.
Nobody was at home but the consent
was given by the house owner just to
pull down a wall of the house and only
the debris lying around the house was
being burnt not the belongings, Mr
Tawake said.

Bill Clinton Says Hillary 'Not Out

Of Touch' On Wealth

Former US President Bill Clinton said

on Tuesday that his wife, Hillary, is
"not out of touch," after criticism that
she had mishandled media questions
about their personal wealth.
Hillary Clinton told ABC News earlier
this month that the couple had been
"dead broke" after leaving the White
House in 2001 and then drew more
fire after suggesting to The Guardian
last weekend that the Clintons are not
"truly well off."
"It is factually true that we were several
million dollars in debt," Bill Clinton
said Tuesday of the couple's financial
situation. He was speaking to NBC

News' David Gregory, in an interview

that will air on Sunday.
Bill Clinton said his wife, a former
secretary of state and likely Democratic
presidential contender in 2016, has been
working to reduce poverty for as long
as he has known her, and that this was
reflected in her tenure in the US Senate.
The Clintons are in Denver for a
Clinton Global Initiative conference,
where Hillary Clinton is slated to
announce corporate partnerships that
could demonstrate how she uses her
proximity to wealth and influence to
help undeserved communities.
The Clintons' financial situation has
become a tricky subject for her possible
White House ambitions. Since leaving
the State Department in 2013, Hillary
Clinton has given a series of speeches
that earn her up to $US250,000 each.
Bill Clinton also delivers lucrative
speeches around the world, and tax
returns released in 2007 showed the
two had earned $US109 million jointly
since 2000. The couple owns two
homes - one in Washington and one in
New York.

Lawyer Jailed Over Client Theft

A lawyer who stole more than a quarter

of a million dollars from a 100-yearold client has been jailed and ordered
to pay compensation to a Catholic
organisation.
Peter David Kerin, 52, was found
guilty in the South Australian Supreme
Court of two counts of theft.
In jailing him for at least one year and
nine months, Justice Malcolm Blue
said one count related to $200,000
belonging to Mary Eileen Fahey.
'Miss Fahey was 100 years old at the
time you committed the offence and
you acted under an enduring power of
attorney which Miss Fahey had granted
to you and your father in 1985,' the
judge said.
In October 2007, Kerin transferred the
funds to a company account of which
he was the chief operating officer, but
they were lost over a month's trading in
derivatives.
The second count related to $85,000
belonging to Ms Fahey's estate,
following her death in November 2007.
'Ellen Cahill was one of the coexecutors of Miss Fahey's will and was

R
A
G

$350

Miss Fahey's friend for over 60 years,'

the judge said.
'In her victim impact statements she
referred to the fact that Miss Fahey left
the bulk of her estate to the Legion of
Mary to acquire headquarters for its
operations in South Australia, and that
this will not now be possible.
'She referred to the devastation that
Miss Fahey would have felt if she had
been aware of what has happened.'
Following his conviction in April,
Kerin paid $31,460 to the Legion of
Mary.
The judge ordered him to pay the
organisation the rest of the $285,000.
Kerin's name was struck off the roll
of practitioners in late 2006, after
admitting matters including acting
without the instructions of a client and
against her interest.
The judge set a maximum term of three
years and six months, and refused to
suspend the sentence.
'... the offences were serious, involving
a loss to the Legion of Mary of a very
substantial amount of money and a
fundamental abuse of trust,' he said.

Top Airlines Add Gujarati Food

To Their Menu

In view of the Gujaratis' love for

their state's cuisine, some leading
international airlines are offering
Gujarati food on long-distance flights
taking off from Ahmedabad airport.
Dubai-based
Emirates
Airlines
recently introduced Turiya Vatana
Muthia (ridge gourd and green pea
dumpling) on their flights flying out of
Ahmedabad for various destinations,
including Boston. Emirates has
simultaneously introduced specific
delicacies for travellers from Kolkata
and Kerala. Some Gujarati snacks like
'chivda' have also been introduced by
Emirates as the number of passengers
from cities like Ahmedabad has been
increasing steadily.
Etihad Airlines and British Airways are
also thinking of introducing regional
cuisines on their flights, including
Gujarati food. Interestingly, these
international airlines are offering
Indian food even on flights which do
not originate from this country. "Indian
passenger segment is something no
airline can afford to ignore. Regionspecific foods are likely to be offered
by more airlines as connectivity gets
better on international routes," said the

official of a private airline.

"India has rich a cultural diversity which
is reflected in its culinary profile. We
conducted our own in-depth research
when designing the new menus," said
Robin Padgett, senior vice-president,
Aircraft Catering, Emirates.
Air India and Jet Airways have been
serving Gujarati food on their flights
for quite some time. They offer
Gujarati food in all the three meals.
"We started serving regional food
long back. The cuisine is decided on
the basis of the point of origin of the
flights. International airlines have
woken up to growing competition
and demands of passengers. This is a
big positive for travellers," said a Jet
Airways official.
Travel services companies and tour
operators believe that this move of
international airlines will lead to more
people travelling by air from Gujarat.
"Indian travellers are extremely
conscious of availability of cuisine
options. Gujarati food is tasty, homely
and, most importantly, vegetarian ,"
said Indiver Rastogi, COO and head,
Corporate Travel, Thomas Cook
(India) Limited.

Gunmen Fire On Plane Landing

At Pakistan Airport

Gunmen fired on a Pakistan

International Airlines plane as it was
landing in the northern Pakistani city
of Peshawar on Tuesday night, killing
a woman on board and injuring three
crew members in the third incident at a
Pakistani airport this month.
Flight PK 756 was carrying 178
passengers travelling from Saudi
Arabia when it came under attack as
it was preparing to land, policeman
Asghar Khan said at the airport.
The plane was hit by six bullets, police
said, killing the Pakistani woman and
narrowly missing the captain. At least
one bullet struck the plane's engine,
police said.
The woman's daughter was sitting next
to her when she was shot in the head,
PIA official Mohammad Kifayatullah
Khan said.
"When I went inside the plane, I saw
the woman lying on the seat and her
nine-year-old daughter was crying,
'My mother is dead, my mother is
dead'," said Mr Khan.
"All the passengers were panicked.
Some of them wanted to get out as soon
as possible because they were afraid of
fire inside the plane.
"The captain of the plane had narrowly
escaped," he said. "It would have been
a disaster had he been hit."
The incident will raise further questions
about whether the government is
prepared for a Taliban backlash
after officials announced a military
operation to flush the militants from
their mountain strongholds in North

Waziristan on June 15.

Pakistani jets have pounded suspected
militant hideouts and the Taliban have
vowed counter attacks.
Islamabad has promised to tighten
security at airports and other potential
targets, but critics say decades of
neglect of Pakistan's ragged police
force has left citizens vulnerable.
On June 8, ten Taliban gunmen attacked
the airport in the southern port city of
Karachi, Pakistan's financial heart and
home to 18 million people. Thirty-four
people were killed in the five-hour gun
battle. The Taliban fired on an academy
for the security forces at the airport two
days later.
On Monday, the government was
forced to divert a plane carrying
prominent cleric Tahirul Qadri after
violence broke out on the ground in
Islamabad, with hundreds of supporters
armed with sticks battling police, who
fired teargas.
The authorities, fearing an escalation
of unrest, diverted the plane to the
eastern city of Lahore, where Mr Qadri
and his supporters refused to leave the
plane for hours.
Peshawar's Bacha Khan International
Airport has also been a target in the past
- in 2012, a Taliban suicide squad staged
a car bomb, rocket and gun attack on the
airport and nine people, including the
five attackers, were killed.
One policeman told Reuters police
will not enter the neighbourhood that
borders the airport at night for fear of
attack by extremists.

Suburb Rocked By Youth

Crimes

The murder of dairy owner Arun Kumar

has shocked the central Henderson
community. But locals say youth crime
in the area has been escalating for
months.
Already this month there have been
other instances of violent crime.
Last Monday - less than a week after
Mr Kumar was stabbed to death - a
15-year-old was the victim of an
aggravated robbery with a knife.
"Around 11.30am on Monday, the
male was walking underneath the
Sel Peacock Bridge between West
Wave and Pak 'n Save when he was
approached by a group of six to eight
males," a police spokeswoman said.
"One of the group demanded property
from him. Another brandished a knife.
"The victim was then struck on the
face a number of times and had his
schoolbag taken."
The offenders were described as being
between 16 and 25 years old.
The victim suffered a broken nose,
fractured eye socket, cuts to his mouth
and bruising.
This month, a taxi driver was assaulted in
central Henderson about 4am and his wrist
slashed by a teen with a broken bottle.
Stephanie Moore, 22, who works

across the road from Mr Kumar's

Railside Dairy, said the murder felt like
the breaking point.
"To be honest, I'm not shocked. I'm
shocked it was him, but I'm not shocked
at what's going on.
"It's just the youth of today. Something
needs to be done.
"In the two years I've been working
here I've just seen Henderson, and West
Auckland in general, it's plummeted.
It's dangerous, no one is safe."
Fiza Mohammed, 39, said there was
such a problem with youths on the
streets she didn't want to walk home
any more.
Shopkeepers in stores neighbouring
Mr Kumar's said they were scared
following the stabbing.
Area Commander Inspector Rob
Cochrane said police had been focusing
attention on central Henderson since
November, doing daily patrols.
"The feedback that we've been getting,
up until [Mr Kumar's murder], was
people were feeling a lot safer than
they had been."
People needed to report the problems
so police could deal with them, he said:
"If people feel unsafe, they need to call
us."

Brazil Gunmen Wound 9 In

World Cup Host City

Police in the Brazilian World Cup host

city of Belo Horizonte say gunmen
opened fire on a group of men in a bar
watching Monday's match between
Brazil and Cameroon.
Sgt. Jonathas Rocha is a press officer of
the Belo Horizonte police department.
He says nine men were wounded and

four of them are in critical condition.

He said that the gunmen belonged to a
drug trafficking gang settling accounts
with a rival group and that "the shooting
had nothing do with the World Cup."
He said the shooting occurred in a
slum "far away" from the Mineirao
Stadium.

China Is Building Phoenix

Towers, The Worlds Tallest Twin
Skyscrapers

CHINESE builders have ambitious

designs on erecting the worlds tallest
skyscraper, soaring more than more
3,000 feet (900 metres) into the heavens.
The Phoenix Towers, planned for the
central city of Wuhan, is set to be built
on a footprint of 70,000 square meters,
under the direction of London-based
Chetwoods Architectural Firm .
Builders hope to break ground next
year and be done in as little as three
years.
The taller of the side-by-side, $2 billion
Phoenix Towers structures is going to
be one kilometre high, designers said.
That would top the worlds current
tallest building the Khalifa Tower in

Dubai, which is 830 metres high.

Lower floors of Phoenix Towers,
which bear a modernistic resemblance
to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, would
be apartments and businesses, while
upper levels would be used as a huge
recycling plant.
The neighbouring structures would
include solar power, wind turbines and
an air-cleaning and filtration system.
Phoenix Towers might not have the title
of worlds tallest structure for long.
Builders in Saudi Arabia have plans
for the Kingdom Tower in the city of
Jeddah. That building would stand one
kilometre tall thus equaling Phoenix
Tower and could be done by 2020.

Busted Forgery Ring Faked NZ

Visas

A fake passport and visa ring busted in

India could have helped illegal aliens
sneak into New Zealand, authorities
believe.
Forgers had made visas for nearly 150
countries and illegally sent more than
100 people to Europe, Britain, the US,
Canada, Singapore, Australia, and New
Zealand, police have told The Hindu
newspaper.
A tip-off to police earlier this month
led a special central crime branch
unit to two Sri lankan nationals they
believed had been running a "thriving"
fake passport and visa racket for the
last four years.
Officers then raided the forgery
headquarters in Chennai, where they
seized seals of visas for 150 countries,
as well as 110 passports including fake
and invalid Indian and Sri Lankan ones.
Police say the scheme involved
"procuring invalid Indian passports"
for around NZ$60 and printing fake
visas on them.
The Hindu says police fear the gang
may have been helped by some
immigration authority insiders.
Four people were arrested on Sunday
and remanded in custody at Chennai's
Puzhal prison.
A US State Department report was
released which claimed New Zealand

is a "destination country" for foreign

men and women subjected to forced
labor and sex trafficking.
The department's 2014 Trafficking
in Persons Report has also labeled
New Zealand as a source country for
children subjected to sex trafficking
within the country.
Foreign men from Indonesia aboard
foreign-flagged fishing vessels in New
Zealand territorial waters were also
subjected to forced labor, debt bondage,
confiscation of passports, imposition
of significant debts, poor living and
working conditions, and physical and
sexual abuse, the report stated.
While New Zealand's Government fully
complied with the minimum standards
for the elimination of trafficking, the
report criticised the Government for not
prosecuting any trafficking offenders in
the last eight years.
Immigration
Minister
Michael
Woodhouse said new legislation
was in the pipeline to enable further
action to be taken "should evidence of
trafficking emerge".
"Although all notified allegations of
trafficking are investigated, there have
been no substantiated cases of people
trafficking.
"However, we remain alert to the
possibility."

Inquest Into Baby Boy's Hospital

Death

An obstetrician who delivered a baby

who died days later said 'We got George
out a little bit too late', an Adelaide
inquest has been told.
The baby's father, David Key, told the
inquest he was 'pretty confident' that those
were the words used by Dr Basil Antonas
when he accompanied his partner to a
consultation after his son's death.
Deputy State Coroner Elizabeth
Sheppard on Monday began the
inquest into the death of George Darcy
Key, who was born with a severe brain
injury at the North Eastern Community
Hospital on October 21, 2011.
He died on October 29 after an
emergency transfer to Flinders Medical
Centre.
Counsel assisting, Tim Griffin, said
the baby had an undersized placenta,
which could cause problems, but this
was not identified before the birth.
At birth, the baby presented with hypoxic

ischaemic encephalopathy, he said.

Evidence would be given about attempts
to telephone Dr Antonas and to fax him
updates on the baby's condition.
Mr Griffin referred to competing evidence
about whether those results indicated an
urgent need for delivery to occur.
Mr Key told the inquest there had been
some concern about staff not being
able to contact Dr Antonas but no-one
suggested getting another obstetrician.
He did not remember being told that Dr
Antonas was at another hospital doing
an emergency caesarean.
Later that evening, Dr Antonas also
delivered George by an emergency
caesarean.
Mr Key said his son was blue-grey in
colour and had a large indentation on
the side of his head.
The inquest, which will hear from
various medical witnesses including
Dr Antonas, is continuing.

Marriage fraud
Some people think marriage to a
Canadian citizen will be their ticket to
Canada.
It is a crime for a foreign national to
marry a Canadian citizen or permanent
resident only to gain entry to Canada.
CIC is working to prevent these false
marriages.
In many cases, sponsors and foreign
applicants set up a marriage of
convenience. This is a marriage or
common-law relationship whose sole

purpose is to let the sponsored spouse

or partner immigrate to Canada.
CIC officers are trained to recognize
real immigration applications. They
know how to detect false marriages.
They have many ways to spot marriage
fraud, including:
document checks,
visits to peoples homes and
interviews with both sponsors and
applicants.
Canadian citizens or permanent
residents who are in a marriage of
convenience for immigration reasons
may be charged with a crime.
New regulations
Were you sponsored to come to Canada
as a spouse or partner on or after
October 25, 2012? If so, you must now
live with your sponsor in a genuine
relationship for two years from the day
you get permanent residence status in
Canada. This is a new rule.
As a spouse or partner being sponsored,
this applies to you if:
you have been in a relationship
with your sponsor for two years or

university.
C. Get a job in the federal government.
D. Vote in the federal and provincial
election.
9) What do you call the Queen's

D. Member of the Legislative
Assembly.
10) If you cannot pay for a lawyer, how
can you get legal help?
A. Do not go to a court.
B. Borrow money from the government
and pay for the lawyer.
C. Apply for financial aid from the
government to pay for legal fees.

2014 Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento didn't take long to
become the Korean car company's
most popular crossover vehicle--and
it hasn't taken long for it to go a very
thorough reworking that refines the
basic package that emerged in the 2011
model year.
For 2014, the Sorento gets some
significant upgrades under the hood
and under its floorpan, not to mention
a new interior and new safety and
infotainment features. It's no minor
refresh: Kia says that more than 80
percent of the parts in the new Sorento
are either all-new or significantly
redesigned.
The interior of the Sorento grows
incrementally, with slightly more
leg room and good seats, now with
heating offered on the first two rows
and ventilation available up front. We
like the Sorento as a five-seater, where
it has plenty of legroom and headroom
for adults, front and back, yet leaves
plenty of cargo space when the back
two rows of seats are folded down on
three-row versions. There's not much
room behind the third-row seat when
it's used for passengers, though.
The most meaningful difference for
many families may very well be the
introduction of a more fuel-efficient
V-6. The all-aluminum 3.3-liter GDI
V-6 makes 290 horsepower and 252
pound-feet of torque. A 191-hp,
2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder engine is
standard, but likely to be rare--and
rightly so, since the V-6 almost matches
it on gas mileage, and far outpoints it
in pure power. The Sorento delivers
its power to the road with the help
of a well-sorted six-speed automatic
transmission; it's either configured with
front-wheel drive or with an enhanced
torque-vectoring version of the allwheel-drive system.
Other key upgrades help the Sorento
ride less stiffly and steer more swiftly.
The Sorentos hydraulic power steering
system has been swapped out for an
electric system, and on the Sorento SX
it's driver-adjustable through a range
of three modes (Comfort, Normal, and
Sport), to nominal effect. Ride and
handling have been improved through
a more rigid body structure plus the
addition of a front strut-tower brace and
a new independent front suspension
with an H-shaped sub-frame cradle;
new bushings have been added to the
multi-link rear suspension. It's much
calmer, and more capable of rounding
off pavement burrs than before, though
it's still a slightly firm setup compared
to the gooey ride of a Highlander.
You might not know the Sorento's been
so heavily reworked by looking at the
exterior. The 2014 Sorento is a clear
continuation of the design in place since
2011but with some fresh details that
crossover shoppers are going to be able
to pick out. New front and rear fascias
and low body work both serve to make
the Sorento look a bit lower and wider,
while the tiger-nose grille gets either
an anodized metal or black mesh look,

with a cross-hatched pattern in the

lower valance. Kia has also added LED
combination taillamps and redesign has
also added LED combination taillamps
and redesigned wheels. Inside, the
Sorento gets a new instrument panel,
while EX trims and above get a new
reconfigurable seven-inch TFT LCD
gauge cluster.
All versions get standard Bluetooth,
satellite radio, and power features; a
panoramic sunroof is a new option.
The top Sorento SX Limited adds
some of the top-lux features gained
by the Optima SX this past year; it
includes Nappa leather upholstery,
heated rear seats, and a wood-trimmed
heated steering wheel, plus a softtouch headliner. On the outside its
distinguished by its HID headlamps,
red-painted brake calipers and special
19-inch chrome wheels.
The rest of the Sorento line gets an
expanded feature set for 2014, and
especially of note is that infotainment
has been upgraded, with a large new

eight-inch touch screen that combines

navigation, real-time traffic, Infinity
premium audio, Bluetooth, and nextgeneration UVO eServices features
that ditch Microsoft's kludgy software
for smartphone-driven access to
Google maps--for free. A 115-volt
power inverter, second-row sliding
sunshades, a panoramic sunroof, and
dual-ventilated air-cooled front seats
are among the other new features for
2014.
Change comes from inside: the 2014
Kia Sorento's classy new cabin proves
that talk-show talking point rather
succinctly. It's the obvious shift in
the new Sorento, much more so than
the sheetmetal, which looks about the
same as last year's model.
The Sorento cuts a more rugged profile
than most of the crossovers of its size.
The SUV flavor isn't as faint as it is on
a Highlander, or even a Santa Fe, or as
overplayed as it is on the Honda Pilot.
It's simply drawn, minimally detailed,
and only mildly altered this year, with

new front and rear ends and some

trim at the sills to give it a little more
mass. The taillamps are LED-lit now,
of course, and the grille is either bright
like metal, or a more intense black
mesh on the Sorento SX.
Kia's designers saved their energy
instead for the cabin. It's relieved
of most of the inexpensive-looking
plastics that worked well enough for
the past few years, and covered in
finer, soft-touch materials, polished
off with thin, spare metallic trim.
The center stack's been reshaped to
fit a bigger LCD screen for models
equipped with navigation, and the
gauges are recast so that an LCD
screen will fit there, too, at least
on more expensive models. The
woodgrain trim still comes down
on the inauthentic side--as does
some of the real wood we've seen on
other crossovers lately--but there's a
substantial feel to the cabin now that
matches the Sorento's silent creep in
price over the past few years.

Girl Caught In Cruiser With

Cops Was Drunk And Underage,
Investigation Reveals

An investigation into two Montreal

cops caught on camera with two young
women in a police cruiser has revealed
one of the girls was just 17 years old.
While the cops will face disciplinary
action, the Montreal Police Service
insists nothing illegal happened.
A photo snapped last month by Leila
Saad shows a uniformed officer
sitting in the driver's seat of a police
cruiser with a topless blond woman
on his lap.
A separate video clip shows two
officers standing near a cruiser with
a blond woman and a dark-haired
woman.
Saad told QMI Agency at the time that
she saw two officers in the cruiser, one
in the backseat, each having sex with
a woman.

While the age of consent in Canada is

16, it becomes 18 if the older person is
in a position of authority.
"You're talking about a uniformed
police officer in a patrol car. You can't
get a better description of what it means
to be in a position of authority," lawyer
Celina Saint-Francois said.
According a police, the young woman
said she was drunk and the officer let
her press up against him.
Police spokesman Ian Lafreniere said
an investigation which was based
largely on statements from the two
young women and the two cops
found no evidence of criminal activity.
"Right now, with the witnesses we have,
the witnesses who were involved, with
the video evidence we have, there's
nothing criminal," Lafreniere said.

Border Agency To Keep Your

Data For 15 Years, Not 75

The federal border agency is bowing

to privacy concerns by agreeing to
slash the amount of time it will keep
data on the cross-border movements
of Canadians as part of a new security
plan.
The Canada Border Services Agency
says it plans to retain personal
details gleaned from the CanadaU.S. initiative for 15 years -- not 75
-- following pressure from the federal
privacy watchdog.
The
tracking
system
involves
exchanging entry information collected
from people at the land border -- so
that data on entry to one country would
serve as a record of exit from the other.
The federal government plans to use
the data for purposes ranging from
catching unemployment insurance
cheats to ensuring people ineligible to
stay in Canada have left the country.
The first two phases of the program
were limited to foreign nationals and
permanent residents of Canada and the
United States, but not citizens of either
country.
The program was to be expanded
next Monday to include information
sharing on all travellers. in addition,
Canada hoped to begin collecting
information on people exiting by air
-- something the United States already
does -- by requiring airlines to submit
passenger manifest data for outbound
international flights.
The government says the airline data
could help identify sex offenders
planning to travel abroad or extremists
off to join foreign conflicts such as
the one raging in Syria, where young
Canadians have already been killed.
The government's June 30 deadline for
those elements will be missed because
legislative and regulatory changes still
need to be made, federal and industry
officials say.
The entry-exit initiative is a key
element of the highly touted perimeter
security deal intended to help ease
the passage of travellers and cargo
across the Canada-U.S. border while
bolstering continental security.
Preliminary results of the second phase
of the initiative, which began early
last summer, demonstrate the program
"is working as intended," say border
agency briefing materials obtained by
The Canadian Press under the Access
to Information Act.
For the period June 30 to Sept. 30,

2013, 1.29 million entry records

were received from the United States
and Canada sent 1.34 million to the
Americans.
A comparison of the data against the
databases of Canada's border agency
revealed that 20 people subject
to active immigration warrants or
removal orders had left Canada, say
the materials prepared last November.
At last count, that led to four warrants
being cancelled.
The privacy commissioner's office had
expressed concern about plans to keep
information for 75 years and asked the
border agency to review the "lengthy
retention period."
For future phases, Canada will keep
personal information on all travellers
for 15 years in "personalized" form
and for another 15 years stripped of
personal details, for a total of 30 years,
the briefing notes say.
However, the U.S. has indicated it
plans to keep information collected
under the program for anywhere from
15 to 75 years -- or possibly longer -depending on the circumstances.
The Canadian border agency sent a
letter to the acting chief privacy officer
of the U.S. Department of Homeland
Security recommending signs be
posted at U.S. land border crossings -as Canada had done on its side of the
border -- informing travellers of the
data collection.
Homeland Security did not respond to
questions about the next phase of the
project.
The Canada Border Services Agency
confirmed that "legislative and
regulatory changes are required" before
the full exchange of data on Canadian
and American travellers takes place.
Additional information on the proposed
changes will be provided "when
legislation is tabled," border agency
spokeswoman Patrizia Giolti said in an
email response to questions.
It is difficult to gauge the usefulness
of the cross-border information
exchanges or to know if the privacy
protections will prove adequate, said
Christopher Sands, a senior fellow
at the Washington-based Hudson
Institute, an independent research
organization.
"We haven't really got any evidence
one way or the other about how this
data is being used and whether there's
any sort of problem."

Michael Ignatieff Returns To Harvard Full Time

Next time Michael Ignatieff comes to

Canada he'll just be visiting.
The former Liberal leader has left his
part-time duties at the Munk School
of Global Affairs at the University of
Toronto to return full time to Harvard.
Ignatieff was named to the Edward R.
Murrow Chair of Press, Politics and
Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy
School on Tuesday.

His appointment starts on Canada Day

and the author, scholar and journalist
will serve as a faculty affiliate at
Harvard's Shorenstein Center.
Harvard is where Ignatieff was
convinced to step away from the
lectern and return to Canada and a shot
at becoming prime minister.
He did and the rest is history.
He won a Toronto seat in 2006 and

27

later that year mounted a run at the

party's leadership, but lost to Quebecer
Stephane Dion.
Dion led the Liberals in the 2008
election, but lost to the Conservatives.
Ignatieff was handed the reins in 2008
and steered the Liberals in the 2011
election. A Conservative "just visiting"
advertising campaign relentlessly
mocked him for spending much of his

adult life away from Canada.

The Liberals suffered their worst electoral
defeat under Ignatieff, winning 34 seats
and handing Stephen Harper a majority
and propelling the NDP to official
Opposition status for the first time.
Ignatieff, 67, also lost his own seat in
the thrashing.
He has been splitting his time between
Harvard and U of T since then.

Man Charged With Attempted

Abduction In Surrey

A man is accused of trying to abduct a

child in Surrey over the weekend.
It happened at Holland Park last
Saturday afternoon.
The father of the four-year-old girl
called police after he noticed a man
approaching his daughter. Mounties
say the father insisted the man leave
the park.
But the man apparently returned a
few minutes later, after changing his
clothes, and began to shout at the father
and daughter. Thats when the dad
called police.
Mounties say when officers arrived,

the man tried to take off on a bike. He

was arrested a few blocks away.
The girl wasnt hurt.
The father in this case did the right
thing, he was keeping an eye on his
child in the park, intervened when he
was suspicious of an issue and when
the situation became elevated he called
police, says RCMP Sergeant Dale
Carr.
Adam Beedle, 32, has been charged
three counts, including attempted
abduction of a person under 14 and
uttering a threat. Hes still in police
custody.

One of two bears that broke into a West

Vancouver garage to get the food in a
freezer has been shot, after it returned
while workers were replacing the
broken door.
West Vancouver Police were first
called to the 200-block of Onslow
Place in the British Properties Tuesday
morning, after two bears broke through
the side door to the garage, pried open
a chest freezer and began feeding.
Police used air horns to frighten the
bears back into a nearby wooded area
near the Capilano Golf Club and a B.C.
Conservation Officer was called in to
trap the bears for relocation.
Later on, while some workers were
installing a temporary cover on the
damaged doorway, one of the bears

returned to the property and was shot and

killed by the conservation officer. It was
estimated to be about four years old.
The other bear has not been seen since
it was chased away.
Officials are urging all residents to
ensure their properties are free of
attractants to bears, for the safety of
both humans and bears.
"Storing food in garages or outbuildings
should be avoided if odours from the
food can escape the enclosure and if
doors to any enclosure are not strong
enough to be bear resistant," said a
statement issued by police.
"The door in this occurrence was a light
duty hollow core door more commonly
used for interior rooms and appeared to
have been readily broken through."

Edmonton police say they are changing the way

they handle non-emergency calls so dispatchers
can be freed up to assist in real emergencies.
Calls to the non-emergency number will be
handled by an interactive voice response
(IVR) system. People who call 911 are now
getting an estimated time of arrival.Last
year we had over 500,000 calls into our
non-emergency number, of which 50 per
cent were information only calls where
police response was not required, said
Insp. Erik Johnson.
So were really hoping that this new
system is going to assist us in ...getting to
those calls that are emergencies.
Edmonton 911 is answered by dispatchers
who determine whether the calls are for
police, fire or ambulance. Police calls get
sent to evaluators.
Dispatchers will transfer all nonemergency calls to 911 to the IVR system.
IVR will automatically handle calls made
to the non-emergency number, 780-4234567 or #377 on cell phones
The changes were announced on
Wednesday, one day after a Mill Woods
fitness trainer said that police had addressed
her complaints about the 911 system.

Last year, Cheryl Schneider was leading an

early morning fitness class when she said
two drunken men showed up outside her
studio at the North Millbourne Community
Hall banging on the door to get in.
Worried, Schneider called 911 but no one
showed up to help her until 40 minutes later.
"I was angry, she recalled, adding that she
was very disappointed in the response time
and how her call for help was handled.
Schneider said she had to speak with three
different dispatchers during her original
call, and had to repeat her description of
what was happening to each in turn.
Then, she said she was given a runaround
about when to expect the police. The whole
experience left her shaken.
"How could we let Edmonton get to a place
where we can't trust EPS?" she asked.
However, Schneider said she has been
working with EPS officers for the past year
to help resolve some of the problems she
experienced last year.
Johnson said the changes have been in the
works for the past two years, though he
acknowledged police acted on Schneiders
suggestion to change the language used by
dispatcher to prioritize calls.

Calgary Man Who Left Threatening Voice Mail For Prime Minister
Earns Jail Time

Leaving Prime Minister Stephen Harper

a threatening voice mail which
included a return name and number
has landed a Calgary resident the
equivalent of a six-month jail term.
And Daniel Evans was also placed on
probation for a year Wednesday, after
pleading guilty to a March 12 charge of
uttering threats.
Crown prosecutor Steve Johnston told
provincial court Judge Joanne Durant
that Evans left the threatening message
on Harpers constituency office phone.
In it, a drunken Evans asks in often
vulgar language to have Harper call
him back.
If you can get the d--- weed to phone

me Id like to tell him Ill straighten

our government out, Johnston quoted
from a transcript of Evans call.
You guys suck, Evans said.
Im not a voting P.C. no more.
But after expressing his political
displeasure, Evans became threatening,
Johnston told Durant.

Prosecutors Pushing For 10-Year

Sentence For Toronto Man Who
Tried Leave Canada To Join
Brutal Terrorists

Federal prosecutors are seeking a

10-year sentence for a Toronto man
convicted of attempting to join the
Al-Shabab, the Somali terrorist group
behind last years massacre at a Nairobi
shopping mall.
People should know that even if they
try to join a foreign terrorist group and
are unsuccessful, they will be heavily
punished for the attempt, Crown lawyer
Jim Clark told the Ontario Superior
Court of Justice on Wednesday.
Calling Al-Shabab a brutal terrorist
group, Mr. Clark said Mohamed Hersi
had quit his job, friended a Canadian
Al-Shabab member on Facebook and
set up an alibi before he was arrested
at Torontos Pearson airport in March
2011.
He had also tried to ensure that his
plans went undetected by counterterrorism authorities so that he would
be able to return to Canada to commit
terrorist acts, he said. And that in my
submission is a chilling prospect.
A 28-year-old Toronto security guard,
Hersi is the first Canadian convicted
of attempting to join a foreign terrorist
group. A jury found him guilty of two
terrorism-related counts after hearing
evidence of his intention to join AlShabab.
He was also convicted of counselling
another person to join Al-Shabab. The
charge stemmed from detailed advice
he gave an undercover Toronto police
officer playing the role of a SomaliCanadian.
As sentencing arguments got underway
on Wednesday, Mr. Clark said Hersi
had taken the officer under his wing
and that it was lucky he was not an
impressionable youth. Ten years is

completely appropriate to reflect Mr.

Hersis overall culpability.
While Hersi claimed he was simply
on his way to Cairo to study Arabic,
prosecutors argued his final destination
was Somalia, where he was intent on
joining two of his high school friends
in Al-Shabab.
Testifying in his defence, Hersi
denied he was an extremist and said
he did not support Al-Shabab. His
defence lawyer, Paul Slansky, argued
unsuccessfully last week that Hersi had
been entrapped.
The sentencing comes as Canadian
authorities are struggling to deal with
dozens of young extremists who have
been making their way to places like
Syria to fight. At least seven have died
in Syria, Iraq and Algeria since January
2013, amid fears those that survive
could return to Canada to spread
terrorism.

Mohamed Hersi leaves Brampton

court May 30.

Harper, he said, of the assassinated

U.S. president.
Evans then reiterated his wish to speak
to Harper directly.
If he doesnt ... answer me and
straighten up his act Im gonna put a
bullet through the prime ministers
head, he said.
And he concluded with a message that
at least someone should call him back.
If you want the Prime Minister safe,
you phone me, Evans said.
Otherwise if you dont Im gonna
eliminate him. Bye.
With enhanced credit for time in remand,
Johnston said the offender had served
the equivalent of a six-month sentence,

which is the term he would have sought.

A condition of Evans probation is
that he have no contact with the prime
minister, or anyone in Harpers family.
That prompted Durant to warn him if
he should find himself in the nations
capital, he should stay away from 24
Sussex Dr.
Evans only concern was whether hed
still be able to vote.
Yes, the judge told him,
Hes also to seek counselling for
alcohol addiction, she said.
Defence counsel Gloria Froese, who
agreed her client had already served
enough time, said Evans has some
mental health issues as well.

Stanley Park Coyote Feeding

Raises Concerns
Officials say feeding the wild animal could eventually lead to it being shot

The Stanley Park Ecology Society is

warning people not to feed "a very
comfortable coyote" that has been
spotted hanging out during the day near
the Beach Avenue entrance of the park.
While the coyote has not shown any
aggression to people yet, officials are
concerned people spotted feeding it
will lead it to quickly adapt to other
human food sources such as garbage,
compost and even small pets.
It is crucial that this coyote find its
own food for its own health and safety
and the safety of people and their pets,
says Dan Straker, the urban wildlife
programs coordinator with the society.
Straker warns while people might think
it is fun to feed the wild animal, it does
the animals no good, and can lead to
them getting shot if they lose their fear
of humans.
"You are training an animal to stop
hunting for its own food, which is
actually the more nutritious food. You
are making them addicted to a food
that they start to rely on. When they get

grumpy and don't get that food they can

become aggressive towards people."
"People really need to start thinking of it
as animal abuse when they see someone
feeding because it is essentially animal
abuse. You are basically causing that
animal to be destroyed by government
because of the aggressive actions it
might take."
Anyone spotting a coyote is advised to
try to scare it off by yelling and waving
their arms overhead.
There is no shortage of food for the
animals in the city, where small rodents
make up three quarters of their diet,
said Straker.
Since they were first spotted in
Vancouver in 1987, coyotes have
become common across Metro
Vancouver, particularly on golf courses
and in parks.
In 2012 Straker estimated there were
about 2,000 coyotes in the Lower
Mainland with up to 300 living in
Vancouver alone and about five or six
in Stanley Park.

How To Deal With Misbehaving

Kids

Recently, I was at dinner with two

other families. Another guests nineyear-old son, Sean, was provoking his
12-year-old sister, Madeline, taunting
her, getting in her space. The sister
responded with a screechy I HATE
YOU!!
What ensued was painful to watch, but
highly predictable.
The kids dad, clearly embarrassed
by their behavior, says, Both of you,
knock it off, right now!
Madeline: But I didnt DO anything.
Dad: Its not okay to yell I hate you
to your brother.
Madeline, half screaming, half
whining: He was BUGGING me!
Dad: If you guys cant get along, we
are going to go home. I mean it. This
behavior is unacceptable.
Dad turns back to the rest of the adults
and rolls his eyes. We chuckle a little.
Weve all been there.
It seems harmless to put a big consequence
out there, like threatening to leave a party
the kids are enjoying. Odds are, theyll
shape up so they can stay.
But not two minutes later, the brother
is at it again, steering his scooter too
close to his sister and her friend. GO
AWAY! Youre such an IDIOT! she
screams with emotion that only comes
when someone is pushing your buttons.
Dad assesses the situation; the host is
starting to serve dinner. There is no
way he is going to make good on his
threat to leave right now. What should
he do?
We all make empty threats sometimes,
especially in the heat of the moment,
hoping to coerce better behavior out of
our kids. But there are several problems
with threatening to do something and
then not following through on it.
Most obviously, empty threats weaken
our influence. Kids are smart; once
they know that we are unlikely to
follow-through on a threatened
consequence, our words have much
less meaning. This is especially true in
certain situations, like being in public
or at a party, where kids know its more
likely that we parents WONT follow
through. So they learn to not pay much
attention to those threats at all.
This means that we, the parents, arent
fully in chargeand, consciously or
unconsciously, this makes our children
insecure. Kids need someone who has
been around the block a few times to
be in charge. They need structure and
rulesor they start to feel insecure.
But there may be an even bigger
problem: It lacks integrity when we say
we are going to do something hard, then
dont do it. Our children will behave
like we do, especially as they grow into
teenagers and adults. When they face
a challenge, do we want them to tell
everyone that they are going to do the

hard thing, then pretend like they never

said they would do it? Of course not,
but we can only expect them to have as
much integrity (and commitment, and
courage) as we have.
Fortunately, there are much more
effective ways to deal with our
childrens undesirable behavior. Heres
a step-by-step plan.
1. Make a list of the privileges your
kids enjoy regularly, and would miss
if they lost. These could be TV time,
dessert, lessons or athletic practices,
rides to school when they can take the
bus instead, etc.
2. Pick something that you can easily
enforceone standard, predictable
consequence. Perhaps your pre-teen
daughter is glued to her phone, or your
son particularly loves watching sports
on TV, or you already have a time-out
routine that is working.
3. Decide what battles you are going
to fight. Kids benefit from having a
bright line painted for them. What
is always off-limits? For example, in
our house, calling other people names,
saying you hate someone, intentionally
making someone unhappy or angry,
hitting, talking-back, and cheating at
UNO are always against the rules.
4. Have a family meeting to talk about
this. Tell your kids that you are making
a concerted effort to say what you
mean, and mean what you say. Give
them permission to hold you to it. My
kids throw a pretend flag in the air like
a football ref and say E-flag! (E is for
empty threat) if I say something they
suspect I wont follow through on.
5. In the family meeting, review
your family rules. Tell them what
violations you are going to enforce,
and exactly how you are going to
enforce them.
6. Heres how to enforce those rules.
When kids misbehave, issue one
warning by saying, This is your
warning, in a calm voice. (Kids benefit
from a warning, because it gives them
a chance to self-correct. This will
help foster their self-discipline, so
eventually they dont need you at all.)
Then, if they cross the line again, they
lose the pre-decided privilegewhich
you can let them know as calmly as
possible, such as by saying, Please
bring me your phone, or, Im sorry,

31

Coloring

you wont be having dessert tonight.

Or calmly pick your toddler up and put
her in time-out.
This is key: you dont need to explain
what they did wrong, even if they act
like they have no idea what they are
doing wrong. If kids can learn the
rules to Candyland, they can learn your
family rules. Kids know when they are
misbehaving; dont let them fool you.
If they really arent sure what they did,

theyll figure it out fast if they know

they are about to lose a privilege.
7. Be very, very consistent. As
consistent as humanly possible. Most
kids will seriously test you for at least a
week, some longer. Stick to your guns.
Imagine you are refereeing a televised
soccer match: The rules are clear.
Your job is clear. You cant overlook
violations mid-game and expect the
players to still consider you the ref.

Melanoma Deaths Linked To Cancers That Look Like Pimples,

Dermatologists Say

Dermatologists say new research shows

almost half of all melanoma deaths are
from lumps that look like innocent
pimples, rather than skin cancer.
Australia has the highest rate of melanoma
in the world and dermatologists say the
lesions, which do not present as typical
skin cancers, grow at four times the rate
of other melanomas.
The research published in the
Australasian Journal of Dermatology
found dermatologists were more
accurate in identifying types of cancers
than non-dermatologists.
Associate Professor John Kelly from
the Victorian Melanoma Service says

many doctors are dismissing the lumps,

which are round and red or brown but
which are in fact melanomas.
The most common melanomas look
like an ugly mole and change in shape
and colour.
Associate Professor Kelly said to
bring down the death rate, doctors and
patients need to be more aware of the
spots, which grow quickly and can be
easily mistaken for moles or pimples.
He said the nodular melanomas
account for 15 per cent of melanomas,
but almost 50 per cent of deaths.
"Lack of pigmentation is a key reason
for failure to recognise these unusual

presentations as melanoma," he said.

He says another reason for the high
death rate is that the spots tend to grow
very rapidly.
"Nodular melanoma grows in depth at
four times the rate of other melanomas,"
he said.
One of the important features of these
spots is that they change at a rate which
is detectable over months.
"If we are to succeed in further reducing
rates of death from melanoma, we
must promote awareness amongst
health care practitioners of this unusual
presentation," Associate Professor
Kelly said.

In 2014, about 14,240 Australians

- 8,540 men and 5,700 women are expected to be diagnosed with
melanoma of the skin.
Melanoma is the least common type
of skin cancer, but the fourth most
common cancer in Australia.
It is the most dangerous form of skin
cancer and is the seventh most common
cause of cancer death in Australia.
People with fair skin are also at higher
risk and the risk of melanoma increases
with age.
In 2020, an estimated 17,570
Australians are expected to be
diagnosed with melanomas of the skin.

Processed Red Meat Raises Heart Failure Risk In Men

Love ham or salami for your breakfast
daily? Better cut down the intake for
the health of your heart.
An alarming research indicates that
men who regularly eat moderate
amounts of processed red meat such as
cold cuts (ham/salami), sausage, bacon
and hot dogs are at higher risk of heart
failure and death.
Processed meats are preserved by
smoking, curing, salting or adding
preservatives.
"Processed red meat commonly contains
sodium, nitrates, phosphates and other
food additives, and smoked and grilled
meats also contain polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons, all of which may
contribute to the increased heart failure
risk," claimed Alicja Wolk, a professor
from the Institute of Environmental
Medicine at Karolinska Institutet in
Stockholm, Sweden.
Unprocessed meat is free from food
additives and usually has a lower
amount of sodium, Wolk added.
"To reduce your risk of heart failure
and other cardiovascular diseases, we
suggest to avoid processed red meat
and limit the amount of unprocessed
red meat to one to two servings per
week or less," explained Joanna
Kaluza, an assistant professor at
Warsaw University of Life Sciences in

Poland.
"Eat a diet rich in fruit, vegetables,
whole grain products, nuts and increase
your servings of fish," Kaluza added.
To reach this conclusion, researchers
analysed a cohort of Swedish Men
study that included 37,035 men 4579 years old with no history of heart
failure.
Participants completed a questionnaire
on food intake and other lifestyle
factors in 1998.
After almost 12 years of follow-up,
researchers found that heart failure was
diagnosed in 2,891 men and 266 died
from heart failure.
Men who ate the most processed red
meat (75 grams per day or more) had
a 28 percent higher risk of heart failure
compared to men who ate the least (25
grams per day or less) after adjusting
for multiple lifestyle variables.
Men who ate the most processed
red meat had more than a two-fold
increased risk of death from heart
failure compared to men in the lowest
category.
For each 50 gram (1-2 slices of ham)
increase in daily consumption of
processed meat, the risk of heart failure
incidence increased by eight percent
and the risk of death from heart failure
by 38 percent, researchers noted.

The risk of heart failure or death among

those who ate unprocessed red meat
did not increase.
Researchers said they expect to find
similar associations in a current study
conducted with women.
"For people who eat meat, choose lean

meats and poultry without skin and eat

fish at least twice a week - preferably
fish high in omega-3 fatty acids such as
salmon, trout and herring," researchers
concluded in an American Heart
Association journal Circulation: Heart
Failure.

diets higher in protein, especially from

fish, may be less likely to have a stroke
than those with diets lower in protein.
"The amount of protein that led to the
reduced risk was moderate-equal to 20
grams per day," study author Xinfeng
Liu, MD, PhD, of Nanjing University
School of Medicine in Nanjing, China
said.
"Additional, larger studies are needed
before definitive recommendations
can be made, but the evidence is
compelling," Liu said.
The meta-analysis looked at all of the
available research on the relationship
between protein in the diet and the
risk of stroke. Seven studies with a
total of 254,489 participants who were

were included in the analysis.

Overall, the participants with the
highest amount of protein in their diets
were 20 percent less likely to develop
a stroke than those with the lowest
amount of protein in their diets.
The results accounted for other factors
that could affect the risk of stroke, such
as smoking and high cholesterol.
For every additional 20 grams per day
of protein that people ate, their risk of
stroke decreased by 26 percent.
"If everyone's protein intake were
at this level, that would translate to
more than 1.4 million fewer deaths
from stroke each year worldwide, plus
a decreased level of disability from
stroke," Liu said.

Researchers have now discovered that

white bread might not be bad at all, as
it helps the growth of beneficial gut
bacteria, the deficiency of which makes
one vulnerable to diseases.
Sonia Gonzalez and colleagues noted
that the bacteria in our guts, or our
microbiome, play an important role in
our health, and one of the most effective
ways to maintain a good balance of the
microbes living in our guts is through
our diets.
To figure out what dietary ingredients

promote helpful bacteria, Gonzalez's

team asked 38 healthy adults questions
about their diets and figured out which
bacteria were present in the participants'
stool samples. Their analysis revealed
that pectin, a compound in citrus fruits,
lowers the levels of some helpful bacteria.
The researchers suggest that pectin
interacts with other substances in oranges,
leading to this unexpected effect. Their
most novel finding, they said, was that
white bread boosted Lactobacillus, a
group of beneficial bacteria.

Prostate Cancer
What is prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer starts in the cells of the
prostate. The prostate is part of a mans
reproductive system. Its main function
is to make part of the liquid (seminal
fluid) that mixes with sperm from the
testicles to make semen. Semen is
ejaculated during sex.
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland
just below the bladder and in front of
the rectum. It surrounds part of the
urethra, the tube that carries urine and
semen through the penis.
Prostate cancer is the most common
cancer in Canadian men. It usually
grows slowly and can often be cured or
managed successfully.
Risk factors for prostate cancer
Any substance or condition that
increases cancer risk is referred to as a
risk factor. There isnt a known, single
cause of prostate cancer. Most cancers
are the result of many risk factors.
However, some people with prostate
cancer do not have any identifiable risk
factors.
*Risk factors are generally listed
in order from most significant to
least significant. In most cases, it
is impossible to rank the relative
significance of individual risk factors
with absolute certainty.
The risk of prostate cancer increases
as men grow older. Prostate cancer
is not very common in men under 50
years of age. The chance of having
prostate cancer increases after 50 and
is diagnosed most often in men over
the age of 65.
Men of African ancestry have a higher
risk of developing prostate cancer.
They have about a 60% higher rate of
prostate cancer than Caucasian men.
Men of African ancestry are more
likely to be diagnosed at a younger
age and with more aggressive and
advanced tumours.
Men of Asian ancestry have lower
rates of prostate cancer. The reason for
these ethnic differences is not clear.
The following factor is known to
increase the risk of developing prostate
cancer.
Family history
The risk of developing prostate cancer
is higher if a first-degree relative
(such as a father or brother) has been
diagnosed with the disease. Men are at
the highest risk if more than 1 relative
has been diagnosed. The more firstdegree relatives with prostate cancer
a man has, the greater his risk of
developing prostate cancer.
Risk is also influenced by the relatives
age at diagnosis. If a mans relative was
diagnosed with prostate cancer before
the age of 65, his chance of developing
prostate cancer is higher than if his
relative was diagnosed at an older age.

Possible risk factors

The following factors have some
association with prostate cancer, but
there is not enough evidence to say
they are known risk factors. Further
study is needed to clarify the role of
these factors for prostate cancer.
diets high in fat A diet high in fat,
especially animal fat, may increase
the risk of prostate cancer. Milk and
dairy products contain animal fat.
Some studies have suggested that
men who eat large amounts of dairy
products may have a slightly higher
risk for prostate cancer. More studies
are needed to determine how a high-fat
diet or eating a lot of dairy products
affects prostate cancer risk.
-diets high in red or processed meats
Some studies have shown that red
meat, especially when it is cooked at
high temperatures, and processed meat
may increase the risk of developing
prostate cancer. White meat intake did
not increase prostate cancer risk.
-diets high in milk and dairy products
Milk and dairy products contain
animal fat, which may increase the risk
of prostate cancer. Some studies have
also suggested that men who eat larger
amounts of dairy products may have a
increased risk for prostate cancer. Milk
is a good source of calcium, and some
studies have suggested that a high
calcium intake may increase the risk of
developing prostate cancer.
-inherited gene mutations Studies
have found that some inherited gene
mutations may increase the chance of
developing prostate cancer. However,
cancers associated with these gene
mutations account for only a very
small number of cases of prostate
cancer. Men who inherit mutations of
the BRCA genes may have a higher
risk of developing prostate cancer.
These genes also increase a womans
risk of developing breast or ovarian
cancer. Researchers are also studying
other gene mutations that may affect
the risk of developing prostate cancer.
-inflammation
of
the
prostate
(prostatitis) Many studies have
shown that long-term inflammation of
the prostate gland (prostatitis) increases
the risk of developing prostate cancer.
It also increases the rate at which
prostate cancer grows and spreads.
-circulating (endogenous) testosterone
Long-term exposure to higher levels
of testosterone and its metabolite
dihydrotestosterone
(DHT)
may
increase the chance of developing
prostate cancer.
Testosterone is the main male hormone
(androgen) responsible for the growth
and functioning of the prostate gland.
The actual role of testosterone in the
development of prostate cancer is

complex.
Some
evidence
suggests
that
androgens are related to the growth
and development of prostate cancer.
Hormonal therapy that blocks the
bodys production of these hormones
is one of the treatments for prostate
cancer.
-exposure to pesticides Studies have
suggested that farmers and workers
who spray pesticides have a slightly
higher risk of developing prostate
cancer. The risk may be higher for
men with a family history of prostate
cancer. It is not known which specific
chemicals may be responsible for
this increased risk. Pesticides have a
large number of different chemicals,
only some of which may be related to
prostate cancer.
-occupational exposures Some
evidence suggests that occupational
exposure to some chemicals may
increase the risk for prostate cancer.
-cadmium exposure Cadmium is
a metallic element known to cause
cancer. Some studies have shown that
men exposed to cadmium in smelting
or battery manufacturing industries
had a higher risk of developing prostate
cancer. Further research is needed to
determine how cadmium exposure
affects prostate cancer risk.
-rubber manufacturing There is
some evidence that workers in the
rubber manufacturing industry have an
increased risk of developing prostate
cancer.
Factors not associated with prostate
cancer
The following are not considered to be
risk factors for prostate cancer because
there is enough evidence showing that
there is no association:
-benign prostate hyperplasia
-vasectomy
-frequency of sexual activity and
ejaculation
-alcohol
Unknown risk factors
The following are factors for which
there is not enough evidence or the
evidence is inconclusive. In other
words, it cant be determined for sure
whether these risk factors are or are not
associated with prostate cancer.
-testosterone therapy (exogenous)
Men who take testosterone as a
therapy and who have high levels of
testosterone in their blood do not seem
to have a higher risk of developing
prostate cancer.
-Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
Some studies have shown that men
with a history of sexually transmitted
infections (STIs) may be at higher risk
of developing prostate cancer.
Evidence supporting this association
has not been consistent and, to date, no

specific infectious agent that increases

the risk has been identified.
Further research is needed to
understand the role that STIs may play
in prostate cancer development.
-obesity
Some studies have shown that obesity
(a body mass index of 30 or more) may
increase the risk of prostate cancer.
Other studies did not have the same
findings. It is not clear whether there
is an association between obesity and
prostate cancer risk.
Further study is needed to understand
the complex role of obesity in prostate
cancer development.
-lack of physical activity
Research looking for a connection
between physical activity and the
risk of prostate cancer has not been
consistent.
More studies are needed to find out if
men who are not very physically active
have an increased risk for prostate
cancer or if men who are physically
active have a decreased risk.
-sedentary behaviour
Sitting for long periods of time
(sedentary behaviour) has been linked
to an increased risk for prostate
cancer. The evidence around sedentary
behaviour on cancer risk is new and
still emerging and further study is
needed to clarify its role in prostate
cancer development.
-low levels of dietary nutrients
Some studies have suggested that men
with low levels of dietary nutrients,
such as vitamin D, vitamin E or
selenium, may have higher rates of
prostate cancer. However, the results of
other studies have not been conclusive.
Studies have shown that taking
supplements of these nutrients do not
reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
More research is also needed to
determine what role supplements play
and if they reduce prostate cancer risk.
Men should talk to their doctor if they
are concerned about not getting enough
nutrients.

Astrology

34 www.fijitimescanada.com

Aries

You may expect an action-packed

week ahead. Travel, predominantly for
official work, may keep you shuttling
from pillar to post, leaving you very
little time to comply with your personal
responsibilities. But, rest assured that
this hectic phase will prove to be very
beneficial for you in your professional
life. Your reputation for being sincere,
dedicated and hard-working will spread
far and wide. However, while traveling
you will get a chance to meditate on
your present circumstances, and you
may even come up with some brilliant
decisions regarding your personal
life. This phase is favourable for
buying or selling property, so you may
initiate such a transaction without any
hesitation. Favourable time to buy/sell
will show you the right way forward.
On the health front, though, things may
be a bit delicate, so take good care of it.

Taurus

This may not exactly be a workoriented week, so your professional

life shall largely take a backseat. Even
in your personal life, it is not so much
your relationships which will take the
centre-stage, but your monetary affairs.
Though there will be no dearth of
money inflow, you may be wondering
as to where it is all going, which means
that you have either not budgeted your
expenses properly, or your budget has
gone off the rails. This requires serious
concentration, a thorough analysis of
your expenditure, and a firm resolve
not to spend on unnecessary objects
in future. It is true that you do want to
give a very materially comfortable life
to your near and dear ones, but it would
be foolish if you end up exceeding
your credit card limits. On the health
front, dont neglect taking the suggest
medications.

Gemini

You will be very restless this week on

the professional front, and will want to
get all the tasks allotted to you finished
well within the time-frames set for
them. You may even wish to take a
small break, if the time permits. The
stars are in favour for both creative as
well as technical professionals. The
best thing is that you will be very openminded, and shall not reject ideas, even
from juniors, out of hand, but will
seriously consider whether they can
be really put to practical and profitable
use. You should be in a mood to help
others, and will even be ready to spend
lavishly to keep them happy. This
week, you will be very straightforward
in your communication too. But, do
make sure that you dont use harsh
words, or you may end up alienating
even good friends.

Cancer

You will be brimming with zest and

enthusiasm this week. And, with
your vast reserves of energy, you will

be brilliant in the performance of

your tasks and projects, impressing
everyone around you, be it your peers
or superiors. You may expect rewards
for your labours, but not immediately,
as they will come in their own sweet
time. Join a gym or take up some
heavy exercises to burn up all the
excessive calories, or find some other
positive outlet. But dont let it all get
channelized in a negative way, as
you shall only be harming your own
interests. On the domestic front, things
appear to be flowing smoothly. You
will not only be able to resolve some
petty differences with your near and
dear ones, but shall also be able to
strengthen your relationships. Better
still, work on a particularly difficult
relationship with astrology based
relationship advice.

Leo

This week, you will work with great

competence. Even if your levels of
energy at times may be low, you will
manage to put your intelligence to the
best use. All the better, if you are in
a position of authority, as you will be
able to delegate work, and get it done
as per your guidelines in the best
interests of your company. You may
feel, and rightly so, that it is high time
you were given a raise or a promotion,
or both, and you may even request
your superiors for the same. You will
also be very balanced, while taking
decisions, which will turn out to be
very beneficial, both on the personal or
professional fronts. Since you believe
in team-work, you shall give due
importance to the views of others, and
will consider them too before taking
any important decisions. However, for
some reason if you feel that you are
unable to utilise your full potential,
you could choose to use the wisdom of
Astrology to your benefit.

Virgo

This week, you will need to focus on

your short-term targets, and avoid
getting involved in activities that may
take too long to be completed. Since it
is a favourable time to apply for another
job, do it, and you may just land a
much more lucrative and prestigious
job. Your personal affairs and financial
condition will demand a lot of
attention. Use your reservoir of energy
wisely, instead of wasting it away on
unproductive or negative activities.
Your communication skills will be
good. If you happen to be in a position
of authority, you will be compassionate
towards the weaknesses of your
subordinates. The stars indicate that on
the financial front, there may be some
gains, but they may not be sufficient to
cover all your projected expenses, so
keep a tight fist. If financial issues have
become bothersome, handle them with
care get astute, unbiased guidance
with a service like manner.

Friday June 27, 2014

Libra

Although you may be in a powerful

position in your company, you will not
throw your weight around, but shall
treat everyone with great dignity and
patience, which will win the hearts of
all your subordinates. And, they will, in
turn, put their heart and soul into their
work, which you know will eventually
benefit you and your company. Your
decision-making too will be spot-on.
You are also not one to rest on your
laurels, so you will make conscious
efforts to improve your skills, and
broaden the scope of your knowledge,
which is imperative in this age where
technology is changing at a break-neck
speed. On the financial front, this is
one of the better weeks in the recent
times, and you shall have enough
funds to take care of all the expected
expenses. However, you may still feel
something is amiss. Either you are too
tired or you need some nice, long chat
with a friend. Its best that you share
your woes with an Astrologer.

Scorpio

Although you love to stick to the

tried and tested ways both at work
and home, this week somehow the
monotony of your work could make
you feel very dull and lazy. You must
try to inject some spice into your life by
doing something new that you always
wanted to do but never had the time or
resources. Explore your surroundings,
and you will surely find something
fascinating to do. Change your attitude
towards work, and approach it in
different ways instead of taking the
same approach every time. Keep an
open mind and dont be prejudiced
towards anything or anyone. Be
receptive to any ideas or suggestions
that your colleagues may have. If you
dont change with changing times, you
are bound to get left behind. Students
will find studies to be a big burden, and
will greatly profit from opting for our
specially tailor-cut service.

Sagittarius

This appears to be an average week on

the professional front. There is nothing
much to look forward to, but then there
is nothing to be worried about either.
Businessmen, though, may be tensed
about decreasing volumes and profits,
but if you are thinking in terms of
forging a partnership to turn around
things, This week is not auspicious for
it. On the social front you shall be on
good terms with everyone around you,
and you will be genuinely interested in
their problems and helping them sort
them out. On the personal front, married
couples shall enjoy their relationship to
the hilt. Singles can now look forward
to propose to someone with whom you
wish to form a life-long bond. If you

are in a long-distance relationship,

the time is right to meet and take it to
the next level. And, if that gives you
goosebumps it would be best to get
assured first.

Capricorn

If you are a professional, this week

you shall be so overloaded with work
that you may have to be on your toes
continuously. You will have no time
to even think; you may have to just
keep completing one task after another
with no breathing space in between.
The quality of your work is, therefore,
bound to suffer, but there wont be
much to do about it, except being
extremely alert, trying to minimise the
mistakes. Also, it is very likely that you
shall have to seek the help of others to
accomplish your work, well within
your deadlines. If you happen to be a
businessman, you will have to keep
goading your staffers to complete their
work faster to meet the common goals,
or else you may not be able to cope up
with your rivals.

Aquarius

Your work life, regardless of whether

you are a businessman or a professional,
shall be smooth, and you shall manage
things with great efficiency. You will
show your generous side, helping your
friends who may be in need of it. The
stars suggest that your workload will
increase, but not so much as to cause
any worries. You are very likely to
expand your social circle by making
new friendships, connecting to new
people, and many of them shall be
able to inspire you to achieve greater
heights. You may feel inclined towards
spirituality, and may visit places of
worship, or take to meditation. Some
of you, though, may be in a defiant
mood, questioning the wisdom of each
and every thing, and may incur the
wrath of the powers that be.

Pisces

The excessive workload at office this

week will be offset by the peaceful
atmosphere at home. Your bosses may
have very high expectations from you,
which you will try to live up to, but it
will leave you fatigued. However, the
happy atmosphere at home, and just
a look at the innocent faces of your
children, will uplift your mood. You
shall therefore look forward to the
evenings with great eagerness, when
you can spend quality time with your
spouse, children as well as parents.
You will prefer to stay at home instead
of socialising, but you may not be
able to avoid some relatives who are
scheduled to pay you a visit. Take
special care of your aged parents, as
well as your own health. Try to make
it a habit to exercise regularly, or do
some meditation.

scribble down her thoughts on a piece
of paper before giving the award to her
beloved father.
Here is what the loving daughter had to
say about her doting dad:
Shatrughan Sinha to the world he
is a legendary actor, powerful orator,
the Shotgun thats ready to unleash a

honest person who has instilled values
in me that I will stand by for life. He is
the man who taught me never to back

Alok Nath To Play 'Babuji'

Again

After becoming the butt of jokes on

social networking platforms, veteran
actor Alok Nath is back to playing
'Babuji' - this time for a new family
comedy series, "Tu Mere Agal Bagal
Hai". He is gung-ho about the unique
project, where the actors will get a
chance to perform in front of a live
audience.
"I'm truly excited to be a part of 'Tu
Mere Agal Bagal Hai'. This will be my
first try with a comedy TV series on the
small screen. The beauty of the show
is that it is filmed in front of a live
audience and has an amazing star cast,"
Bollywood's beloved 'Babuji' said in a
statement.
"The satisfaction that one gets from
entertaining live audiences has a
different feel. We all know humour
is evolving and I am positive that the
audiences will love our show," added
the actor, who has essayed a father's
role in umpteen films.
Produced by FRAMES and directed
by Rajan Waghdhare, the show will hit
SAB TV July 7.

An innovative family comedy show,

about the lives of the owners and the
tenants living under the same roof of
Bungalow No. 5, "Tu Mere..." shall
explore the funny side of the incidents
that happen in the daily lives of all the
characters. The USP is the presence of
live audience on the sets.
Anooj Kapoor, senior executive vice
president and business head, SAB
TV, said: "The show is a multi-level
domestic fictional comedy in a standup format. It will showcase the set-up
of a bungalow and its tenants with live
audience; it would be interesting to see
how this innovative concept appeals to
Indian audiences."
The show has an ensemble cast
including Rajesh Kumar, Shweta
Gulati, Apara Mehta, Ami Trivedi,
Samir Shah, Sugandha Mishra, Dhaval,
Manoj Goyal, Abhishek Awasthi,
Monica Castelino and Sukesh.
With such a cast and concept, "Tu
Mere..." promises to be a fresh alaugh
every minute' comedy, says Ranjeet
Thakur of FRAMES.

The veteran actor is back doing what

she does the best comedy on SAB TV
Supriya Pathak is playing the role
of mausi (aunt), who will be on Tu
Mere Agal Bagal Hai only as a guest
character. The actor will make special
appearances from time to time. When
queried about her role she said, I
havent begun shooting yet. So I do not
know much about my character yet.
I have been lucky to get different
kinds of roles. Its great to be doing
comedy again, added Supriya.

The actor who was last seen in Ram

Leela also talks about her role in Bobby
Jasoos. Supriya plays Vidya Balans
mother in the movie. I am playing a
very warm mother in Bobby Jasoos. It
will take away the image I portrayed
in Ram Leela. I am playing a typical
middle class mother, which will be an
interesting and surprising character.
Well looks like theres a lot of surprising
elements in Supriya Pathaks upcoming
TV show and movies. We are eagerly
waiting to see her do some comedy.

Will Sunny Leone Create Baby

Doll Magic Again In Pink Lips
Song From Hate Story 2

The Ragini MMS 2 babe has been in

the news for her highly anticipated
item number Pink Lips. Will she live
up to our expectations?
After the smash hit Baby Doll, the
Meet Bros Anjjan have come up with
a brand new number Pink Lips for
the very sexy Sunny Leone. This item
number will showcase the gorgeous
MTV Splitsvilla 7 host in yet another
hot avatar. Will the sexy siren who
took the nation by storm with her hot
stint in Baby Doll from Ragini MMS
2, manage to create the same magic yet
again.
In keeping with the tone of the song,
we imagine Sunny Leone in a hot
and hatke avatar this time. Where in
Baby doll, the lass was seen wearing

shimmering gold and black outfits,

in Pink Lips we expect to see her
playing with more colours, pink to be
obviously specific. Since the song is
named Pink Lips, we would love to
see Sunny show off her pretty pink lips
instead of red for a change. And yes the
hotter Sunnys appearance is the more
fireworks well get to see. Remember,
how the films heroine Surveen Chawla
got all insecure on hearing of Ms
Leones item song?
Lastly, it would be refreshing to see
the diva do a few hard-hitting dance
sequences instead of the typical latkas
and jhatkas. Well looks like Ms Sunny
has a lot to live up to so lets not burden
her. Here is the song Pink Lips from
Hate Story 2 for all of you. Enjoy!

Jersey Boys**** (PG)

Sweet Music!
By Robert Waldman

Settle In for a musical storm with the

release of Jersey Boys. Taken from the
Hit Broadway musical that took Las
Vegas by storm before delighting
audiences at Vancouver's famed Queen
Elizabeth Theatre this Warner brothers
release sure does justice to the live
production. See and hear this celluloid
triumph at Cineplex Odeon
Theatres around B.C.
Actor turned director producer Clint
Eastwood hits all the right notes with
this 2 hours and 15 minute production
. Music is everywhere as we learn the
history of Frankie Valli and The Four
seasons. Expert casting and singing
traces the development of the famed
50s group that would become a cultural
phenomenon in the 1960s.
Casting means everything to this
genre of film as comparisons to the

Broadway hit will inevitably be made.

Lucky producers sought and found the
right Frankie by way of John Lloyd
Young. All the right high notes are
pitch perfect as is the friction between
Frankie and Tommy DeVito, the man
who "discovered" the virgin who
would become a man. Feel the heat and
friction as Vincent Piazza shines as the
hot-tempered cash starved man.
Dozens of Frankie Valli songs are
impeccably performed and the
atmosphere recreated is brilliant. Huge
personal problems plague members
of the group as the rise to national
success is prone with setbacks. Rough,
gritty and full of life Jersey Boys is a
first class musical enhanced with the
presence of Christopher Walken (A
View To A Kill) as a mobster with a
heart of gold.

Jennifer Lopez Spotted With Dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy At

Nightclub Again
Jennifer Lopez, who recently slammed
dating rumors was recently spotted dancing
together with Maksim Chmerkovskiy at
Shrine Nightclub at Foxwoods Resort
Casino in Connecticut, it has been revealed.
An onlooker said that Chmerkovskiy
was whispering into Lopez's ear and
hugged her and the two got down to
tunes including Jay Z's "99 Problems"
and Rihanna's "Birthday Cake."

The eyewitness added that the duo

looked very flirty with each other and
the 44-year-old singer had a huge smile
on her face and looked like she was
having a great time.
The sources told the publication that
the pair was "just friends".
Lopez recently announced her split
from dancer boyfriend Casper Smart
two weeks ago.

Actress Lindsay Lohan reportedly

recently ran around department store
Selfridges without clothes.
The "Mean Girls" star is said to
have shocked onlookers at the plush
department store when she allegedly
charged out of her dressing room
and started racing around the shop in
the buff, laughing hysterically all the
while.
"Lindsay took some items into the
changing room. Halfway through, she
ran out of the room with nothing on and
was chased by members of staff who
were trying to cover her up," a source
was quoted by The Sun newspaper as
saying.
"She was laughing her head off and
literally giving staff the run-around
as customers looked on," added the
source.
The 27-year-old was due to meet with

a personal shopper at Selfridges later

that day, but subsequently cancelled
her appointment following her bizarre
display.

For Women/ Relationship

Friday June 27, 2014

Things A Woman Should Know

We list 10 things every woman should
know
1. Calling you does not mean we are
hitting on you
Most men are left wondering that why's
it that just because he called you: you
assumed he wants you to fill in the post
of his girlfriend. He may actually just
want to hang out with you.
2. You are much prettier without all
that makeup
Your basic foundation and kajal is fine,
but layers upon layers of makeup only
makes you unappealing to your guy. So
keep it simple.
3. When you act giggly, it's seriously
embarrassing
When you spot your gang of girls while
you are out with your boyfriend, don't
squeal and go giggly or jump up and down.
Most men find it extremely childish.
4. Gossiping, whispering and writing
notes makes you look shallow
When you pass notes or whisper when
you and your friends are sitting at a
table along with others makes it seem
like you are still in your classroom.
5. Boys worry about what you think
of their hair, skin, weight and clothes
Do tell your boyfriend if you think his
new haircut makes him look cute or if
his favourite T-shirt needs to be done
away with.

6. PMS is no excuse to be mean

Yes, men do understand that every
month you are likely to get crabby for a
few days, but that's not reason enough
to be mean and cranky all the time.
7. Talking about your butt is boring
It's a known fact that no boyfriend
who doesn't want to be dumped
will ever tell his girlfriend that she is
looking fat. So no in point discussing,
arguing and then discussing some
more, about weight issues with your
boyfriend.
8. Tight clothes make you look sort
of desperate and insecure
You may be in shape but anything
that amounts to too much skin show
is not going to be appreciated by your
boyfriend. Don't keep showing how
desperate you are. It can be a big put
off if the guy is serious about you.
9. Most boys are looking for the right
girl
It's not just women who are looking
for Mr Right, but boys are looking out
for their Miss Perfect too. So don't be
scared to play the love game.
10. If you like him, just tell him
Don't pretend to ignore him and then
cry when he asks another girl out for
dinner. If he's interested in you and if
you feel the same way then respond.
Don't keep the guy waiting too long.

Curing Smudged Nail Polish

Hardly anyone has the time for a leisurely manicure and much less the
patience to let your nail polish dry in its own sweet time. Here's a quick fix to
put you out of your misery:

Relationships

Things You Must Tell Your

Partner

Below are some important things you

just have to tell your partner.
A relationship is based on conversation
between the two people involved, more
than anything else. At times, there's
no way around but to be vocal about
certain things, when with your partner.
While it may be hurtful or unpleasant
at the moment, more than often, it does
good in the long haul. Here are some
things you must let your partner know,
to be in a healthy relationship.
My expectations
Where's this relationship heading at?
You prefer the FWB (friends with
benefits) bit, or is this something much
more than the regular attraction, or are
you sure about a future with this man?
These are things he needs to know,
because well, you've got to be sure
how he feels about it too, right?
Love? Not you
You've been with this man for four
years, but in between met another
'Mr Right'. Let him know about this.
It is important, and don't just ignore
the conversation because you think
it'll break his heart. If so, you will be
extremely unfair not only to yourself,
but also to the two other men involved.
I spent that much...
A little spending here and there can
be information avoided. But if you've
had a major dent in your wallet like

never before, or bought something

unimaginably extravagant, be it
jewellery, property or something else
under the sun, its best you let your
man know. Such matters do make a
difference at times.
I'm upset
His aunt taunted you on the way you
dress, or his brother's girlfriend has
made it clear that she thinks you're
annoying; anything to do with his
family or friends that makes you
uncomfortable, discuss with him. Tell
him what you feel about it and also ask
him if there's anything you can do to
save the situation.
Likes, dislikes and more
Things that end up being a bone of
contention, in the long run, such as
likes, dislikes, preferences in terms of
food and other activities, also serious
past relationships, must not be kept a
secret from your partner. You don't
want to run into troubled waters later
in life, would you?
I need space
Sometimes you just need your lone
time and then there's no two ways
about it. But make sure when you do
need that space of your own, you tell
your guy the same, so you can avoid
any conflicts at the moment. You know,
he wouldn't know what you feel at the
moment unless you tell him.

Compliments Your Man Wants To

Hear
Here's a list of things you can say to your man, to let him know that you
appreciate him and that he's special

So you applied your nail polish but

can't sit still while it's drying? There's
nothing more horrible and shabby
looking than smudged nail polish.
You might as well go bare rather than
sporting polish that's smudged and
ruined. If you thought removing the
nail paint and applying all the coats all
over again is the only way to remedy
the situation, read on.

Here's an awesome tip that not only

saves time but is also hassle-free. Dip a
cotton bud in nail polish remover. Roll
the cotton bud over the smudged parts
while gently sanding it down. You
can also use your fingertip instead of
a cotton bud. Dip your finger in some
nail polish remover and smooth over
the messed up bits. Apply a fresh coat
of paint when your nail dries up. Ta-da!

Like the ones from the opposite sex,

women are accustomed to receiving
compliments - from the random
guy at the pub to the street whistler!
On the other hand, men rarely get a
compliment. So fire off a meaningful
compliment to your man and make
way for a steaming night ahead.
Boy, you can work it!
Tell your man how awesome he is in
the bedroom - this one definitely ranks
at the top of his list! A guy dies to hear
how good he is at the skills he works so
hard to perfect.
What would I do without you?
Guys love to feel needed. Whether it is
to help you understand bank work or
simply open a jam jar it is one of
the greatest feelings for a man that you
can't live without them. Cuddle him and
tell him it would have been impossible
for you to do anything without him.
Crave to spend more time with you
Sometimes you need to connect with

his inner being as well. No matter how

much you compliment on his looks or
his skills - your efforts will go waste if
you don't let him know how much you
love him and want to be with him. Tell
him that it is his innate characteristics
that draw you closer to him.
You are excellent at your job!
Praising your guy's brain power is a
must! Every guy wants to know that
he is awesome at his task. Go that
extra mile and tell him how much you
admire him for the way he shows his
dedication and loyalty towards his
work. This one will touch him....really!
You're so freaking hot!
This is one compliment that
will instantly lift his spirits.
Complimenting a guy on his good
looks is okay, but it is a different
thing altogether to tell him what
makes him so desirable - serve up his
accolade, gently touch his body parts
to add an extra sizzle to it.

Food Combos To Make You Lean

Combination: Eggs and Mango

Gives you: Firm skin

There's no need to apply several
products to get good, firm skin. Just
eat some eggs and mango, especially
now that the fruit is in season. Eggs
are naturally rich in amino acids that
are essential for formation of skinplumping collagen. And mango, which
is rich in Vitamin C, works with these
acids to boost collagen production.
This helps build back lost stores in the
body, which can significantly improve
the appearance of skin.
Do it right: To give a boost to your
next breakfast, pair an omelet with
a cup of fresh mango chunks, which
supply nearly an entire day's supply of
Vitamin C.
Combination: Red Bell Peppers and
Black Beans
Gives you: Better Immunity
They look good at the veggie market
and are expensive. But here's a good
reason to buy them. You'll absorb more
immune-boosting plant iron by adding
in some red bell peppers on your plate.
Iron in black beans is hard for the body
to absorb, however, adding a dose
of Vitamin C-rich produce like red
peppers converts the iron into a type
that's easier for the body to use.
Do it right: There are great recipes
online that show you how to mix your
beans with red bell peppers and make
the meal a tasty one too.
Combination: Extra-Virgin Olive

Oil and Tomatoes

Gives you: Better protection from
diseases
Tomatoes boast of four major
carotenoids (alpha-carotene, betacarotene, lutein, and lycopene) besides
three potent antioxidants (betacarotene,
Vitamin E, and Vitamin C) which
may help fight cancer and heart
disease. These protective chemicals
are better absorbed with extra-virgin
olive oil, which is high in healthy
monounsaturated fats.
Do it right: Leave the tomato skin on,
since it is packed with phytochemicals.
Extra-virgin olive oil is the least
processed form, so it contains the most
beneficial compounds. Store it away
from heat and light to prevent it from
going rancid.
Combination: Broccoli and Tomatoes
Gives you: Protection against cancer
Both are individually known to
have cancer-fighting properties, but
research has shown that together they
are the Hulk of cancer-fighting foods.
Scientists found consuming tomato
and broccoli at the same time was
more effective at slowing the growth of

important
phytochemicals called avenanthramides

to work with Vitamin C to reduce
harmful effects of bad cholesterol and
help prevent plaque build-up that lead
to heart attacks.
Do it right: Enjoy a half cup of sliced
strawberries with your morning bowl
of oatmeal.
Combination: Green Tea and Lemon
Gives you: A healthier heart
Green tea, a rich source of powerful
antioxidants called catechins, is known
to help improve the heart's health.
However, according to studies only
about 20 per cent of these compounds
are absorbed by the human body.
Adding lemon juice to green tea has
been shown to increase the catechins
level to 80 per cent.
Do it right: After brewing yourself a

weight loss
Sprinkling cinnamon on your toast
may help keep your blood sugar at a
healthier level, which prevents dips in
your energy and spikes in your hunger
level. In a study published in the
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,

cinnamon was found to slow the rate

of stomach emptying after meals and
reduce the rise in blood sugar after
meals to negate more bingeing later.
Do it right: Use whole grain bread,
trans-free margarine and a teaspoon of
cinnamon.

Both these veggies contain a number
of organosulfur compounds and hearthealthy plant chemicals that help keep
arteries free of plaque. Some of these
compounds have even been studied for
their power to detoxify carcinogens in
the body.
Do it right: Most Indian cooking combines
the two, however if you are in the mood
for something else, the combination even
works for soups and sauces.
Combination: Green Tea and Black
Pepper
Gives you: A slimmer waistline
Forget crash dieting. After your next
meal sip a cup of green tea with a
little black pepper thrown in. The
combination boosts the absorption of
EGCG, a key antioxidant in tea tied
to calorie burning, by 130 per cent.
Experts say the compounds in green tea
can affect the hormones that regulate
hunger and fullness.
Do it right: Studies say as little as
a half-teaspoon of black pepper
can increase the absorption of tea's
beneficial compounds.

Health Benefits Of Cucumbers

Cucumbers are the fourth most
cultivated vegetable in the world and
known to be one of the best foods
for your body's overall health, often
referred to as a superfood. Cucumbers
are often sprayed with pesticides so
it is important to buy organic or even
better, grow them yourself.
Here are 10 Benefits of cucumbers:
1.Quick pick me-up - Cucumbers
are a good source of B vitamins. Put
down your sodas and coffee and eat a
cucumber slice.
2. Rehydrates body and replenishes
daily vitamins - Cucumbers are 95
percent water, keeping the body
hydrated while helping the body
eliminate toxins. Cucumbers have
most of the vitamins the body needs
in a single day. Don't forget to leave
the skin on because the skin contains
a good amount of vitamin C, about
10 percent of the daily-recommended
allowance.
3. Skin and hair care - If you don't like

to eat the skin, it can be used for skin

irritations and sunburns as aloe would
be used. Place a slice over puffy eyes
and its anti-inflammatory properties
help reduce puffiness. The silicon and
sulfur in cucumbers help to stimulate
hair growth.
4. Fight cancers - Cucumber are known
to contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol,
and secoisolariciresinol. These three
lignans have a strong history of
research in connection with reduced
risk of several cancer types, including
breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine
cancer and prostate cancer.
5. Home care - Eliminates a foggy
mirror. Before taking a shower, rub
a cucumber slice along a mirror
and it will eliminate the mirror
fogging up. Instead of WD40, take
a cucumber slice and rub it along
a squeaky hinge and your door will
stop squeaking.
6. Relieves bad breath - Take a slice
of cucumber and press it to the roof of

your mouth with your tongue for 30

seconds, the phytochemcials will kill
the bacteria in your mouth responsible
for causing bad breath.
7. Hangover cure - To avoid a morning
hangover or headache; eat a few
cucumber slices before going to bed.
Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B
vitamins and electrolytes to replenish
many essential nutrients, reducing
the intensity of both hangover and
headache.
8. Aids in weight loss and digestion Due to its low calorie and high water
content, cucumber is an ideal diet for
people who are looking for weight loss.
The high water content and dietary
fiber in cucumbers are very effective
in ridding the body of toxins from the
digestive system, aiding digestion.
Daily consumption of cucumbers can
be regarded as a remedy for chronic
constipation.
9. Cures diabetes, reduces cholesterol
and controls blood pressure -

Cucumber juice contains a hormone

which is needed by the cells of the
pancreas for producing insulin which
has been found to be beneficial to
diabetic patients. Researchers found
that a compound called sterols
in cucumbers may help reduce
cholesterol levels. Cucumbers contain
a lot of potassium, magnesium and
fiber. These work effectively for
regulating blood pressure. This makes
cucumbers good for treating both
low blood pressure and high blood
pressure.
10. Promotes joint health, relieves
gout and arthritis pain -Cucumber is
an excellent source of silica, which is
known to help promotes joint health by
strengthening the connective tissues.
They are also rich in vitamin A, B1, B6,
C & D, Folate, Calcium, Magnesium,
and Potassium. When mixed with
carrot juice, they can relieve gout and
arthritis pain by lowering the uric acid
levels

Uruguay's Luis Suarez Suspended Sports Commission fund football

9 Games
Coach

Uruguay's Luis Suarez holds his teeth after biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini's
shoulder during Tuesday's World Cup match between Italy and Uruguay in
Brazil. FIFA has banned Suarez for 9 games and 4 months over the incident.
Two days after the sporting world
reacted in shock to what appeared to be
a case of one elite soccer player biting
another, FIFA, the sport's governing
body, announced that it's suspending
Uruguayan star Luis Suarez for nine
matches and fining him 100,000 Swiss
francs (about $112,000).
The suspension comes two days before
Uruguay faces Colombia in the round of
16 on Saturday. It begins immediately,
FIFA says. Suarez is also banned from
any soccer activity for four months.
The punishment stems from Tuesday,
when Suarez lunged at Italian defender
Giorgio Chiellini's shoulder. Both
of them fell to the ground in pain

afterwards, and Chiellini pulled the

top of his jersey down to show referees
what looked to be teeth marks. The
play didn't bring a penalty.
FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings
Wednesday, promising a quick
resolution to the matter.
"Such behavior cannot be tolerated on
any football pitch, and in particular not
at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of
millions of people are on the stars on the
field," said Claudio Sulser, chairman of
the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
As we reported, more than 100
gamblers won money as a result of
Suarez's actions, having bet that he
would bite someone at the World Cup.

Vancouver (5-2-7) pushed its unbeaten

remained winless on the road.
Vancouver striker Darren Mattocks

Whitecaps defender Carlyle Mitchell

Montreal striker Jack McInerney's

The Fiji National Sports Commission

has taken responsibility of funding the
salary and other benefits for football
national coach Juan Carlos Buzzetti.
Chairman Peter Maizey announced
this during a press conference held at
the Fiji National Sports Commission
office in Suva.
Maizey confirmed that the commission
will fund Buzzettis salary for the next
three years.
For the next three years we will be
assisting Fiji FA with the national
coach salary and contract. This is the
whole package which includes salary,
accommodation and various other
things which is part of international
coachs package, Maizey said.
We have seen results on what happens
when you put money into a young U20
team. They can go out to world and
prove that Fiji is not the second cousin
but we can qualify for a world cup event.

The prime minister challenged Fiji FA to

get their acts together to see qualify for
a World Cup event in future and we are
pleased that Fiji FA took that on board
and have done that in a year, he said.
The actual sum of the deal was not
disclosed but Maizey has hinted it to
be around $150-$200,000 per year.
Bob Kumar, the Fiji FA chief executive
officer thanked the Fiji government and
Sports Commission for the assistance.
On behalf of the Fiji FA board
and affiliates we are grateful to the
government of the days and the Fiji
National Sports Commission as this
assistance is a boost for football,
Kumar said.
The funds for the national coach which
Fiji FA has been accommodating can
now be diverted into other areas such
as youth and womens development.
Fiji FA has appointed Buzzetti on a
four-year contract.

Doug Lidster May Follow Willie Desjardins Path To

Canucks
Longtime Vancouver Blue-Liner Worked Alongside Teams New Coach In AHL, WHL

Doug Lidster was born in Kamloops,

was drafted by the Canucks and played
nine of his 15 National Hockey League
seasons with Vancouver.
He hopes he can return home to once
again become a Canuck, this time as a
coach.
Lidster confirmed Wednesday he has
talked with new Canucks head coach
Willie Desjardins about joining his
staff and continuing what he thinks has
been a strong coaching partnership.
Well, I am certainly interested in
talking about it, Lidster said over
the phone from Michigan, where he
is visiting family. I enjoy working
with Willie. Hes a great coach. I love
Vancouver and I like the organization.
There are all kinds of good reasons to
come.
Lidster, 53, spent the past two seasons
working as Desjardins lone assistant
with the American Hockey Leagues
Texas Stars, who last week won the
Calder Cup.
I really like it in Texas, too, said the
former defenceman, who played 666 of
his 897 NHL games with the Canucks.
We have a good spot there and I have
really enjoyed it. But when I started
coaching, I said you never know where
it is going to take you, so you have to
be willing to uproot and move, so well
check it out.
The Canucks have received permission
from the Dallas Stars to talk to Lidster,
who expects to chat soon with either
general manager Jim Benning or
president of hockey operations Trevor
Linden.
When he was introduced as the
Canucks 18th head coach on Monday,
Desjardins sounded like he wanted

Lidster on his staff.

Doug is a great guy and has been with
me through a lot, so I really respect
him, Desjardins said.
Lidster said he and Desjardins spoke
Tuesday night.
I know he has had a busy time and
we talked and he passed on his phone
number and said Id receive a phone
call from them in the next couple of
days, Lidster said. So thats where
were at.

I am expecting a call from Trevor or

Jim. I know they are really busy with
the draft and everything, so I would
think that would probably be the next
phone call. Willie and I talk on a
regular basis.
Lidster could also get an offer to remain
in Austin and succeed Desjardins as
head coach of the Texas Stars. But
Lidster clearly would jump at the
chance to join the Canucks.
It would be a tough decision, but Id
like to try the NHL, he said. We really
enjoyed our time in Austin. I like the
group that we have. I like (Dallas GM)
Jim Nill and everything that is going

on in Dallas. We seem to have a really

good thing going on there. Austin is a
great spot, it really is. We dont have the
fan base they have in Vancouver, but the
fans they have are really passionate. Its
a great spot to live, theres all kinds of
pluses in Austin.
Lidster has worked under Desjardins
on two occasions. He also spent one
year as Desjardins assistant with the
WHLs Medicine Hat Tigers in 200203. He thinks the two of them work
well together.
No. 1, we trust each other, Lidster
said. We dont always see everything
through the same set of glasses, but we
talk about things and work things out.
Hes very open and I sure appreciate
that. When push comes to shove, I just
back him. He makes the final decision,
its his decision and we go from there
We have been able to work that way
on two different occasions and seem to
enjoy each other.
With him or without him, Lidster has
no doubt that Desjardins will succeed
with the Canucks.
Well, hes a man with great integrity,
Lidster said of Desjardins. When he
says something, thats what he means.
Players appreciate that. At the end of
the day, everybody wants the same
thing. You want to play for a good
organization and you want to win.
Hes exceptional at pulling everyone
together and getting people all going in
one direction.
That is really what he does very well.
He asks for input. He includes the
players he involves them because
he knows how important they are. Its
all about the players. He is like the
conductor of a symphony orchestra:
they can all play and he just gives them
the right parts, asks for their input and
its what song are we going to play, and
away we go.
